Equestrian Magazine Career: New custom Career for The Sims 4

Hey! I've been working on this project for a while now. Taking my initial idea from my Better Horses & Storytelling Mod, I wanted to add more to horse/equestrian gameplay. So I've been experimenting with S4S and the TDESC Builder to create a few mods to improve this part of the game/pack.

I started with a new skill that could work as a base for various careers (and not only use the riding skill, which in some cases just wouldn't make sense), and also it's base game compatible! Then I started working on this career, without using Mod Constructor because it's basically retired, so I had to start from scratch and experiment a lot.

But here it is! Your sims can now work for an Equestrian Magazine! I thought that it was an interesting concept and something I hadn't seen done in the sims, so I made it myself!

✨ To make it easier for you, the basic info you need to know: you have to download 3 packages, the XML Injector, a CORE file (only one) and the Career file; if you already have the injector, you should only download 2 packages to use this mod, I know the post is a bit long, but this is like the most important part, 3 packages in total! - Download links at the end.

How does the mod work?

This mod adds a new career for your sims to choose from, the Equestrian Magazine career. It has 5 initial levels and then the option to choose from two branches: Sports & Competition specialized Magazine, and Equestrian Fashion specialized Magazine.

To progress through the career, your sim must improve their writing, photography, equine knowledge and charisma skills (not all at the same time, don't worry).

Extra features

New social interactions for sims in the career:

Gossip about recent horse scandal (Min. Level 5)

Gossip about famous riders (Min. Level 5)

Recommend equine products (Min. Level 3)

You can find them in the Friendly > Gossip or Small Talk category.

Attend events:

Under the Equestrian App menu on the phone, there's a new option to cover equestrian events. You can choose to cover Competitions, Gala events, Facility tours, etc.

I wanted to add the option to write articles about these events, but the interaction doesn't work as it should and I couldn't find a solution yet. So I'll add the feature in a future update.

Parenthood and Get Famous Chance Cards:

If you own Get Famous, your sims might get the chance to leave their work and gain fame, just like in other careers (with 2 custom scenarios depending on the level).

If you own Parenthood, you will get the character values chance cards that are added to all careers with the pack.

However, custom chance cards related to the career will be added in the future!

Career boosts and better performance:

If your sim has any of these careers or traits, they will perform better:

Communications degree

Language and Literature degree

Horse Lover trait

For some reason, the career outfits are generated automatically, and I couldn't figure out how to make a custom uniform (I don't even think it's possible). So to change it there are a few ways:

Open the cheats console and type: sims.modify_career_outfit_in_cas (no mods)

With MCCC: click on your sim > sim commands > edit career outfit

Custom uniform by Midnitetech: this is the option I use because of how simple it makes it

Required CORE File

This mod requires a core file to work properly. It includes a pie menu for the phone and the custom Equine Knowledge skill.

Making these files separate means that I will be able to use them in other (Equestrian Expanded) mods without needing to download this career if you don't want it :) However, this package should only be downloaded once (unless it gets updated), and not every time you download a mod that needs it. (Download links at the requirements).

There are TWO VERSIONS, choose only ONE:

CORE_Softpines: if you're using @honeymoonsimmer's Softpine Icon Recolor

My editing skills aren't really good, so the basic phone icon doesn't look that good 🥲 I use the softpine icons recolor anyway, which is why I also made that version, to look more aesthetically pleasing 🫥 so feel free to use any version, but only one!

You can also recolor the icon to fit your aesthetic, do whatever you want with it! (For the softpines version, the creator allows recolors, but please make sure to check their page first).

Equine Knowledge Skill Info

For your sim to start gaining this skill, there's a new interaction under the Research Menu (computer): Research Horse Breeds. This will unlock the new skill, and more interactions will appear under the new Pie Menu (Equine Knowledge), plus new rabbithole activities will be unlocked as the sim progresses through the skill (Equestrian App on the phone).

Uronuki (うろぬき) - a real term meaning thinning out (of plants or seedlings), or euphemistically to refer to infanticide. Here, it refers to the mercury based pills that were used for abortion.

Unuki (うぬき or ウヌキ) - A name for a being on the mountain, Nisayama, derived from the previous term as a local euphemism

Nounuki (ノウヌキ) - A name seemingly derived from the previous term. If "Nou" is parsed to mean "Brain", this name can be interpreted as "Brainsnatcher" (this is the localized name used by the scans)

Ways I save money:

I have lived low income for a very long time and this is how I save money. Personal care: I leave my hair long and put it up if I want it out of the way, only cutting the ends maybe once a year or less. No dye, no "styles", no lotions/potions, no hot appliances. Simple and healthy. I never do mani/pedi unless I do it myself, but no polishes. I only use a one skin moisturizer. Also no make-up. I am 60 and people can't believe how young I look. Shoot if I look that young, why gob it up with expensive bottles and tubes of stuff nobody needs putting MY money into some company's pocket. I need my money. They don't.

