Aa newly RWBY fan who started watching the show because I saw the bmbly confession of Vol 9 last year, and while I just started Vol 5, I think i cracked the who fell first vs who fell hard dilema. Blake was steadily descending a flight of stairs up until some point on Vol 2 in which she jumped with a perfect landing strategy. Meanwhile it would appear that Yang was on free fall since Vol 1 but in fact she spent all this time half an inch away from the ground, like that scene on Mission Impossible movie , refusing to let go while Blake was seated beside her waiting for her to take her time.

This is a very controversial topic, my friend, but I do love the simile you've come up with!

It's not that obvious from V1 + first half of V2 that Blake and Yang are really close. Sure, it's no secret that Blake has the best relationship with Yang, but we're not aware how deep that goes just by watching those first 3 volumes. I think if you really want to know the depth of their relationship from the Beacon days, you gotta read the mangas + DC comics as those fill in the missing pieces so well to understand why they were pining after each other in later volumes so freaking much.

Blake's manga anthology basically revolves around Yang, she's a central character in almost every little story there. Yang has always been supportive and patient with Blake, slowly easing her out of her shell. She constantly tries to cheer her up when she is down, make her forget her problems, takes her to places, has her arm around Blake a lot, validates her feelings, etc. There's even a line from Blake "She makes me feel at ease" in reference to Yang. I mean, what else could you look for in a romantic partner if not these qualities?

Also, there is a lot of flirting and blushing going on there too!

We know Burning The Candle is like the episode where things got a little more concrete with Yang's determination to get Blake to attend the ball, the hug, Blake's expressions, the wink (I mean, helloo??).

Personally, I am more inclined to think that Yang was the one who fell first, but she didn't acknowledge it for a long time. Or even if she did, it was probably put into the "I have a silly crush on my partner" pocket of her shorts. We know people are prone to fall for Blake like instantly (understandable tho), and I think Yang was no exception in this matter.

Blake definitely fell harder, the pining is strong with that one after Beacon fell.

She was drawn to Yang and specifically picked her as a partner in the forest. Yeah, we know there are certain similarities between her and Adam, but at the end of the day they couldn't be further apart from a personality aspect. Blake definitely realizes that early on, she just has tiny sway of trust during the Vytal festival fiasco.

I think Burning The Candle was a definitive turning point in regards to her developing feelings and they were in full swing during V3. She seems rather carefree during that volume, she even cheers for Yang on more occasions.

Yang is constantly on her mind during V4-5, but I don't want to spoil the rest for you so my analysis stops here. The more heavy evidence comes from later volumes, so keep watching!

Blake is the one person in Yang's life who's presence is so grounding for her that she can "control" Yang's emotional outbursts. Okay maybe control is not the word, rather like tame..? We've already seen it in V9 when she got angry because of Ruby's disappearance and Blake comforts her. I like to think of it as Blake's magical touch. It also happens in the RWBY x JL2 movie when she starts to get worked up and Blake's hand on her shoulder grounds her, dissipates her anger/strong emotional response.

You are so right anon! This reminds me of the times that Yang has been there for Blake as well during her moments of distress too. In the episode Burning The Candle in volume 2, Yang was sharing her story with Blake on how her life was like when she was younger, with Summer Rose being the super mom and how Raven had left her. She always wanted to know why and that she would try to look for her. By telling Blake her story she wanted to let her know that as much as she wants to find those answers that she never let that search for her mother control her. She wanted Blake to know that it's ok to slow down because you don't want to destroy yourself in the process trying to figure out everything at once (this is when Blake was willing to go to great lengths to try to stop Torchwick). The big hug Yang gave Blake afterwards was also something I think helped release some stress off for her as well 🥹🖤💛 Another big moment that comes to mind was during volume 7 in the episode Worst Case Scenario, Blake and Yang were in a cargo truck together for a plan they were assigned to do to ambush Robyn. Blake wasn't thrilled at all with having to do that, and she also brought up that she doesn't want to have to make a choice like taking someone's life to have to do the right thing (referring to her and Yang's last encounter with Adam Taurus). Yang: "We did... what we had to do."

Blake: "I know. But next time, I wanna make sure we don't have to, and I can tell you, ambushing a Huntress who's just trying to help isn't an option I'm thrilled about choosing." Yang: "Then, maybe we shouldn't." This is so important because not only does it show how much Yang listens to Blake, but that she suggests her another option that they don't necessarily have to do what their told, they do what they think is right on their own and with what they are most comfortable doing in a situation like this. Yang really understands Blake's feelings and is willing to work with her on that. I love how they're both here for each other during tough moments and it's really expressing how strong their relationship is. We love that for them 🐝✨🖤💛

If it helps. I like to judge media on what I like to call the Pizza method.

