I love the way you tally up the sorting so Sirius for the sorting hat questions??
Anonymous asked:
Love your sorting hat questions!! Could you do sirius??
Thank you! 💖
Ooohh, Sirius is an interesting sorting, alright. Like, he's definitely a Gryffindor, but I think it's a little more complicated once we break him down. I think he has more Slytherin in him than he would like to confess. Let's get into it:
1. Problem Solving - what is the go-to method of said character to solve problems in a situation that isn't a life-and-death threat. Both without a time limit and on a time crunch.
Without a time limit, Slytherin, hands down. Sirius is cunning and intelligent and can and does plan ahead when he has the time for it. We see it in both GoF & OotP, his approach is to tell Harry to be wary and cautious, he spends a lot of his time post-Azkaban before GoF collecting intel that could be useful.
When there is a time limit, I think I'll go with Gryffindor. He can be very reckless and impulsive when he needs to do something quickly without any time to plan.
2. Problem-solving under threat of death - when the situation gets really dangerous, how do they deal with it?
When danger comes, Sirius is self-sacrificing to a fault. This is true when he goes to the DoM, true when he sets himself as the fake secret keeper to be killed, and true when he goes back to the UK (endangering himself) when he believes (rightly so) that Harry is in danger. He is impulsive and reckless with his own life, so, of course, a point goes to Gryffindor.
3. What they aspire for - what do they want to accomplish for themselves. Be it an ambition towards a job or something they want to just be better at.
By the time we meet Sirius, any life ambitions he may have had are long gone — washed away by Azkaban and grief. The only real goal he has left is to protect Harry. Now, loyalty is either Hufflepuff or Gryffindor to me (I know some fanon associates it with Slytherin, but I disagree due to how I see the houses graph). In the case of Sirius' brand of loyalty, which is very self-sacrificing and not entirely just, I'm going to give him a Gryffindor point. This loyalty of his will come back more in this post. A lot.
But, if we go with Sirius before Azkaban, I think he wanted to make a point. To prove he isn't just another Black and that he can do good. Because this motivation comes from a place of spite, and pride, I'd give him a Slytherin point for this.
4. Motivations - why do they do the things they do? What gets them up in the morning?
After Azkaban — Harry.
He escaped Azkaban and re-joined the Order because of Harry. Everything he does is motivated out of loyalty. Even before Azkaban, loyalty to his friends (James and Lily) and the Order is what motivated him. His very intense loyalty is just such a staple of this character. So he gets another Gryffindor point (because this is still the self-sacrificing blind loyalty to people, combined with his sense of duty).
There is another motivation I want to bring up, though — pride. A lot of Sirius' restlessness in OotP comes from his pride. He wants to be useful not just out of duty and a sense of righteousness (though, there's that too), it's also out of pride and spite. Being treated like a child who can't fend for himself in his own house and getting orders from Molly and Snape was a big factor in his later recklessness. He is pretty arrogant at times, and it's an important part of his character that I want to note. So, he's getting a Slytherin point as well.
5. Defining trait - if you need to choose one trait to define them, what would it be?
I feel like I'm repeating myself by this point, but - loyal is the word that comes to mind. But, it's not the Hufflepuff sort of loyal, it's the kind of loyal where he'd hide a body for James if needed. He'd kill if James/Harry asked. He'd die for the people he loves in a heartbeat, no hesitation, no questions asked.
So, I have to give another Gryffindor point.
(I debated whether to make it a Slytherin point, since this is the same loyalty that makes Narcissa lie to Voldemort, but I think it's actually a Gryffindor point toward Narcissa's sorting, not the other way around, as I mentioned)
6. Valued trait - if they had to pick their favorite trait about themselves, what would they pick?
I think Sirius would pick a skill. He'd pick something useful. Something that allows him to feel like he has something meaningful to contribute. He knows he is smart:
“You might,” said Lupin darkly from behind his book. “We’ve still got Transfiguration, if you’re bored you could test me... Here.” He held out his book. Sirius snorted. “I don’t need to look at that rubbish, I know it all.”
(OotP)
But that isn't what he prides himself on; that's just obvious to him. Like, I said, I think what he values about himself are the things that make him feel useful to others more than to himself — which gives him a Hufflepuff point.
7. Values - what traits do they completely despise in others? What traits do they appreciate in others?
Loyalty. I feel like a broken record at this point, but the one thing Sirius despises above all else is someone who is disloyal:
“You don’t understand!” whined Pettigrew. “He would have killed me, Sirius!” “THEN YOU SHOULD HAVE DIED!” roared Black. “DIED RATHER THAN BETRAY YOUR FRIENDS, AS WE WOULD HAVE DONE FOR YOU!”
(PoA)
In turn, loyalty is his highest mark of a person's value. He is incredibly loyal to those he cares for, and he expects everyone else to conform to his sense of loyalty. (It's why Ron and Hermione grow on him as fast as they do. They are loyal to Harry)
Now, we already talked about Sirius' loyalty, so let's just add 2 points to Gryffindor.
There is a reason his animagus form is a dog — he's loyal.
But, I also want to add a surprise Ravenclaw point, for this:
“Listen, I knew Bertha Jorkins,” said Sirius grimly. “She was at Hogwarts when I was, a few years above your dad and me. And she was an idiot. Very nosy, but no brains, none at all. It’s not a good combination, Harry. I’d say she’d be very easy to lure into a trap.
(GoF)
I think Sirius is truly offended and appalled by certain levels of stupidity and lack of manners. I know, shocking. But what makes it offensive is that she's an idiot, if she was smart and nosy, fine, but stupid and nosy, yeah, no. As I mentioned earlier, Sirius is smart, and he thinks of himself as smart, and he's arrogant enough to look down on people he considers idiots (which include Peter when they were teens).
8. And finally, which house do they want?
After that one conversation on the train with James, I would bet Sirius asked the Hat for Gryffindor:
“My whole family have been in Slytherin,” he said. “Blimey,” said James, “and I thought you seemed all right!” Sirius grinned. “Maybe I’ll break the tradition. Where are you heading, if you’ve got the choice?” James lifted an invisible sword. “’Gryffindor, where dwell the brave at heart!’ Like my dad.”
(DH)
Now, I, unfortunately, need to hand this point to Slytherin. Because Sirius isn't asking to be in Gryffindor because he believes all Slytherins are evil, or because he wants to be good, it's not that quiet yet. He wants to spite his family and hang out with James. He wants to prove a point about not being like his family for reasons that are more personal than moral, at this point in time.
Tallying up the points:
G - 6, S - 4, H - 1, R - 1
Which gives us a very clear Gryffindor with some Slytherin tendencies — he is a Gryffindor — loyal, self-sacrificing, brave, and reckless — but he does have a ruthless streak to him, the capacity for cruelty, plenty of pride, and the cunning and wit when he wants to use it. So, while he is 100% a Gryffindor, and I won't sort him into any other house, he has more of the Black family in him than he'd like to admit.

I was figuring out how many students I wanted to have in James Potter's year, and I made these graphs.
In ALITS, I made it so the 1918 flu strain was so bad that pepper-up potion was not enough (which would also track with how the pandemic went for Muggles). Mel suggested a Dragon Pox outbreak - pick your pandemic, really.
We know JKR has said something about 1000 students being at Hogwarts, and if in the early 1900s there were ~110 students per year, that would track. For Harry's year, we know there were 40, but that was also births at the end of the war - knowing that birthrates decrease with war, I put this roughly together and got an estimated class size of ~70 for James Potter's class.
Blood Purity and a Declining Birth Rate
Voldemort’s promise to restore pureblood supremacy isn’t just a call to arms; it’s a lifeline for a community terrified of its own obsolescence.
The wizarding world is haunted by more than just literal ghosts; it is a world that seems to be shrinking, its former grandeur fading into memory. Signs of decline are everywhere: Hogwarts, once a bustling center of magical education, has unused classrooms and seemingly fewer students than one would expect for the only magical school in Great Britain and Ireland. Diagon Alley, supposedly the heart of the magical community in one of the world’s largest cities, consists of just a few streets. Even wizarding media is centralized in a single newspaper.
These clues suggest a world that was once much larger than it is now. There are references to better days and implications that Hogwarts isn’t what it used to be now that Dumbledore is in charge. This decline is tied closely to the waning influence of pureblood families, who are becoming a smaller and smaller fraction of the wizarding population. Muggle-born and half-blood students outnumber them at Hogwarts, a shift that threatens the social and political dominance Purebloods have held for centuries.
What’s particularly interesting is how purebloods respond—or fail to respond—to their declining numbers. Unlike other extremist groups like Christian fundamentalists or white nationalists, who often promote large families as a "sacred duty" to maintain their cultural dominance (Hitler gave medals to women who had five or more children), pureblood families in Harry Potter are remarkably small. This lack of larger pureblood families raises questions about their long-term strategies for survival. If blood purity is their highest priority, why don’t purebloods prioritize reproduction as a means to preserve their numbers?
Draco Malfoy, the prime school-age pureblood antagonist of the main character, is an only child. Sirius Black and Regulus Black come from an ancient family with an extensive family tree, yet they have no siblings beyond each other and only three cousins. Bellatrix Lestrange, one of the most fanatical proponents of blood purity, didn’t have children until her late 40s—and even then, it is a single child (and only if you accept Cursed Child as canon).
Harry Potter himself comes from a pureblood family, but his only living relatives are his Muggle aunt and cousin. Neville Longbottom is raised by his grandmother, and while he mentions elderly relatives, there’s no indication of cousins his own age. Even the Weasleys, the exception to the rule with their seven children, seem to lack extended family—there are no Weasley cousins attending Hogwarts during Harry’s time.
The First Wizarding War can partially explain the small size of Harry’s generation: people were afraid to have children during Voldemort’s rise to power, and the violence of that decade wiped out much of a generation. However, this alone doesn’t account for the decline. Something must have happened in the previous generation as well. For several generations now, pureblood families haven’t been having enough children to maintain their population.
Another explanation could be that their intense focus on lineage and prestige means they are selective about marriage and procreation, limiting family size to maintain "purity" rather than expanding it. Marrying within a shrinking pool of acceptable partners likely leads to fewer unions and, consequently, fewer children. Additionally, inter-family rivalries, societal pressures, and a rigid class system may discourage collaboration between pureblood families to ensure survival.
