So ive been using linux for a good while now, and its now officially my daily driver. Windows is now permabenched in a removed hhd in a drawer unless something awful happens. (Good riddance, havent truly enjoyed windows since xp)

And from this I think that people urging others to move to linux are not doing so in the correct way.

Instead of trying to push a friendly distro and insisting it will work for everything and everyone, instead check if the hardware they are using specifically is good for linux and if so what families.

One computer will be a breeze with any distro, another could have a few quirks but be basically fine, however another of the same year and manufacturer could be an uphill battle thats straight up unusable even for someone who knows how to do the kernel edit workarounds for all but specific distros, if that.

My desktop took linux mint like a dream, 100% painless with no fucking about to make it work and even no need for an ethernet cable to get things started. My dinosaur laptop (may it rest in peace after other components died) had a few issues but also worked very well with little effort with mint. My current junk laptop is an uphill battle that will require arch AND edits to the kernel paremeters to work without being filled with screen flashing and full system freezes at random and im still gearing up the gumption to give it another few attempts to actually pull it off.

Each of these computers is a VERY different experience, and if your prospective switcher is using a computer that doesnt play well, its NOT going to work, they will get frustrated, and they will give up. They have to work with what they have.

Instead of going right to telling them to switch and that anything is good, Encourage people to search up their pc+linux compatibility if they are looking to switch to determine if its viable for a newbie who doesnt want to struggle, then offer a distro that has a live usb/dvd version if possible for them to test without install, and a big enough userbase that troubleshooting is as painless as possible.

If its a laptop, archwiki has lists of those by maker (linked in the page given) with notes on what has been tested in that family of linux.

This, I think, above all, is the most important thing when trying to get people to switch:

MAKE SURE THEIR HARDWARE IS GOOD FOR IT

Not just the pc, but the peripherals too; their mouse, their mic, their webcam, their keyboard- these things are not always supported well.

Linux can be fast, easy, and really comfortable and painless with little to no troubleshooting or tedious workarounds to get your stuff to work; but you have to be using the right hardware.

Yes, make sure you have alternative programs lined up that are actually good (stop reccing gimp when krita is a way better P$ alternative for people trying to draw digitally), and maybe consider talking about how to run wine in a newbie friendly way for things they might need for work reasons that dont work on linux normally(and accept that it might not work even with wine), but above all, make sure that its not just being phrased as 'a you problem' when it might be their system that is the issue there.

For prospective switchers that tried but gave up because of glitches or freezes or things otherwise not working: It wasnt you being bad at computers. Sometimes it just doesnt work with that hardware well and there is nothing you can do. People dont warn you about this, but its a very real issue.

If you still want to try linux, when you eventually get a new computer in the future, look for one that seems to be supported by linux well- some pcs even come with linux preinstalled for you even (dell does this with ubuntu and ubuntu has skins that looks windows esque). Asking specifically for linux compatible or linux preinstalled computers signals to developers to make more computers that work with linux, and makes it easier to get linux friendly stuff.

If not, there are windows 11 neutering tools out there in the wild that are very useful and are a plenty fine alternative to switching. You should only switch if you want to switch.

and again i will repeat, the issue isnt "oh heres sfw art of a character that just so happens to have nsfw art too" its the fact that smile demons as a species is heavily linked to NSFW themes and latex kink. the species is incredibly unsafe for minors and there is proof they do little to nothing to protect minors from owning and interacting with characters featuring fetish and NSFW themes. by posting and talking about smile demons, you indirectly promote this species to a server of mostly minors in the same way that seeking them in ads would (which is against the terra server rules). please look through the whole post here and the imgur gallery linked within to see the extent to how this species should not be a place for minors to play around in.

and this is all without mentioning the fact that xil directly linked to the character's toyhouse that features suggestive art and several images of the character wearing a gimp mask, with none of these images being maturity locked, and a minor directly replying to them within the same screenshot

i agree, this isnt grooming because grooming is a pattern of behavior that requires specifically targeting minors. but this is extremely irresponsible and it is concerning that a moderator is so flippant about kink-related characters in a minor-ridden server.

in my opinion, there is no such thing as "too strict" when it comes to protecting minors from seeing nsfw and fetish content, especially in current year where it is incredibly easy for predators to access children via "all ages" servers.

