a/n: Here's that Severitus shortfic I mentioned... I'm imagining this takes place in an alternative timeline leading into year three, where the events that lead to Harry taking the Knight Bus to London either happen differently (where he doesn't end up fleeing) or don't happen at all

Summary: Embittered and exhausted by Dumbledore's seeming lack of care about Harry's well-being at home, Severus takes it upon himself to scare the Dursleys and abscond into the night with young Harry. | CWs: Strong themes of child abuse, including mentions of bruises and allusions to physical violence.

“Fury” was not a new emotion to Severus. His anger had always boiled quite near the surface, perhaps because it was the easiest for him to process. It felt good to be justified in anger. The newest subject of his ire fit this line of thinking perfectly… try as he might to distance himself from the Potter boy, there were things he could not ignore.

“There’s something you haven’t told me, that I would very much like to know…” Severus prodded Albus in private. Nothing new with you, of course.

“I can’t very well tell you if you don’t ask, Severus,” Albus responded calmly, lightly, sitting behind his desk while Severus fought himself not to pace.

“How are Mr. Potter’s living conditions?” He knew that the boy lived with Lily’s sister and he remembered how she was in their youth. He had no doubt of what kind of conditions Potter was living in, but he needed to hear it from the headmaster himself, the man who made the decision to leave him with them in the first place.

Albus didn’t seem to react, remaining collected as he almost always did. “I understand that you’re worried about Harry…”

Severus scoffed. “He is clearly malnourished. He is exhausted, underfed, and worst of all, I have seen bruises on him when he returns in the fall. And what I am inferring from you is that there is… nothing we can do to prevent this?” His pale hands curled into fists at his sides, bunching up his robes between his fingers.

“The Dursleys are the only family Harry has left. It pains me as well to leave him in such a position, but it is safer for him there than anywhere else.” Albus removed his glasses, half-folding them and rubbing his brow tensely.

Horseshit. Severus bit his tongue before speaking through gritted teeth, “You can’t get them in line?”

“What good would threatening them do, Severus? They may hurt him further. Now, I suggest you go cool off, before you say or do something you regret, Professor Snape.”

“Yes. Good suggestion, headmaster.” By the time Severus had returned to his chambers, he already knew what he was going to do, logic be damned. The new school year was to start in a week, meaning Harry was at that retched house at this very moment. Severus grabbed his travelling cloak and a satchel of a few small, personal items before rushing out into the evening, careful not to be seen by his fellow staff members.

“Wreckless” couldn’t begin to describe how Severus made his way outside of Hogwarts’ magical boundary to disapparate to Little Whinging. He was blinded by memories of his own upbringing, the screaming, the fighting, the bruises and beatings he himself suffered. When he appeared at the end of Harry’s street, the air around him seemed to shift uneasily, as if it could sense his agony. Wand in hand, he approached the Dursley home. It was almost 6 o’clock, now, the world still quite bright in the last days of summer. There would be no reason for them not to answer.

He took a breath, attempting to compose himself, and knocked. Merlin, what am I going to say? The door was opened by an irritated and confused man, whose eyes widened at the sight of Severus.

“Can I help you?” He asked gruffly, glancing him up and down.

“I hope so. I believe this is the residence of Petunia Dursley?”

The man nodded. “That would be my wife…”

“Ah, of course. And you also live here with a child who isn’t yours?”

Mr. Dursely’s expression soured. “I knew you were one of them… what do you want with him??”

Severus raised his wand. “It is not so much what I want with him, but what I want with you and your wife. Now, if you would be so courteous as to let me in…”

Mr. Dursley, though clearly angered by the perceived threat, backed away from the doorframe, trembling slightly. “What do I and Petunia have to do with this…?!”

“I’ve come to, hopefully, prove my suspicions about you muggles wrong… to put my mind at ease. For what I have seen cannot be ignored…” He cast a cold gaze across the living room, eyes settling on a beyond-startled Petunia. “Good evening, Petunia.”

