thinking about todd and his resolve toward… not quite isolation, but being alone in a room full of people again. he goes along to the study room to sit on his own and do his homework, he sits at the poets table and follows along with what’s being said while keeping quiet, he goes to the meetings at all but doesn’t necessarily contribute (in fact, if you watch him when cameron is telling the story ‘from camp in sixth grade’, you can see that he recognizes it before any of the other poets but doesn’t voice it until they all have). he’s not alone, necessarily, if you want to get technical about it, he’s just lonely, and he’s generally okay with that. he doesn’t have friends and that’s fine, he doesn’t participate in class and that’s fine, he doesn’t have a relationship with his family and that’s fine—he could live without any real connection and he’d have been, more or less, fine.

the thing about when he says “i can take care of myself just fine!” is that he isn’t really wrong, you can infer that he’s been doing it his entire life anyway, it’s that ‘taking care of yourself’ isn’t the same thing as really living or being happy. todd’s an introvert, certainly, and even as he gets closer to the group he defaults to sitting quietly in the background, but he’s also denying himself community out of fear not introversion. todd isn’t friendless because he’s an introvert, although that definitely plays a part, he’s friendless because he pushes anyone that might want his company away. if anyone has every wanted for his attention in the first place. (neil’s unwavering interest in him is unique (even when it comes to the rest of the poets, who are fine with todd coming along and joining the group, but aren’t really hellbent on him being there in the beginning) and his refusal to accept it is a direct result of being so lonely growing up.)

there’s obviously something to be said about the implications of his parents neglect, and the more than likely fact that he grew up friendless, and how those both play a part in in him being so skilled at dodging social interaction/being so avoidant of it, but by the time we see him in the movie he’s all but accepted his fate as being alone his entire life. he’s already accepted being the family disappointment, and he’s already accepted he’ll never amount to anything, and he obviously doesn’t like it, but he’d have managed living with that knowledge without the confirmation that it was all wrong. would he have been miserable? almost certainly. but he’d have managed. he’d done it for that long already, anyhow.

actually if i can speak fondly about scientology for a moment. i really liked the "how to use a dictionary" course we took. like fundamentally a huge reason i was such a big reader as a kid is because of that course, and learning from a young age that the basic principles to learning a new word are:

1. look up the word and find its derivation so you know where it came from.

2. find the definition of the word that fits your context.

3. define the word in your own terms so its definition is solid in your mind.

4. make up sentences using the word until it feels comfortable for you.

5. repeat all previous steps with the other definitions of the word.

was all like. kind of vital to me discovering how cool books are, and how impactful language can be. scientology k-2 not that bad. unfortunate that quite literally every other aspect of it was incredibly damaging.

I also finally watched a chorus line for the first time, it’s good. I get why it’s A Classic. I like how no intermission makes it as hostile to the audience as the process is for the dancers (except a little less so because it’s crazy grueling for them). Also, very impressed by the song made up of many little segments that essentially goes on for 20 minutes at minimum. Since it’s A Classic from the 70s I wasn’t expecting it to be so experimental but it was quite avant-garde, very meta on multiple levels. I also didn’t know anything about the context of ‘the music and the mirror’ except the character singing it knows the director and is trying to get a job, so I assumed it was something like her trying to get an edge over everyone else by appealing to him and their shared history, but it was the complete opposite—not ‘please please pleeeaaase you know I can do this 🥺’ but ‘shut up about me being better than this I want to be in the fucking chorus line!!!’ and her shutting the director down when he tries to tell her She’s Somebody was really good. everyone in the chorus line is somebody you prick!!!!! also worst job interview ever dude why did you make paul tell you all of that shit. also was caught very off guard by looks 4 dance 10, respect for pulling the rug out from under us like that

What I just can not get over is that people are still hating on Luke and dismissing his relationship with Antonia ever since it went public in June 2024!! She is clearly someone who means something to Luke, and who he wants in his life. The hatred is a unhinged atp.

Yep. When it comes to his haters (non-Lukolas, or at least they claim not to be shippers), I just can't understand why they are so driven to shit on him every chance they get. And you can't convince them otherwise, at that. Empathy seems to be a lost art, and they would rather assume he's the worst person ever and the cast lied (or was paid to be nice about him) when they said nice things.

No arguments coming from fellow ADHD fans, logical explanations or just literally non-assuming versions of events get through. I don't get it. You don't have to like him, but why occupy your time with talking badly about him? Is that a healthy response? I sure don't think so.

And with Antonia, is like it's obvious they're together. In whatever way, because we don't know if they're exclusively together, since when, etc. But the point stands - she's his girlfriend at this current moment. No amount of delusion and denial will change that. You also don't have to like her (personally, I literally don't care and pay her no mind), but it's a fact.

And then people wonder why he's pulled back from the public eye. Imo it's a mix of: insane hatred from crazies, increased scrutiny, exhaustion after last year (yes, still bc if he's as introverted as I think, then it's still taking its toll on him), and the desire to live his life as he wants.

And no amount of cruelty will change that. So why bother? I don't think Nicola, their sweetheart, would be proud of how they treat him.

Magilumiere at Jump Festa time!

Koyama Rikiya as Shigemoto, now we're cooking.

Honestly I'm pretty satisfied with the casting for the rest of the key Magilumiere staff! Yamashita Daiki playing Nikoyama who looks uncannily like Deku is A+ no notes. Oosaka Ryouta I hadn't pictured as Midorikawa but I now that I think about it... that casting kind of rules.

Unfortunately only Fairouz, Hanamori and Koyama could be there in person but everyone seems pretty pumped.

Kana and Hitomi only had existing designs shown so I haven't shared them. No date for the anime was revealed beyond “Fall 2024."