What program/software/app is used? How do you arrange the pictures in a pleasing way? This isn't some negative ask, I am just curious!

me personally i browse safebooru and wiki sites to find the images i need ^^ wikis for the fandom youre editing for are really good resources

if the requester isnt specific enough, i will ask for more details- but if they give me the character and are just vague on the theme, ill just come up with smth generic rather than going for a specific theme lol

i use gimp, its a free program ^^ i dont know if its the best choice, but its what ive been using for years so im used to it…..

and honestly i just experiment a bunch! i also look at other edits for inspiration too. i try out many ideas as i edit, and discard most of them by the time im done lol. a lot of the time the end result will look pretty different to the drafts i initially came up with. dont be afraid to try new things!

I use Canva to format my requests, use fandom wikipedia for research on the characters requested, and look for public use images that match given themes.

I do the image searching through Google, Tumblr, and Canva's built in items. If I find something on Google, I look for its source to make sure it isn't someone's fanart or similarly private.

I haven't dealt with anyone being too vague before, so I'm unsure how to answer that. Though I'd likely just ask for clarification.

i cant speak for the photo editing software, but i can for the painting and illustration ones ive used!

when i first got a tablet it came with photoshop elements, and as an illustrator i found it quite complicated (which is fair enough its made for photo editing)

i mostly used a pirated version of painttool sai, but i did recently pay for it cuz like, even tho i dont draw as much, sai was developed by one dude in japan so i might as well toss some money his way for all the years i used his program. also when i bought it, i believe the yen was pretty weak, so what i thought would cost $50USD ended up being like $35.

clip studio paint is the one that allll the artists are using nowadays, i had a pirated version on my old laptop and might buy the single purchase when im able to draw again :') it does have a subscription service to use on ipad, as well as paint pro vs ex which, idk all the different features cuz i didnt spend enough time with it before my laptop died. i think its like $50 for the single purchase BUT it goes on sale pretty often and my friend got it for like $25

procreate my fucking beloved forever and everrrrr its $10 forever, its really simple to use but also robust in features, i think theyre coming out with an animation version? and you can get a ton of brushes online for free or customize them all you want yourself. basically everything ive drawn on this blog has been thru procreate, it was a lifesaver when i couldnt afford a pc and its still my most used app.

before i knew how to pirate sai, i used firealpaca, completely free and very simple, GREAT for beginners to digital art, but personally i found it a little limiting. medibang is basically the same as firealpaca but its also on ios and android and features a cloud server so you can easily move between devices. it is littered with ads tho :\ but the free version works well enough for beginners

i know a lot of ppl rep for krita, but it just didnt work for me, i think cuz i was using it on my dads old macbook but im willing to try it out again, completely free and i think open source but dont quote me on that lol

the game definitely has an air of genuinety to it and commitment to the setting that a lot of games nowadays lack i feel, not ALL but, a LOT. which is fun to see. obviously the writing in vtmb is very very flawed, as i said before but it's a time capsule as you said, which it doesnt justify the weird shit in it but when it comes to atmosphere and general... like... love for the goth/alt 2004 scene? is really palpable. you dont get games where you can have your protagonist dress up in a skin-tight latext gimp suit unironically nowadays as far as im aware, without the idea of that design being used for a villain character instead

it's definitely a lot to talk about. cuz the writing in some dialogues is very good. like personally its less "not minding" for me more like "i kind of expect it from a game made in 2004" so i try to be very conscious while also being like. This is one of my favorite games ive ever played .

