“Unearthing Buried Gods.” Michael McGrath
Michael McGrath Summons Symbolism and a Folk Art Style in Expressive Paintings
November 6, 2024
Art
Kate Mothes
From fanged cats and all-seeing ravens to anthropomorphized botanicals and disembodied faces, Michael McGrath’s uncanny works nod to the symbol-rich, flat compositions of folk art or “naïve” painting. His mixed-media works combine materials like graphite, oil paint and oil stick, ink, and acrylic on a variety of surfaces, including wood, canvas, and burlap.
Inspired by the expansive scenes of contemporary artists Peter Doig and Mamma Andersson, and self-taught artists Henry Darger (1892-1973) and William Hawkins (1895-1990), McGrath harnessed a narrative approach in his own practice. “I decided to experiment with figures and storytelling in my painting,” he tells Colossal. He also counts Jim Henson among his influences.
Tumblr media
“Threats and competition for tiny vampires” (2023), graphite, colored pencil, and India ink on wood panel, 14 x 11 inches
Populated with an array of characters, from trees with alarmed expressions to tiny, fairy-like black critters with bulbous wings and long legs, McGrath delves into mysterious, emotional tales with plots as enigmatic as they are supernatural.
The artist’s interest in painting evolved from an early fascination with design, especially album covers and advertising in magazines like Spin and Thrasher. “I never had the patience to develop classical skills, so I focused on dimensional and collage work for a while, until I eventually decided to invest more time in painting,” he says.
McGrath’s work will be part of an online group show with MePaintsMe, Slight of Hand, which opens on November 12. In February, he will also have pieces on view in a group show at Court Tree Collective in Brooklyn.

Tumblr media
“Hunting songs” (2024), oil, oil stick, and grease pencil on linen, 30 x 24 inches
Tumblr media
“Muppet moon nightmare choir” (2024), acrylic, acrylic yarn, embroidery thread, painted canvas, and burlap on burlap, 40 x 30 inches

Trinkets, Worthless, 10: These trinket are garbage plain and simple. They would be termed vendor trash or junk loot in video games. They aren’t touched by stray magic or mystery as with regular trinkets, aren’t made from valuable materials and aren’t particularly useful even if they aren’t damaged.
A burlap bag containing a dozen assorted doorknobs.
A rather large and dead hairy spider that looks as if someone tried to make a wig out of it.
A small beige oilcloth sack embroidered neatly with the word ‘CHEESE.’ You can smell it from halfway across the room.
An expertly taxidermied rat with a built in candle holder capable of bearing a small tea candle. The mouse is posed as if scurrying
A lump of coal with runes carved into it.
A five pound pyrite (Fools gold) ingot.
A worn minotaur’s nose ring that has been bent and beaten back into shape many times.
A lacquered wooden coin engraved with the holy symbol of a minor God of Random Neutral Domain.
A smooth, flat, black river stone.
A small, tattered canvas sack containing a dozen half-rotted teeth that are as long as a thumb, but are decidedly identifiable as human.
—Keep reading for 90 more trinkets.
—Note: The previous 10 items are repeated for easier rolling on a d100.