“You,” she whispered, face paling by at least six shades. A boy Harry’s age sat beside her, engrossed in a handheld game and completely oblivious to the stranger that had entered his home. Petunia looked frantically to her husband, “Vernon, why did you let him in?”

“He threatened me!” Vernon spluttered, gesturing to Severus’ wand, which he still held out in front of him, prepared to use it if necessary.

“I see you have your own son… well-kept, well-fed…” Severus continued, glaring at the youngest Dursley. “I see no bruises on this boy. So please, tell me, for the sake of my sanity, that Harry’s bruises are mere accidents from playing too roughly, as boys his age are known to do. Tell me that, in confidence, and I will leave you unbothered. I will know if you’re lying.”

“Of course!” Vernon answered too quickly, standing at his wife’s side. Petunia’s expression was even less convincing. “Harry’s always running off, getting himself banged up one way or another…” Sweat trickled down Vernon’s temple and Severus seethed, barely holding back from firing a nasty spell off at the family.

“Is that so? I would think for such an active boy he wouldn’t be so frightfully pale and skinny—”

“Well, you’re one to talk,” Vernon puffed out his chest, attempting to look strong, and for a moment Severus’ hand slipped off the handle of control.

“Silencio!” He snapped viciously, rendering Vernon’s vocal chords useless. He panicked silently, grabbing at his mouth while his wife whimpered uselessly beside him.

“Jesus Christ!” She swore, pulling her son close to her chest. “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry…!”

“Oh, quit fidgeting, I’ll remove the charm momentarily,” Severus snarled at Vernon before inhaling deeply through his nose. “Are you aware that Mr. Potter falls asleep in class? Particularly at the beginning of the year, when he has just escaped from your clutches for another fleeting moment.”

Petunia sobbed. “We… we…”

“I for one can’t stand aside and let you treat the boy this way… he is a child, entirely innocent, and it appears to me that you treat him like some kind of pest…” Severus straightened up suddenly as he heard a door open upstairs. He could sense someone behind him, peering through the stair bannister, and knew immediately that Harry had likely been listening to most if not this entire confrontation. “You can come down, Mr. Potter. It’s quite alright.”

He glanced over his shoulder and watched the invisibility cloak shift from the boy’s head. “Professor Snape…?”

Severus nodded curtly and returned his attention to the Dursleys. “I think I’ve made my point quite clear. I’ll be taking the boy off your hands.”

“But… Dumbledore…” Petunia half-gasped.

“Dumbledore doesn’t know what he’s doing. Mr. Potter, please, gather your things.” Severus then pointed his wand at Vernon, uttering the charm to reverse the effects of Silencio.

“You can have him,” Vernon growled, completely red in the face, now. “Get out of my house.”

“Gladly.” Severus turned and saw Harry with his luggage and his owl companion. Without another word, the two left the Dursley home.

“Why are you here, what’s happening?” Harry asked, bewildered.

“I will explain myself later…” Severus briefly considered side-along apparition, but decided the risk of losing Harry’s luggage was too great. Reluctantly, he held out his hand for the Knight Bus. “When was the last time you ate?”

“I had dinner… why do you care?”

The vibrant purple triple-decker bus appeared and Severus ushered the boy on, paying the fare before further guiding Harry up the spiral staircase and onto the second, mostly empty level of the bus.

“It doesn’t matter why I care,” Severus finally answered in a stiff tone as Harry sat on one of the cots. “It only matters that I do, I am here, and you are safe.”

To be honest, the other had grown quite on him lately not that he was about to show it off or admit it tho but she was quite smart and nice to have a chat with, even if at first he thought she was an insuffrable know it all, turned out to be quite the surprise probbaly if the teachers didn't paired them together in some classes he wouldn't even have talked to her at all, he wasn't the most sociable person anyways.

So, the thing is, I don't have on-hold WIPs that are languishing away... since I usually write for fests, I'm pretty consistent about posting what I start writing.