While we see pureblood families of different economic status in the series it is also worth noting that smaller families may be a deliberate choice to consolidate wealth and maintain power within a single branch of the family, ensuring that resources aren’t dispersed among too many inheritors. By keeping family sizes small, they can preserve their status and influence in a society where lineage and financial stability are critical markers of power.
Alternatively, external factors not mentioned in canon could help explain the dwindling pureblood numbers. Perhaps a catastrophic outbreak of dragon pox ravaged Britain at the turn of the century, disproportionately affecting pureblood families due to their insular communities and close intermarriages. An economic crisis could also have made it difficult for even wealthy families to support large households, especially given the high costs of maintaining pureblood status and reputation. Such events would compound the social and cultural pressures already discouraging large families, contributing to a steady decline in pureblood populations.
The decline in a pureblood population creates a simmering panic among purebloods. They perceive that their traditions and way of life are changing, and instead of adapting to demographic shifts and embracing a more inclusive future, they cling to fear and resentment. They blame Muggle-borns for their loss of power, projecting their anxieties onto those they perceive as outsiders for “stealing” magic.
When those in positions of power feel their dominance slipping, they often construct narratives in which the oppressed will rise up and do to them what they, the ruling class, have done to others. This paranoia leads purebloods to double down on their exclusivity, believing that maintaining their power is the only way to avoid losing everything. Their refusal to adapt blinds them to the potential benefits of inclusivity: a larger magical community, a stronger economy with more people working wizarding jobs and purchasing wizarding goods, and a broader cultural foundation to sustain their traditions.
This fear and resistance to change create fertile ground for Voldemort’s rise. He exploits the purebloods’ anxieties, offering them a roadmap for radicalization. Instead of addressing the root causes of their decline, purebloods embrace the Dark Lord’s extreme methods, leading to catastrophic consequences.
The determination to "purify" the wizarding world and maintain their position of power ironically accelerates their downfall. As Death Eaters enact Voldemort’s vision, their crusade doesn’t simply target individual Muggle-borns but entire families—wiping out, or nearly wiping out, powerful, established wizarding lineages like the Bones, McKinnons, Longbottoms, and Potters. This destructive cycle ensures that even the pureblood families themselves suffer massive losses, further accelerating the population decline they sought to prevent.
Purebloods who embrace the politics of purity in an attempt to stave off extinction ultimately hasten their own downfall, prioritizing exclusivity and radicalization over growth and adaptation.

unfortunately i've done absolutely nothing today but make more graphs and even out my statistics a little so here we have:
accumulated number of fics over word count (left) and the whole things also normalised (right)
i fitted a interpolation spine to my 26 data points that i took from ao3 and used that one to get more apprxoimated data points for:
number of fics over wc, but this time not accumulated! so this shows which wcs are the most popular. you can see a clear spike at around 100 words, and i am happily blaming the existence of drabbles on that. and since logaithmic plots are difficult to actually envision in relation to real life, here the same thing also as a linear plot (+ zoomed in version of the beginning since you cant read anything from it otherwise)
now a few little end notes:
this is all still approximated! i had a very limited number of sample points, and while i was taking them the number of ao3 fics still changed so even those sample points have a small margin of error
i would expect that similar to, though less extreme spike than that at 100 words exist for other significant word counts (1000, 5000,...). i assume those spikes would lessen with higher word counts and the overall trend is still as shown
take everything with a little grain of salt and feel free to ask questions and correct me on whatever you see fit
because i've noticed people (especially in the marauders fandom) call more and more long works on ao3 short fics, and because i saw this post of ao3 word count statistics, i was curious what this looks like now and did some statistics myself
specific notes here:
the line graph follows the same pattern as the pie charts. the points are merely set at the maximum word count included, but they represent all the works between the marked wordcount and the previous one (so a marker at 10k means works from 5001-10000 words).
the grey part of the pie chart combines all the works that are novel length and longer. note that between the marauders fandom and all of ao3 that percentage more than doubles
there is most definitely an overlap between wolfstar and jegulus fics, so i would assume that several of the jegulus fics at 500k+ are also included in the wolfstar fics and vice versa. i wanted a marauders overview overall, but since we don't have a certain way to view that, i simply went with the most popular marauders ship to get a rough overview of the fandom
i did a seperate category with works for 0 words because these are usually podfics and fanart, however i realise that even in the 1-100 words category there are a lot of 'placeholder fics' (which, btw, go against ao3 tos). the 0 word marker is missing in the line graph, so imagine there are some more lower points towards the left
the last marker on the line graph just indicates fics longer than 500k, i just set it to an arbitrary number >500k for visualisation
so i think it is in fact noticable that the harry potter fandoms, but especially the marauders one have a tendency for very long works, which also explains why we are not very good at judging when something is a long fic
as a reminder, in traditional publishing, 20-50k words is considered a novella, 50-100k is a novel, 100-200k is an epic, and above that we don't really have a word for it. use this knowledge to be more impressed with your local fic writers and give them a pat on the shoulder and a comment in their inbox to let them know they're incredible for writing fics, both the short ones and ones that are several novels long :)
#hp#*#this is literally all ive been doing today#i got so focussed on it i didnt check my phone once and fully forgot to consume life sustaining substances#i find the notion that jegulus people write more drabbles than wolfstar people increedibly fascintating and i have no idea if that is corre#but like. the graph says so?#if i was better at programming i would probably do this a lot more nicely and accurately...#long post#Hyperfocus git hard with this one but i was having fun#No longer even trying to show things just playing around with colourful lines

Have you ever done an analysis of which fandoms are most dominated by a single ship?
I hadn't done so before. I just took a quick pass at doing so, but only among the biggest fandoms on AO3 as of Jan 2024 (ones with over 10K public works at that time). I sorted them by the size of their biggest ship relative to the size of the fandom. This gives us a bunch of very big fandoms with a high % of works tagged with a particular ship:
The raw data used to make this graph, including the corresponding biggest ships, is available in a spreadsheet here, or at the end of this post.
A few notes:
This is based on January 2024 data. Some things may have changed!
Not all these works are necessarily about these ships. Especially in the cases where the ships are canon, they may often be tagged as background ships.
There are undoubtedly many smaller AO3 fandoms that have higher percentages devoted to the top ship.
I removed some highly overlapping fandoms (e.g., Good Omens book fandom).
This is AO3 data only, and (as always!) AO3 does not represent fandom overall. In particular, ship popularity tends to vary A LOT by archive/platform. See some past cross-platform shipping comparisons from 2019 (comparing het vs. slash vs. gen on Wattpad/FFN/AO3), and 2014 (comparing popular ships from HP, SPN, and Sherlock on AO3/FFN). One highlight:
Raw data:

Gwyn's family tree members references and genetics (! updates occured since the first time posting)
(An ask reply to an anon)
(A graph for convenience)
Alright, I will go with what we can certainly make out of the family tree! ...almost. There are definitely some missing links! You don't have to accept all of my suggestions here and only focus on 100% confirmed ones, but I will explain why I added them! Let's start in order!
Gwyn, his mother, his uncle Lloyd and... sister? cousin? fifth known child?
Unfortunately, yes, we can't be sure of Gwyn's eyes color since it appears to be just reflection of fire, nor of his hair color as he looks pretty aged!
UPDATE 01/12/2025: There is a datamined image of Gwyn without facial hair by kingborehaha on Bluesky ( x ). So, he had a really strong and square jaw XD Might or might not get inherited by Nameless King?
However, Lloyd is his uncle! It was never retconned in Dark Souls 3 despite what some people might believe, as he is called "collateral relative" ( 傍系 ) and not "derivative fraud" in Japanese script! This fits, so he was denounsed as an Allfather on the notion that direct descendant of Gwyn had more rights to it than just an uncle! His name also follows the pattern; Lloyd means 'grey', whereas Gwyn means 'white'!
At the same time, certain locations connected with the Way of White stuff (Sunlit Altar, altar in Undead Paris that Reah prays at, and altar in Catacombs where you find Darkmoon Seanse ring) all feature a statue of a woman in a crown, that is called a Goddess, that holds an infant with a sword:
I do not believe it is mother of Nameless King at all, since 1) statues of his were destroyed, so why keep the infant one? 2) his trademark weapon is spear, not sword, but Gwyn's IS sword and 3) this statue appears to be some 'common' object connected with Way of White! It represents three children of Gwyn as Filianore was not yet planned in Dark Souls 1 times; Sunlit Altar for NK since this is where you do Warrior of Sunlight covenant, Church in Undead Parish for Gwynevere since Reah prays there and one of the Seath's Channelers (who are notorious for kidnapping Gwynevere's maidens) hunts there, and Catacombs one for Gwyndolin because you find the ring required to meet him and one of his miracles (Tranquil Walk of Peace) near it! Would not that make it fitting if it was the grandmother of the tree children of the Sun?
Now, I am going to do something I normally dread to do. I am going to..... *swallows nervously* quote the text of the items descriptions in this post, instead of posting screenshots. :s Okay this will be VERY trying, but I have to do it to fit within images limit per post!
WHITE SEANCE RING
A divine ring entrusted to the head bishop of the Way of White and apostle to Allfather Lloyd, uncle to Lord Gwyn. It grants additional attunement slots. The head bishop of the Way of White is the guardian of law and caste, and one of the great royals of Thorolund.
LLOYD'S SWORD RING
Ring given to knights of the Way of White. Depicts Allfather Lloyd's Sword of Law. Boosts attack power when HP is full. Much time has passed since the worship of Lloyd was common in the Way of White. The clerics of Carim had always strongly asserted that Lloyd was a derivative fraud, and that the Allfather title was self-proclaimed. (Japanese script has 'collateral relative' (傍系) rather than 'derivative fraud')
GOLD COIN
Coin made of gold, with Allfather Lloyd and his white halo shown on its face. (...)
Lloyd have been a very relevant figure amongst clerics, taking Gwyn's role after his death until Gwyndolin grew some backbone, and 'white halo' is basically a symbol of the Way of White! However, as an uncle, he'd have to be a brother of either Gwyn's mother or father (I choose mother), and Gwyn's parents are never mentioned... I assume they died earlier. Maybe, like the statue with Gwyn in infancy suggests, too early and Gwyn was basically raised by Lloyd!