Clothing: I only buy what I need and sometimes it is used or given to me as a gift. I wear it until it falls apart. I don't have many clothes. How many shirts can you wear at once? One, right? So how many clothes do you really need. I would say I maybe spend $100-200/yr on clothes, probably most socks and underwear. I have a coat I've been wearing for 40 years. Still looks great because it was a good coat. Laundry is only done when it is dirty. I did buy a small portable washer because the laundromat is a killer. This cost $350 and saves me $900/yr. I dry everything outside on a drying rack or inside on the same rack in the winter. My clothes don't wear out as quickly.

Housing: We rent and we rent less than maybe what we want and then make do. If they approve a mortgage for 200,000, buy a house for 150,000. If you can afford 1000 for rent, only spend 750. You get my drift. Always live under what you can afford because all the maintenance, insurance, taxes, and upkeep will also be less. This way you can save. I seriously have very few cleaning products. A bit of all purpose cleaner (I honestly just dilute ammonia with water) goes a long way. Nobody needs all the potions people create. I have simply used hot water on the floors. How sterile does a floor have to be? You're going to walk on it immediately and it will be dirty again, so really, who cares. I have the same old furniture I have had for years. Decent quality, well taken care of, and its lasted decades. Some of it was my grandmother's or mother's. It still works.

Food: LEARN TO COOK FROM SCRATCH. EAT LESS (I can guarantee most people eat way too much of all the wrong things). FINISH IT ALL AND USE THE LEFTOVERS. I buy stuff on clearance, even fruits and veg and quickly process them, stew them, blanch and freeze them, or whatever is appropriate. I have gotten a whole box of fruit and veg for $5 and not one bit of it is wasted in this way. Beans and pulses are good protein. Learn to cook them. Never buy processed, pre-cooked, out of the box foods. You are paying for someone else to do the work. Make a big batch of something and eat it all week, or freeze the remainder and make something different mid-week. LEARN TO COOK. LEARN TO COOK. LEARN TO COOK. Shop the sales at one store only. What's on sale/clearance is what I am eating this week, but this only applies to fruit/veg, meat/dairy, and simple foods. Junk food on sale still isn't food. If you have to make all your own cakes and cookies, you'll eat less, because you can't be bothered. Don't buy ready made.

Transportation: Buy used, no-fun, and buy cash if you can. Keep it until it literally gives up the ghost. Keep it maintained. If you can't afford to do this, you can't afford a car SO GET RID OF IT. Any place that is within a 30 minute walk, WALK, don't waste the gas. You DO need the exercise. Combine errands or do errands to or from work so you aren't making extra trips. Obey traffic rules at all times, it keeps your insurance low. I have a 2012 Civic and pay under $70/month.

Time: STOP WASTING IT. Take all social media off your phone. Take all shopping apps off your phone. Throw away all advertising that comes into the house immediately. Get ad-blockers so you're not tempted to bloody shop. Your money belongs in your pocket, not theirs. No matter what they tell you, they're not doing you favours. If you aren't in front of a screen, you can cook, do laundry, clean your home, mend, iron, and take care of what is yours so it last longer. GET OFF SOCIAL MEDIA THAT WASTES YOUR TIME. The only thing I have is Tumblr and I am on it maybe a half hour every couple of days.

Entertainment: Use the library. Everything in it is free: movies, books, audiobooks, games, stuff, TV shows, printing costs only a few cents and saves you on stupid dried out ink for your printer you rarely use. Play board games or video games. I can rent both at the library. Visit your local pool, park, join a community sports team, take a hike, go to the beach. If it costs a lot, somebody is benefiting more than you. Change your way of thinking. Instead of thinking "a nice dinner out with a few drinks and a show $$$", think instead of going for a walk with a friend/family and maybe grabbing an ice-cream and a coffee at McDonalds or somewhere cheap. You'll have just as great of a conversation and your bank account won't look like a yawning empty cavern.

I guarantee you that I am just as happy as you, and probably, because I have no debt at all, I might even be more happy than you. Think about it.

Obsidian is a LIFESAVER for TTRPGs

This is a heads up for other DMs or even dedicated players, especially for those interested in detailed, interconnected notes that need to be organised.

Try out Obsidian. It's a stellar note-taking application/program that HAS FULLY SUPPORTED MODS (plugins) in the app itself

This isn't an advert or something, the app is just exactly what I've been wanting for a long time, that I never really acknowledged until someone showed me how insanely useful it could be.

Why does that matter?

The reason 'mods' are so good in such an application is that, usually in note-taking apps, developers stick to a vision and scope and don't go beyond it to keep it all simple for newcomers to pick it up.

The problem with most is that eventually, you get deep into using a note-taking application, and you find an extreme limitation that almost completely roadblocks your progress, and is very infuriatingly annoying to work around.

Obsidian has a solution to this. Community Plugins

The Community Plugins are basically mods that are created by other users like you to fulfill your needs and wants for the darn thing. They used it, found something lacking or something with potential and added it in.

So you can start it default to keep it simple, and when you find that you want something that you want or need, just search it up in-app and add it.

Et voilà! Low skill floor, very very high skill ceiling, extreme customisation as per your preferences and needs.

From YouTube videos to stock footage and Amazon influencer content — here’s how I make money while I sleep, and how you can too.

