Let’s talk about the lack of a kiss? Let’s. For me, it didn’t make a difference. I read some comments here and there like "Oh, they made them less queer, they seem only BESTFRIENDS.” But that’s just not true. NICKY SAID IN ITALIAN "TI AMO" (in Italy, we have two ways to say “I love you,” and this one is deeper—used only in a romantic context with a romantic partner)

We did get scenes that are clearly, undeniably those of a couple. And that scene with Nicky’s monologue "i know your heart and that is immortal", and Joe opening up and admitting he’s afraid- aah...

We see Joe vulnerable. (what i wanted, I needed this. Because The Old Guard is dear to me also for its absence of harmful stereotypes.) Joe, who’s usually sharp, charming, the badass of the group.

Seeing his fragility with Nicky? That’s pure gold!

I know we’re in an era where if there aren’t sex scenes, then the ship supposedly doesn’t count. But this is what I needed. So many directors forget the most powerful part of a couple: love shown through actions, not flashy ones//also through the little things, the promises, the looks, their hands...

the jedi in the PT act like apathy is peak non-attachment

to avoid suffering - here the dark side - they avoid feeling at all, they avoid trying at all.

from my understanding, non-attachment in buddhism is about not clinging to things and accepting change.

whereas the jedi order have twisted non-attachment to not even try to save someone's life and prematurely accept its loss as inevitable (see: padme, shmi)

it's become apathy and lack of compassion

a more helpful response would have been: try to save her, but accept that you may be unsuccessful. you cannot control life or death, but that doesn't mean you should not try to save people from death if possible

This time, in this film, we have so much more material. The disappointment in Nicky's eyes, felt guilty, the sadness of not having cleared things up yet, the silence, the sorrow, and the harshness between people who love each other but are in conflict.

Please, let’s sit with this.

Sometimes I get the impression that people in the fandom believe that Finn becoming/being a Jedi would fix everything about his character arc. It’s an idea that’s treated like a healing balm that could soothe the irritation that his bungled arc elicits. Part of me understands the desire to buy in to that belief, but the rest of me knows that the problems with Finn’s character are far from skin-deep.

He doesn’t necessarily need to be force sensitive or be the main Jedi to be a great character. To me, the concept a rebel stormtrooper is more unique on its own than any of the Jedi we’ve seen. As we witnessed with TROS, Finn being revealed to be force sensitive felt like an attempt to appease certain fans, but diminished some of his more compelling moments in the process. All this to say, the issues with Finn’s arc didn’t start with TLJ and go beyond force sensitivity.

He very much doesn't need to be and, in fact, making him Force sensitive does a huge disservice to his character and is actively counter-productive.

And as I also get into in that post, pretty much everything his stans complain about in his arc and blame on TLJ are factors of what TFA establishes.

TLJ is the only film which lets Finn be his own person and treats him as the protagonist of his own plot. It is both comic and depressing that so many of his fans heap abuse on Rian for being the only writer to actually treat their fave like a SW hero and one of three pillars of a narrative trio rather than a sidekick.