A lacquered wooden coin engraved with the holy symbol of a minor God of Random Neutral Domain.
A smooth, flat, black river stone.
A small, tattered canvas sack containing a dozen half-rotted teeth that are as long as a thumb, but are decidedly identifiable as human.
A single feather hanging from a chain of slender twigs reminiscent of a bird’s nest.
A dull-red, cloth pouch filled with five pounds of finely ground, rust flakes.
A pair of minotaur horns, which were well used by their original owner.
A tangled mess of metal wires fused together with heat and attached to a wooden plaque. It may be a worthless mess of twisted scrap metal or a priceless piece of inspired artwork.
A heavily used hand cranked wood drill that creaks loudly when used.
A foggy hand mirror that when cleaned, immediately fogs back up.
A cracked and weathered hourglass that only has some sand remaining
A battered leather satchel filled with dried red beans.
A fishing hook that cannot be bent.
A large tin canister whose lid is crudely stamped with the word “JURKY”, which contains dozens of sticks of meat jerky. Any creature can clearly identify the jerky as “meat” but as to the exact animal the dried “food” came from, (If it is only from a single species of animal) is impossible to tell.
A battered stone shaped like a heart.
A child's wooden doll that makes whoever looks at it uncomfortable.
A cloth sack packed to the brim with cat fur.
A cloth sack packed to the brim with dog fur.
A flat, round, dark gray stone speckled with reddish flecks, and about six inches across.
A sewing thimble that, when poked by a needle, will roughly squeeze the bearer's thumb.
A small brass key.
A hand mirror with a horn handle. Instead of actually functioning correctly, the mirror reflects all creature's image as a specific bald human of unknown origin.
A very roughly drawn map of the surrounding area. A knowledgeable creature is able to tell that the map is not to scale and is barely useable for actual navigation.
A spindly iron key.
A chipped nautilus shell.
A moth eaten, gray velvet clutch purse.
A fairly convincing but ultimately inaccurate map, with a single red dot marking “You are here”.
An old scratched up lyre, strung with well-worn cat gut strings.
A Random Humanoid Race’s rotting, severed head.
A crudely made staff topped by a small skull.
An uneven, gnarled length of wood from a grotesque tree.
An old and cracked velum scroll whose script has been rendered illegible by the ravages of time.
A simple, springy rod made of twisting vines and twigs.
A rotting wooden goblet filled with a festering brew of pus, blood, wriggling maggots and worms that spill from the froth on the liquid's surface.
A dusty old pair of half-moon glasses of such a strong prescription that they are unwearable for most creatures.
A cracked glass jar containing a crudely removed bear claw.
A poorly embroidered handkerchief with the words “I love you dad” crudely stitched into it.
A red, child sized, fuzzy blanket that smells of mold and mildew.
A desiccated hoof that once belonged to a large, male elk.
A simple dusty scroll has no marking, seal nor text on it. By all appearances, it is a standard sheet of writing material that is bound by a single hemp thread.
A stone jar of filled with acid. The jar's lid is badly fitting, and the acid bubbles and froths as it moves. The object's sole markings are a skull symbol resting overtop of a warning written in Dwarvish.
A bedroll that is covered in a large, dark stain, but is in otherwise fair condition.
A set of crude fishing supplies, including a box of maggots, several bent hooks and a ten foot length of wire.
A set of clothes, appearing halfling in size and design. They appear partially burnt and have a large, black stain on the chest.
A primitive woolen bag filled with bones.
A rough bag full of leaves and stems of an unknown plant.
A crude animal cage. Inside there are two dead rats a dead bat and a large number of healthy maggots feeding on the aforementioned corpses.
A badly water damaged book whose pages cannot be read.
A set of badly maintained scientific instruments, including a compass, measuring rods, quills and ink. With some repair, they could form a cartographer's toolkit.
A humanoid skull that has been cleaned and bleached white. It has a large, drilled hole in the center of the crown and several abyssal symbols are crudely carved into the temples.
A long clock hand of dark metal, the end raggedly pointed and stained with old blood.
A dusty glass bottle that still holds a few drops of viscous red liquid.
A page torn from a hymnal book dedicated to a god of war.
A clay tablet with indecipherable symbols.
A padlock that any key can open.
A bundle of crumpled papers, each having a partially completed love poem on them. Most of the words are scribbled out and are illegible, but the intended recipient appears to be a woman by the name of Neurelia.
The skull of a bird with an iron nail driven through it.
A crude wooden mask featuring a head crest of branches. The entirety of the mask is scorched wood and it smells like charcoal.
A beaten crate filled with rotted children’s clothing and old toys.
An alligator skull that reeks of sulfur and bog water. The druidic rune for “Preserve” is carved into the forehead.
A stone statue of a goblin, paper-thin and hollow. If the statue is broken, goblin bones tumble out.
A rusty dagger with a blade that is wildly unsuited for any sort of cutting whatsoever. Dangling from the pommel-nut is a leather thong strung with teeth and walnut shells.
A latticed or deformed stone that's possibly a meteorite
A malformed doll with a strange leer that wears a sackcloth dress.
A stitched up bear composed of multiple parts from different teddy bears.
A lady’s brush, elegantly carved of ivory with boar bristle. The ivory is stained and cracked, and many of the bristles are missing.
A hefty book full of notes written by many authors and inserted pages from other books. There are bite marks and slashes on the covers and some dirt might slip from between the pages when shaken.
A wizard's spellbook that was enchanted to repel liquids. Unfortunately, the enchantment is so strong that the pages cannot be written on rendering it completely unusable.
A reasonably shiny pebble.
A plank of wood whose knots and grain, crudely (At best) depict a lesser known deity of Random Domain.
A corroded metal cylinder bearing forbidden writing. The runic script bears little coherence, appearing like mad ramblings about the things beyond.
A set of brass lockpicks that couldn't possibly fit into any known style of lock.
A sheaf of poorly rendered sketches made by children.
A torn flag of an ancient city long since fallen into ruin.
A dissected and flayed corpse of a tiny fey creature.
A syringe with a squared-off crystal barrel. The plunger, flange, and needle hardware are nickel alloy ornately etched in twining, serpentine coils. Though it has no needle, and the plunger no longer seals, it is finely made, given its age.
A rotting quarterstaff made of oak wood. The staff has grips wrapped in slimy brown ape skin.
An old pair of trousers that are almost entirely made of patches and stitches, having been kept in service long past their time.
A crooked rod of dark wood with a possum skull lashed to the top.
An antique sword, rusted to its mildewy scabbard.
A length of heavy rusty chain, entangled in an impossible knot.
A thick waxy candle the colour of sickly pallid skin. When burned, the smoky odor of roasting ghoulflesh fills the room, ideal for setting the mood for foul necromantic rituals, preparing volunteers for human sacrifice, and all manner of depraved acts involving corpses.
A large bird's nest that has human finger bones woven into it.
A thick shirt of coarse brown horsehair.
A small leather pouch containing a double handful of seemingly fresh tree nuts, still in their shells.
An ugly gray wine skin, heavier than it looks, sloshes and gurgles in response to any movement.
A large, cast pewter vial containing a quantity of strangely textured sand. It clumps and sticks in a single doughy mass.
A piece of parchment bearing an unusual symbol drawn in iridescent green ink.
A long and tangled piece of twine with tiny brass bells knotted into it every few feet.
A dingy, brown leather collar with a sea serpent branded along its length is stuck on a jagged piece of splintered wood.
An intricate and spiky ball of cat and rat whiskers.
A heavy shot glass with a cat's face carved into the bottom.
A copper coin with a small hole drilled at the top and attached to a long length of fishing line.
A small, stained sack with a crudely painted figure of a halfling on the side. Opening the sack releases an odour that invokes tears and gagging to those nearby. The sack itself contains a number of crude items designed to disguise a goblin as a halfling. Laying the kit’s inventory out on the ground, you assess its value as a tool for subterfuge and determine a figure of zero. The wig leaves an odor of wet dog on your hands. The goblin disguise kit contains the following items: a chopped and damp wig made from worg fur, flesh-toned paste that burns when applied, a set of incomprehensibly disgusting false teeth, a canvas tunic with a poorly painted “shirt front,” and a pair of greasy gloves.