Passive income sounds like a dream — making money while you sleep. But for most people, it stays just that: a dream. I’m here to tell you it’s not only possible, but within reach. I’ve built several income streams that pay me day and night, and none of them required winning the lottery or being a financial genius. They required something much simpler: starting.

This article isn’t meant to impress you. It’s meant to inspire you. These 8 passive income streams actually work — and I know because they’ve worked for me. I’ll also break down how hard it is to get started with each one, what to expect, and how you can do it too.

Let’s get into it.

1. YouTube Ad Revenue: The Modern Digital Rental Property

Creating YouTube videos can be a goldmine — if done right. I currently run five monetized channels, and no, it’s not because I’m a genius. I just stuck with it.

YouTube pays creators through its Partner Program once you hit 500 subscribers and 3,000 hours of watch time in the past year. That might sound daunting, but trust me — with consistent effort, it’s very doable.

The secret isn’t to go viral. Viral hits die fast. The real key is evergreen content — videos that stay relevant for years. One of my old videos about an alarm clock still makes $10 a month after six years. That pays for my internet bill — every single month — from one video.

If you enjoy making videos or talking about things you love, YouTube can be a long-term passive income machine. And yes, your first 10 videos will be terrible. Make them anyway.

2. Affiliate Marketing: Earn Every Time Someone Buys

Affiliate links are powerful — especially when combined with your content. I use Amazon Associates to promote products I talk about. If someone clicks my link and buys anything within 48 hours, I get a commission. I’ve literally made money off diapers thanks to this.

Tech products give me around 4% commission. Other programs — like Sandmarc, which makes smartphone lenses — pay 10% or more. The key is to find affiliate programs in your niche and plug them into your content.

And yes, you can use both AdSense and affiliate links in the same video or blog post — stacking your earnings.

3. Amazon Influencer Videos: The Hidden Gem

This is currently my biggest income stream — short product review videos directly uploaded to Amazon’s product pages.

Why is this so effective? Because shoppers are already about to buy. The conversion rate is ridiculously high.

It used to be invite-only, but now anyone can apply. The only downside is competition. If you review an iPhone, you’re up against hundreds of others. But pick a product nobody else has covered? You might just own that page.

It’s inconsistent but lucrative. Some months, this stream covers all my living expenses.

4. Stock Video: Shoot Once, Sell Forever

If you enjoy filming — even casually — stock video is a great option. I’ve sold thousands of 10-second clips. Sites like Shutterstock or Adobe Stock pay $50–$100 per download. But rather than upload to them individually, I use a service called Blackbox, which does it for me (and takes a 10% cut — totally worth it).

Here’s the kicker: the clips that sell best aren’t always the ones you expect. Forget epic sunsets — sometimes a weird or mundane shot sells the most.

If you hate keywording (like me), Blackbox lets others do it in exchange for a cut of your earnings. You can even profit from footage you didn’t shoot yourself.

5. Stock Photography: Lower Earnings, But Still Worth It

This one’s small for me — I earn just a few dollars per month from stock photos. The reason? Oversaturation. There are billions of photos out there.

Still, it’s incredibly easy to get started. Apps like Shutterstock Contributor let you upload directly from your phone. And if you’ve already got a decent photo archive, it’s worth a shot.

Don’t forget: if there are people in your photo, you’ll need their permission — or set it as editorial use only.

6. Self-Published Books: Your Words, Your Royalties

A few years ago, I wrote a book in Swedish about how to succeed on YouTube. Took two weekends. That book still makes me money today.

Using platforms like Amazon KDP, you can publish print-on-demand and digital books without needing a publisher. You control the topic, the design, and most importantly — the price. Want to sell your next book for $1,000? You can.

The beauty of a book is that once it’s done, it sells forever.

7. Selling Music: Even If You’re Not a Musician

This one started as a joke. I made some background music for my videos in GarageBand — super simple stuff. One day, a French café owner asked if he could use my music in his shop. I said yes.

That gave me the idea to publish my tracks online. Now my music plays in places I’ve never been — and earns me income I never expected.

Even with zero musical training, you can create ambient tracks or loops and sell them on platforms like Bandcamp or license them for videos and podcasts.

8. Patreon: Support from Your Fans

If you’re a content creator, Patreon is an easy way to get recurring income from your most loyal supporters.

Set up takes minutes. You can offer tiers, behind-the-scenes content, or even just shoutouts in your content. Just remember: patrons support you for what you’re already doing. Don’t burn yourself out trying to offer extra perks.

I’ve used Patreon across several of my channels. The connection it builds with your audience is real — and so is the income.

Final Thoughts: Stop Overthinking, Start Creating

These aren’t theories. They’re income streams that pay me every day — sometimes in small amounts, sometimes enough to live off. They started as experiments, built with consistency and curiosity. And you can do it too.

If you’re feeling stuck in the 9-to-5 grind, wondering if there’s another way — there is. It’s not instant. It’s not effortless. But it is absolutely possible.

Start small. Pick one. Build it. Then another. Let your work compound over time.

Because here’s the truth: most wage slaves never even try to escape. You can. These passive income ideas are your first step.
