I'm using you as an excuse to infodump my theory about the Island because I've had no in to do that, and my theory is pure opinion. Anyways:

THE ISLAND IS STUCK IN THE FUCKING FUTURE

(SCARE CHORD)

Hi so you might ask me. What the fuck do you mean by that. Well. Let's start with what we know about the Island, the King, and Wish Craft. (long ass post under cut. sorry)

The Island was redacted from the perception of outside world, via Wish Craft.

Wish Craft has the power to enable Time Craft. We see this primarily through Siffrin's timeloops, but also through the King's powers.

One of the King's powers is to show the saviors a "vision of the future."

...And this same attack is deflected back at the King by Mirabelle in ACT 5, in which the King is able to see the Island before being frozen in time.

...So. The King's "vision of the future." We're never told explicitly what this vision is. All we know is that it's apparently powerful enough to wipe the party in one hit, hearing it from a distance hurts your head, and that whatever Siffrin (and Loop) saw, they don't seem to actually be able to describe it. Even the King himself doesn't know what his vision entails.

We don't know whether the party all sees the same thing when struck by the vision, and Adrienne's answer to the question about it in the Reddit AMA is. vague? It's not a "no," and the specific wording makes me think the answer might be yes. But that's me reading into it.

Now. What do we know about the Island's redaction? The Island was affected by the wish recently, as in "like a decade ago" recently. We know that nobody in Vaugarde or the rest of the world is capable of thinking about the Island, anything closely tied to the Island's culture, or people on the Island for very long. When they do recall these things, they slip right out of reach. Particularly, the consequence for trying to think about the Island (or, more specifically, break the wish that forces the Island out of perception) is significant pain, localized in the head.

And that said pain is enough to become lethal, if pressed hard enough.

From here forward I'm running with the assumption that the King's "vision of the future" is not personalized to any individual, and is unchanging throughout the course of the whole story. Now. Remember the end of ACT 5, where the King gets hit with the deflected "vision of the future", and instead of dying, he recalls the Island and gets frozen in time? Very odd, yeah? Why wouldn't the King just die like everyone else does? He even does take 9999 damage when trying to say its name, like Siffrin does, and like the party does when they're hit by the attack.

Well. We know that he has a "true wish" that the ability to freeze Vaugarde in time grants. I don't think it's at all a stretch to guess that the King's "true wish" is to be able to remember the Island. My personal guess is that the King (and Siffrin) brought this "true wish" into effect via the "SAY ITS NAME" sequence- he even tries three times, a significant number in wishing.

The King (and Siffrin's) wish breaks, because it can't be fulfilled in this moment without breaking the wish to prevent the Island from being thought about. However. Consider the conditions at the end of ACT 5- the King sees the vision of the future reflected back to him, and what he sees is the Island. He remembers the Island, fulfilling his own wish, and is frozen in time. I consider this a compromise between his wish and the one binding the Island- the King gets to remember the Island, but nobody alive is able to think about it, because he's frozen in time; it's like the Universe is correcting itself (I WILL GET BACK TO THIS). The wish of all of Vaugarde to defeat the King is fulfilled, since he is no longer a threat, and Siffrin's wish wraps itself up soon after.

MY POINT BEING. The King's attack is a vision of the future. This "future" is of the Island, in some uncorrupted state. The saviors see it when he attacks them, and he sees it when it is deflected back to him.

The logical next question is "okay, so the Island exists in the future, but how do you know time shenanigans are even related to the Island?"

Recall a very odd series of interactions throughout the game, in which you try to interact with a piece of equipment that you already own.

The game rewinds slightly, before the item disappears, as the Universe corrects itself.

This is awfully similar to two particular events: looping back without seeing the death screen, and talking to the Daydreaming One about her sister. The latter is more interesting to me for the purposes of this theory.

In both instances, something is misaligned within the Universe (an item existing in two places, someone remembering something they're not supposed to) and it is corrected through some sort of rewind. Also compare the dialogue above to when you try to give Mirabelle the Stylish Bow when you already own it.

The world glitches, but Siffrin defuses the situation before the Universe has to intervene. Omitted from the screenshot is the fact that Mirabelle's portraits switch to happy from "catastrophically anxious" with no transition after Siffrin shows her where the bow is. Important to note is that when Mirabelle tries to recall receiving the bow, her head hurts, much like how trying to break the Island wish causes a headache.

The Universe leads you away from perception, and you can only follow.

