Through careful consideration (and my reread of Empire of Ivory) I have formed the following opinion on Tom Riley and Catherine Harcourt's relationship, as having happened off screen and under Laurence's nose:

Harcourt: Oh damn the captain's kind of hot maybe I'll flirt a little bit, get me some kind of weird situationship going for the voyage to distract myself from my dragon literally dying right before my eyes.

Harcourt: Oh, yeah sure I'll act as go-between for Riley and Laurence. Bonus eye candy for me!

Harcourt, notably easily impressed by attractive slightly older male attention (Choiseul), having to ask the broad shouldered stuck up polite navy captain to intimate dinners pretty much daily for months: What if...I made the weird situationship....a friends-with-benefits thing? He'll never see me again, and Jane told me about being careful and all.

Captain Riley, emotionally repressed navy man: *fell head over heels in love by the second dinner at the latest*

Captain Riley, has not seen a woman in literal months and can't get a it's-not-gay-if-you're-shipmates thing going on due to conflict of interest because he is the ranking captain: I know I am ruining a gentlewoman and I am wrecked with guilt over it but I can't stay away from her.

Captain Riley, sense of honour on par with Laurence: It's just improper to get married on a ship and also society will gossip tremendously. No, best thing is probably to write 10 000 love poems while we're stuck in cape town, and then pop the question as soon as we're back in England. Yes, this will work, there is no reason she wouldn't want to marry me, if we have the son for whom I've already picked out first and three middle names for he'll be filthy fucking rich, and if we have a daughter (who will be named after my mother then her mother and then second middle name her grandmother) I'm rich enough to support us three.

Harcourt, pregnant, facing the man she had a presumably months-long affair with: Why does Riley want to marry me all of a sudden???!!!

Riley, suddenly faced with a woman who Does Not Behave Like A Gentlewoman Should and actually has the post and orders to back it up: Why can't she see we HAVE to get married now, or else me, her AND the child will be ruined?? ALso side not, is there something wrong with me??? I though we were in LOVE!!!!!

Rewatching s2e5 and justine the french shopkeeper has a much heavier french accent within the bewitched ball environment why did i never notice this before back when aziraphale invited her she was like aziraphale mate i been living here for fifteen bloody years stop speaking what you call french but after she got jane austenified she was suddenly like ahhh bonsoir it is howdoyousay a fine night for dancing non? azdjdjdjdjdjd aziraphale couldn’t resist living his little french fantasy oh justine… l’horreur….

hi! i wanted to preface this by saying that i agree wholeheartedly with your statements about sally and how her mistakes were very uhh howdoyousay- in line with her age? that she messed up in very understandable ways for someone her age and stuff

but also, i feel like you might be giving the archie writers too much credit here? archie was created in a time when it was very much appropriate and encouraged to write women and girls that way (that way being: obsessed with boys, incompetent, restricted to side character status, little to no agency, etc etc) and even now women are still written that way. the way sally acts a lot of the time i dont personally believe can be chalked up to simple "shes a kid who makes mistakes like a kid would" unless you deliberately disregard the factors of sexism and misogyny that went into writing her

i appreciate ur politeness, i thought i made it clear i knew it wasn’t on purpose and that sally was objectively written in a sexist way, but ig i wasn’t blatant enough. i’m not trying to wave away everything that’s happened to her either, i was kind of vague about THAT so i apologize but i was mostly talking about The Slap. the thing abt analyzing archie is that almost NONE of it was on purpose. liking something makes me imagine depth and patterns where there aren’t any. i didn’t mean those posts to come off as dismissive, i thought it was clear but i gen apologize if i wasnt. my point wasn’t that sally is written in a feminist way, actually, it was largely that “none of the things she did in archie should’ve happened because she’s an epic girl boss who never fucks up”, isn’t an AWESOME take either especially since fucking up is kind of a big thing archie characters do a lot, and sally shouldn’t be exempt. anyways if i wasn’t clear enough initially then let it be clarified here, im intentionally reading into a story i love to find depth where there isn’t any because sally is a character i love and the way she was treated by the writers fucking sucked
