High-speed laboratory car (SVL), 1970
An experimental self-propelled aerovagon with jet traction, which was a modified lead motor car of the ER22 electric train with a modified head section to improve aerodynamic properties and AI-25 turbojet engines installed on the roof, which were used on the Yak-40 passenger aircraft. Created at the Kalinin Carriage Works (KVZ) in 1970.
Designed for research related to the study of the behavior of the wheel-rail system in high-speed movement. Employees of the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Carriage Building (VNIIV) and the Yakovlev Design Bureau took part in the development. To reduce air resistance, fairings (head and tail) were installed on the car, and the undercar equipment and automatic coupling were also covered.
The maximum speed achieved during testing was about 250 km/h.
In 2008, the nose of the wagon with jet engines was cut off, painted and installed as a memorial stele in honor of the 110th anniversary of the Tver (former Kalinin) wagon-building plant.

Snippet of first draft of chapter 1 of my modern Au Davron fan fiction.
Chapter One
The stone walls stood as they had for more than two centuries, simple, sturdy, and strong. Mined from the hills and the valleys, they rose in testament to man’s inherent desire to leave his mark, to build and create.
Over those two centuries man married the stone with brick, with wood and glass, enlarging, transforming, enhancing to suit the needs, the times, the whims. Throughout, the building on the crossroads watched as the settlement became a town, as more buildings sprang up.
The dirt road became asphalt; horse and carriage gave way to cars. Fashions flickered by in the blink of an eye. Still it stood, rising on its corner of The Square, an enduring landmark in the cycle of change.
It knew war, heard the echo of gunfire, the cries of the wounded, the prayers of the fearful. It knew blood and tears, joy and fury. Birth and death.
It thrived in good times, endured the hard times. It changed hands and purpose, yet the stone walls stood.
In time, the wood of its graceful double porches began to sag. Glass broke; mortar cracked and crumbled. Some who stopped at the light on the town square might glance over to see pigeons flutter in and out of broken windows and wonder what the old building had been in its day. Then the light turned green, and they drove on.
Davos knew.
He stood on the opposite corner of The Square, thumbs tucked into the pockets of his jeans. Thick with summer, the air held still. With the road empty, he could have crossed Main Street against the light, but he continued to wait. Opaque blue tarps draped the building from roof to street level, curtaining the front of the building. Over the winter it had served to hold the heat in for the crew. Now it helped block the beat of the sun—and the view.
But he knew—how it looked at that moment, and how it would look when the rehab was complete. After all, he’d designed it—he, his two cousins, his uncle. But the blueprints bore his name as architect, his primary function as a partner in Blackwood Family Contractors.
He crossed over, his tennis shoes nearly silent on the road in the breathless hush of three a.m. He walked under the scaffolding, along the side of the building, down St. Paul, pleased to see in the glow of the streetlight how well the stone and brick had cleaned up.
It looked old—it was old, he thought, and that was part of its beauty and appeal. But now, for the first time in his memory, it looked tended.
He rounded the back, walked over the sunbaked dirt, through the construction rubble scattered over what would be a courtyard. Here the porches that spanned both the second and third stories ran straight and true. Custom-made pickets—designed to replicate those from old photographs of the building, and the remnants found during excavation—hung freshly primed and drying on a length of wire.
He knew his eldest cousin, Benjicot, in his role as head contractor, had the rails and pickets scheduled for install.
He knew because Elinor, the middle of the three Blackwood cousins, plagued them all over schedules, calendars, projections, and ledgers—and kept Davos informed of every nail hammered.
Whether he wanted to be or not.
In this case, he supposed as he dug out his key, he wanted to be—usually. The old hotel had become a family obsession.
It had him by the throat, he admitted as he opened the unfinished and temporary door to what would be The Lobby. And by the heart—and hell, it had him by the balls. No other project they’d ever worked on had ever gotten its hooks in him, in all of them, like this. He suspected none ever would again.
He hit the switch, and the work light dangling from the ceiling flashed on to illuminate bare concrete floors, roughed-in walls, tools, tarps, material.
It smelled of wood and concrete dust and, faintly, of the grilled onions someone must have ordered for lunch.