My theory that I keep circling around is that through Wish Craft, the Island has been displaced temporally. The denizens of the Island, as well as the Island itself, still exist, but they are in the future. The Island is still loaded into the world, like how equipment is before you try to interact with it, and the Island cannot leave this quantum state, because it never actually went anywhere. The magnitude of the redaction event is so severe with the Island, because it is so much larger as an entity than a sword or a bow. There are of course things I don't really have pieced together, like why somebody would wish the Island into the future, how far into the future it is, or why equipment behaves this way. But it's the only Island theory I've seen that I have some level of confidence in, so I might as well lay out my cards for it.

When I first began seriously video editing, I didn't think much about composition or how well clips flowed together—lyric sync was arguably my main goal, and anime pieces were thrown onto the timeline pretty much purely based on that.

Now, I put much more care into the very visual elements—the effects, the match cuts, the dazzle. But in the process, I fear that I'm losing what audiences found engaging about my early videos: the actual ideas.

So, for this AMV, I aimed to put the most effort into a strong concept. The titular "other side" is a world without the Black Organization, where Shinichi can freely be himself. Heiji is waiting for that world, where he no longer has to lie and pat Conan's head and pretend that they're not peers, and Shinichi is dreaming of that world because he's always dreamed of working with somebody just like him. The thought of meeting Heiji someday, when he first learns of his existence (Episode 490), fills Shinichi with excitement. He does a lot on his own, but he also loves working on a team—and doing so, being with people, sharing his enthusiasm with others—is what he wants more than anything.

(Heck, there's even a piece of official art called "Conan's Dream Vacation" where he dreams of playing beach volleyball with Heiji and Ran and Kazuha—as himself.)

Sure, you could argue that Shinichi simply enjoys working with Heiji as Conan because Heiji treats him as he truly is. But the times he spends as Shinichi with Heiji point to the fact that no, he just really likes deducting with Heiji. Eagerness, big smiles—in "The Scarlet School Trip" (Episodes 927-928), involving Heiji in the case of the day takes precedence over solving it himself, as he immediately shares what he knows and even jostles Heiji awake when he learns more, before doing anything else, because there's no way he's going to solve it alone. He doesn't want to.

But as things are, being Shinichi is pain. He takes an antidote, but it's poison. Being Conan is what's become "normal" and "comfortable," but Conan can't be what Shinichi is to Heiji. Conan isn't strong enough to catch Heiji when he's falling. Conan can't save him from bullets. Conan can't even talk to him naturally without hiding and secrets. His dreams have become nightmares.

And it can't be easy for Heiji, either. To see someone you care about suffering. To know that Shinichi is in a dangerous situation—and involving himself in it applies that same danger to himself. It'd make sense for Heiji to walk away and wash his hands of it... but Shinichi really wants him to stay. Despite everything, he wants Heiji to stay. For that someday when they can be true partners "on the other side."

I tried to say other things in here, too. Shinichi cementing himself as a precious person to Heiji by countering his insecurities with a one truth prevails and this isn't a competition and you don't have to prove yourself to me. Heiji finding Shinichi even after becoming Conan because he'll always find Shinichi, no matter what, because he's dreaming of being "on the other side," too (even if he didn't know it initially). Shinichi pushing Heiji away with coldness because maybe it's selfish to want him to stay, maybe it's cruelty to involve him, but he can't deny that he cares, that he wants Heiji with him, that he doesn't want to do this on his own.

And while I maybe still went a little ham on the effects, I do hope my ideas are the strongest of all! "No effects" versus effects comparison can be found here!

some '23 rookies + mike lore under the cut because my lovely friend casey made the terrible decision of asking me about their lore and i did all this whoops

ok so. here’s what i’ve got for you (the lore or at least my knowledge of it isn’t as deep as joe’marr but like, what is.) so obviously as the name implies, chase, charlie, and yoshi (Andrei whose last name gets consistently mispronounced to sound kind of like yoshi and the nickname has stuck) were drafted in 2023. charlie was drafted as a 4th round WR and yoshi as a 6th round WR from PRINCETON. this is interesting in itself because a lot of people were like….why on earth are the bengals drafting two wide receivers and honestly valid point lol. but are we drafting to build a solid football team OR are we drafting to craft beautiful romantic narratives?? rare bengals FO W!

anyway, it’s also interesting because charlie (nicknamed chuck sizzle lmao) had a great reputation as a WR at purdue and once he was drafted in the 4th, yoshi was like :( :( i guess that means i’m not going to the bengals. (he also thought he’d be drafted much earlier lol but while his stats were good, the fact that he was in the ivy league and they don’t play Real Football there worked against him, also he was a Huge Track Star in college too and could have been in the Olympics. and i guess some teams thought that meant he wasn't as committed to football). and ironically, he’s turned out to be much better and more reliable than charlie! (who just can’t seem to stay on the field cuz of injuries, but when he IS on the field he’s a great punt returner!) despite all that, they were very fast friends and definitely became close first. 

