I really don't get big companies making limited editions. Just make more?
#everything is limited edition in the grand scheme of things#one day they're going to discontinue a generic figurine or plushie or whatever and you'll have#resellers listing them for disgustingly high prices because they are supposedly rare now#dont let that shiny “only a 1000 made!” label coax you into buying something you don't truly want#not unicorn of the day

Would kill to read animal POV fiction that has the animal POV’s interaction with humans be like, semi realistic to the level of caution most predators take with large prey and/or competitors (including humans).
Like instead of the usual - “the human is such a weak, pathetic creature... so slow, no claws, blunt teeth… completely helpless without its 'Fire Sticks'. how is it the master of the earth?” type crap it’s like, the bear protagonist or whatever approaches some dude who spreads their arms and yells and the bear is like “FUUUUUUUUCK THAT THING JUST GOT HUGE. IT'S LARGE AND MAKING NOISES. HOLY FUCK.”
#A lot of this realm of fiction tends to severely overestimate how physically weak humans are in the grand scheme of things..#A human body ft. no tools has a pretty average level competency at escaping predation. WITH tools it's significantly above average.#Like a lot of human physiology IS the way it is because of reliance on tool/fire use but interspecies competition/predation is really not#a literal battle won by physical strength + teeth + claws (at least until the actual process of killing)#Intimidation and shows of strength/threatening behavior can go a long way. Healthy predators (who aren't unnaturally#accommodated to humans) are generally going to be cautious and may avoid confrontations they absolutely COULD win because#the risk of injury is judged as too high#And most animals can't weigh risks in the most objective manner and won't understand that you aren't any 'bigger' just because you#wave your arms and yell. That is why puffing up/spreading out as a threat display is so ubiquitous in nature.#Massive tangent but this is why I fucking loved Prehistoric Planet so much like the commitment to having its dinosaurs behave like#actual animals is fantastic and tragically rare#Like having a scene where a T Rex gets bullied away from a carcass by two much smaller azhdarchids.. Yeah that is probably#how it would behave. It's not a mindless killing machine it's an animal so is going to avoid confrontations it deems too risky even if it#WOULD win in an all out brawl. thank you so fucking muych.

Wild how we know that Elizabeth Woodville was officially appointed to royal councils in her own right during her husband’s reign and fortified the Tower of London in preparation of a siege while 8-months pregnant and had forces gathering at Westminster “in the queen’s name” in 1483 – only for NONE of these things to be even included, let alone explored, in the vast majority of scholarship and historical novels involving her.
#lol I don't remember writing this - I found it when I was searching for something else in my drafts. But it's 100% true so I had to post it.#elizabeth woodville#my post#Imo this is mainly because Elizabeth's negative historiography has always involved both vilification and diminishment in equal measure.#and because her brand of vilification (femme fatale; intriguer) suggests more indirect/“feminine” than legitimate/forceful types of power#It's still bizarre though-you'd think these would be some of the most famous & defining aspects of Elizabeth's life. But apparently not#I guess she only matters when it comes to marrying Edward and Promoting Her Family and scheming against Richard#There is very lacking interest in her beyond those things even in her traditionally negative depictions#And most of her “reassessments” tend to do diminish her so badly she's rendered utterly irrelevant and almost pathetic by the end of it#Even when some of these things *are* mentioned they're never truly emphasized as they should be.#See: her formal appointment in royal councils. It was highly unconventional + entirely unprecedented for queens in the 14th & 15th century#You'd think this would be incredibly important and highlighted when analyzing late medieval queenship in England but apparently not#Historians are more willing to straight-up INVENT positions & roles for so many other late medieval queens/king's mothers that didn't exist#(not getting into this right now it's too long...)#But somehow acknowledging and discussing Elizabeth's ACTUAL formally appointed role is too much for them I guess#She's either subsumed into the general vilification of her family (never mind that they were known as 'the queen's kin' to actual#contemporaries; they were defined by HER not the other way around) or she's rendered utterly insignificant by historians. Often both.#But at the end of the day her individual role and identity often overlooked or downplayed in both scenarios#and ofc I've said this before but - there has literally never been a proper reassessment of Elizabeth's role in 1483-85 TILL DATE#despite the fact that it's such a sensational and well-known time period in medieval England#This isn't even a Wars of the Roses thing. Both Margaret of Anjou and Margaret Beaufort have had multiple different reassessments#of their roles and positions during their respective crises/upheavals by now;#There is simply a distinct lack of interest in reassessing Elizabeth in a similar way and I think this needs to be acknowledged.#Speaking of which - there's also a persistent habit of analyzing her through the context of Margaret of Anjou or Elizabeth of York#(either as a parallel or a foil) rather than as a historical figure in HER OWN RIGHT#that's also too long to get into I just wanted to point it out because I hate it and I think it's utterly senseless#I've so much to say about how all of this affects her portrayal in historical fiction as well but that's going into a whole other tangent#ofc there are other things but these in particular *really* frustrate me#just felt like ranting a bit in the tags because these are all things that I want to individually discuss someday with proper posts...