How do I photograph jewelry for online sales?
You should include multiple photos of jewelry pieces in each product listing. One should include the piece on a plain background and at least one other should show what it looks like on a model. Make sure the jewels are clean and shiny. But avoid using a flash and keep the light even using reflectors to avoid glare in images.
Here are more business photography tips.

Linoleum Flooring Is Cheaper But Can Last Up To 4 Decades
Linoleum Flooring Is Cheaper But Can Last Up To 4 Decades
Linoleum also known as Lino in short is a floor covering material made from solidified linseed oil, saw dust, ground cork dusk, pine resin and other mineral fillers.
It mostly had a background made of canvas or burlap. Desired colour finish was achieved by adding pigments.
Commercially it has been replaced by vinyl flooring sheets however it is still in use in large parts of the world including UK.
It is also known as “inlaid” which is joining solid pieces of linoleum.
It comes in different gauges and grades and printed thinner layers are used to bring special effects.
Linoleum flooring is used in places where rigid materials are likely to crack.
The flooring has great resiliency and can last for about 4 decades.
You can install this flooring where flooring materials like wood or tiles would not work.
3d grass flower epoxy flooring is the latest addition to a bevy of flooring options and it can make your living room a flowery garden, or a fast flowing riverbed, an oasis in your drawing room or a deep blue sea effect in your bedroom.
Process of forming this 3d epoxy flooring is started with a self leveling primer which is followed by the required image.
This is then treated with a two component transparent epoxy to give depth to the image. Final step in the process is applying a level of varnish for protection.
The 3D grass flower epoxy flooring as the name suggests can create a high depth garden, sea, marine life, forest, swimming pool, galaxy etc.
it is a novel way of decorating your floors and it can last up to 2 decades.  The flooring may typically cost between $30 and $100 per square meter.
Floors can be covered by different types of tiles and they could be ceramic or porcelain tiles, and luxury vinyl tiles or planks.
Ceramic tiles are widely used to achieve water proof, glossy and even surfaced floors in both domestic and commercial environment.
This is also a cheaper option of Floor Tiles Ghana and has riches of colors, patterns, designs, styles and textures to offer.
Ceramic tiles are strong, durable and all room flooring and can last for up to 50-60 years if well maintained.
The flooring is also easy to clean and simple water and mop cleaning will make it dirt and dust free.
It has great water resistant qualities which also makes it a perfect bathroom or kitchen match.

Heavy Duty Waterproof Thick Tarpaulins
Almost all tarpaulins are thick, but the most commonly used are heavyweight canvas tarps. Thick, heavy-weight canvas tarps are extensively used as wraps for manufacturing, landscaping, warehousing, painting, farming, construction, and shipping. For maximum performance, these are made from high-quality cotton canvas duck that is 100 percent industrial grade.  These sheets have a long history in the apparel industry and are noted for their toughness and durability.  These are eco-friendly, breathable, and exceptionally durable, with excellent stitching, double-folded hems, and brass tie-down grommets. They come in a variety of sizes, weights, colours, and grades.  These are heavier than poly tarps and have various protective features. They are commonly used as sacks, flooring covers, equipment covers, and industrial containers.  These are advised for outdoor usage because they discolour inside furniture and things if they are not properly maintained, stored, and cared for.  These tarps can provide exclusive coverage for a range of critical functions, including waterproof, ultra-reliable tarps that can readily protect high-value work equipment, provide top-tier performance when used as a source of short inclusion, and provide exterior assurance during house improvements.