chase brown has a sad tragic backstory that the nfl loved talking about in the lead up to the ’23 draft. he’s a twin (his brother plays defense/special teams on the eagles! already got a ring!!) and they grew up in canada with a single mother who could very rarely make ends meet for them. but, the twins got Discovered in high school and were sent off to some fancy football high school in florida i think, where they stayed with a very Stable God Loving Football Loving Family who they think of as their second parents :’) so much so that chase actually almost didn’t pursue football in college! and went to a school that wasn’t great at football but was good at….airplane pilot training? i guess the dad of this family was a pilot and chase wanted to be just like him 🥹 (we loveeeee a Father Figure Complex). so because sydney (his twin) wasn’t Crazy, he immediately went to illinois where there’s an actual good football program. and eventually chase realized that the whole pilot school thing wasn’t actually for him and was like okay wait football right let me do that, and joined sydney at illinois where they could be teammates again <3 <3 and they were both very successful!

i believe sydney ended up getting drafted a few rounds earlier than him, which was obviously sad, but then if you watch the video of zac drafting chase they have a very touching moment :’) chase i think took a little longer to be part of charlie and yoshi’s early bff-ness just because they were in different position groups and also he got hurt for a good bit of his rookie year and i don’t think was around QUITE as much. (and his twin also seems to be a distant part of the group, he and chase talk on the phone almost every day! they tried to stop in the lead up to the bengals - eagles game this season but it was too hard 😔) 

but anyways, those three became Very Very Good friends and all lived in the same building (although i think chase may have moved because he had a kid a month ago….) and all their girlfriends are besties too and they basically hang out alllll the time. last offseason, chase and yoshi (but not charlie 😔) went to atlanta together to train with a coach that helped both of them with receiving (because zac told them they both needed to work on that lol, you’d think yoshi wouldn’t as much as chase but! princeton!) and there was lots of social media of them working out together and then drinking and partying together, and they’re doing that this offseason too! (although this time chase brought his gf and kid, so perhaps slightly less partying will occur. but more uncle time!) 

then in ’24 we signed mike g as a free agent, who basically had been tossed around the league for most of his career :( he was drafted by the dolphins and did alright there, but then got franchise tagged and not utilized particularly well. he signed with the patriots and also wasn’t used well there! so luckily for us, the rest of the league didn’t really believe in him and we got him for cheap (ideal bengals signing lol). some notable Lore here: mike was apparently part of the “Burrow Bowl” which was a game late in the 2019 season between the bengals and dolphins, where the loser would be in position to draft Joe, who was already the most likely first pick of the draft. and mike scored two TDs that game! helping the dolphins get a win (but really, a loss, thanks mike!!!) mike also went viral one time on the dolphins for doing an absolutely Terrible Griddy to the point that ja’marr had to comment on it on twitter laughing at him <3 and that’s since become a bit of a joke between them <3 (they did a lovely griddy together this year after one of mike’s TDs where ja’marr could barely do it he was laughing so hard lol). anyway! that’s mike, he’s a tall, goofy, lovable guy (who also, according to one anonymous reddit user, has a HUGE dick and apparently such a high stamina that one of the girls he hooked up with in college had to use an ice pack the next day 🥲 which has led some of us to believe that maybe that’s why he needs to have multiple partners. for everyone’s sake 🥲)

mike really found his groove on the bengals, like many a TE before him (this next season is actually going to be the first year joe has had the same TE two years in a row! normally they do so well with him that they price themselves out of the bengals range lol but i guess mike wanted to stay! for his boyfriends???) and also instantly clicked with the ’23 rookies, which is funny because he’s definitely older than them but 100% has the exact same sense of humor. they are always together in every social media video put out by the bengals (and also were shown watching games together at each others' places during hard knocks). they are also CONSTANTLY commenting weird shit on each others posts on instagram (please just look through them or go through my tags for them lol and see). the rest of the team has obviously noticed this and the social media people made them a photoshopped picture of the four of them together in the Step Brothers pose that yoshi has since hung in his apartment <3 which is adorable. 

but okay oh man this got long and is probably way more than you wanted. again i recommend looking through my tags for them and enjoying all their goofy shit :’) mike getting the extension just worked out so well for them to have many more Moments together and i’m soooo excited about that (if nothing else in the upcoming season at this point lol).