Since you feel so strongly about Apollo in adaptations, you probably hate Lore Olympus' version 🤣
(or "Asspollo" like I call him, to distinguish the LO! Version from the actual deity)
Rightfully so btw, because he's a terrible character both morally, as a version of Apollo and even as a villain, his writing sucks.
Oh god; Lore Olympus.
Okay so full disclosure, I never finished LO because I do actually love myself and suffering through shitty greek myth adaptations is only fun for me if I can tell that the author has a point they're trying (and failing) to bring across. Lore Olympus was already failing on so many levels that by the time the Apollo assaulting Persephone thing came up and I realised it was going to be a recurring thing, I was so mentally checked out that I couldn't even be scandalised LOL
Nothing about him even remotely resembles the figure Smythe claimed him to be an interpretation of which honestly is a shame considering that I absolutely adore a villainous Apollo and he makes for an utterly terrifying antagonist when done correctly.
Like, in a vacuum, I don't even mind an 'Apollo who wishes to usurp Zeus as king' story! There's a legitimate case to be made for Apollo being born before Ares and therefore being Zeus' firstborn son. There is a legitimate conflict to be dug into about Zeus' two most favoured counsels being children from relationships outside of the one with his wife. And Apollo was honestly a massive asshole when he was a young god! He was rash and impulsive, he ran about treating the world like it already belonged to him and didn't particularly care about the people he displaced or inconvenienced in his rush to establish himself. He was insulting his fellow gods, had a ton of pride and was enough of a terror that I genuinely think the islands and coves had the right idea refusing Leto sanctuary because they were afraid Apollo would trash the place the moment he was born LMAO
If Lore Olympus meant to channel this rowdy Apollo into their mess of a character, then they also did a terrible job of that because, vitally, LO's Apollo isn't intimidating. He's written to be pathetic, self agrandising, cowardly and foolish - the kind of person that's meant to look bad in order for the protagonists to look good. Apollo as a villain should be so destructive so as to inspire fear - the kind of ruthless, focused destroyer that makes you remember that he's named not for light but for the very destruction that he's now bringing.
So like, yeah, I don't like LO! Apollo 😂 Frankly, I think of him more as like someone's pet who was named after the god rather than something that's meant to actually share any qualities with him. The actual worst thing about that little freak is that it introduced a ton of people to the concept of Apollo and now there's people who cannot divorce the image of Apollo from a vile, pathetic, idiotic rapist who cannot even gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss his way into a decent succession plot.
Also he's not pretty, not handsome, and has short hair. Waste of my damn time is what he is 🤨
#ginger answers asks#Yes yes I know there's a lot of discourse over what 'ἀπόλλυμι' actually means but the general consensus is that it means 'to destroy'#so that's just what we're going with lol#I think Apollo would be a WONDERFUL villain actually#I think more things should try to make him an antagonist#but of course it comes with the caveat of things doing his brand of villainy right#Apollo doesn't dick around with plots and schemes and metaphorical trials like his kin#he slaughters he butchers and he is glorious in the blood of those he tears asunder#Detienne says it best when he named him the Prince of Butchery#Apollo is a blood god and such a thing must never be forgotten#LO in general had the same effect for me that TSOA did#which is “ah goddamnit now people are extra mad at him because he gets in the way of their blorbos' true love or whatever”#I once had an interaction in uni where I told a guy my favourite greek god was Apollo and he judged me SO HARD for it#we ended up having a really pleasant conversation all things considered ngl - he had only ever read LO as far as greek myth things go#and I was able to clarify that I meant actual mythological Apollo#but the fact that a random Bajan guy knew Lore Olympus should let you know how truly massive that web comic is#and how much damage it thusly did to the Apollo ecosystem#when I catch you Rachel Smythe. Ooooh when I catch you Rachel Smythe#this was fun to talk about though ngl#thank you very much for the ask