 These Heavy Duty tarpaulins are wax-processed and chemically treated to make them lighter.  These are utilised as industrial coverings, offshore, oil field, ship building, scaffolding, and general equipment covers because they are strong and have reinforced edges and double stitching for tie down application.  These tarps are ideal for covering equipment and freight on a building site or in an industrial setting.  These covers are used by transportation companies to protect cargo and other items from bad weather like downpours, extreme cold, hot seasons, and heavy snowfall.  These covers are reusable, and one of their many advantages is that they can be used by a variety of vehicle groups because they can be cared for efficiently and used to protect items and carry them safely with the help of these covers.  These tarps are ideal for covering equipment and cargo on a construction site or in an industrial setting.  These are also ideal for use as truck coverings for hauling agricultural items such as wood shavings or bedding supplies.
 These tarps are used to cover a variety of outdoor products, including BBQ grills, boats, firewood, automobiles, motorbikes, recreational vehicles, and transportable goods.  These coverings are employed to manage large amounts of nursery waste like leaves or a yard such as grass or any vegetable in a bad climate such as a storm.  These are used to cover shrubs in the winter to protect them from snow, road salt, and ice.  These can protect a full crop because they are vinyl coated and keep water out while the burlap protects.  These sheets are used to preserve wood shavings and firewood from abrasion and mould. Inspired by the wilderness advocate Edward Abbey, I have spent the past four years creating work around the nexus of recreation and stewardship. I have devoted myself to exploring the relationship between humans and nature as well as facilitating dialogue about human encroachment of public lands. Overcrowding of natural areas is a problem of increasing importance in today’s world. According to the National Park Service, visitation to national parks reached 327.5 million visits in 2019, the fifth consecutive year where visits exceeded 300 million (National Park Service, 2020, para. 1).
Just like visitors from all over the world, I am drawn to these wild places in search of adventure. While I feel most alive in the wilderness, I am conflicted about wanting to visit these natural spaces for I know they face many threats, of which humankind is most imminent. As the popularity of outdoor recreation increases so do the negative effects of tourism.
This past summer I had the wonderful opportunity to engage visitors in dialogue about the impact we have on nature through Paradise Lost, a solo exhibition at Art Lab Fort Collins. The opening piece of art was Grand Teton, an idyllic landscape painting of Grand Teton National Park on three panels (see Fig. 1). Completely void of any evidence of humans, the triptych elevates the national park to a sacred place and suggests an altar piece that commands a holy reverence. Introducing the human figure, the subsequent painting creates a sense of solitude by portraying a single person dwarfed by the towering Hallett Peak of Rocky Mountain National Park.
Next the painting Point Reyes features a single lighthouse on the edge of a brilliant blue ocean on Point Reyes National Seashore (see Fig. 2). Small in scale when compared to the vast ocean and open sky, the artifact of human development may appear of little consequence. Yet, the lighthouse very subtly hints at a human history of developing the land and conquering the seas. Each of these pieces create an ideal image with little to no evidence of human presence when the reality is that these are all heavily visited places.
Then the exhibition transitioned to meticulously hand-embroidered patches. The first four patches were Merit Badges for following the “Leave No Trace” principles by refraining from feeding cute chipmunks, picking beautiful wildflowers, and inadvertently causing wildfires. In contrast, the next four patches were Demerit Badges for failing to practice outdoor ethics. Off Trail captures a hiking boot in mid-air about to crush a precious flower and Noise Pollution warns of a backpacker bombarded by sound waves.
These small patches depict what have become common, everyday problems caused by too many park visitors not respecting nature or others. Displayed on the wall was the quote “wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of human spirit, as vital to our lives as bread and water” (Abbey, 1988, p. 165).
Corresponding to the Demerit Badges were wall hangings. I sew and weave wall hangings with topographical imagery that map the human impact on the natural world and provoke discussion about socially responsible practices. The weaving Erosion shows the negative effects of the patch Off Trail. The very loosely woven twine looks as though it may fall apart at any given moment. The weft alternates between white cloth with imagery of green topographical lines and burlap with imagery of red scars, where visitors have veered off trail.
The wall hanging Sounds of Northern Colorado combines fiber art and photos with a QR code. In our day-to-day lives, we are constantly bombarded by sounds and noises, most of which we block out as we go about our busy days. By incorporating a QR code that viewers can scan to listen to a playlist of recordings, my work invites the viewer to slow down and pay attention to the sounds of nature and civilization.
All of these sounds are a part of my personal experience. Yet, they speak to a larger issue, in fact, a global issue. The sounds of nature are becoming rarer. Instead we are faced with the noise of civilization, air traffic and sirens. Even the park system and the wilderness are unable to provide the escape, silence and peace of mind that they once did.
Lining the window, papier-mâché sculptures of cairns echo this idea that humans struggle with leaving nature be (see Fig. 3-4). Cairns pose a major threat to national parks as more and more people moving and stacking rocks disrupts ecosystems. Not only do people stack rocks, but they also leave graffiti on them. This is evident in the painting depicting a rock with the words “eat pizza” written on it. Another painting of a trail post reveals a no unicorns sticker above a no bicycles sign. While some may find it funny, vandalism is costly to national parks.
Even park visitors who strive to leave no trace may not consider how social media “sharing drives visitors to national parks and causes congestion in places that are valued for their seclusion. The life-size painting of hands holding a camera phone about to snap a picture invites viewers to see themselves as the one holding the phone. The contemporary experience of nature through digital devices is further emphasized by a painting of an outstretched arm snapping a selfie. Viewers may begin to question their role in nature and consider how social media “sharing” may be to the detriment of the natural places they are seeking to capture.
Devices, screens, and windows present a barrier that prevents an authentic experience of nature and narrows one’s view. Bison Jam puts the viewer inside a car looking at a herd of bison blocking the road and raises the question of whether that road should exist (see Fig. 5). The Altar showcases an assortment of gift shop items blocking the window and obscuring a view of Rocky Mountain National Park (see Fig. 5).
Consumerism of nature has become the focus instead of revering it as Grand Teton called for at the beginning of the exhibition. My paintings span from untouched landscapes to those seen through screens and windshields; they lead viewers to analyze their own relationships with nature and often evoke a feeling of uncertainty at how to proceed in natural spaces.
A display of the quote “Industrial Tourism is a threat to national parks” set the stage for the signature piece of the exhibition – Overcrowded (see Fig. 6-7) (Abbey, 1988, p.65). Transparent panels combine tent fabric with hand-painted scenes of a busy campground. Windows in the panels allow viewers to glimpse a hopeful scene of a valley of bison untouched by human presence in Yellowstone National Park. Enticing viewers to an idyllic landscape that can only be reached by walking through panels depicting human activity, my installation work creates a space for viewers to examine the dichotomies between the human desire to preserve the wilderness and to enjoy it. The final quote read “we must make up our minds and decide for ourselves what the national parks should be and what purpose they should serve” (Abbey, 1988, p. 62).
The exhibition included supplementary programming that brought both my own experience and the viewers’ shared experiences with nature into question. Local Scouts performed a skit of the “Leave No Trace” principles (see Fig. 8). Immediately following I lead an art making activity in which scouts made stickers that could count toward requirements for an Art Scout badge. At another event, a Rocky Mountain National Park ranger came and engaged the public in a conversation about outdoor ethics (see Fig. 9). Afterwards I shared my artmaking process and the story of Paradise Lost in an artist talk. Visitors could take a piece of art home with them by picking out a free handmade sticker (see Fig. 10).

WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF TOTE BAGS?
-THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TOTE BAG
WHERE DID THE WORD "TOTE" COME FROM?
The word "tote" as in "to carry" can be traced back to the 17th century. It was a time of great exploration, political unrest all over Europe, and new scientific ideas proposed by innovators like Isaac Newton. With many nations interacting for the first time, words like "tote" were adapted into the modern language. In fact, "tote" actually derives from the Swahili word "tuta," which means "to pile up or carry."
WHO INVENTED THE TOTE BAG?
We may see custom tote bags all over the place today, but they weren't officially born until the 19th century. In 1886, newspaper owner Jasper Meek came up with an idea that would keep his printing presses running during the slow season. He approached a local shoe store called Cantwell Shoes in Coshocton, Ohio and suggested printing "Cantwell's Fine Shoes" on burlap bags.
These totes served as free giveaways for every customer who came into the store. Children in the small town reused these bags to bring books to and from school. Other parents would see this and wonder how they could get one of their own, driving more customers to the small store. This kind of recognition benefited both Meek and Cantwell, and just like that, promotional tote bags were born!
Now, in present day, these eco-friendly totes are available in a wide variety of colors and images. From subtle political expression to pop culture symbols, literally anything can be printed on these bags. The flexible material also makes it possible to customize to suit your personal sense of fashion and needs.
WHEN DID TOTE BAGS BECOME POPULAR?
Custom tote bags were made popular thanks to Meek, but it still took some time for them to become mainstream items. In 1944, Maine-based company L.L. Bean introduced its "ice bag," which was a stylish way to carry ice and wood. The Boat and Tote® was made of canvas and to this day is one of the company's most popular items, with over a half million sold each year. The bag has evolved from its 1944 edition to include many different colors, a variety of sizes, and different handle lengths and materials. Today, the navy and red straps are the company's best-sellers, with new seasonal colors coming out every six months.
The Boat and Tote ushered in a new wave of tote bags as practical accessories. For the first time, people were entertaining the idea of using them to carry everything from groceries to fishing gear. By 1991, L.L. Bean also got into personalization by including a monogram of their initials on each bag. This helped promote their company, while also offering customers something practical and trendy.business backpack

Trinkets, 22: Interesting baubles, semi magical objects and items touched by mystery.
A small, Randomly Colored folded paper bird. When unfolded, it refolds itself and any crumples or tears it has sustained magically fix themselves.
An eyepatch resembling a large flower that covers the entire eye of the creature wearing it. When applied to a creature’s face, the eyepatch grows rootlike tendrils that wrap around the bearer's head to secure it.
A set of fish jaws fashioned into a bracelet. When worn, the bearer has an in depth knowledge of northern pike.
A bracelet made from a lattice of woven brass. It automatically adjusts itself to the wrist size of its bearer.
A shimmery cloak clasp depicting a violin and a sword. It smells vaguely of ash and fire.
A sealed metal tin labeled “Armstrong Mustache Wax”. According to the description, the recipe has been passed down the Armstrong line for generations
A glazed porcelain pipe. Everything about it seems vaguely familiar, but you aren’t sure why.
An old and beaten up steel drinking flask. After carrying the object for more than 1d4 hours, the bearer becomes convinced that the flask has to be kept a secret.
An uncannily familiar face etched into a piece of dead wood.
A marble pyramid, small enough to fit in a human’s palm. When held, shadows seem to flicker in the corners of the bearer's vision.

