"It’s technically possible for the UK to achieve its goal of having a clean power system by 2030, and doing so should reduce electricity bills and bolster the country’s energy security, the grid operator says in a study commissioned by the new Labour government.
The context
The UK recently shut its last coal-fired power plant and aims to slash its use of gas turbines as it seeks to all but eliminate fossil fuels from its electricity mix by the end of the decade.
In 2023, renewables and nuclear accounted for 62% of the country’s electrical output, while fossil fuels held a 38% share. Under the 2030 clean power target, fossil fuels (gas) would be reduced to less than 5% of the mix.

“The analysis concludes that clean power is a huge challenge but is achievable for Great Britain by 2030,” the National Energy System Operator said in a statement as it published the study.
Overall system costs are unlikely to increase if the target is met, and tariffs could in fact decline as legacy power contracts expire and if the state makes sufficient progress on energy efficiency gains, flexibility mechanisms, improving grid connection processes, and overall policy modernisation.
Significant investments are required in a short amount of time, but they would allow the UK to become a “leader” in new technologies while also reducing the country’s exposure to potential energy price shocks stemming from spikes in international gas prices, as was the case after Russia invaded Ukraine.

Milton Orr looked across the rolling hills in northeast Tennessee. “I remember when we had over 1,000 dairy farms in this county. Now we have less than 40,” Orr, an agriculture adviser for Greene County, Tennessee, told me with a tinge of sadness.
That was six years ago. Today, only 14 dairy farms remain in Greene County, and there are only 125 dairy farms in all of Tennessee. Across the country, the dairy industry is seeing the same trend: In 1970, more than 648,000 US dairy farms milked cattle. By 2022, only 24,470 dairy farms were in operation.
While the number of dairy farms has fallen, the average herd size—the number of cows per farm—has been rising. Today, more than 60 percent of all milk production occurs on farms with more than 2,500 cows.

This massive consolidation in dairy farming has an impact on rural communities. It also makes it more difficult for consumers to know where their food comes from and how it’s produced.
As a dairy specialist at the University of Tennessee, I’m constantly asked: Why are dairies going out of business? Well, like our friends’ Facebook relationship status, it’s complicated.
The Problem with Pricing
The biggest complication is how dairy farmers are paid for the products they produce.
In 1937, the Federal Milk Marketing Orders, or FMMO, were established under the Agricultural Marketing Agreement Act. The purpose of these orders was to set a monthly, uniform minimum price for milk based on its end use and to ensure that farmers were paid accurately and in a timely manner.
Farmers were paid based on how the milk they harvested was used, and that’s still how it works today.
Does it become bottled milk? That’s Class 1 price. Yogurt? Class 2 price. Cheddar cheese? Class 3 price. Butter or powdered dry milk? Class 4. Traditionally, Class 1 receives the highest price.
There are 11 FMMOs that divide up the country. The Florida, Southeast, and Appalachian FMMOs focus heavily on Class 1, or bottled, milk. The other FMMOs, such as Upper Midwest and Pacific Northwest, have more manufactured products such as cheese and butter.
For the past several decades, farmers have generally received the minimum price. Improvements in milk quality, milk production, transportation, refrigeration, and processing all led to greater quantities of milk, greater shelf life, and greater access to products across the US. Growing supply reduced competition among processing plants and reduced overall prices.
Along with these improvements in production came increased costs of production, such as cattle feed, farm labor, veterinary care, fuel, and equipment costs.
Researchers at the University of Tennessee in 2022 compared the price received for milk across regions against the primary costs of production: feed and labor. The results show why farms are struggling.
From 2005 to 2020, milk sales income per 100 pounds of milk produced ranged from $11.54 to $29.80, with an average price of $18.57. For that same period, the total costs to produce 100 pounds of milk ranged from $11.27 to $43.88, with an average cost of $25.80.
On average, that meant a single cow that produced 24,000 pounds of milk brought in about $4,457. Yet, it cost $6,192 to produce that milk, meaning a loss for the dairy farmer.
More efficient farms are able to reduce their costs of production by improving cow health, reproductive performance, and feed-to-milk conversion ratios. Larger farms or groups of farmers—cooperatives such as Dairy Farmers of America—may also be able to take advantage of forward contracting on grain and future milk prices. Investments in precision technologies such as robotic milking systems, rotary parlors, and wearable health and reproductive technologies can help reduce labor costs across farms.
Regardless of size, surviving in the dairy industry takes passion, dedication, and careful business management.
Some regions have had greater losses than others, which largely ties back to how farmers are paid, meaning the classes of milk, and the rising costs of production in their area. There are some insurance and hedging programs that can help farmers offset high costs of production or unexpected drops in price. If farmers take advantage of them, data shows they can functions as a safety net, but they don’t fix the underlying problem of costs exceeding income.