never volunteer for anything university related man. also go listen to this
#first i thought oh it would just be this one poster. why not. i can do that. i have time. so i did#they told me the general aesthetic and no further details so i thought‚ oh‚ okay‚ so i can basically freestyle this. yknow‚ like an idiot#they told me to change the color scheme‚ the font‚ the color of the font too‚ pretty much redo the entire poster#and these are notes i would be getting late at night. like around 12-2am. i had to revise that poster a shitload of times and was#tired. and then i was done and i thought Welp! at least that's over!#little did i know they were actually planning for me to do MORE WORK: design diplomas/certificates and make one for all the people needed#So here i am 12 diplomas‚ 24 certificates‚ 31 letter of thanks later#all done in one person. all done in two days (deadline was until the end of the week but i couldnt start until at least thursday)#I couldnt start because they sent me the wrong list of people first. so i had to cram(heh) a lot. of hours of work in these past 2 days#Yknow at least they liked my design the first time and i didnt have to revise anything. but ohhhh the fucking. filling out the papers for#each person. absolutely daunting. especially in something like ibispaint x that doesnt have an option to align text to the center#of the canvas. which is more my fault because i am an ibispaint x user. but anyway#They sent me the correct official document. it had incomplete information because they just didnt write patronymics or grades in the#official document. so i had to go and check the first table and figure out everyone's information myself#but the thing is that‚ that table must've been written by the students/participants because stuff like Name Of University wasn't consistent#some literally wrote their school's names wrong and i had to double-check that and fix that for the certificates. fine. whatever#but remember the official document? now imagine it even MORE incomplete because there is a list of at least 10 people and just their#SURNAMES AND INITIALS. so like a digital archeologist i had to go and dig up the names and patronymics of teachers and students i've never#heard of in my fucking life. i had to ask my older friends like Hey is there any chance you know the patronymic of your groupmate thanks???#and the cherry on top. is that the Official Document has a bunch of grammatical errors in it. the most fucking basic ones.#'анастасие' instead of 'анастасии'‚ 'преподователь' instead of 'преподаватель'#so i had to look out for those TOO‚ While Tired (i almost copied the mistakes because all of my work required referencing the doc#but they couldnt even write a fucking grammatically correct or consistent doc so that's nice)#anyways i sent all 67 files and my supervisor said she will look over them 'during the evening'#I dont know what her fucking definition of evening is considering it's already 6pm. i guess i expect to be messaged at 2am once more to fix#some inconsequential bullshit#let's just say i am just a liiiiiittle bit . just sliiightly . burnt out#Call me a vessel the way im full of void but also completely hollow#alas . at least there is fanmade threat music to listen to on loop#crammerposting

i do sometimes wonder how the gang's chemistry and dynamics would shift if they actually did have to co-parent a baby because realistically none of them should have children. ever. but the idea of dropping a baby in the hands of five incredibly unqualified alcoholics is oh so very amusing to me
#the poor kid would have sooooooo many psychological issues realistically#but we dont have to be realistic here.#the gang would definitely incorporate the kid into their schemes and exploit the hell out of 'baby privileges'#like dennis in the gang goes to the water park#or dee and mac with db#or the entirety of the gang in the gang gives back#AND there's room for tons of fun actual character exploration#specifically for charlie dennis & frank because a lot of franks character has to do with wanting a legacy/son and dennis has his whole thin#with fatherhood and meeting the 'right' milestones (see his marriage to maureen and obviously the minnesota arc)#and then charlie is just. generally good with kids? like they just understand him and he gets them? and he also has a thing with fatherhood#also. to be quite honest. i just really like when the gang gets to work with kids#again i reiterate: the kid would be FUCKED UP but i still like to think about it. it's fun for me :)#fran talks#its always sunny