A marble pyramid, small enough to fit in a human’s palm. When held, shadows seem to flicker in the corners of the bearer's vision.
A glass marble that looks a bit like a lizard’s eye and is always a bit cold to the touch.
A dried yellow tulip bulb that becomes healthy and opens when brought into especially strong sunlight.
A rather clunky cube of dark wood, engraved with hypnotizing patterns.
A hand sized, grey, stone statuette of a woman. It’s exceptionally detailed for its size, as even the folds in her cloak look almost lifelike.
A sewing needle made from some type of unknown, otherworldly metal.
A maroon eye patch, covered in fine embroidery that depicts tangled rose vines.
A polished wooden carving of a fish that turns a vibrant green when placed in water.
A polished mirror in a simple wooden frame. Looking into it for too long makes people feel uneasy in a way they cannot fully describe.
A crudely made wool, right handed glove, that's always pleasantly warm.
A fist sized crystal that looks like it holds trapped smoke. It is easily scratched.
A velvet pouch filled with coarse sand that feels weightless.
A bronze brooch in the shape of a feather that lets off a faint glow.
A single Randomly Colored dragon scale, worn away by time.
A glass bottle of some type of potent-smelling tonic. It’s taste is gritty and bitter, and somewhat reminiscent of charcoal.
A leaf that never rots, wilts or decays. Purple speckles dapple its surface whenever it’s held in the light.
An empty section of honeycomb. It causes an almost electric tingle if touched to bare skin.
A lock of fur tied into a tight bundle with a parchment scrap beside it. It reads, “Pelt Sample #027”.
A gilded teacup, laced with a spiderweb of thin cracks. Despite the cracks, it never seems to break.
A slip of tattered paper covered in something resembling letters. It seems to be a poem written in an old language.
A tightly rolled scroll. Reading reveals it to be someone’s diary. They apparently had a dramatic life.
A simple, copper belt buckle.
A twisted, grey wooden walking cane sized for a halfling.
An ornate, tarnished key with two prongs. Neither end seems to be able to open anything.
A rich, purple hand fan. Intricate designs of peacocks cover it’s surface when unfolded.
A small piece of dead brain coral. Your mind feels at ease when you hold it.
A tablet of fired clay. Dozens of names are written on its surface.
An iron-bound bullhorn
A small bone whistle carved with symbols and imagery of death. When blown it creates shrill, eerie notes that echos into the distance.
A simple white ribbon. While it is attached to clothing, the bearer finds it difficult to fall asleep.
An urgent letter requesting help. The date indicates that it's from over a hundred years ago, but its linguistics are more suited to more current times.
A used incense burner crafted from a human sternum.
A finely beaded women's handbag. The beads are made of glass, and the different colors have been sewn into an image of a sandwich.
A large, dark blue button. On it is a baby's bassinet painted in gold.
A sewing kit filled with cacti needles with fine holes in the end instead of regular sewing needles.
A set of watercolor brushes perfectly sized for a gnome.
A bronze calligraphy pen covered in filigree patterns. When used as a writing utensil, the bearer will be incapable of stopping themselves from adding an "e", or that languages equivalent, to the end of every word.
A whetstone that will sharpen blades, but only if the bearer asks nicely first. If the bearer does not ask, every blade they attempt to sharpen will become increasingly dull.
A large vial made of smokey quartz, whose plug is comprised of compressed grass and glue.
A deck of well worn playing cards, marked with indeterminable stains and smelling of cigar smoke and whiskey.
A small bracelet made up of a series of interlocking clockwork mechanisms and ring puzzles.
A pamphlet for a new church in an unfamiliar town. It details their strong beliefs in polyamorous relationships and their condemnation for magic of any kind.
A pamphlet for a lecture on the differences between gnomes and halflings in a town not too far away.
A six inch coffin, hand carved from elm. The inside is padded and covered in light pink silk.
A plain oaken case, the inside of which is lined in plush, royal blue velvet. The velvet has three indents on which lie three ordinary looking pine cones.
A poorly made porcelain vase with gold leaf randomly placed on it.
A mason jar with a scattering of unicorn hair across the bottom.
A stuffed toy frog with amber, glass eyes. When in possession of the bearer, they will notice that the air around them is oddly absent of bugs.
A set of fake eyelashes made out of owlbear fur.
A short haired wig made from owlbear fur.
A long haired, black wig made from the hair of a horse's mane. There are strands of gold woven through it.
A fairly unused set of Orcish dentures. The canine teeth are made of silver.
A crystal perfume bottle half filled with a potent, musky scent.
A gnome sized silver hair brush. On it in Orcish script is crudely scratched “Remember Me”
Several dried moose ears sewn together and fashioned into a sheath for an average sized dagger
A black linen sleeping mask that covers the bearer's eyes during sleep to stop light from bothering the bearer.
A clear hermit crab shell made of glass.
A small bowl made of bronze. If any liquid but water is put in it, it will take on a salty taste.
An off-white canvas bag with a green and bronze dragon embroidered on it. It always smells of a campfire that has just been put out.
A small pillbox made out of layered purple, metallic scales. A close examination reveals that the scales are metallic, but even a knowledgeable PC cannot identify what creature they originally belonged to.
A small bag containing a set of a dozen 2x2 cm steel cubes.
A large riding crop with steel studs in it. A creature hit by it immediately develops a series of bloody welts in their skin which spell out the word "Ouch".
A pair of Randomly Coloured silk stockings.
A flute that makes no sound, no matter how it is played. It’s surface is a shimmery grey.
A heartfelt poem about unrequited love on a pristine scroll.
A stone tablet, with etchings of great heroes covering it. All of their eyes are scratched out.
A sketch depicting a wilting rose that causes anyone who looks at it to feel bleak.
A flamboyant masquerade mask with large, rare feathers coming from one side. There’s a small chip under the left eye.
A ragged piece of burlap with the personal crest of a wealthy merchant inked onto it.
A set of smooth iron bangles. They have a decent weight to them, as if they’re pure rather than plated.
A broad cavalier hat that's a bit old, but it’s still fairly stylish.
An ornate saucer painted with scenes of songbirds in flight. Whenever you aren’t looking directly at it, the birds seem to move.
A wooden birdhouse, carved and painted to look like a castle.
A wooden spool with three feet of coiled copper wire.
A specially crafted steel cage that looks like it could hold about five rats. It includes stout leather straps around its open end and a metal crucible for holding hot charcoal or other fuel on its top end. Knowledgeable PC's will recognize this as a torture device used by tightly strapping the open end of the device to a helpless victim’s abdomen, inserting the rats into the cage, and setting the crucible’s fuel alight. The increasing strong heat of the metal crucible causes the rats to gnaw and dig their way through the victim’s abdomen to escape. Panicked rats will chew clear through the victim's body in order to escape the heat.
A deck of illustrated fortune-teller’s cards, used by those in tune with the spirit world to predict the future, and by charlatans to take money from gullible or desperate people. The deck is made of quality wooden plaques with painted color images and is stored in a smooth leather case.
A large suitcase containing a croquet set. It includes four wooden mallets, nine wooden wickets (goals), and four wooden balls.
A suitcase containing a dartboard set. It includes a multicolored board that breaks into four smaller pieces for easy travel and six brass-tipped darts. The board itself consists of a layer of of painted cork on hardwood backing.
A wooden box containing a set of dominoes. There are 28 white marble tiles with pips on each end.
A set of four brightly colored juggling sticks adorned with colorful streamers that can be tossed and manipulated to create displays and patterns.
A leather case containing two iron stakes and four iron horseshoes.
A thin length of rope with many oddly shaped bits of hollow metal fixed along its length. Commonly known as a roar cord, a creature can swing it over their head to generate a variety of eerie noises.
A broad-brimmed straw hat with a green linen band
A cast iron skillet whose perfect mirror surface never scratches.
A wood cased harmonica trimmed in tin
A small sack containing 30 gold pieces. Perceptive PC's will notice that they are all fakes, with thin gold plating over lead coins.
A palm sized rock with a lifelike mouth painted on it. While in a creature's possession, any laugh, chuckle or giggle the bearer utters sounds forced or fake, even if it's genuine.
An anklet made from fresh liquid blood, held together by odd magic.
A strange horn made of a winding pretzel of valves and tubes that according to the maker's mark, was finely crafted by a powerful bard. Knowledgeable PC's will remember that the horn was constructed for one purpose, to lock a terrible beast away deep within the mountain of Redwall. It contains a large portion of the life essence of that bard and to this day it remains as the solitary key to the door that holds the beast at bay. No one knows who this bard was, but he remains an unsung hero of the city.
A demon skin stretched over a black wooden war drum that creates deep growling rumbles when beaten.
A driftwood coin whose color is constantly swirling in different muted hues, from pale gray to seafoam green and even thin stripes of black. The surface of the coin is utterly smooth, as if it has spent an aeon at the bottom of the sea. Despite this, the elven queen and king that adorn its opposite faces are still depicted in perfect detail.

