Mechanical Faces of Beauty - Hohzo
Bot-11: Home
Home is the hardest one to design because while home is described by everyone as a place, personal experience has shown that home is more of the friends and family made throughout life. Instead of creating a robot that was a house, the design was inspired more by a young kid, who acts more like a young friend/sibling. With them, any place can feel like home, whether it is a house, restaurant, or even a gathering place. They are meant to give a person that sense of comfort and nostalgia as they portray themself as young and childish, while still giving enough care to those they call friends or family. Along with the comfort of the home that they share, they also come with a keyboard on their chest that can be used as a computer, for whatever use the other person needs, for either fun or needing to get something done without worry.
Bot-12: Connected
While it is difficult to showcase a robot being connected to all things, the best way to showcase the meaning would be to combine both the calculations of machinery and the lustfulness of nature. By the harmony of both past and future, this robot can survive far longer than it was intended to. The overgrown plant life is also able to ride onto the robot and grow, becoming a small environment to survive the mechanical world. The large machine has come to terms with needing nature on its back to survive, so it uses the natural resources nature has made to repair itself to good condition, being careful with its movement so they don’t disturb or destroy natural life. Without each other, neither can survive, so they must work together in harmony to keep each other living long and prosper in their new life.

I woke up with a choice to make
Do I buy a rope?
Or throw myself
Of a 100-meter cliff
Or just take all my Prozac pills...
Either way I just want the pain to stop
The end be quick
And go to the other side

Hozhó
Growing up the elders would spoke highly of women, Indigenous women, and how resilient we are. My masaní (maternal grandmother) spoke highly of the women in our family, I mean who wouldn't. These women grew to be teachers, paramedic, successful multi-business owner, and government employee.
I remember the day I became a woman. I swear my life flashed before my eyes. 12 years old, sitting there holding the toilet paper, shaking from fear. I was terrified.
Kinaaldá. (The coming of age ceremony for young-women)
I don't really remember my kinaaldá much. I remember the adults including the medicine man would basically speak on the importance of becoming a young woman.
No sweets. No salt. No sleep. To take care of your body physically and nutritionally. I now have the ability to create life. Respecting the elders and following their guidance. The list goes on...
Let's be real, the only clear thought I had was how sleep deprived I was and staying in the hogan. Also the anxiety of the constant reminder of the responsibilities in being a young woman filled my mind.
Most importantly I was told to Walk in Beauty.
Walking in Beauty ( balance and harmony in life) : Hozhó
I never really understood that term.
Unfortunately the truth is during this time I was SA'd multiple times by a family member. The petrifying thought of, "I can have a baby for these monsters now?" Played on repeat over and over. Struggling with PTSD, corporal punishment, anxiety, disassociation, and depression since childhood.
I guess you can say my path has been rough thus far. The hitchhikers I've encountered over the years were definitely some strange creatures along the way.
Hozhó.
I tell this story of my past experience with Hozhó because I have been redefining this term lately. The path has been dark for some time but I am now able to say I've found the light hozhò has to offer.
Time to explore the road not taken now that I've found this light.
be kind to yourself.

Walk in Beauty Always
Part of the attitude of the Navajo culture is the concept of Hozro, which is to Live in Beauty, Walk in Beauty Always.
Walking in Beauty: Closing Prayer from the Navajo Way Blessing
In beauty I walk With beauty before me I walk With beauty behind me I walk With beauty above me I walk With beauty around me I walk It has become beauty again
Hózhóogo naasháa dooShitsijí’ hózhóogo naasháa dooShikéédéé hózhóogo naasháa dooShideigi hózhóogo naasháa dooT’áá altso shinaagóó hózhóogo naasháa dooHózhó náhásdlíí’Hózhó náhásdlíí’Hózhó náhásdlíí’Hózhó náhásdlíí’
Today I will walk out, today everything negative will leave me I will be as I was before, I will have a cool breeze over my body. I will have a light body, I will be happy forever, nothing will hinder me. I walk with beauty before me. I walk with beauty behind me. I walk with beauty below me. I walk with beauty above me. I walk with beauty around me. My words will be beautiful. In beauty all day long may I walk. Through the returning seasons, may I walk. On the trail marked with pollen may I walk. With dew about my feet, may I walk. With beauty before me may I walk. With beauty behind me may I walk. With beauty below me may I walk. With beauty above me may I walk. With beauty all around me may I walk. In old age wandering on a trail of beauty, lively, may I walk. In old age wandering on a trail of beauty, living again, may I walk. My words will be beautiful…
Click to hear the prayer spoken in Navajo by Wanye Wilson, a Navajo member.
Linguistic Note: The word “Hozho” in Dine’ (roughly translated) Concept of Balance and Beauty. Consideration of the nature of the universe, the world, and man, and the nature of time and space, creation, growth, motion, order, control, and the life cycle includes all these other Navajo concepts expressed in terms quite impossible to translate into English. Some Navajos might prefer the term: Nizhoni” meaning ‘just beauty.”