Basically, it's i don't judge frozen pizzas the same way I do the chain pizza places or the same way I do the mom and pops or the more expensive places.

Like I love Tombstone frozen pizza. Is it trash? Kinda yes. But it also super cheap and cooks up real fast and I like it.

I like Caesars pizza. Is it trash? Yes. But it's fast and cheap.

I like domino's Pizza.

I like the mom and Pop places near me.

I also like the brick fired pizza at the microbrewery near me.

Do i think tombstone is better than the brickfired? Absolutely not. But that brickfired pizza is 4x the price. I have to get dressed, go to the restaurant, wait for x amount of time. Then I really get to enjoy the pizza.

My point. I never judge pieces of media like RWBY to the same standards as others. Why?

Budget.

Marvel, HBO, Apple, Netflix, etc. All have massive budgets. That they can spend on top acting talent. Top animators. Top directors. Top writers. Top equipment. (If they spend that money properly or not, is a different story) but they have the money to produce wonderful media.

RWBY is a show that started on YouTube for free, then worked its way to what it is today. I am not saying it doesn't have talented people working on it. But these people are people who believed in what RWBY was. They were not the "top" talent in media.

I won't judge it the same scale as something made by Disney/HBO/Apple. The same thing applies to others; Indy films, any films created by production companies that are unknown, or don't have the big companies to back them. They all get judged differently.

It is perfectly acceptable to harshly judge Marvel's CGI. Or the storyline in frozen 2. But why would we judge the animation of RWBY s1-3 (that was airing on youtube) the same way?

And i am not saying we can't critique it. I am saying we can be aware if it's downsides while understanding it should not be held to the same standard as media from major production companies.

RWBY is my tombstone. I'm not saying it's trash. I am saying i see it. I see it's flaws. And I won't hold it to the same standards as other shows bc i know it doesnt have the same advantages other shows have. And it is one of my favorites bc of that. Is it the best? No. But I love it.

I’m learning to re-love RWBY all over again, and trying not to be so pretentious of a person who feels like they can only like subjectively “good media.” I have a lot of issues with the show itself, especially its racism plot lines with Blake and the White Fang.

However I think it means a lot to us after all this time, because we watched it with my sister and lover (we were only just really close friends at the time hehe) in summer break. There were only 5 Volumes at the time and RWBY Chibi. It was one of the happiest times in our life.

I also love the main girls so much, and personally disagree with comments that say they aren’t written well. If anything I think they are some of the strongest aspects of the show. It isn’t perfect as some characters are unfortunately tied to the White Fang, but they do have other things going for them. In short I’d defend these girls just like any other female character that gets too much unnecessary hate. Especially when they *checks notes* are openly queer, and are dealing with PTSD in a way people don’t like (ain’t that always how it is)

I also just like that this started off as just a fun little project amongst friends. Not a lot of people get to achieve their goal of creating a show, and they just went and did that. I also find the way the first 3 volumes look very charming and nostalgic.

I could make a whole in depth video essay about this franchise if we wanted to, maybe someday..

Oh yeah and I can’t believe we momentarily forgot, but this series was so important for our queer journey. Seeing those few Bumbleby Scenes in Volume 2, and seeing that 2 of the most popular pairings in the fandom were sapphic definitely awakened something in us.

bumbleby really was the worst kept secret

it was hinted at in Red Like Roses which was so early on in development

then Arryn outright blurted it out by asking if she could mention Blake ends up in a sapphic relationship in a pre-volume 1 livestream because no one knew the feed was live (and was told 'not yet')

everyone involved in the show or with RT in general kept acknowledging and talking about the ship (i recall a livestream where someone was talking about Barb and Aaron, and Burnie misinterpreted that as Barb and Arryn and asked "Bumbleby?")

on the volume 4 soundtrack Jeff included BMBLB specifically because he wanted to do a lighthearted love song like back in volumes 1 and 2 because 3 didn't have any and doing it for Bumbleby was such a specific choice because every other romantic song from those volumes was either for Arkos or Renora

which is why it's so funny to see it dismissed as 'no buildup' because a) new reactors pick up on it very early on so that's obvious horseshit and b) if you paid any attention to what was going on outside the show they were putting the writing on the goddamn wall

to the surprise of absolutely no one, they get first place (despite me not going in a particular order) because of reasons. They're perfect. Soulmates. Slowburn of all time. Yin and Yang. Eyes the color of each other's souls. Truest OTP to ever OTP in my book. ∞/10

I already talked about them in their own post, this scene changed my life leading to my self-discovery and it still lives rent-free in my mind.