I actually teared up when thinking abt the horshoe crab once, like fym this organism has been existing since the Ordovician which was around 450mil years ago, they managed to survive the most decimating extinctions that man knows off, ice ages and tropical climates, Apex predators that come and gone, their lineage has been alive for so long they completed a full rotation around the Milky way Galaxy TWICE, and if you have the means you could GO and SEE IT and HOLD IT TODAY because it is still scuttling about the shores of our planet as it did for time so long it is near incomprehensible.
Through all that, they barely changed, their fossils look like they're imprints from yesterday, there's a trace fossil of a poor crab suffocating in an anoxic lagoon that is around 150mil years old and there's a full HD colored video from 2022 of a horshoe crab helping another flip from it's back for absolutely no reward or personal benefit other than helping a fellow out
#and they cannot comprehend any of it#it would be fucked up if they went exist because of humans tho I would never forgive that#but we can and thats just amazing#''inconsequential in the grand scheme of things'' everything that has ever happened in the history of ever has led to you comprehending that#that seems pretty consequtial to me#habitat loss water poisioning and humans just generally thinking they own everything#anyway not to be philosophical on main but I really do love animals and nature and have biweekly spirals over it

at the point in my life where my stance towards birthdays is just 'look, I'm really busy this month, can we reschedule this and all of the emotional baggage attached with it as well for a couple months down the line please'
#I'm about a week out from 23 and this is the first time in my life where I've actually felt my age tbh.#as a kid I befriended teachers and librarians more than peers and I was never much of a childlike kid#but as an adult I've felt like the three-kids-in-a-trenchcoat-walking-into-a-movie-theatre equivalent of an adult.#It's like impostor syndrome with my own age. always a little too much or not quite enough.#but 23 feels like you put those opposing notions in a blender. you mix it together and it's like Yep That's 23 All Right.#it's weird looking at my friends that are my age though.#some people my age are settling down and having careers and kids and others are joining pyramid schemes and dating The Worst Man#so overall I guess I'm doing okay for myself here in the middle. my life is painfully aimless but I'm not dating The Worst Man#and I'm not selling vector knives or keto diet plans on tiktok so I've at least made a few good decisions along the way I guess.#like never downloading tiktok lol. god that's another thing. that makes me feel old. I don't get tiktok but anyways. back to 23.#there's just this constant 'you're almost in your mid-twenties. you should be doing more' kind of feeling that I never quite know-#-what to do with.#like you're just waiting for it to all click together but the clicker's jammed.#the economy and job market is also just fucked which isn't helping much.#too young for financial stability or a stable career. too old for the dissonant solace of younger generations' apathetic nihilism.#the perfect age to remember Windows XP and Colbie Calliat I guess.#comforting.

There are few things I think about all the time, and one of them is the cold open rant Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) went on about America not being the greatest country in the world in The Newsroom; particularly his hilarious point of “if liberals are so fucking smart how come they lose so goddamn always?” Aaron Sorkin really did something with that statement because yeah, we’ve got a history of fucking losing
#and as a dem/liberal myself the comedy is in his point about how conservatives make generally incorrect statements#but liberals can’t pull their heads out of their asses and so many particular#minuscule points that don’t matter in the grand scheme that we just lose because we’re focusing on the wrong things#I LOVE this speech and everything it stands for#Aaron Sorkin is a film and script genius and I wish him eternal life#the newsroom#Aaron Sorkin#and NO this is NOT an invitation for republicans to interact idc what you have to say ignore this post it’s not meant for you

Hey y'all! I could use some advice, because when I developed asthma my family pretty much got rid of all our cleaning products besides like dish soap and clorox wipes for asthma trigger reasons, just using soap and water and elbow grease to clean things, but to be honest I just don't have that much elbow grease available. The fatigue is real lol That said, I am looking for your cleaning product recommendations (for cleaning anything! absolutely anything, just tell me what it's for please) in two categories: 1. What works best, regardless of asthma side effects or whether or not I personally can use it* 2. What you think will work for me, if you have any asthma-friendly cleaning product suggestions *I am not the only person in my household so if the cleaning product works really well but I can't be around it we can make it work
#the person behind the yarn#tj asks weird questions#this question isn't that weird but that's my tag for these#today I scrubbed the stovetop#and it took a long time and it's still not perfectly clean#and I could only clean one of the grates and my arm and chest are sore from holding it one handed#so I could clean with the other hand#and like. I realize in the scheme of things this is a relatively minor problem#but it's been like six years since I developed asthma it's long past time to figure out a better way of cleaning#the main labor intensive things I am hoping to find more specific cleaning products for#are the stove the oven and like bathroom cleaners#but any general cleaning products would be awesome too