UPDATE 03/08/2025: I want to further dig into the matter: Lloyd and mother of Gwyn are gods of... what? For Lloyd, it is clear: god of Law and Caste, but I mean to refer the element!
'Aureole' is another word for a halo! The unusual, custom-made magic that Gwyndolin shared with Oolacile ( x ) uses the images of halos as well, though it seems to be connected with Oolacile requiring sort of "special attention" from Gods as Gwyndolin himself uses normal blue sorceries, and so does literally every human sorcerer in the setting who isn't connected to Oolacile! In this case, it must be connected with Manus and containing the darkness, not unlike what Filianore does with Ringed City.
But whereas magic and miracles of Gwyndolin were developed as separate tradition to the Way of White way back before he did claim title of Allfather himself multiple centuries later, Way of White Corona refers to initial Way of White! I think the halos in the sky might be Lloyd's element! They reflect the 'dimmed' sunlight, as they appear as refracted light resulted by ice crystals in the sky or a very particular clouding. You won't see halos in the clear sky, which thematically fits with how he is "grey" and not "white"! Meanwhile, the speculated mother of Gwyn is depicted with birds. I think mother of Gwyn was a Goddess of the Sky, and Lloyd is a God of clouding and light halos! The siblings are both connected with the sky, which IS where Sun and Moon shine!
We will get to Seath and Shira properly in due time, but in Japanese, Seath's description uses 外戚, which means in-law, related by marriage to a (female) relative of Gwyn! I don't think it is Gwynevere; she is only ever stated to marry Flann, besides, Yorshka calling Gwynevere a sister while also being child of Seath feels like a dealbreaker to me! I don't think it is Fillianore either, since she was given away to keep Pygmy away! But, Shira is a "daughter of the Duke and descendant of Gods" as she states, and also can use lightning that can be a gene if both Gwyn and NK owning it is of any indication! She is also of royal line!
The thing is... I am not sure who this mysterious relative of Gwyn is, specifically. Sister? Cousin? Unmentioned child? (if Gwyndolin and Filianore were never "showcased" unlike NK and Gwynevere, maybe someone else was dodging the spotlight? heh)
UPDATE 03/08/2025: My justification for this idea will be more apparent later, when we do get to Shira and Seath, but I've decided Caffrey fits in the place of a mysterious relative of Gwyn that Seath married:
I go back and forth on making her either a sister of Gwyn or a cousin (so, daughter of his uncle Lloyd). But, as I already speculate Lloyd and Gwyn's mother being connected with the sky themes, it could give Caffrey a reason to have wings by internal lore logic, and not just because the irl mythology Goddess Fortuna is commonly depicted with the winsgs x). It would for sure give Shira's feathers decoration double meaning, but I don't think it is a problem!
Nameless King / Faraam and... Izalith?

He is another character with whom I am not sure! It appears that he not always had his wonderful mane, but I am not certain whether his hair always was white or not! Unlike other known children of Gwyn, that appear to combine Gwyn's traits with second parent's, NK is also kind of just Gwyn but lesser, having nothing much to stand out by his own...? Gwyn's hair is most likely grey from aging, and this could apply to NK as well since he lived for a very long time. He also looks like a husk now, he is not exactly in his healthiest state when we meet him!
UPDATE 02/01/2025: I actually ended up loving the idea that Nameless King might be a child of affair between Gwyn and Izalith! Like I said, his siblings all have unique traits to stand out for (Gwynevere's healing and "bounty", Filianore's connection with Darkness and Gwyndolin's Moonlight), but he is simply like Gwyn and just has his lightning! So, perhaps his second parent did not have a unique affinity to stand out for, ie was not a God (or a dragon, for that matter)! I think Izalith might fit into this scheme as someone who would still be a figure important enough to be a mother of someone accepted as a legitimate heir of Gwyn, when Fire/Chaos was not always something she'd just pass onto her children:
IZALITH STAFF
Ancient catalyst of the Witch of Izalith and her daughters, used long before the dawn of chaos and of pyromancy.(...)
Him not having any flame or chaos corruption might be simply because he was born before flame became part of Izalith's body! At the same time, him being God of War is thematically appropriate for such parenting! Even putting aside the fact that Izalith and her daughters, indeed, waged war against Gods in the end, Fromsoft consistently has at least one region per game inspired by East Asian places on our planet be torn apart by war or idealising it or both! Izalith (the place) takes inspirations from both Japan and Cambogia, so with their track record it'd be entirely possible if culture of Izalith was pushing heavily on war, and Nameless King inherited the mindset for the lack of better term! After all, Gwyn's sunlight is not just a weapon, yet Nameless King had a focus on this specifically!
Additional point towards this idea is that Queen of Venn (Lost Sinner) and King of Alken (Old Iron King) both had an affair that went nowhere if ended in disaster and inherited souls of Izalith and Gwyn respectively! Souls of the Old Ones resonate with ones with most similar fates and essense, so would not it work even better had Izalith and Gwyn had an affair as well? + a sillier possible """evidence""": Lion people of Forossa are to Nameless King what crow mutants are to Velka, and they are all either brown or dark yellow! Whereas Quelaag and Quelana have brown hair, datamining (through loading NPC via debug menu mind you, simply removing helmet won't show this secret) revealed another daughter, Grana, has dark blond hair ( x )! Who knows, what if that's her genes x)
We only see the appearances of four of Izalith's daughters, and whereas three have normal humans appearance (ignore the lower body mutations!!!), Fair Lady is a little off! Izalith, on the other hand, appears to have a grey skin and blue lips! And it isn't necessarily a result of Chaos corruption or illness or anything of the sort (like look at Queelag having regular human skin tone)! Whereas intended game's lighting makes Fair Lady look as though she has grey skin and pale yellow-ish hair, her textures reveal grey hair and also a normal human skin-tone albeit sickly pale, as well as her stated to be a "deformed" member of the family:
WHITE HAIR TAILSMAN:
...This lock of hair belonged to a deformed member of the chaos witches, mothers of the art of pyromancy. (...)
That clearly refers to how she was born rather than her current mutation, because by this logic Quelaag would be "deformed" too, and yet she isn't singled out like this! Yet some gene that effected Fair Lady independent of Chaos is within the family. What remaining three sisters are like is up to interpretation, but for all we know, the mysterious cold colored skin of Izalith could be inherited.. With the idea of her being the mother of Nameless king, there is a non-zero chance that he'd have grey skin even in his healthy state, independently of what he ended like! Or dark red eyes like Quelaag and Queelana. That'd make an interesting design I guess x)
UPDATE 03/04/2025: I've had a sudden breakthrough that might hint at how to design Nameless King! It will touch upon some of the characters that are discussed in more detail below but right now it IS important to bring them up!
I've noticed that four children of Gwyn seem to have a 'descent' that applies to the stages of the day, minus the "morning" child that would logically follow after the lastborn Gwyndolin! I concluded Gwyn himself works as the morning person of this family, seeing how his sunlight is also distinctly orange, and orange sunlight applies to both rising sun and setting sun! Besides, a morning child appearing after Gwyndolin would mean the start of the new "day", and we all know Gwyn holds onto preserving the current era at all cost. Thematically, I think it would fit for him to never give up the position of "morning", though it is sadly funny how he can't escape the ride of time even within the comfort of having a family hahah
Gwynevere not only has very orange miracles, but also her illsion creates an unmistakable sunset look over Anor Londo! If slight grey in her color scheme indicates the night approaching, it makes it super likely that both 1) Gwyn might just have grey hair regardless of age since sun rises after the night just ended and 2) Nameless King doesn't have any grey in his color scheme and his current white hair is not his natural hair color!
The choices I am seeing for his hair, and possibly eyes, are either golden or red!
Nameless King might have had red hair, like suggested by the way Solaire depicts the same sun as what is associated with his warriors and decorations Ornstein and Dragonslayer have!
On the other hand, strong argument in favor of golden hair is that literally nowhere in the family we ever have even a hunch of red-haired gene! It is always grey, black, brown or blond. His lion kin also only have either brown fur and manes or golden ones, when you'd think changing body upon worshipping an explicitly "red-maned lion" should've manifested somehow! The 'red mane' imagery might've been strictly symbolic, to reflect his authority rather than literal look!
I suppose I favor golden hair (and eyes?) version more, especially since he is more proto-Godwyn than proto-Radahn! He could also combine both here and there! For example, his eyes could be golden but turn redder closer to the edges. Or maybe he had red coloration initially, as Gwyn's firstborn, when he was still fighting with him against Dragons, and changing into sunny yellow/golden was the result of Gwyn starting new era? Elden Ring also has a lore point about things now yellow having before been red in their primal form. I guess I go back and forth with him, but at this rate I am certain about his warm coloration at least!
Gwynevere and her mother Fina / Nehma
Thankfully, Gwynevere HAS decent references, and could even shed a light (ba dum tss) on some more genetics!
Her eyes look rather orange, just like the sunlight associated with her healing miracles (Bountiful Sunlight and Soothing Sunlight), yet there is a little grey circle at the pupil! x) Fun fact: she has distinct moles on her body ( x )! Though you can observe from her textures too:
As for Fina, I really think she is a SUPER likely candidate for her mother!
Notice how her symbol is Estus Flask, and Gwynevere is strongly associated with healing! As for why Nehma = Fina:
NAME-ENGRAVED RING
A special ring that can be engraved with the name of a god. Becomes easier to connect to worlds of players who chose the same god. There are countless vestiges of long-lost gods in the ruins of Drangleic. Or perhaps they are the very same gods as ours, only known by different names.
Another case right here is Pharis being named Evlana in Drangleic, as well as NK being known by the name Faraam! Similarly, Fina got another name, since she IS Goddess of Love!
EMBRACED ARMOR OF FAVOR
Armor of Lautrec the Embraced, representing the goddess Fina's love. The goddess's arms wrap around it, as if to embrace the wearer.
^ This line makes me wonder whether Fina was not a regular humanoid God, but had literally golden body! There is a nameless and faceless Blacksmith Deity in the setting whose death gave birth to Titanite Demons, so why not another atypical God like this? I can imagine her being mostly non-physical save for some... obvious places
ESTUS FLASK
The Undead treasure these dull green flasks. Fill with Estus at bonfire. Fills HP. The Estus Flasks are linked to the Fire Keepers. The Dark Tales also make reference: An emerald flask, from the Keeper's soul She lives to protect the flame, And dies to protect it further.
