Urvashi
Artist: Ravi Parma Press
Date: 1890
Collection: Raja Ravi Heritage Foundation, Bengaluru, India
Description
Another love story bordering on a tragic, abrupt end. The beautiful celestial apsara Urvashi is sent down from the heavens and king Puruvanas falls in love with her. She Agrees to his proposal of marriage on the condition that he never neglects her pet goats and secondly, he will never present himself naked before her. Urvashi tells him that if he disobeys the two conditions at any time, she would go away.
Puruvanas remains rooted in love and stays true, causing dismay to the Devas, who want Urvashi back in their abode. Some of them come down stealthily at night and steal the goats; hearing the animals' cry Urvashi chides Puruvanas for letting go unattended. Rushing out to rescue them, the king is caught unaware as a flash of lighting reveals his naked self. With the second condition also broken, albeit unwittingly, Urvashi flies away to the heavens even as a dispirited Peruvanas desesperately tries to stop her departure.

MWW Artwork of the Day (4/20/24) Late Medieval India (Vijayanagara Empire, 1336-1646) Gopuram, Minakshi Temple (1623-55) Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India
A gopuram is usually rectangular in form with ground-level wooden doors, often richly decorated, providing access. Above is the tapering gopuram, divided into many stories which diminish in size as the gopuram tower narrows. Usually the tower is topped with a barrel vaulted roof with a finial. Gopurams are exquisitely decorated with sculpture and carvings and painted with a variety of themes derived from the Hindu mythology, particularly those associated with the presiding deity of the temple where the gopuram is located.

Group Portrait of Sir Elijah and Lady Impey
Artist: Johann Zoffany (German, 1733-1810)
Date: ca. 1783-1784
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid, Spain
Description
The present portrait depicts Sir Elijah and Lady Impey and their three children. The canvas must have been painted shortly after Zoffany’s arrival in India on 15 September 1783 as the Impey family returned to Britain in December of that year.
Sir Elijah Impey was born on 13 June 1732 at Butterwick House. On 18 January 1768 he married Mary, son of Sir John Reade. Impey was appointed Chief Justice to the Supreme Court in Calcutta, an institution founded in 1773 and which he joined in 1775. It would seem that professional jealousy led him to exceed his functions and he also executed the function of President of the Central Court without the necessary permission from London. His conduct was reported and he was obliged to return to Britain to give an account of his actions.

The Martand Sun Temple, Kashmir
Dedicated to Lord Surya, Hinduism's principal sun god; Surya Dev is also recognized through his Sanskrit name Martand.
It was made by King Lalitaditya in around 5th Century A.D. and it was destructed by Muslim ruler Sikander Butshikan, under the advice of Sufi preacher Mir Muhammad Hamadani. It is believed that the was so strongly built that it took many days for its destruction.

The temple has a colonnaded courtyard, with its primary shrine in its center and surrounded by 84 smaller shrines, stretching to be 220 feet long and 142 feet broad total and incorporating a smaller temple that was previously built.
The primary shrine is located in a centralised structure (the temple proper) that is thought to have had a pyramidal top - a common feature of the temples in Kashmir. Various wall carvings in the antechamber of the temple proper depict other gods, such as Vishnu Ji and river goddesses, such as Mata Ganga and Mata Yamuna, in addition to the sun-god Surya Dev.

Temple of the Sun - Gujarat - India
Woven into the rich tapestry of Indian heritage, the ancient Sun Temple in Gujarat (Modhera), is a Hindu temple that is older than the Konark Sun Temple in Orissa and stands as a testament to astronomical science and artistic mastery. Dedicated to the solar deity Surya, the temple functions as an ancient observatory, strategically capturing the Sun's rays twice a year during the solar equinoxes and, on the summer solstice day, embodying cosmic knowledge and wisdom. As per the Vedas, India's ancient sacred texts, the sun is seen as the soul of the universe and the source of energy sustaining all life on Earth.
Constructed during the rule of Bhima I of the Chaulukya dynasty, it was built between 1026-27 CE on the banks of the river Pushpavati. The 1000-year-old temple encapsulates ancient India's harmonious coexistence of intricate sculptures, exquisite artisanship, astronomical science, celestial alignment, and deep-rooted spirituality.