i think its some of damiens responsiblity to think what kinda relationship he cultivaded with his fans. and why is centering his need for explaning, defending and further protecting his self/image is his knee jerk reaction. unless you do those things a social media break is just another way of image management. plus it wont feel better when you come back and you are still centering your image which causes you too act defensive/childish. you cant support things thru acts of fear and nervousness and not expact them to crumble! i know people joked abour his virtue signalling in the past, and they are jokes, but its a curious thing people notice that around him enough to point that out. i hope he can actually look into that part of himself with a more honest critical lense.also these twitch stream where he wants this magicaly ''positive'' enviroment where people can ''escape'' is just unrealistic at best. this is a livestream where people rush on each other to talk to you. its by nature feeding into these things im afraidi positivity is not the warm blanket you think it is, its more of a trap lol
#some thoughts#blocking fans in general is a very emotional but stupid move lol(to me) as a somewhat public figure he must understand that block feature i#practically useless to him other than get his frustration out maybe for a minute? then what?#it only creates a snowball effect.#idk its feels counterproductive altho i can still understand where the frustration is coming from#stan twitter can be nasty. getting cussed by 17 year old with no emotional regulation and too much time lol#anyways this is absolutely not about him having the perfect response/apology.. that'll happen and idc about pr managing his reactions lol#also personally i dont find the joke much of a big deal. its whatever. lazy lowblow at worst#he just needs to be realistic about his internet presence and how it interacts with his defensive/nervous personality#and in grand scheme of things the way he interacts with ''activism''.. its not for him/about him.#at the end this reaction is a part of him! he can do what he will with that#hope he has people around him that can be critical about his intentions/reactions without it being taken as a personal attack

Something super valuable about studying history, especially back into ancient times is having an appreciation for how enduring humanity is. Like yeah yeah in the cosmic or geologic or evolutionary schemes we're insignificant, but we have also been through a lot, of our own making and of nature just throwing shit at us. When you think of history as extending back to before modern conceptions of a state or people or culture, and extend your definition of society to more than what resembles nation-states and continental empires, you realize we have been everywhere for very long time, and its hard to really imagine an earth without us.
Even if everything gets fucked to shit by late-stage capitalism or like some random disaster people will live on. Maybe not in super-consumerist mega societies, but there will still be idiots gathering around a fire somewhere to laugh at each others jokes, someone playing with their pet. People will still want to sing and make images on the wall and imagine things. People have lived under wraps of lovingly made cloths in deserts, peoples have lived proudly on horseback on rolling steps, people have found peace and community living in flooding rainforests, people have just been making it even in what may seem to be extreme conditions. So many cultures tell of surviving a world-ending flood, so many cultures declared themself the endstate of history only to become chapters in our textbooks - we fucking endure!
And realizing that even these extremes of societal and ecological collapse have been endured, I can be kinda chill about the fact that nothing will ever be over so we should never actually stop trying to hold together. Holding together doesn't have to mean keeping up an incredibly wasteful and/or inefficient society, it just means doing our best to survive and help those around us. This is not to dismiss the massive amounts of human suffering that come with societal upheaval, but as I am trying to say, focus on helping your neighbor instead of woeing over that which was always destined to fall beginning to fall.
People are more valuable than concepts. Be kind to yourself and others. And uh. If America or something collapses press F to pay respects and think about the cool mythology we'll get to invent about it.
#been thinking too about how ive heard the much of western european thought focuses on history as progress#while elsewhere you get the idea of history as cycle which is so much more accurate#not that society does not build on itself but “progress” implies an end point which will never happen#you can just make each cycle a bit more bearable a bit more humane#the us especially is such a young country in the grand scheme of things built on both some awesome ideals and some massive sins#nothing was ever meant to be forever but maybe it uh was really not meant to bes for so longs#idk maybe im just paranoid but im just thinking about how cooooked my generation is for this culture#but not for this world! very important there will always be a place for people#just not always the concepts we come up with like capitalism lol#shut the heck up#midnight rambles#sometimes i realize its a midnight ramble at the end like i look at the clock and im like --#-- “yeah i wouldnt have typed this at 3pm this afternoon”#history#i love my history books literally everyone ever is in it#its also very long#what do you mean this is a fandom blog?#not fandom