first, if its a flash, i go to the /f/ archive and search for it. the ui sucks and doesnt make sense and often have some filth you have to sift through. if i know the name of the file or the right keywords it goes by fast but ihave spent literal hours before trying to find something i remember seeing like 10 years ago

once i found the .swf file i get it, i have a flash player debug tool thats meant for devs but its really just a lightweight tool that lets you play flash files, i love it. often times you can play flash games on it! anyways, i play the vid, i need to deminsions of the video. theres no way to know in the properties and stuff

so i have to take a screenshot. go to gimp. paste it there. remove the header/ribbon and the border (yes the border. cuz theres a single pixel around it all that gets captured in the sc and im too dumb to mentally to the calculationa nd trust myself i did it right when getting the width/height) after that i can use gimps layer properties to find the dimensions

i have the dimensions so i have to go to OBS and set the video capture to the window at that size

often times i have to wait for the video to do a full rotation after i hit play cuz i cant record it in time. so ill record near the end of the first rotation andwait for it to play through a full time and thats my basic recording. i go to openshot, a cheap and decent but frustrating video editor, put the video in, go to where the audio waveforms repeat, often isnt easy lol, and trim off the edges, you can easily see where it starts and stops here actually

openshots lame and you have to manually set the right height and width or else itll be all weird looking on the export, i often forget this and have to open up gimp and again with a new screenshot and edit the screenshot again to find the deminsions cuz i usually close gimp when im done the first time teeehee

NOW. that i have the video, its still not ready teehee. its a big file and i dont know how tumblr goes abt compressing or optimizing large video files so i wanna make it as small as possible, i open handbrake, a tool that specifically compresses videos and stuff, i enable "web optimized" and export it

it may seem picky but like. 50MB (left) to 6MB (right) is a big deal, especially with bigger files, you can get from 151MB down to 10MB. like, it can help A LOT

and then its ready to upload to tumlbr and then i just have to wait for tumblr to post it, which sometimes takes 15 minutes before it failing and i have to try again

can i be honest, and show you how much annoying tedious work goes into uploading the pururin vid. or a good bit of stuff i upload for that matter

hi! i was wondering how do you make your lookbooks? im horrible at photoshop/gimp so if you could, could you describe it in detail of what to do?

hi there! i'm so sorry for the late reply! i made a mini tutorial here going into detail on how i take pictures of my sims in cas and how i edit them! i use paint tool sai for the majority of my edits and add filters in photoshop. here’s a more detailed process on how i edit my lookbooks after this step (under the cut)

this part of my editing process mostly uses clipping layers and selection tool, so it’s a good idea to get familiar with those. i’ve never used gimp before, but i know that photoshop has both of these tools and i know there are other art/photo editing programs that do too (procreate, clip studio paint, sai, etc).

once i’m finished cutting out the background from cas and editing my sims, i arrange them on my canvas in a way i like:

the checkered background shows that it is transparent, so i am able to add a background underneath the sim

i add a layer below my sim to act as my “photo template”. i use a template so i know where to put my images below my sim. i included the png below so you can feel free to use it for your own lookbooks. you can also make your own if you’d like and mess around with the layout for your background.

once i have my template ready, i gather some photos from pinterest that i feel match my lookbook. i usually try to go by the colour scheme or general aesthetic of the look. i then loosely arrange the photos over the template. they don’t have to perfectly overlap since we’ll be clipping them in the next part

this next part can be a bit tricky to describe so just bear with me haha,, basically, i use clipping layers to add my photos and cut them to the template without having to erase any of the excess. when you “clip” a layer to another layer in photoshop, it will essentially take the shape of that layer?? i’m not the best at explaining it but its a really easy way to add my photos without having to specifically crop them to perfectly fit the template. 

to clip layers in photoshop, first put your photo layer above your template layer

then go up to your “layer” option in the menu bar and select “create clipping mask”. 

you can also hold the alt key and position your mouse so it’s between the two layers, then click, as a shortcut. i prefer doing this since it’s faster and especially more helpful when i have to clip multiple layers

once i have my background ready, i’ll add my sim and make adjustments if necessary

you can leave it here if you’d like, but i like to take it one step further by adding a subtle shadow underneath to add some dimension and separate the background from the sim! i start by making a selection of my sim. this can be done easily by holding + clicking the ctrl key over the thumbnail of your sim layer. its important to make sure that your sim is on a transparent layer so you get a clean selection of the sims silhouette

your selection should look something like this

with the selection made, make a new layer below your sim layer for your shadow. then, select a dark colour and use the paint bucket tool to fill in your selection. i try to avoid using a pure black for the shadow since it tends to look pretty harsh, and try and pick something similar to the colours of the layout. for this one, i went with a dark purple.