Kyosaya (Madoka Magica)

I'd also add MadoHomu but I'm trying to keep it to just one for each fandom. That said, they still make me mentally unwell. I love them, and I did for a long time now. I can't wait for the next movie to come out and suffer.

Still down the queer cartoons making history path, these two made me insane back in the day because I still didn't understand I was queer and lots of sapphic couple were starting to appear in media, and I remember jokingly say how "lesbian ships were hauting me". All I can say now is "Thank you" lol. Anyway, they were incredibly important and all the people criticizing how little queerness there's in the show will never understand just how massive this scene was.

Catradora (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power)

Friends to Enemies to back to Friends to Lovers. Iconic. I still want a movie with their adventures bringing magic back to the universe.

Hollstein (Carmilla)

My third beloved blonde with a cat gf ship. I miss this web-series every day. Also, Natasha Negovanlis played an immense role in my gay awakening.

Ellie and Riley (The Last of Us: Left Behind)

Ellie and Dina are adorable and I love them, BUT I just will never get over these two. That dlc fucked me up. (also, they're in the same category with Korrasami as "gay ships that hauted me before I realized I was queer" lol)

Lumity (The Owl House)

I remember starting this show feeling it as the successor of Steven Universe, at least to me. We could say that at level of mistreatment from its parent company, it defenitely surpassed it, but at least I'm glad I was right and we got Luz and Amity becoming canon. I love these two and not a day passes without me yelling at Disney for what it did to them.

Bubbline (Adventure Time)

I actually watched Adventure Time fully only recently, but I always loved them even when I watched the show randomly when it appeared in tv back in the day. Getting to see the progression properly just made me love them even more.

Yasammy (Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous/Chaos Theory)

Incredibly recent addition, but I am so glad that I checked out Camp Cretaceous and got into it. It's a nice show and these two are a really cute couple, their confession and especially Yaz's internal turmoil were just so on point. I was really happy to see them go still strong in Chaos Theory, and I can't wait for next season.

Pricefield (Life is Strange)

These two caused me pain in the best possible way. I felt literal heartbreak at the Bay Ending, and I was just as emotional at the Bae one (Bae > Bay Forever) I hope the new game will respect their relationship OR ELSE.

Happy Valentine's Day my fellow RWBY fans. This should be a day focused on love. Which is why I'm going to talk about something that's been troubling me for a while. This isn't about any single post, and I'm not singling anyone out. I'd put this under a read more cut but I think it's important enough not to do that. Scroll down for TLDR and a poll.

One of the common courtesies of tumblr etiquette is: don't tag hate with things like a ship tag or character tag. Or should be common, but let's face it, it's more like uncommon.

A good chunk of tumblr users who I end up blocking are those who post hate in tags like the 'Bumbleby' tag, or 'Yang Xiao Long' tag (it'd be the 'RWBY' tag too, but I don't often go there and rarely post in it). No, it's not toxic to block people, it's how you control your tumblr experience. It's how I avoid seeing hate, or try to.

But there are some tumblr users who I don't want to block but also end up putting hate in the tags: some of my fellow fans. It's not intended the same way as those who do it out of spite, but the end result is the same: your fellow fans end up seeing stuff they might prefer not to.

There's another rule, an old one that predates tumblr: don't feed the trolls. Don't give them attention. Please delete anon hate rather than answer it, although I definitely understand how trolling trolls can be fun. Just please don't tag it with the main tags or you'll do the anon's work for them if it's hate about a ship or character.

I see all too much fan art around that gets far less engagement than posts trying to fight back against hate (and unfortunately share the hate at the same time, especially when it's something from elsewhere like reddit or twitter). If you like the art, don't only hit that heart button, reblog it too!

RWBY fandom isn't dead, but we do need to do our part to encourage artists to make and share more art. Likes alone don't help the art get in front of more fans. I don't think everyone looks in the tags to find art, some will rely on those they follow reblogging art. This goes for sharing fic too! And giving fic writers comments (and kudos on AO3).

This is an appeal to keep negativity out of the main tags. I'm not saying you can't post whatever you want, just when it comes to tagging: please spare a thought for your fellow fans who are incredibly tired of negativity. If all else fails, maybe include a tag that can be added to filters? 'Wasps' for posts about Bumbleby hate, maybe?