On “Suicide” 1956 and 1970

My interpretation of the meaning of Paul’s early song “Suicide” and its purpose on his debut solo album

The verse Paul had written in 1956 goes,

“If when she tries to run away

And he calls her back, she comes.

If there’s a next time, he’s okay

Cause she’s under both his thumbs.

She'll limp along to his side

Singing a song of ruin. I’d

Bet he says nothin’ doin’

I, I’d call it suicide.”

The song’s protagonist can’t leave an abusive relationship. The abuser knows it doesn’t matter what they do, the protagonist will always come back. Even when they’re limping, even when they vocalize their knowledge that this relationship is damaging, they’ll always come back, and the abuser is nonchalant. In the end,the singer likens the protagonist’s return to the relationship to suicide.

Just as the woman in the song is under her husband’s thumb, around the time this was written, Paul was very much under his father’s thumb. This was not due to any lack of self-direction or courage on his part. Jim was physically abusive (like the husband in the song) an addict, extremely controlling, and emotionally both unavailable and volatile. Still, in the same way that the woman in the song always goes back to her husband, Paul loved his father. It’s likely that Paul’s unusual degree of deference to his father was a combination of self-preservation and a genuine desire to help and please his father. Jim was also honest and well-liked, a lot of fun, intelligent, talented, a buyer of wonderful presents, and a supporter of Paul as a musician, and Paul felt great admiration and gratitude to Jim. And yet, Paul is not only the protagonist of “Suicide.” He’s also the singer. And the singer knows this relationship is destructive – bad enough to be likened to deadly.

So, “Suicide” is about Paul’s relationship with his father.

Enter John Lennon. Based on John’s perfect knowledge of “I lost my little girl” a full dozen years after being first shown it, I’m inclined to believe John was fully acquainted with the song “Suicide” and though I think pigs would fly before Paul would discuss its meaning with John, it’s not unlikely that he had his guesses.

It is also my tentative belief (based on the wording of the quote in which John talks about Paul and Jim and the issues with control and violence, the fact that John hit a lot of people, but never Paul, and the documented fact that John Lennon is intensely perceptive when it comes to Paul McCartney) that John knew Jim hit Paul. John hated Jim for all the same reasons Paul obeyed him. He hated that Jim was abusive, and he hated that Paul loved him. But. And here’s where I might be stepping on some toes. John and Jim share some important similarities.

Positives first. Both men are praised for being honest to a fault (Jim owning up to gambling debts and John being open and brash in interviews). Both are well-liked by almost everyone who knew them (People go on and on about what a gentleman Jim was, what a stand-up guy. People always think they’re John’s best friend after spending three hours with him) Both recognize Paul’s talent and give him the support he needs to pursue it (John obviously to a much higher degree) Both are described as being the life of the party and the center of attention.

Now negatives. Both men are highly susceptible to addiction. Both men pressured Paul about his lifestyle. Both are known to have been violent toward people they loved (although John was never violent toward Paul. This is important, and will be revisited). Both men had difficulty controlling their emotions or expressing them in a healthy way.

John eventually won his battle with Jim, as he states very proudly that Paul chose him in the end. He stood up to his father, as John claims he constantly begged him to do, and cast his lot with John, their partnership and their music. And, obviously, it was the right decision. Not only because it resulted in the greatest musical collaboration of all time, but because with John, Paul exchanged violence for softness. John was capable of a shocking level of care and tenderness, and for many years that was absolutely lavished on Paul. And I think they were both privately proud of that fact.

Jump to late 1969 / early 1970. John’s actions during the divorce (forcing Allen Klein – another violent and controlling man – on Paul, manipulating – self-admitedly – George and Ringo into turning against Paul, threatening – accidentally or on purpose – to treat Paul the way he’d treated Cynthia in their divorce, etc.) were hurtful enough to Paul that he was, in fact, suicidal (barely finding the strength not to suffocate himself in his pillow, taking way too much of everything, half-hoping he’ll overdose) and when he is finally pulling himself up again, he’s ignoring all John’s attempts to get him to come back (songs, interviews, letters, post-cards).

He puts out his debut solo album, the content of which makes John angry, though to an outsider, there doesn’t seem to be much there in the way of messaging.

The part Paul chose to include was the abuser’s shrugging lack of surprise that the protagonist has returned, yet again, despite their knowledge that they’re walking back into abuse. I believe Paul’s message to John here is this: You were the one who taught me that there is a certain level of treatment I should expect from people who say they love me. Now that you’re the one who’s hurt me, you have to deal with what you’ve created. I’m not just going to come back to you with my tail between my legs and act like nothing happened. You taught me better than that. I’m really leaving. We’re really over.