Passing the Torch to Future Farmers
Why do some dairy farmers still persist, despite low milk prices and high costs of production?
For many farmers, the answer is because it is a family business and a part of their heritage. Ninety-seven percent of US dairy farms are family owned and operated.
Some have grown large to survive. For many others, transitioning to the next generation is a major hurdle.
The average age of all farmers in the 2022 Census of Agriculture was 58.1. Only 9 percent were considered “young farmers,” age 34 or younger. These trends are also reflected in the dairy world. Yet, only 53 percent of all producers said they were actively engaged in estate or succession planning, meaning they had at least identified a successor.
How to Help Family Dairy Farms Thrive
In theory, buying more dairy would drive up the market value of those products and influence the price producers receive for their milk. Society has actually done that. Dairy consumption has never been higher. But the way people consume dairy has changed.
Americans eat a lot, and I mean a lot, of cheese. We also consume a good amount of ice cream, yogurt, and butter, but not as much milk as we used to.
Does this mean the US should change the way milk is priced? Maybe.
The FMMO is currently undergoing reform, which may help stem the tide of dairy farmers exiting. The reform focuses on being more reflective of modern cows’ ability to produce greater fat and protein amounts; updating the cost support processors receive for cheese, butter, nonfat dry milk, and dried whey; and updating the way Class 1 is valued, among other changes. In theory, these changes would put milk pricing in line with the cost of production across the country.
The US Department of Agriculture is also providing support for four Dairy Business Innovation Initiatives to help dairy farmers find ways to keep their operations going for future generations through grants, research support, and technical assistance.
Another way to boost local dairies is to buy directly from a farmer. Value-added or farmstead dairy operations that make and sell milk and products such as cheese straight to customers have been growing. These operations come with financial risks for the farmer, however. Being responsible for milking, processing, and marketing your milk takes the already big job of milk production and adds two more jobs on top of it. And customers have to be financially able to pay a higher price for the product and be willing to travel to get it.

Insider and the nature of Marksman Snipers
Marksman Snipers are my favourite branch of my favourite job.
They're the archetypical, basic Sniper. Fast attack rate, high range and low damage per hit contrast them nicely with the Core Caster - their basic counterpart.
By itself, a Marksman Sniper is quite good at handling regular trash mobs and most ranged enemies, but will quickly hit a wall when encountering enemies with just slightly high defense.
Their skills usually improve their innate qualities, giving them more attack speed, range and/or multi-hit attacks. This only makes them better at what they're already good at.
The raw dps of someone like GreyThroat or Exusiai is phenomenal, but in practice they can't usually exact this power.
But this is what I enjoy about them. They're very compatible with being supported. Deploy Elysium and your May, GreyThroat and Archetto go from costing 10, 11 and 13 to 8, 9 and 11 and that basically already has Elysium pay for himself just by entering the field. He then also supplies an incredibly useful Def debuff for them, even if it's a bit weak.
For harder stuff, you'll bring Pramanix as well and at that point enemies have basically no def anymore. Then bring a Bard to increase your Snipers' attack, which they get a lot out of with their multi-hit attacks and watch them shred bosses! I love doing that. It's much more fun to me to see this kind of combination go off than plopping a self-sufficient, modern 6 star onto a target.
But then we have some outliers. These are May and Insider (and sorta Platinum but I don't want to talk about her.)
May and Insider look very similar. S1 is an offensive-recovery skill that gives the next (few) attacks a large damage multiplier. 200% for May, 230% for Insider. S2 is a low-cost auto-recovery skill that gives a large attack boost and has some utility benefits. +120%, 1s Slow, 30% chance to stun for 1.2s for May +130%, attack-interval reduction, reduced taunt and ranged-enemy targeting priority for Insider.
This makes both of them a lot more self-sufficient than the usual Marksman Sniper, but also worse at working with the usual support. May’s S2 happens to also carry a hefty attack interval penalty, so she outside attack buffs have less than 100% efficiency on her. Insider’s S2 doesn’t hold out for sustained fire due to its ammo-based nature so while he does fire faster than off-skill, it brings him off his skill faster too.
May's S1 also carries a powerful Slow, whereas Insider's gives him some ammo with which he hits really hard for a couple shots.
With these attack buffs/multipliers, both of these operators are able to meaningfully damage a lot more enemies than is normal for their branch, while still having their other beneficial traits (cheap to deploy, fast attacks). May's S2 is so good at slowing and has such a good uptime (20sp cost, 30s duration) that she's a better slower than most Decel Binders.
But enough about May, she's just a tangent here.