^ Lautrec kills Anastacia and takes her soul, and his next destination past that point is Anor Londo, but specifically the hall that leads to "Gwynevere's" chamber! He made Fina's love his whole guidance, Estus Flask is a symbol of Fina in Dark Souls 2 menu, Estus Flask is made of a Soul of a Fire Keeper, Gwynevere seems to be very much connected with love and healing too, and he goes to where "she" is! I would not put it past him that "Gwynevere" messed up his radar, he seems to act irrational in his delusion about being "loved by Fina", but you can see everything about this questline is thematically connected! ...there is also the fact that if Lautrec's armor is of any indication, Fina was wearing a crown! Gwyn was the king, so another one crowned would be his wife, right?
I think whereas Gwynevere didn't inherit Fina's (presumed) golden body and turned out a regular humanoid deity, the orange glint of her eyes might also be Fina's gene, a color of healing (the liquid in Estus Flask)! Gwyn's eye color might actually be grey and only show in her eyes vaguely! (This is a surprise tool that will help us later). Brown hair might belong to either Fina, or to Gwyn when he was way younger! Or.. to Gwyn's parent? Put a pin on this! All in all it is hard to say whether orange in Gwynevere refers to Fina/Nehma and her healing, or the setting sun place in the family. Though.. to think of it, Fromsoft often has melting pot of different references and hints! It can always be several things at once!
Rosaria, Anri and Horace
I think Rosaria's line is the furthest diluted from the divine ancestry, since having children with a human resulted in JUST humans, not sort of Demigods! Also, Irithyllian preset does say these humans have "features of old gods"!
(Video by Bonfire VN ( x ))
Unfortunately, Rosaria doesn't have eye texture! Grey skin looks cool, but oh well. I suppose it is more fair to take the look from the final version, which is just normal, if only slightly less saturated!
Her hair appears to be not black but actually just dark grey, like Filianore's, however, Anri, Horace and average Irithyllian appear to have black hair!
(From this ( x ) page, without Hollowing filter)
dggsdfsfd Yeah I know, most of Dark Souls 3 face data is just bald, and their hair color data is just black, but! I think it is kind of "legit" since you can see their eyebrows, that are black too! Sorry for a cursed joke about Artorias though, he does have black hair and I just thought it was a funny idea that he did sleep with Gwynevere at some point- look, Gods were wery proud of his accomplishments against the Abyss and even gave him that medal ok? fsjjfd xD
Why Anri's Hollowing is "regular" and Horace's is green-ish that was introduced in Drangleic is another topic tbh. But, I think that Anri takes more after Rosaria, whereas Horace takes more after Aldrich! Anri's grey eyes are from Rosaria, and I think Aldrich would have blue eyes like Horace's! look it is thematically appropriate right?
I am sure that they ARE the two children that managed to escape Aldrich, of course:
EXECUTIONER HELM (DS3)
(...) Horace is one of only two children to escape Aldrich's clutches.
Japanese specifies he is one of children of Aldrich specifically:
ホレイスはエルドリッチの子供たちの一人であり 唯二人の生き残りでもあった
ANRI'S DIALOGUE
(...) "Help me vanquish Aldrich, the man-eating fiend."
(...) "But my duty must be done, even alone. As an unkindled Lordseeker. For the children I knew, bless their souls."
(...) "Horace, we've done it, we really have..."
(...) "Oh, Horace, everyone, forgive me..."
(...) "Oh, Horace, why... Don't leave me, not you... Not like the others..."
Notice how Anri is close with Horace, they're taking revenge upon Aldrich together (and we know why Horace does it), and the way they talk about their past like they've lost many people (children?) but only Horace stayed. Anri also goes back to the Church of the Deep after their quest is over, and goes Hollow there. It makes much more sense if Anri is also personally involved into this quest! They are easily the mysterious second child who survived, under Occam's Razor it goes!
+Just in case, don't let "of Astora" fool you; Anri is LARPING as a knight of Astora because their legends gave them sense of nostalgia! You know that feeling when you are way too late for something and long for having been a part of it while it was still relevant? Or wanting to meet a person you've learned all about only long after they died?
ELITE KNIGHT SET (DS3)
[item] said to have been given to elite knights of fallen Astora. The mere mention of Astora invokes wistful pangs, and perhaps it was such a dream that drew Anri to this faraway home known only by name.
Also an idea: maybe Anri's gender thing should be taken at a face value? Although basically just a human at this rate, they are still a kid of a mother of rebirth, so maybe they legitimately can have either biological gender for the purpose of being able to have children with any person? Just an ability inherited from Rosaria, because this is what Rosaria's power is about! What do you think?
Flann and Dancer of the Boreal Valley
Flann was a God of Fire, and Dancer is stated to be a direct descendant in the royal line!
RING OF THE SUN PRINCESS (DS1)
This ring is granted to those who enter a Covenant with Gwynevere, daughter of Lord Gwyn and the Princess of Sunlight. This slightly warm ring boosts the synergy of miracles. The Princess of Sunlight Gwynevere left Anor Londo along many other deities, and later became wife to Flame God Flann.
SUN PRINCESS RING (DS3)
(...) Gwynevere left her home with a great many other deities, and became a wife and a mother, raising several heavenly children.
I think that the place the Gods of Anor Londo left to was Heide in Drangleic, and even there we arrive long past its ruin! Not certain where they are now and how many generations of these children appeared, but at least some direct children or even descendants returned into Lordran continent! Aldia, Creighton and Gilligan travelled from Drangleic to Lordran continent, so why not some of these relatives too? (Considering how oddly nobody in Drangleic knows shit about Lordran continent despite it being literally there oversees, I take it as it got concealed for undefined time, and maybe these descendants of Gwynevere, along with some other Gods, opened the path back to it?)
SOUL OF THE DANCER
Soul of the dancer. One of the twisted souls, steeped in strength. Use to acquire many souls, or transpose to extract its true strength. The Pontiff Sulyvahn bestowed a double-slashing sword upon a distant daughter of the formal royal family, ordering her to serve first as a dancer, and then as an outrider knight, the equivalent to exile.
(In Japanese, 旧王家の末裔 - 'descendant of the Old Royal Family')
DANCER'S CROWN
Crown worn by the Dancer of the Boreal Valley. The mirage-like aurora veil is said to be an article of the old gods, permitted only for direct descendants of the old royal family.
Dancer can conjure fire in her hands, which the Pontiff and Fire Witches who use the Profaned Flame can't do, which might imply hers is all natural, and does this smoke-like thing when using her dark magic sword (which is, again, unlike the Pontiff's actual arsenal with HIS dark magic sword). Considering Flann is God of Flame, her capacity for using fire and ash "naturally" convinced me that she descends from Gwynevere and him!
Unfortunately, nothing to latch onto considering her or Flann's appearance, really.. But I'd suggest that if she takes his abilities more than Gwynevere's, whatever you imagine Flann looking like, she'd look more like him as well!
Queen of Lothric, Lothric, Lorian, Oceiros and Ocelotte
Well, first things first: I do not think Queen of Lothric IS Gwynevere! There are no damning evidences for this!
For one, Gwynevere's name is not forgotten or obscured by the events of Dark Souls 3, it is mentioned in descriptions and by Yorshka, so why would it be omitted under just 'Queen of Lothric'! Second, Gwynevere is still referred to as a princess consistently, she never queened-up! The only exception from this is illusion of Gwynevere calling herself a queen, and... well, it was needed, to support the legend. :p Third, Rosaria is also linked to items associated with Gwynevere, same as Queen of Lothric, so this is just descent, really!
But what truly cemented my opinion is that in Japanese script, Queen of Lothric is said to be compared with 'the' Goddess of Bounty and Grace! (Taken from this ( x ) document by Last Protagonist, it is for Bloodborne but it has a Dark Souls WIP folder). Why would Gwynevere be compared with herself? :p
(Upper image of the ribbon in statue by Lokey's Lore ( x )) The ribbons seem to miss in the concept art, but I feel like they got added to further hint at descent rather than to... well, add a plot hole...? x) Miyazaki initially wanted Gwynevere to have motherly vibe and the design we have now only exists because the guy who drew that concept liked it too much, so maybe his initial idea for her got a second chance in another character?
Like I said, the grey in the eyes WAS important, because, look! The brothers' eyes ARE grey! :p Their hair is actually very grey as well; with a very slight hint of blond for Lothric and slight hint of brown for Lorian, but you can tell game's lighting makes their hair look way more saturated than they actually are! Lothric's eyes are also blind of course, you can more clearly see from the texture that the pupil is ruined..
Notice that Oceiros is also lacking scales, but is growing fungi-like things that are otherwise found in Vagrants!
UPDATE 02/01/2025: Ocelotte's model is a cut content, but apparently the model does persist in finished game still, even if we cannot see it!
(From this ( x ) video)
In Dark Souls 2, essence of Seath lives on same as Gwyn's, Izalith's and Nito's but in a form of nearly an "element", and corrupts the Duke of Tseldora into madness, driving him to indulge in mad experiments and create weird beings! It is possible that this happens again in Dark Souls 3 when now the vessel of "Seath" becomes Oceiros instead and similar descent into madness repeats! Very ironically, Seath DID reach immortality if you think of it, but he no longer realises that he did fhdfhds As for Vagrants, I wonder whether it was intentional too, since Seath did experiment with marine life forms quite a lot (Pisacas, Giant Clams)...?
I think the grey eyes and hair is linked to Queen of Lothric; the orange hues must have weakened over generations, and it is not the last of grey hair you'll see x) Really have no idea what Oceiros would've passed onto them, though...? I imagine brown-ish hair from the side of Queen of Lothric reflecting Gwynevere's brown hair (passed in an even greyer form to Lorian), and blond hair from the side of Oceiros (passed in an even greyer form to Lothric)!
Gundyr, Gertrude and their parents
GUNDYR'S HELM
Ancient helm of a set of cast iron armor, belonging to Champion Gundyr. Modeled after a former king. Gundyr, or the Belated Champion, was bested by an unknown warrior. He then became sheath to a coiled sword in the hopes that someday, the first flame would be linked once more.
