Ok, here’s my oh-so-humble inaugural attempt at knotless braids. First, this took several hours despite the fact that I only did knotless braids in the top. I decided to redirect my cornrows from last week straight to the back of my head, then arranged them in an updo which I fed into the loose top knot. The sides and back of my head are the most tender so I decided not to attempt even the knotless braids in these areas. Next, I took the cornrows down in the top and began to add hair in knotless braids. It was a little challenging initially and I still see small humps in some braids where I clearly added hair, but I suspect I will get better with the mechanics of it with repetition. While my head IS sore from all the manipulation, it’s not due to tight braids or pulling (which I’m excited about!). After the first few braids, I knew this protective style was gonna work for me because it feels nearly weightless with zero tugging at the root. I would love to have a professional do this in the post-COVID future (hopeful) if I can find someone who understands my standard of preferring no pain and keeping my hair on my head as opposed to tension alopecia because you’re trying to get every hair in the braid. No, ma’am! Now that I’m really looking at the parts in the front, I clearly didn’t give a flying phuck and just put five in each cornrow I took down but y’all know I’m not fanatical about that. So essentially the top is knotless braids and the rear view pic is just my hair. I’m excited because I hope to leave this for more than a minute and I think I have a great chance of getting past the 7 days my braids survived in my last attempt. 🤦🏿‍♀️.