Museum Visit - NYC’s Met and MoMA
This past week, my sister and I traveled up to NYC for a few days. During our trip I experienced a lot of firsts: getting ripped off at a deli, breaking up a fight by falling down subway stairs, and eating the best pizza of my life--by all means a typical New York trip. But can you really say you’ve seen the city if you don’t visit either of the major art museums? Of course not. So we ventured uptown to see them.
The Met
The Metropolitan Museum of Art spans two floors and four city blocks, with a focus on antiquity. The bulk of the collection comes not in the form of paintings or photos but artifacts including sculptures and jewelry. The nature of the collection is that there are thousands upon thousands of items on exhibit, ranging from very small to very large. You can walk through the Temple of Dendur or strain your eyes on byzantine rings. It’s easy to get overloaded. I was already feeling the fatigue when I tried to orient myself (I didn’t). This, combined with my tendency towards headaches, meant I only got a brief viewing before calling it quits. So I planned to focus on the modern art collection.
My Favorite Pieces:
Anselm Kiefer. Bohemia Lies by the Sea (1996)
pictured bottom left
In this painting, a pink and grey poppy field is bisected by a dirt road. At first, passing by it at the same distance as the other paintings, it looked like a Pollock. But as I studied the surface I realized my mistake. The paint wasn’t purely splattered it was built up through thick cracked layers with chunks of burlap between it and the canvas. Stepping back several feet I could see the picture. The dirt greys were perfectly mundane in contrast to the charming poppy flowers. I loved the illegibility of it -- that it was complete manic nonsense up close but was so quietly commanding far away.
Philip Guston. Stationary Figure (1973)
pictured bottom right
It was interesting to read that Guston’s early work was very different from this piece. Those works were considered to be very “serious” paintings. But when he took up this new style he was severely criticized. I love the pop art aspect of it. I really respect when artists abandon the pretentious in favor of relating to the wider culture outside art. I think Guston does this fantastically in his comic style that captures a relatable sense of anxiety.
MoMA
While sitting at a much humbler two-thirds of a block, the Museum of Modern Art instead reaches six total floors of gallery space. My legs certainly felt the burn while trekking up and down in search of a bathroom. We went on a late Friday night when the museum hosts its free night. In exchange for saving $20 we battled the crowds to look at some of modern art’s most iconic images.
My Favorite Pieces:
Claude Monet. Water Lilies. (1914-26)
pictured second
Nothing quite compares to seeing Monet’s waterlilies in person. This particular piece stands out from other lilies paintings as being the most indulgent. While all his works evoke the mythical beauty of nature, this piece crafts one. It’s an imagined nature, one that borrows colors from across the spectrum. It’s lilies at their extreme--light and ethereal.
Jean-Michel Basquiat. Glenn. (1984) and Keith Haring. Untitled. (1982)
pictured third and first, respectively
In Glenn, Basquiat portrays a loud face over the right side of what is a collection of sketches on different papers. In Untitled, Haring crowds the wood boards with some of his iconic figures. Haring and Basquiat share a lot through their maximalist style. The frenetic energy of both work well to convey mania and chaos. Both embraced dynamic composition. They both also explored and represented the minority groups they inhabited. I enjoyed seeing their work for the time that can be spent, near endlessly picking through the details. Their work tackles so much at once that deciphering their pieces is a much richer experience to me.
Conclusion
MoMA definitely topped the Met for me, but that’s because I enjoy modern art most. MoMA’s layout design was also a lot more intuitive and navigable. The icing on the cake was of course being able to go for free, though I would consider paying in the future if only to avoid the crowds.
When looking at art you can see it through two perspectives - the universal truths that art seeks the convey but also the small moments of history where an artist articulates them. Over the course of a few hours at both I had the privilege of being face to face with some of the world’s most famous and impactful art. And still its only a fraction.

Or then again, if your function is at a plantation natively constructed sticks and rations, crisp leafy foods containers, or carefully assembled rolls, desserts, and cakes are scrumptious wedding appreciates that makes certain to help them to remember your huge day.
Tumblr media
The sound of music
While most weddings have conventional music, you would likely expect that a nation wedding must have down home music. Like how a homestead or winery can be a clear canvas for your wedding subject, so can the music.
Nation weddings are simply ideal for live amusement, think a string group of four on the off chance that you need tasteful and rich, or on the off chance that you need something current that suits the earth, you can't go past blues and roots.
It doesn't make a difference what type of music you like, it's everything about picking something that you can stroll down the isle to, and a sound that will cause your visitors to find a workable pace during the gathering.
Extraordinary completing contacts
On the off chance that it is a warm spring or summer day, you can have fans and parisols for your visitors. On the off chance that your wedding is in the cooler months and goes far into the night, treat your visitors with a thundering blaze.