古い王 - king from long ago, king from the past, etc
Gundyr doesn't appear to be one of Oceiros' children, but I've been thinking about it for a while.. I figured out what made the most sense for his story is being a collateral relative to the twin princes, considering he was sent out to replace Lothric (well, this is what he was told..) It will be a tangent to explain, so here ( x ) are my conclusions on what exactly happened with Gundyr!
Granted, I might end up making him more of a distant relation than her direct son from previous marriage- it'd be even better, to be honest! But, this is a base draft of the family tree. His helmet resembles his ancestor, that, again, would work better as someone several generations apart from him!
UPD 12/30/2024: I did decide it made more sence if "ancient king" was... well, ancient fdgfdsd And appeared to be ancestry of Oceiros instead, with Gundyr being collaterally related to Oceiros! I am not strong with familial terms so I am not sure what this relation is called now if I move him further than being half-brothers with the twins and Ocelotte :o Just thought it worked better!
BOUNTIFUL LIGHT
Miracle taught to knights of Gertrude, holy maiden to the Queen. Gradually restores a large amount of HP. The Heavenly Daughter is said to be the Queen's child.
DIVINE PILLARS OF LIGHT
Miracle of Gertrude, the Heavenly Daughter. Brings down multiple pillars of light in the vicinity. The Queen's holy maiden Gertrude was visited by an angel, who revealed this tale to her.(...)
The fact that her own daughter is simultaneously described as her servant of sorts gave me an impression of being the bastard child! I guess one thing Gwynevere certainly passes down to her descendants is sleeping around, except this is ACTUALLY Fina's fault hdhfshfgsdh
Seath, Gwyndolin, Filianore and Priscilla. How Caitha could fit into a family?
I think this is apparent that Gwyndolin is a child between Gwyn and Seath, as serpents in this lore are "imperfect dragons", and Seath himself is inherently connected to Moonlight element (Moonlight Butterflies he created, Moonlight Greatword being literally made from a part of his body)!
COVETOUS GOLD SERPENT RING
The serpent is an imperfect dragon and symbol of the Undead. Its habit of devouring prey even larger than itself has led to an association with gluttony. This gold ring, engraved with the serpent, boosts its wearer's item discovery, so that more items can be amassed.
MOONLIGHT GREATSWORD
This sword, one of the rare dragon weapons, came from the tail of Seath the Scaleless, the pale white dragon who betrayed his own. Seath is the grandfather of sorcery, and this sword is imbued with his magic, which shall be unleashed as a wave of moonlight.
And, yes, needless to mention that Gwyndolin is a sorcerer. Sorcery is THE Seath's thing!
I would actually take Aldrich's render with a grain of salt; right, we don't know what Gwyndolin's eyes were like in Dark Souls 1, but also Gwyndolin has white/greyish skin, when Aldrich using this body has a pretty much human skin tone! The hair on Aldrich also appears to be way more white (a trait of being corrupted by Dark, check Four Kings or Abyss Watchers), not grey like Gwyndolin's 🤔 I guess his look is more of an approximation than literally just using Gwyndolin's body! Though, pale eye color can still be used as a headcanon! Just maybe less dead looking..?
UPDATE 02/01/2025: I've been thinking about inconsistency of Gwyndolin's design a bit more, and here ( x ) is a separate post compiling those! (don't worry it IS actually short!) The gist of it is that white skin and even the snakes might even be a result of prolonged exposure to estrogen Moonlight Aura, so his parenting is up to more intepretation than I initially assumed! My interpretation lingers on the idea that relation between Gwyndolin, Priscilla and Yorshka is a biological one, not spiritual or adopted! Yet even then, who can tell if white skin (and snakes, and boobies) is NOT a trait that will just "wear out" without contstant nourishment by Moonlight aura? Aldrich's version of Gwyndolin's body honestly opens more questions than it answers, but I say remarkably grey hair of Gwyndolin IS his natural hair color and Aldrich's body's white hair is an alteration! I am bouncing off of these pointers.
Filianore also has this grey hair with a very slight hint of brown! Her eyes also appear to be corrupted by sort of wooden texture, and after time runs wild, she honestly reminds me of what Elana looks like...? Turning into wood is a common sign of devolution in this setting as everything that isn't a Dragon evolved from the trees! But... furthermore, devolution into wood is connected with darkness.
It is Humanity when it is not running wild! Four Kings becoming very tree-like is the quickest example! The void-face type of Giants also turn into trees upon devolving and, interestingly enough, their particular souls have a spot of darkness within! Further clue towards Filianore having some Dark in her by nature is the very fact that she was sent away with Pygmy lords! Would not a God that actually has some Dark/Humanity in them be THE best candidate to keep them in check.... and the one most likely to remain safe there in Gwyn's eyes, you know?
Priscilla has a little scales and eyes, unlike Seath, despite being most likely his child! Seath being white-colored is accentuated, and so is her being "stark-white" crossbreed!
SOUL OF PRISCILLA
(...) Use the soul of this crossbreed bastard child and antithesis to all life to acquire a huge amount of souls, or to create a unique weapon.
LIFEHUNT SCYTHE
Scythe born from the soul of Priscilla, the stark white crossbreed trapped inside the Painted World of Ariamis. Even the Gods feared Priscilla's lifehunt ability, and in the hands of a mortal, its power will turn upon its wielder.
I think Priscilla and Yorshka have to have a shared second parent, since you can get a miracle version of Priscilla's Lifehunt Scythe when Aldrich dreams of Yorshka! At the same time, Gwyndolin is the lastborn of Gwyn yet Yorshka is their younger sister, nor Priscilla or Yorshka are recognised as Gods by the narrative! Basically.. Gwyn got cucked dfggffd I keep telling you all and you don't believe me!!
Okay, but what connects Priscilla to Darkness is definitely not from Seath's ancestry, as Dragons are beyond Light or Dark! I absolutely agree with the idea that Priscilla and Velka were connected; Velka's crow people and some clerics are in the Painted World of Ariamis, Occult Ember is here, Priscilla's Dagger has Occult affinity, in Dark Souls 3 the Crows worship Priscilla, there is a statue of mother holding a child... But, I think Velka rather adopted her than was her biological mother! Another thing is that Velka is a "heretical" deity, implying she made Darkness her own weapon rather than was naturally aligned with it or corrupted by it to the core! What Priscilla inherited though, had to be inherited directly, biologically, naturally and not learned, since her "ability" manifested since infancy:
PECULIAR DOLL
A strange doll in strange dress. There once was an abomination who had no place in this world. She clutched this doll tightly, and eventually was drawn into a cold and lonely painted world.
The Daughters of the Dark in Dark Souls 2 are fragments of Manus' own darkness, and their elements naturally oppose everything about Gods and their world! Nashandra's element is Death and Alsanna's element is Ice/Cold, both opposing Life and Fire respectively! Elana is the devolution into a tree life form, whereas Nadalia is ash - both oppose the concept of time as Age of Fire created it! Elana by devolution, Nadalia by exhaustion as ash is final result of burning, when nothing IS left to burn! And in every game, death more blatantly goes hand in hand with the darkness, too.
Priscilla embodies two of these: Ice and Death! She is even connected with invisibility, too! At the same time, since Gwyndolin's hair is AKTYALY grey, Yorshka's hair is brown and Shira's hair is brown also and was white only in the concept, her white hair might also be result of the Dark settling within, not same as her white fur!
As for who IS that mysterious parent that passed the 'Darkness gene' to Filianore, Priscilla and Yorshka...? Okay, here I will slide a theory about how Caitha of all people fits the role well ( x ) compiled very well by @val-of-the-north, if you want to read! It is too hard to just put all that here and deserves a separate post, as there are many clues towards this theory but.. let's say this takes more than five minutes to explain. It is her connection with Death that is here for Priscilla and Yorshka (since in DS3, Priscilla is not really "young" nor "in hiding"), Aldrich literally using exact copy of Nito's Blade, Church of the Deep formerly being Caitha's chapel and taken from her, Caitha being connected with the Dark without a doubt, Filianore's egg being too much like Vagrant's shell to be ignored, Nito's wife being hinted as water goddess, Vagrants being marine creatures, Seath himself being interested in researching weird marine creatures (that might even work as reason to work with Caitha a lot even before his insanity arc), Caitha's tears crystallizing when it is otherwise an effect of draconic curses (wear protection when you fuck a dragon, kids fsfds)....
Look it's a lot and. It fits into a separate post better. I really liked it and honestly think it fits within lore! Besides, Gwyn sure likes to flirt with the danger, as scared as he is. 🙄 He was enemy of the dragons but let Seath close and kept Midir alive, he feared humans but still trusted Four Kings... would not put it past him to look at someone aligned with the Darkness and go "I should not put my dick in it, however," fhsdhff
Shira and Yorshka and... Zandroe?
(Shira's face data from this ( x ) page)
(Shira's set render from this ( x ) page by Tokami Fuko)
Her hair is dark blond, in the final version? Her eyes are also green though, even if not as radiant in color as Priscilla's! Her name literally means 'white', and she is, like I said earlier, is "'daughter of the Duke and descendant of the Gods"! You can also see the original intention for her was white hair! or..... is it grey hair? AGAIN? x)
SHIRA'S CROWN
Crown of Shira, knight in service to Filianore. Finely crafted with silver and fashioned with a pearl from a Man Eater Shell. (...)
SHIRA'S ARMOR
(...) With a spun gold shawl draped over the silver breastplate and a green woven skirt, this armor offers a subdued yet refined elegance, apropos to both a handmaiden of the Princess and one whose veins coarse with royal blood.
I am not sure why she turned out to be so humanoid, not showing draconian features whatsoever! Perhaps how many features manifest is a random chance, and her mom's genes just turned out to be much stronger than Seath's, especially if she was one of the Gods on Gwyn's family! Or maybe whereas Gwyndolin was raised through Moon aura, Shira, on the other hand, had exposure to Sunlight aura? Whereas former possibly enhanches dragonic features, latter would suppress them by an effect? Alternatively, Seath's genes just fade away without constant nourishment, like I said it is possible with Gwyndolin!
This all also makes me wonder if Seath's "intended" eye color is green, and that would be the color if he had eyes?