your layer should look something like this

i then add a blur by going into filter > blur > gaussian blur, then adjust according to preference. you should have something like this

i then add my sim back and adjust the opacity of my shadow layer if needed

and here’s what the finished lookbook looks like! i hope this made sense and was helpful in some sort of way,, feel free to experiment with this method and create some cool stuff :)

She sensed him coming, her flowers screaming at her to save herself. part of me wants to hope she took one look at that abomination and noped the fuck out of there to slaughter swamp or something. but we know ivy, she stands her ground like a tree planted by a river. she looks people like batman and joker right in the eye and down the barrel of a gun and says “no, you move” Shes not a good person, but in this verse she might as well be the hero of the story, maybe the only meta human in gotham who stood a chance against him. The batman who laughs was scared of her and thats why she had to die. if she’d just minded her own business she might still be here but no. She dares the batman who laughs to come for her, she’s going to take him out. for what he did to her plants, to gotham, to HER home and HER friends. unfortunately for her ivy was one of the first on his kill list. She doesn't go down without a fight. ironically it was her human qualities, the human drive to help people that got her killed. she heard one of the robins crying and went to investigate. the batman who laughs doesn't care about those robins, he’s got a basement full of jokerized kids to throw at people. 1 to trick her and a few more to hold her down while he doused the lot of them with weedkiller and gasoline then poof.

i doubt the botanical gardens will ever be the same. 

Scarecrow

part of me wants to say he’s loving this. He’s enjoying all the suffering and sadness and fear as the batman who laughs murders everyone and everything from the dandelions upwards . but he cant, not just because he’s not the one causing it. this is fear without meaning or purpose, this is killing hope so thoroughly that there is nothing left for people to fear, not even death. he’s not so foolish as to think he wont also be on the batman who laughs chopping block. so he makes himself scarce, works on a toxin that might be able to stop him or even slow him down so someone has a shot at it. Jon knows hes going to die, its only a matter of time before that thing calling itself the darkest knight sends one of his minions to his doorstep. He’s been working on something to try and help the rabid robins. he has a small soft spot in his cold obsidian heart for kids and looking at these creatures makes him physically ill. 

he thinks hes made a breakthrough, thinks he’s finally got a formula that will effect batman and the joker and hopefully, whatever abomination they’ve become . he decides theres no time like the present to try it out when word of the other rouges deaths reach him. he’s the last one left and thats....well its scary. His surprise attack works, the robins go down without a fight, screaming and scratching at their faces, their throats and each other. regrettable but if he stops the darkest knight now, maybe jon can help them. Just when he thinks he’s got him, scarecrow goes down. so close, he falls at the finishing line, his toxin having as much effect as a gentle summers breeze. Much like the original scarecrow , the batman who laughs likes using guns. For jon however? he makes an exception. poor scarecrow gets eviscerated by his own scythe, pilfered from arkham asylum by the batman who laughs. gotta love the classics, right?

Riddler

Riddler was second on his kill list. only because the batman who laughs knew how much it would annoy riddler not to be at the top. He’s another rogue who stood a chance of stopping him if he really tried. sadly edward is nowhere near as altruistic as harvey, and could never be as strong as ivy. He likes to think his escape is for everyone's benefit. live to fight another day and all that. He learned from harvey and pamelas mistakes, took one look at this new batman and his creepy kids and said “fuck that noise” and tried to run. except he didn't really try. god if he’d only gotten out of the city, he would have been the only rogue that survived. the batman who laughs looks at him like a pathetic insect, unworthy of notice. he’d have killed riddler eventually, maybe put him in a riddle with no answer or a trap with no escape for extra irony points but he wasn't about to stop the little green cockroach from skittling away.  but of course, riddlers ego got in the way; he just HAD to try and best this new batman, no matter how much he scared the shit out of riddler he just HAD to try. and of course, pride comes before downfall. 

The batman who laughs helpfully provided riddler with some rope to help break his fall. 