7 Cozy Ways to Warm Up Your Home Decor This Fall
fotostorm/iStock
Whether you own a cabin in the woods or a house on a lake, or just wish you did and want to channel some of those cozy, curl-up-with-hot-cocoa vibes now that the weather has grown cold, there are plenty of ways to set a more autumnal mood with your home decor.
One advantage to a rustic look is that it’s affordable and easy to pull off—equal parts vintage and second-hand items, inexpensive fabrics, and simple displays.
Here’s some help with colors, fabrics, and fun motifs to ring in the fall season right!
1. Canvas and burlap
Durability is the goal with fabrics in a woodsy home. Seek out canvas, burlap, cotton, and linen for upholstery, curtains, pillows, and more.
“Canvas in particular is a smart way to give your home a cabinlike personality because of its rustic texture and look,” says Marty Basher, a design and organization expert with Modular Closets.
Basher recommends this material on lampshades, tablecloths, ottomans, and even bar stool seats. Or pick up a canvas laundry bag, magazine rack, or tote bags to use for storage and display.
2. Natural colors
When considering paint here, look to the colors of nature. Being immersed in the great outdoors is the idea, so think of earth tones seen in the woods—as well as splashes of color where flowers may be blooming, says Basher.
“True colors (reds, greens, blues) will speak well to this look, whereas pastels fall short except in small doses,” he adds.
Drew Henry of Design Dudes agrees: “I’d go for whites, grays, blacks, red and green shades, and more muted colors, and stay away from anything that’s too bright,” he notes.
3. Checks and plaid
“Many people associate cabins with camping—and this leads to thoughts of picnicking,” says Basher.
A classic red-and-white-checked design, gingham, or plaid are good places to begin in your kitchen and dining areas. Plaid bedding, window treatments, and throw pillows are other ways to express the theme.
But use some restraint with certain patterns, warn the pros.
“Too many checks and plaid looks can be overwhelming and kitschy, so stick to one or two areas,” says Basher. Judicious decor is wise with a cabin theme, rather than turning your home into a literal Y camp.
4. Games and sports
Outdoor activities are classic cabin fun, so bring these ideas inside when considering your decor. Try oars on the wall or used as stair railings or even grouped together to form a headboard. You can continue the motif with framed sailing flags or old life preservers.
“You can go several directions when it comes to themes for a cabin-inspired home, including fishing and sailing if you’re near the water or nature and hunting if you live in the country,” points out Basher.
Henry likes rope designs as cords to accent drapes or a mounted fish on the wall.
Fill the space above your fireplace with old water skis, snowshoes, ice skates, or badminton rackets, suggests Basher.
“Classic board games are another natural fit here—and don’t hide them. Just set one up on a shelf to enhance that cozy, family-gathering feeling,” he explains.
5. Trunks and suitcases
Search your attic, hit up flea markets, and scour yard sales for old steamer trunks and vintage suitcases. Both can be used as decor and storage in a cabin home.
“Look for the ones with lots of landmark stickers all over them,” offers Basher. He also recommends hidden storage like a hollow faux fur ottoman, as well as armoires and hutches to corral supplies and display treasures.
Choose furniture that’s a mix of inherited pieces, estate sale finds, homemade things, and lots of personal history, says Karen Gray-Plaisted of Design Solutions KGP. “These styles help convey a feeling of warmth and relaxation,” she says.
6. Cozy textures
“There really doesn’t need to be a lot of fuss involved in decorating this type of space,” notes Gray-Plaisted. She’s seen cabins and country homes that are very Scandinavian in feel with minimal furnishings, but lots of textures, too.
Ones to consider: chunky knit blankets, cozy throws for the couch, woven baskets, flannel sheets, and soft wool rugs.
7. Animal motifs
Unless you’re an avid hunter, there’s no need to go full-on taxidermy in a cabin home. But animal motifs definitely make sense here and could include antlers around a mirror, as a lamp base, or over a mantel.
Henry suggests graphic pillow patterns or framed silhouettes of bears, rabbits, and foxes.
“Make it fun and whimsical,” he suggests.

By Jean Marie Carey
Painter, collagist, and designer Alberto Burri was born 12 March 1915 in Città di Castello, Umbria. Burri took an unusual path to becoming an artist known for his highly saturated oil and acrylic paintings, which, later in his career, evolved into collages adorned with embedded pieces of charred wood and rusted metal.
Burri was a first a doctor specializing in tropical medicine, taking his degree from the Università degli Studi di Perugia. When Italy entered World War II in October 1940 Burri was conscripted as a medic and sent to Libya. His unit was captured in in Tunisia, and Burri was held as a prisoner of war in Hereford, Texas, until 1945
While detained Burri began using whatever materials were to hand to make ad-hoc paintings, including scraps of paper and burlap bags. Transformed by the war, he eventually resettled in Rome and abandoned medicine for art. In 1948 his work became non-objective, and in 1949 he anticipated Arte Povera as he began incorporating canvas, wood, and metal in his pictures as collage elements. Often he splashed red paint on the cloth in a way that suggested blood-soaked bandages. He also designed stage decor for La Scala in Milan and other theaters. Burri died in Nice, France, in 1995.
In the fall of 2015, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum mounted the exhibition Alberto Burri: The Trauma of Painting, the first major contemporary retrospective of Burri's work in the United States.

How do you show jewelry for sale?
You show jewelry for sale in the way that best shows the whole piece as it will be used. For example, earrings should hang. Bracelets should be placed on round bars. Necklaces should be placed on busts. You will get better jewelry display ideas as you look at more displays.
How do you display jewelry at a craft show?
When you are at a craft fair you can have a wide range of pieces. Whether it is DIY jewelry or an eye-catching antique piece you bought at an auction, make sure all of your jewels are easily accessible so customers can see them up close. You’ll likely want to show off multiple pieces at once. So you might consider racks that rotate or containers that hold multiple pieces next to one another.
If all else fails, you can make your own DIY jewelry display to truly showcase your jewels in a craft booth.