Now, Zandroe is a very interesting case, and there are quite a few coincidences that make him fit the same check-marks as Shira herself! But first things first; I must clarify that 'Zinder and Zandroe' is a localisation blunder, and a pretty severe one! They straight up invented a whole new guy, when in Japanese original it is ONLY Zandroe (欲の神ザンドロ) (or ONLY Zinder, whatever name you like more)
I explained a bit more about Gods mentioned in Dark Souls 2 and their Japanese names in this ( x ) post! And in the same post, I've clarified that Caffrey is in particular Goddess of Wealth (財産 の 神 ネフ ェ エ), not really so much of a good luck!
In Dark Souls 1, the Covetous Gold Serpent Ring is found is Sen's Fortress, and Covetous Silver Serpent Ring is found in Tomb of the Giants! You can already see the parallels with how we discover items and 'Statue of Goddess' associated with NK/Gwynevere vs Gwyndolin. But there is something else:
COVETOUS GOLD/SILVER SERPENT RING:
The serpent is an imperfect dragon and symbol of the Undead. Its habit of devouring prey even larger than itself has led to an association with gluttony.(...)
Notice how just like Shira, Zandroe also is associated with union of gold and silver, whereas also being connected with the dragons! Not to say that he was necesarily serpentine rather than dragonic; the rings that refer to him might be symbolic! Though he as well might have snakes as a part of his body like it happened with Gwyndolin - a "gene" that manifests only if nourished with enough of Seath's aura! I do imagine he looks a bit more monstrous than his sister Shira, at least.
At the same time, he is associated with greed, when Caffrey is associated with wealth! It all could explain how her, Zandroe, Caffrey and Seath can be connected! Seath is the 'silver' side, and Caffrey is the 'golden' side!
(Images by Moonlight Ruin on Twitter ( x ))
I think Yorshka has her mother's eyes, as they do not have draconian narrow pupil! (Well, if it was Caitha, she very likely has blue eye and red eye, and this is just the blue!)
Seath is not only white, but also cyan/blue/purple/pink, and Yorshka displays these features! As well as taking after the mysterious parent with the 'Dark genetics', specifically with the ability manifesting as Death / Lifehunt shared with Priscilla:
LIFEHUNT SCYTHE (DS3)
Miracle of Aldrich, Devourer of Gods. Steals HP of foes using an illusory scythe. Aldrich dreamt as he slowly devoured the God of the Darkmoon. In this dream, he perceived the form of a young, pale girl in hiding.
All things considered, I feel like brown and dark blond hair gene comes from somewhere in Gwyn's family! However, the grey hair gene apparently suppresses it on every occasion! There is also a possibility that both Yorshka and Shira were born with white hair and either 1) this gene is weak and wears out on itself over time 2) this gene is connected with Seath's moonlight energy and wears out without nourishment or 3) white hair reacts on moonlight in general and is now darker color because moon is darker!
Dunnel and Painter
I just think Dunnel is a likely candidate for whoever was father of the Painter:
PYROMANCER'S PARTING FLAME
The pyromancy flame of Livid Pyromancer Dunnel that attracts the echoes of the death. When Dunnel lost his hideous spouse, he gave his own pyromancy flame as an offering, which transformed into a parting flame. Not long after, Dunnel became a mad spirit, cursed to wander the lands.
Priscilla is referred to as an abomination within the lore, and hideous spouse is not quite far off! It clearly refers to the context of what life itself fears rather than... well, like, her actual appearance. And Priscilla is connected with Death, whereas combining his flame with her changed it into something connected with Death as well! He also invades in a place that looks a lot like her arena in Dark Souls 1!
Bro just looks like old Patches -_-
(Video by BonfireVN ( x ))
Her skin is definitely more grey and dragon-ish, but I am not sure to which family member I could link orange eye color to :') Just the fact that she is meant to envision the Flame, I guess?
_________________________
Okay, thank you for giving me a reason to organise all this! I thought I'd just dump some references together, but it turned out to be sort of an analysis, and I figured some useful things for myself too! So, my conclusions are:
Grey hair gene is very real in the family but will depend on how far they stray from "daylight"! Gwyndolin's hair is also grey, and Aldrich's version having white hair is reasonable since Darkness corruption seems to cause white hair!
Brown hair gene most likely appears from Gwyn's mother, or other relative of his
Descendants of Gwynevere tend to have grey hair and grey eyes, seems like the brightness of sunlight have worn out over time genetically in this family. Since Gwynevere is the setting sun and thus already shown hints of grey herself, her children were destined to lean even further into the 'night' because of how daytimes work! Unless, of course, Flann's heritage gets more dominant x)
Dancer is the only known 'apparent' descendant of Gwynevere and Flann, others appear to be either much more diluted or not having ties to Flann at all
There is a 'Darkness gene' running in the family in Filianore, Priscilla and Yorshka that manifests in different forms like it was with Daughters of Dark (ice and death with Priscilla, death with Yorshka, defiance of time with trees/ash with Filianore). At the same time, with Caitha, a gene connected with the waters manifests from time to time when Filianore's Egg resembles the shell of Vagrants and Yorshka has "tentacles" similar to a marine creature on her long neck! also her tears crystallise because Seath gave her weird dragonic STD lmao
Mixing with a dragon genetically has very random results, from apparent to absolutely indiscernable
Someone GOT to inherit Gwyn's super square jaw shape at some point XD
Seath's "intended" eye color is most likely green, so it is one of the variants for what Gwyndolin's eye color might be!
Oceiros probably was blond
While Gwyndolin was hard-pressed on the 'moon' side of his genetics despite also being a child of Moon and Sun, with Shira the sun part is almost all there is, and with Zandroe it seems to be evenly presented
Pattern with which hair colors of Gwyn's children change suggest that Nameless King's real hair color was not white, he's just been through some shit!

Behold, a diagram going over HP, Food, and Shit lore in Undertale/Deltarune.

Each column shows a different question, each row shows a category, ranging from the broad (Everyone in the UNDERTALE Universe) to the specific (Lightner Humans in the DELTARUNE universe) Green means that it's true, Red means that its false, Orange means that its uncertain, Blue means no data, Purple means that the answer depends (the group is too broad)
So, for instance, the first question is Instant Heal- Does food in this category instantly heal you? In undertale, it depends on the food type. Human food is a maybe (If we assume the astronaut food is human food, that instantly heals you, but otherwise it's uncertain and kind of implied human food wouldn't?), but Monster Food is a "yes" (because of the snowdin grillbys dialog about food) In the Light World, food doesn't heal you at all (The hot chocolate item doesn't have a heal value, even though the bandage does!), but in the Dark World, it does. And darkner food would be dark world food, meaning it does. THE QUESTIONS: Instant Heal - Does this category's food instantly heal you? Shit Lore - Does this species shit? Do they use the bathroom? Yes this is the depths theorists go sometimes Can Hurt - Can this category's food hurt you to consume it? Physical Heal - Can this category's items heal you by physically healing you? (Ex: a bandage is not consumed, but it still functions as a healing item?) Overheal - Can you acquire HP Overheal? Magic Heal - Can you recover HP with magic? Increases (Dist) - Does HP increase as you distance yourself from your actions? Known Thing - Does this group know about HP as a statistic? 0 = Death - Does running out of HP equate to death? This graph isn't perfect, but I'm too lazy to fix it since I made this like a year or two ago.
#deltarune#deltarune theory#deltarune lore#this is real lore done by real theorists#this isnt a shitpost#i mean it kind of is#techincally#but this is also a serious diagram#you would be surprised how often this comes up in discussion#this is what us lore nerds do#huh#utdr#deltarune chapter 1#deltarune chapter 2#undertale

Rose Salt - Just a dehydrated, fraudly Ptilopsis?
Rose Salt is a newly-debuted Multi-target Medic and is the welfare operator for Exodus From The Pale Sea.
She has some unique aspects to her kit, but also shares an obvious similarity with Ptilopsis, easily the best of her Branch without contest.
I don't have my finger on the pulse of the times, but I know how easily 5 star operators fall through the net Especially ones with such an obvious point of comparison, so in this post I will lay out Rose Salt's good qualities and more.
This is a very long and dense post. There's math. I talk about fractions. There's a single image that just contains more numbers. There is an instance of footnotes being used. No graphs though, you're safe from those here.
As a reminer as to what Ptilopsis does:
Her talent grants +0.3 SP/s to every operator as long as she’s deployed, 0.35 for operators in her range if she has her level 3 module. There are other SP Auras, like Mostima’s or Suzuran’s for Casters and Supporters respectively, which are +0.4 at base, so Ptilopsis’ indiscriminate aura is incredibly potent and always makes a noticeable difference.
Her S1 is a generic ATK Up type deal that isn’t worth mentioning and her S2 is the famous Enkephalin that extends her range an extra tile forward, making it equal to Medic Medics. This effect disregards the extra tile given by her module.
It also reduces her attack interval by a ton, changing it from the Medic-approved, rather lousy 2.85s to 0.95s at Rank 7 to M2 and to 0.75s at M3. The former presents an increase of 200% to her healing output, tripling it, and the latter one of 280%, almost quadrupling it. This is also done in a way that’s much preferred over just increasing the healing per attack. By performing base-value heals at such a rapid pace, it’s much harder for operators to die in between heals and as long as her hps is higher than the incoming dps, nobody around her will die unless they get oneshot. It needs 100 SP at all levels, starts with 75 at Rank 7, 85 at M3 and has a duration of 36s at Rank 7 and 40s at M3.
I never even gave her any Mastery points in this skill, as the Rank 7 version has yet to fail me. I wouldn’t even recommend mastering it, because there is such a thing as too much healing. You really don’t need it.
And that’s all that our good Joyce does. She gives SP and makes you not die and looks very pretty while doing so.
So here’s Rose Salt’s deal:
Her talent gives her -5% ATK (yes minus) and allies within her range receive 17% more healing, 22% with her module.
One might look at this and find it quirky, because ultimately it puts her at 111% healing output (116% with module) while also improving other sources of healing, but it’s actually pretty neat. More on this later, we’re still in the presentation stage, not the evaluation stage.
Her S1 is a burst healing skill that stores up to 2 charges and increases her next healing output by a bunch. It’s nice when the incoming damage is of a more sporadic nature, but nothing too noteworthy.
S2 is where it gets interesting and what invites the comparison to Joyce:
It reduces her attack interval by quite a bit and 30% (at Rank7) to 50% of Physical and Arts damage (at M3) taken by operators in her range is instead dealt as HP loss over 5 seconds.