I don't know about anyone else, but if I wanted to see hate and get angry, I'd be on twitter or reddit. I check tags here on tumblr to find fan art, and to see fellow fans talking about how much they love RWBY and its characters and ships, and find interesting theories and analysis.

I'm also not entirely sure how tumblr works with followed tags and words mentioned in posts. Do untagged posts still show up if the word appears in the post? Does that mean breaking the word with a backslash or something to avoid it showing up? I don't know, perhaps something to consider.

TLDR: please don't feed the trolls and don't tag hate with main tags. Show RWBY fan artists and fic writers some love and reblog their posts, and comment on fics!

One last thing: a poll to find out if I'm an outlier and posting hate is actually normal in this post-twitter world.

Do you know why people say Bumbleby ruined Rwby? Do you think that's a fair statement?

To an extent, I can see why people blame BMBLB more than anything else for RWBY's writing becoming... let's just say less than what it used to be. Or at least more apparent.

I'm gonna say my piece about BMBLB for... the umpteenth time. Full disclosure, I don't like it, so if you're a Wasp looking to harass me, my full name and address is

Part of the reason a lot of fans don't like BMBLB is because it's pretty much the flagship of the FNDM and it... doesn't do anything. It's kinda like Arcane had... what was it, CaitVi, but they didn't say or do anything in the two seasons you saw them. Don't get me wrong, the fans were going nuts with all the BMBLB art and fics and whatnot, but... the show didn't do anything with BMBLB until 9 Volumes in, with their story not really being explored until Volume 6/7.

Which brings me to my biggest issue with CRWBY handling BMBLB. I've always made the comparison of BMBLB being like a steak that was left to thaw for WAY too long. Blake and Yang started off great as friends and even had a nice little friction in that friendship in Volume 3. But from Volume 4 to 6, all we had was Yangst and a LOT of Blake hate, with the latter having the worst evidence against her as a character.

Speaking of characters, I wanna talk about how bad CRWBY flubbed BMBLB as characters. Yang was struggling in her room with survivor PTSD, then pulled up her bootstraps, and rode off to join RWBY. Blake fought against the rising White Fang insurgence in Menagerie, learning to trust her friends, Sun and Ilia, and making a firm step forward for herself and her people with a NEW White Fang. And then they reunited in Volume 5, had a moment in the Volume 6 finale, and...

NOTHING. After that, there was no character development for Yang OR Blake, because neither of them did anything wrong (except murdering, lying, conspiring, etc.). Look me in the... pfp and tell me what their characters were after Adam died. The most character development we saw was them PINING for each other. Look, I love Arkos as much as the next guy (except for that one guy who REALLY doesn't like Arkos), but the whole "pining for my love interest" trope doesn't really fit the grounded theming RWBY decided to take after Volume 3. It's fun to watch for a few episodes, but when you keep being like, "Oh, it's gonna happen! Just you wait~!" then the audience is going to lose interest when nothing happens.

Or worse, you flub the actual scene like V9 did. The actual kiss is fine, and the song for it is so... tragic, because you have this perfect song for this perfect moment, but everything leading into the moment is just... bad. CRWBY literally pulled Blake and Yang to the side, threatened them with a gun, and said, "JUST KISS ALREADY"! And unlike Barbarossa, it was NOT fun for anyone me.

Like, when you compare other kiss scenes in, not just RWBY but other scenes, BMBLB was a long overdue kiss with a result of the exact opposite intent of the show. Hell, it's almost as bad as the KatAang kiss, and that one sends the A:TLA fans into a frenzy (from what I've seen and heard)!

TL;DR: I don't like BMBLB because it's hyped up to be this big thing, but it does nothing.

Day 2: Video Games

Wyatt’s birthday had been a hit. The shock that their nephew considered Neo a part of the family had made some waves. Especially with Winter being in attendance since Neo was, technically, still wanted by multiple authorities. But that shock had been overshadowed by the news from the doctor’s visit.

“TWINS!” Ghira bellowed. Kali hadn’t been able to speak a word just making an ear splitting, “SQUEEEE!”

Blake smiled lovingly at her parents antics. “So when I get home to Menagerie I will be on light duty for the rest of my pregnancy.” Her parents looks turned concerned. “I’m okay and the babies are both okay, but to be as safe as possible, I’m going to have to laze around with some good books and let Yang wait on me hand and foot for awhile.”

Her father guffawed before saying, “must be a hereditary thing then. Your mother did the same with me and she was only pregnant with you.”