So, Insider. Like everyone else, I laughed about how he's Lightnovel Protagonist Man with his unassuming, almost uninteresting appearance. But where most people wrote him off as "just another Marksman Sniper", I ended up immediately raising him when I got him as Hortus de Escapismo's welfare. I like Marksman Snipers and have a lot of material, so why not do it.
I then used him every now and then when I felt like it, stuck with May for the most part, but over time I came to appreciate his unique qualities. Both material and personal.
His purposefully bland, yet amicable appearance is paired with a casually ruthless nature that can be quite offputting.
His "Being Operation" line is "I wish everyone could just calm down, before I raise my gun to settle things." That's his first thought about settling an uproar, pulling out his gun.
But then his "Selecting Operator 2" line is "Bullets may be fast, but they aren't always so quick to solve disputes." contradicting his previous line.
This kind of internal contradiction is a thread that goes through all of his lines.
Deployment 1 and 2 are "Chill, everyone, I'm just here for a few questions." and "If you insist on being so stubborn, then... prepare for execution." Of course, this is also "just" the progression through an investigation, questioning people and such, but the way he calmly speaks all of his lines, even when talking about these kinds of things doesn't feel great. Like, he says the second of these lines like you just told him the restaurant he wanted to go to isn't open today and he has to pick a different one. It's so casual.
His four combat lines... well, it’s best to give you a voice sample of him anyway and these are easier to listen to than read.
He just wants to do his job and „stay out of trouble“, as he puts it. He doesn’t really care about the people involved ro what ends up happening to them or if he even has to kill someone.
He’s a total professional.
The bland exteriour is all part of that.
Even his skill names allude to this: „Don’t Invite Trouble“ and „Problem Solver“.
But that’ll be enough about him as a person, let’s go over why he’s interesting and powerful as an operator. It’s pretty simple, really.
Both of his skills run on ammo.
S1 has 4, but goes up to 9 once his talent activates (20 seconds after he was deployed) and for his S1 that’s kind of a gross increase. It takes 12 sp on offensive recovery, so going from 4 to 9 shots with it is pretty impressive.
But even at 4 shots, if you think of it as a basic 3 sp single-hit skill, it still checks out.
Having a longer charge time, but firing several boosted shots in a row is both good and bad, just depends on the situation of course. This skill isn’t terribly interesting, it just does good damage. Like all ammo skills, it can be manually deactivated but since it’s offensive-recovery, there isn’t a general benefit to it, since he can’t charge it while idle anyway, short of specific circumstances.
His S2 also runs on ammo and gives him 14/19 shots on a 20sp auto-recovery cost.
This makes it really efficient. It also reduces his attack interval to 0.7s, so he can fire those shots within 10/13 seconds, giving it both high damage per hit and fast firing rate, at the cost of the ammo being a bit of a downside when he has to chew through large health pools.
If you’re diligent about canceling the skill when he’s done with his target, it’ll pretty much be up whenever you need it.
The reduced taunt is nice, but not a big deal.
What’s really important is his targeting priority modification that comes with this skill.
Because what it’s really made for is assassinating high-threat ranged enemies.
With the +130% atk from his skill he goes to ~1440 atk, which is enough to meaningfully damage just about any ranged enemy. With the attack interval reduction, he goes through his shots quickly (unlike May, whose interval increase on her S2 offsets the attack buff quite significantly with regards to raw dps).
Ranged enemies are often important targets, but they can be difficult to get at.
They might move within a group of other enemies who distract your ranged operators or just stand at some location for a while, giving them low regular priority as well.
There are other ways of dealing with them, like dropping an Executor (not the Sniper) on them, using a Deadeye Sniper (low-def targeting) or using operators who deal aoe damage or narrow their range to shoot directly at a certain spot.
But all of these can run into issues. Deadeyes get distracted by chumpy trash mobs with no defense, Executors might just die from trying to take out this critical enemy or ground tiles might be limited.
But simply prioritizing ranged enemies is widely useful and reliable.
Do you know who else has this specific targeting priority?
Adnachiel. That’s it. It’s Adnachiel or Insider and Adnachiel... well he’s not bad, but he is just a 3 star Marksman Sniper at the end of the day.
His skill is ATK Up Alpha.
So next time some ranged enemy is being a right pain, maybe you’ll remember Insider and borrow him from someone. Or raise him, cause I doubt anyone has him as a support unit.
Among other materials, he notably wants 5 Sugar and 32 Sugar Packs for fully raising him. 15 Sugar Packs for E2 alone, so buy him some donuts to put all that sugar on. He’s into it.
Oh also raise May. She's a gun*-totin' rootin' tootin' cutien' patootin' (???) and is good to have. She's a four star, she's basically free to raise.