It takes 40 SP at Rank 7 and 36 at M3, starts with 21 or 27 and always has a duration of 27 seconds.
The attack interval reduction brings her from 2.85s to 1.5s, which is just short of doubling her healing output (90% increase).
Her module type is the same as Ptilopsis (RIN-X), giving her an extra tile of range which for her is really handy.
So is this worth it? What does she even really do?
Before I answer these questions, I will make a detour to Perfumer.
Perfumer is, similar to Joyce, an old standby. She’s a very strong operator that I recommend raising. She has high healing output and is easy to use with her global regeneration passive. Here, I want to focus on her S2 which uniquely gives her -50 ASPD as a penalty to offset the massive +250% ATK. This makes her heal only every 5.7s which is frankly atrocious and gives her only an effective +75% healing output even with such a massive ATK boost.(I know this doesn’t feel right, but the ASPD penalty really is that bad for her direct healing.) However, for her this is totally fine because the point is that it amplifies the healing of her talent by a ton! It’s neat design. She’s also the only operator to inflict an ASPD penalty on herself. With everyone else when they want to make them slower, they instead increase their attack interval. The difference here is that attack interval and ASPD both affect the speed at which the operator acts, but are separate stats. If an operator with a 1 second attack interval activates a skill that doubles their attack interval, they’ll attack every 2 seconds. If they suffer -50 ASPD, they’ll also attack every 2 seconds. The difference is that the only thing that can change an operator’s attack interval, is the operator themselves. Outside sources will always only mess with ASPD. Be that enemies that reduce it or allies that increase it. ASPD functions on a base of 100, which is the default for all operators. You take their attack interval and multiply it by 100 divided by their current ASPD, which then of course changes nothing with ASPD at the base 100. To double their attack speed, you need +100 ASPD, to halve it you need -50. As such, the more ASPD you have, the less impactful further increases become. The first +100 ASPD double your attack speed, but the next +100 only increase it by 50% To take the 1s attack interval operator as an example: With +100 ASDP it’s 1*(100/200) = 0.5 (lower number is good here - that’s how many seconds it takes them to attack. You can convert this into attacks per second by reading it as a fraction, giving you 1/2 and then inverting it (or potentiating it with -1. I think the fraction method is easier to rationalize, but it’s the same thing.)) With +200 ASPD it’s 1*(100/300) = 0.33(repeating), which is 50% faster than 0.5. In Attacks Per Second instead of Seconds Per Attack the relation becomes more easy to see: at 200 ASPD they make 2 attacks per second, at 300 ASPD they make 3 attacks per second. The former is twice as much as the base amount of 1, but the latter is only 50% more than the increased 2 per second.
This also means that the less ASPD you have, the more impactful further reductions become.
If you have -10 ASPD, you attack 10% slower. Instead of 1 attack per second, you make 0.9. If you have -20, it’s 0.8 - which is 11.1% less than 0.9 so the same -10 ASPD again on top of the ones you were already suffering from are now having a magnified effect. So with Perfumer sitting at 50 ASPD (reduced by 50 from the base value of 100), if she were to suffer any further reductions this would impact her much more than other operators. Say there’s a Cold Alter that you just find yourself having deployed both Perfumer and Ptilopsis next to. You have Perfumer’s S2 active and they both get struck by the Cold, suffering a -30 ASPD debuff. This puts Ptilopsis at 70 ASPD, making her attack every 4.07s, which makes her attack 42% slower than usual. Perfumer gets put to 20 ASPD (which is actually the ASPD floor, you can’t go lower than this), making her attack every 14.25 seconds, which makes her attack 400% lower than usual, 150% slower than compared to her already reduced attack speed. By being at 50 ASPD, simply taking another -30 ASPD she attacks 3 times slower than someone who takes -30 ASPD at the base 100. You can use this to your advantage by stacking ASPD debuffs on enemies, but that’s a secret. So what’s the point here? Would it be better for her if instead her skill doubled her attack interval? Well in this situation, certainly. If it did that, she’d still be attacking every 8.14 seconds while Colded. But you don’t usually face enemies that debuff your ASPD, so instead I will call the way her skill functions a benefit. Let’s say you have Silence on field. She gives +12 ASPD to all Medics. There’s no more Cold, we’re all cozy now. Ptilopsis now has 112 ASPD, so she attacks 0.35*(112/100) = 0.39 times per second. This is a 12% increase in output. Perfumer now has 62 ASPD, so she attacks every 0.25*(62/100) = 0.22 times per second.
Compared to her previous 0.175 attacks per second, this is a 24% increase in output.
As you can see, by being at a lower ASPD she also gets higher benefits from having her ASPD increased. Basically she only needs 50 extra ASPD to double her attack speed, whereas everyone else needs 100. So now back to Rose Salt: Due to her talent, she’s always at 95% ATK, so any +ATK she gets from elsewhere will have a greater effect on her. If you have Aak shoot her with S3 (assuming she survives), she will now be at 145%, which is 52.6% more ATK than she had before, whereas every other operator will be at 150% over 100%, which is only 50% more. So the ATK reduction of her talent is actually a good thing and also the reason they didn’t give any +ATK to any of her skills, because they’d all be slightly better than what’s written. Can’t have her get out of hand.
But in the end you might say that this is piddlyshit. It’ll never matter because the difference is so miniscule, it’s just 95% compared to how Lena dumpsters her ASPD. Correct. But it’s about the principle. We now have 2 operators who do this kind of thing, so I’m hoping we get to see this more. Maybe we’ll have an attacking operator who gives themselves -80% ATK on a skill that greatly increases the rate at which they fire, so that just by themselves they already have a positive effect from the skill but due to the ATK reduction (as opposed to having a negative damage multiplier, which is how this is usually done) they’re incredibly receptive to being supported! So in a vacuum, the skill could look very mediocre, but give them an Aak or Warfarin buff and they suddenly go nuts just by being brought back to a normal amount of ATK. (In this example by the way, Aak would put them at 70% total ATK, giving an effective +250% ATK. (assume they survive)).
But that’s not even what we were here for, we were comparing Rose Salt to Ptilopsis and this didn’t do anything for that.
So here are some more numbers:
As you can see, her off-skill healing is actually better than Ptilopsis’, while her on-skill is a fair bit worse. Not visible in the image but mentioned earlier is the uptime: Ptilopsis' S2 takes 100 SP and lasts 36 to 40 seconds and while the first use is fairly quick with 75 to 85 initial SP, it takes a long time to use it again. So long that you'll probably only use it once. Rose Salt's is much less restrictive with its 40 to 36 SP cost and 27s duration. This is a huge upside. You can also see how much Ptilopsis’ M3 actually increases her healing - it’s like another third more again. Monstrous. However! Rose Salt also makes it so that all damage taken is halved, with the negated half trickling in as damage over time. This means that to get oneshot, an operator would need to take more than twice their health in damage in a single hit. In a world of ever increasing dangers, this is an invaluable effect to give. It also synergizes with certain operators like Saria and Quercus who can grant SP to operators they heal. The Quercus + Gavialter S3 synergy is known and now you can do this with anyone.
But even beyond that, Rose Salt is a Medic that’s uniquely synergistic with self-healing and Medic-immune operators, as their own healing also gets increased by her talent. Reapers and Musha Guards will have their on-hit heals improved, Mudrock’s shieldbreaks give her more, anything really. The damage over time conversion also works on medic immune operators. These are the qualities she brings over Ptilopsis raw healing and SP aura. Neither is better than the other. Generally speaking, Ptilopsis massive healing output will keep your operators alive and her SP Aura is pretty much the best generalistic support talent in the entire game, but don’t count Rose Salt out. She's an excellent Medic and very worth raising, even if you already have Ptilopsis and especially if you don't. I don't say this lightly, because it takes a lot for me to actually use a Medic, especially one who's "competing" with Ptilopsis. Ptilopsis is in my top three used Medics because her SP Aura makes her so much more than just a Medic. I just use defensive Supports and self-sufficient operators until the game twists my wrist so much that I give in.

Round 11, Day 1 - Team Alter-Ego
"And then there were five. So, who's next? I'm sure the others are all shaken at the idea of Servants actually dying. The horror of it all. Best to keep up the momentum, no?"
SERVANT DETAILS
HP: 3/3
Team Alter-Ego has all 1 Command Spell remaining!
Servant Skills:
Melt Virus (EX Rank) - When engaged in a Free-for-All, inflict all foes with a -3% demerit. If Meltryllis gains 1st place in the Free-for-All by a margin of 10% or more, inflict a -3% demerit to your foes for their next round and gain a +3% boost for your next combat round.
Crime Ballet (A Rank) - When engaged in a one-on-one, increase the Alter-Ego Class Trait one-on-one boost to +5% rather than +3% (+6% if targeting a Servant that's Playing Defensively).
Saint Graph Expansion (B Rank): When engaged in a Free-for-All, gain a +2% boost. Additionally, if Alter-Ego finds herself in a tie against an opponent in a one-on-one (according to the final results, including boosts), her opponent takes a wound and a -2% demerit while she fully escapes damage and gains a +2% bonus for the next round.
Class-Trait:
ALTEREGO-CLASS Servants fight at their best when given a specific target. When engaged in a standard one-on-one confrontation, they gain a +3% boost. If attacking a Servant 'Playing Defensively', they gain a +4% boost instead.
PRETENDER-CLASS Servants possess an inherent trickster nature. If they fall in last place during a Free-for-All, if there is a gap of 3% within their final score and that of the Servant in 2nd place, they can evade taking a wound. Additionally, if they're victorious against other Servants, other teams cannot attempt to study the Pretender in order to gain a percentage bonus against them.

TWST Cards: Who's the strongest and weakest first year? (Nov 2024)
Lets not talk about the lore for a bit, I'm gonna go on a tangent on the states of the cards because why not. I don't see anyone else doing it.
For the record I'm gonna calculate the minimum level and the maximum level separately and I'll put the ranks of all the characters in different categories based on the states.
Is this necessary?
No.
Unless it makes people build better teams (especially with book 6 bc good fuck why is this so hard)
Also I will do the same thing with the second and third years, and I won't involve the special SSR cards with Crewel, Crowley, Rollo, Fellow and Gidel and Grim.