Kali playfully slapped his chest. “Don’t listen to him. He INSISTED that he had to take care of me as soon as we learned you were coming. Wouldn’t hear any different from our parents OR my midwives.” Kali’s face turned serious again. “Are you sure even you won’t get bored reading that much?”

“I wouldn’t worry about that!” Yang piped up from the other side of the room, “our favorite nephew here has an idea.” When Blake turned to look she saw her wife with said nephew up on her shoulders walking over. Wyatt was holding a purple and yellow gift bag not much smaller than he was.

“Here,” he said simply as he handed the bag to her. “A gaming console that Uncle Corvus gave me. It will hopefully help fill in any extra time so you don’t get bored.”

“Wyatt! Why would you want to give away one of your birthday presents?” Kali asked over the scroll.

“Honestly, Maw-Maw Kali, I CAN’T use it. My sorcery semblance doesn’t react well to electronic devices. So until I get to New Beacon, and Professor Pine helps me get it under control, it would be safest on an island far, far away from me. Now Mama Ruby and I are due in the kitchens for baking duty. Maw-Maw Kali, Paw-Paw Ghira, good evening.” With that the tall white haired boy strolled out of the room, presumably towards the kitchen.

After a minute of stunned silence Ghira spoke up, “Kitten, didn’t you say this was his FIFTH birthday?”

Yang opened the door into the mud room, stepped in, and then immediately turned to go back out before emptying her stomach in the yard. She walked back in grumbling, “sympathetic morning sickness should only be in the mornings.”

Blake had left a portion of fish curry on the stove but Yang’s stomach rebelled at the sight of it. Instead she opened a pack of ginger snaps and munched on a few while walking to the library. Blake was napping on the couch, a pillow tucked under her belly, and a book on the floor. Yang smiled and quietly picked up the book. It was the latest from the ‘Ninjas of Love’ author.

“Knights of Passion,” Yang read the title to herself. The dustcover was fairly plain but the picture on the actual cover showed a shirtless, broad shouldered, slim waisted, blond man still in cuisses and greaves. Kneeling at his feet was a petite blanchette and busty red-head. Their peasant blouses showing a lot of…come to think about it he looked a lot like Jaune! And the white haired model could pass as a Schnee! “Cutie-cat, we are having a talk about this when you wake up.”

Nowhere near ready for bed, and not wanting to wake up the mother to be, Yang walked into the living room and turned on the television. Looking at Wyatt’s gift she decided to see how good the new games looked. She was slightly surprised to see a game already loaded. “Ancient Tablets, huh, why not?”

‘MEMORY INSUFFICIENT’

The message that flashed on the screen made zero sense. Was the console a dud? Yang quickly used the help screen to go into the settings menu and no, there were DOZENS of saved games. The Yang noticed something truly odd. Each game was saved at 1.9% completion. Out of curiosity Yang restarted one of the saved files. It was the very end of the ‘Character Creation’ part of the game. A blonde haired, purple eyed female cat faunus stared out at her. Trying another she sees a black haired, blue eyed male cat faunus. Yet another shows another combination. Yang didn’t know how many of the files she opened but she had eaten an entire box of cookies while doing so. Two files stood out, both girls, both at a whopping 2% completion. They had names. Luna and Summer.

“Okay, okay.” Yang spoke aloud. Something she did when she was especially missing her mom and dad, uncle Qrow, sometimes even Raven. “I won’t give her too much crap about the books.” Walking back to the library she kisses her wife’s cheek good night before stretching out on the second sofa. Gently grasping Blake’s hand with her flesh and blood one she had one last thought before sleep claimed her. ‘What if we have a boy?’

One of the problems I have with writing for the RWBY fandom is that it's such a fertile ground for imagination. Like, I've got so many alternative timelines in my head that I'd love to explore, but I only have so much time to write, and my desire to rehash the parts that would be mostly the same (namely, the first three volumes) only extends so far. I have a fantastic Nuts & Dolts to WhiteRose arc I'd love to do, but it's incompatible with the Milk & Cereal run I'd like to try, which itself doesn't work with the Pyrrha/Cinder ideas I have, which would clash with CinWin (which is the only thing i might deviate from Hellebore for) and Hellbirds, which I'm curious about... meanwhile, I'm pretty locked in on things like Bumbleby, Crosshares, and Rainbow Quartz, and I don't really want to write the same thing with them over and over.

I guess I could always abbreviate the Beacon arc and just highlight where things would be different, but that doesn't build up the emotionally impactful long form fic that gets people talking, y'know?