Harley Quinn

some part of her was happy to have joker back. he was different, scarier but she was used to the abuse. what she wasn't used to were all the kids. she recognised damian wayne but didn't quite put the pieces together to realise it was bruce under there. she thought maybe he was just a random casualty . she tried hard to look after the kids but they act like animals rather than humans, there was nothing she could do.As time went on she found it harder and harder to sit at the right hand of this clown prince of horrors. harley has always been along for the ride, but how are you supposed make the whole world laugh if everyone in it is dead? i dont know what happens to harley in this world. either she leaves and much like joker, the batman who laughs fails to notice, shes killed by him because he was bored or she does when the world is destroyed by barbatos. either way, no happy endings here.

hi !! for art or gfx? if its art ive sold my soul to clip studio paint. i think its normally around 50usd to buy a pro license, but i got it on sale so it ended up being 20usd.

if you want something free i tried autodesk's sketchbook between making the switch from firealpaca to csp. it has a really great interface, v high quality, good brushes, etc. iunno why autodesk made it free but it certainly (to my knowledge?) didnt downgrade the quality. i still have some wips where the sketches were made in sketchbook hah. i rly.. need to go thru that folder more.

im saying all this as a mac user, so if you have windows, while i think all these should work? on windows too?? another one ive heard tons about and recently had a chance to try myself is paint tool sai. its another more complex drawing program like csp except. for windows. i rly love the brush options sai gives you, esp for custom ones. always trying to emulate them in csp but theres jus something not there, never adds up well. sai has like a month long trial version thats free, off the top of my head iunno how much it is but its NOT expensive at all. maybe around the same as csp.

(i jus realized sai 2 recently released this year so all info i know is for og sai. sai 2 might be more costly)

sai i think is also what ppl use as a low-grade gfx editor. supports animation?? should at least??? but ye there is a lot to do there.

if you like ps but dont wanna pay for it photopea is a browser emulator of ps. kinda weird to work in a browser + does require internet but it does function exactly the same. can open up an existing project. can export things. jus. thru google. magic.

i used gimp for the longest time to edit stuff. its still lurking around here somewhere. the bad thing abt gimp is the more you add to it the longer it takes to read thru everything and load. i had a tonnn of assets installed so it always took a small eternity to even want to start up. past that i still think its a good program. if you want something thats smaller but functions better try seahorse!! that might be dated actually lmao. does anyone still own seahorse.

tbh my computer doesnt support the latest cc updates at all lmao so all my adobe software i have is ripped 2019 cc stuff. if you like an adobe program n wanna use it do yourself a favor and download an older version. better/free/less time-consuming/easier to deal with. if its not a cc version you dont even have to rip it. jus download that bitch n start it up. (if it is cc you gotta key it so you can use it after trial period, but its not that hard, jus an extra step rly)

BY the way the other day when I was drawing that pic of my style savvy oc Arden i decided to play with audacity some more and some new discoveries. have been found (i used u-law and big endian as the settings when importing the raw data into audacity)

the first pic was just a basic bmp (converted from png in ms paint lol) with random effects thrown on for fun nothing really crazy

BUT the next two, the mostly gray ones, so I had converted the png to a tiff but specifically i tried using gimp on its default tiff settings, and then saved a couple copies of the tiff with wahwah and echo on them respectively, and i got this gray fuzzy whitenoise looking situation which is cool BUT THEN when i went to put these tiffs back into pngs (tumblr cant upload tiffs) I put them into ms paint ‘cause it was fast BUT....they got....colourful??? thats what the bottom two are, so okay like

i have a theory, when i fuck with the tiff files in audacity, particularly with the more destructive effects like wahwah and echo, i’ve noticed that the exported tiff usually has a lot of mysterious transparency (to the point where the thumbnail image is barely visibile) BUT when i put it into like the default windows photo viewer or like clip studio paint (thats what i used to convert the middle images into pngs for tumblr) it tends to look this specific way, mostly gray where the data has been fucked with. BUT ms paint, i think it must interpret the jumbled data of my fucked up tiffs differently than the windows photo viewer or most art programs, because it turns the gray parts into all these colours. i think maybe these different programs are all trying so desperately to understand my garbled data. is it transparency? is it gray? is it a bunch of colours? thats up to the program to decide hjksahjfdmsfds very fun i think, i’ll keep at my experiments and hopefully i can compile them all into one place for reference someday