If you need a refresher on the types of cards in the game, we have three types which are pretty easy to remember: - Attack = Higher power states - Defence = Higher HP states - Balanced = Around similar numbers for power and HP
So here is the graph I did on how many types each of the first years have concerning their SSR cards.
Weirdly looking at this, the card types are quite in character in my opinion. Seeing that Sebek is a more offensive character compared to the others. Jack and Ace have more balanced cards which I think says how these two handle magic. All the while Deuce and Epel have the most defensive cards which I headcanon that Trey and Cater and Vil helped the two with their magic.
By the way I really did look at all the states of all of the first year's SSR cards cause I'M HERE TO TELL YOU WHICH ONES ARE THE BEST OBJECTIVELY FROM THEIR ATTACK AND HEALTH NUMBERS.
Just to prove I did look at all the cards (so far), here's my excel sheet tables!
WHOS GOT THE MOST HEALTH IN EACH CARD KIND HERE? (P.S these are based on the base states at level 1)
Dorm Uniform = Epel Birthday Boy = Ace Birthday Jacket = Jack Birthday Bloom = Jack Platinum Jacket = Ace Unique SSR = Sebek (New Year's Attire) Club Wear = Deuce
WHOS GOT THE MOST ATTACK POWER IN EACH CARD HERE?
Dorm Uniform = Jack Birthday Boy = Deuce Birthday Jacket = Sebek Birthday Bloom = Ace Platinum Jacket = Sebek Unique SSR = Ace (Suitor Suit) and Sebek (Armor of Eternal Night) Club Wear = Ace
By the way I didn't include the new Cozy Lounge cards bc literally only Jamil, Ace, Jack, Trey, Floyd and Jade have gotten the cards so far.
Also the most powerful cards for each character:
Ace = Basketball Jersey Deuce = Rabbit Costume Jack = Dorm Uniform Epel = Applepom Sebek = Platinum Jacket
The cards with the most health for each character:
Ace = Platinum Jacket Deuce = Birthday Bloom Jack = Birthday Bloom Epel = Birthday Jacket Sebek = New Year's Attire
So if anyone was curious about this, then here you go! This was just interesting to me but hey there's still the second and third years to do and I might do the SR cards.

final fantasy 1 progress update #4
finished the game this morning, as promised! im glad i finally played this game. i was totally expecting it to be the rpg equivalent of doing my taxes, but in the end i actually had a ton of fun with it! it's so cool seeing the origin of all of these classic rpg tropes, and the game itself was actually pretty fun! (at least, the psp version was...)
i stated in my first progress update all my thoughts on the party members and their use cases, and as i played i realized that those definitely morph and change over the course of the game. some party members become better, some get worse, etc etc.
if you're confused, here's a GRAPH i made because im the world's biggest fuckin nerd. Raz was useful the whole time, her big damage is always really good. i did find it kind of weird how you can teach the warrior certain spells once you upgrade to the knight, and even though i gave raz all the spells i could, i pretty much never used em until the final boss, where i used nullshock and nullblaze. Lars, as previously stated, absolutely wrecked house in the second half, but he REALLY sucked at first. i didn't get that his gimmick is that you dont give him armor, and he just felt like a worse warrior. however, at some point during the game, he just started dishing out insane amounts of damage, and combining that with both Haste and Temper made him even better. Mia served her role as healer pretty well, though starting out her healing spells were kind of whatever. they got better over time, but by the time she got her better healing spells i was already rolling in an insane amount of gil, and just bought items instead. Protecta and Invis were still really useful for bosses though! i think Jojo was the weirdest of the four in terms of growth, they start out kind of whatever, just casting the basic elemental spells, but once you get those multi target spells, they were my main damage dealer in the midgame. Raz and Lars definitely overtook them in damage at a point though, and while Jojo was still useful for crowd control, i didnt find myself using them for focus fire as much. Temper is always good, at least!
OK so now that i'm done talking about that, let's talk final boss. spoilers ahead in case you ever plan to play ff1, but if you ask me, the story in this game is suuuper light, and doesn't really matter that much. basically, once you reach the final floor of the temple of chaos, you find Garland, the guy you fought at the very beginning of the game. he tells you about a time loop he's been stuck in... i think. i didn't really understand this part, but i did really like that the first guy you fight ends up becoming the final boss, that being Chaos. i think Chaos was the only fight to give me any sort of REAL trouble in the whole game, aside from Warmech, which i didn't even beat. this fight made me realize a couple things, one, reviving party members doesn't even really feel like an option. any revival options (phoenix downs and Mia's Life spell) always revive someone with just one hp, so you have to hope that the enemy doesnt kill them again before you can heal them up. you might think, why not have one party member revive them, then have another heal them in the same turn? i thought of that too, but im pretty sure turn order in this game is randomized. which is. stupid. second realization, the Haste spell is TOTALLY busted. i didn't put it on Mia since i thought it was just a speed boost, but in reality it makes whoever it's cast upon hit more times per attack. this essentially makes it an attack buff, which i didn't realize. i was struggling with the Chaos fight, and on a whim i tried to use the Hermes Boots item on someone, which casts Haste. (yeah, certain equipment when used as an item in battle cast free spells.... this game's weird) moments later, Raz and Lars are dealing thousands of damage, and Chaos goes down in seconds.
one final thing i wanna touch on before wrapping this up: the music! i was not expecting it to be this good!!!! i know im listening to the psp soundtrack, but even then, i love a lot of these songs! the airship theme is pretty bangin, the Sunken Shrine music is super cool, and MAN, the Flying Fortress music struck such a chord with me. that's a keeper for sure.
oh, one more thing i forgot to mention in the last update... im kinda miffed that, in the psp version, they changed the flying fortress from a sort of techno, metallic space station to more of a basic fantasy castle lookin thing. man, the nes look just feels so much more mysterious and adds so much intrigue! like, why is this futuristic space station thing in this old timey fantasy land? who built it, and what happened to them? it also makes warmech feel more inline with the area, and i like warmech a lot!
OK NOW I PLAY FF2 THANK YOU FOR LISTENING TO MY RAMBLINGS

I’ve been thinking about this for a little while — something I’d want to do if I had the time and money would be to design a Motorola 68000-powered tiny (10” or smaller) laptop. Modern CMOS 68K implementations are very power-efficient and decently well-suited to handheld and portable devices (see: TI-92 series), and if combined with a crisp, modern monochrome OLED display, could get you days of continuous usage without needing a recharge! Add a few megabytes of RAM, some peripherals (IDE/CF controller, ISA or S-100 slots, DMA controller, SPI bus, RS-232 port, SD or CF slot, PS/2 port for a mouse, text mode + hires monochrome video card, etc…), and you have a nice, flexible system that can be rarely charged, doesn’t require ventilation, and can be just thick enough to fit the widest port or slot on it.
The main issue would be software support: nearly all existing operating systems that ran on a 68K were either intended for very specific hardware (Classic Mac OS, AmigaOS) or required more than a flat 68000 (NetBSD, Linux, or any other UNIX requiring MMU paging). So, it would probably end up being a custom DOS with some multitasking and priv level capability, or perhaps CP/M-68K (but I don’t know how much software was ever written for that — also, it provides a “bare minimum” hardware abstraction of a text-mode console and disk drive). A custom DOS, with a nice, standard C library capable of running compiled software, would probably be the way to go.
The software question perhaps raises another, harder question: What would I use this for? Programming? Then I’d want a text editor, maybe vi(m) or something like that. OK. Vim just needs termcap/(n)curses or whatever to draw the text, and not much else. That’s doable! You’d just need to provide text-mode VT100 emulation and termcap/curses should “just work” without too much issue. I like writing C, so I’d need a compiler. Now, I’m assuming this simplistic operating system would be entirely written in a combination of assembly language (to talk to hardware and handle specific tasks such as switching processes and privilege management and whatnot) and C (to handle most of the logic and ABI). I could probably cross-compile GCC and be good to go, aside from handling library paths and executable formats that don’t comply with POSIX (I have no intention of making yet another UNIX-like system). Hopefully, most other command-line software (that I actually use) will follow suit without too much trouble. I don’t know how much work it is to get Python or Lua to a new platform (though NetBSD on the 68K already supports both), but Python (or Lua) support would bring a lot of flexibility to the platform. Despite me being a Python hater, I must admit it’s quite an attractive addition.
What about graphics? All the software I’ve mentioned so far is text-mode only, yet historical 68K-based systems like the Mac and Amiga had beautiful graphics! Implementing X11 would be a massive pain in the ass, considering how much it relies on UNIXy features like sockets (not to mention the memory usage), and I really don’t want Wayland to have anything to do with this. I guess I’d have to roll my own graphics stack and window manager to support a WIMP interface. I could copy Apple’s homework there: they also made a monochrome graphics interface for a M68K configured with a handful of MiB of RAM. I could probably get a simple compositing window manager (perhaps make it tiling for a modern vibe ;3). Overall, outside of very simple and custom applications, functionality with real software would be problematic. Is that a big problem? Maybe I want an underpowered notebook I can put ideas and simple scripts down on, then flesh them out more fully later on. An operating system allowing more direct access to the hardware, plus direct framebuffer access, could yield some pretty cool graphing/basic design utility.
I’d need a way to communicate with the outside world. An RS-232 UART interface, similar to the HP-48 calculator (or the TI-92’s GraphLink, only less proprietary) would help for providing a remote machine language monitor in the early stages, and a real link to a more powerful (and networked) machine later on. I think real networking would defeat the purpose of the machine — to provide a way to remove yourself from modern technology and hardware, while retaining portability, reliability, and efficiency of modern semiconductor manufacturing techniques. Giving it a CF or SD slot could provide a nice way to move files around between it and a computer, maybe providing software patches. A floppy drive would be amazing: it would provide a way to store code and text, and would be just about the right storage size for what I want to do. Unfortunately, there’s not really a good way to maintain the size of the laptop while sticking a 3.5” (or worse, 5.25”) floppy drive in the middle of it. To my knowledge, 3.5” floppy drives never got thin enough to properly fit with all the other expansion slots, socketed components, and user-modifiable parts I’d want. A completely solid-state design would likely be the best option.
Anyway, uhh… I hope this made some semblance of sense and I don’t sound insane for going on a rant about building a modern computer with a 1979 CPU.