He’d do a more thorough inspection of the first and second floors in the morning when he had better light. Stupid to have come over at this hour anyway, when he couldn’t really see crap, and was dog tired. But he couldn’t resist it.
By the balls, he thought again, passing under a wide archway, its edges of stone still rough and exposed. Then, flipping on his flashlight, he headed toward the front and the work steps that led up.
There was something about the place in the middle of the night, when the noise of nail guns, saws, radios, and voices ended, and the shadows took over. Something not altogether quiet, not altogether still. Something that brushed fingers over the back of his neck.
Something else he couldn’t resist.
He swept his light around the second floor, noted the brown-bag backing on the walls. As always, Elinor’s report had been accurate. Benji and his crew had the insulation completed on this level.
Though he’d intended to go straight up, he roamed here with a grin spreading over his sharply boned face, the pleasure of it lighting eyes the color of blue-green shadows.
“Coming along,” he said into the silence in a voice gravelly from lack of sleep.
He moved through the dark, following his beam of light, a tall man with narrow hips, the long Blackwood legs, and the waving mass of black hair with hints of brown that came down from the Le Fey—his maternal side.
He had to remind himself that if he kept poking around he’d have to get up before he got to bed, so he climbed up to the third floor.
“Now that’s what I’m talking about.” Pure delight scattered thoughts of sleep as he traced a finger down the taped seam of freshly hung drywall.
He played his light over the holes cut out for electric, moved into what would be the innkeeper’s apartment, and noted the same for plumbing in the kitchen and bath. He spent more time wandering through what would be their most elaborate suite, nodding approval at the floating wall dividing the generous space in the bath.
“You’re a frigging genius, Fiery Shit. Now, for God’s sake, go home.”
But giddy with fatigue and anticipation, he took one more good look before he made his way down the steps.
He heard it as he reached the second floor. A kind of humming—and distinctly female. As the sound reached him, so did the scent. Honeysuckle, sweet and wild and ripe with summer.
His belly did a little dance, but he held the flashlight steady as he swept it down the hall into unfinished guest rooms. He shook his head as both sound and scent drifted away.
“I know you’re here.” He spoke clearly, and his voice echoed back to him. “And I guess you’ve been here for a while. We’re bringing her back, and then some. She deserves it. I hope to hell you like it when she’s done because, well, that’s the way it’s going to be.”
He waited a minute or two, fanciful enough—or tired enough—to imagine whoever, or whatever, inhabited the place settled on a wait-and-see mode.
“Anyway.” He shrugged. “We’re giving her the best we’ve got, and we’re pretty damn good.”
He walked down, noted the work light no longer shone. Davos turned it on again, switched it back off with another shrug. It wouldn’t be the first time the current resident had messed with one of them.
“Good night,” he called out, then locked up.
This time he didn’t wait for the light, but crossed diagonally. Vesta Pizzeria and Family Restaurant spread over another corner of The Square, with his apartment and office above. He walked down the sloping sidewalk to the back parking lot, grabbed his bag from the cab of his truck. Deciding he’d murder anyone who called him before eight a.m., Davos unlocked the stairwell, then climbed past the restaurant level to his door.
He didn’t bother with the light, but moved by memory and the backwash of streetlights through the apartment. He stripped by the bed, letting the clothes drop.
He flopped facedown on the mattress, and fell asleep thinking of honeysuckle.

This month's car review (from a Navi magazine)
difficult for men
Nissan March Cabriolet (CVT) 1.79 million yen
NISSAN MARCH CABRIOLET
The ``Cabriolet'' has been added to Nissan's ``cash cow'' March, with approximately 300,000 units sold each year around the world.
This model was originally exhibited as a reference at the 31st Tokyo Motor Show, but it was decided to go on sale this time because ``many customers requested that it be commercially available.'' However, it's already been two years since the last motor show, so I can't help but wonder, ``Why now?''
Regarding this, when the current March was announced in 1992, it was declared that there would be no model changes for 10 years. However, if we think about the next five years, we cannot rest on our laurels, so we announced the Cabriolet as the top grade of the March brand, creating a buzz and drawing attention to the March again. This seems to be a more realistic reason. It is produced by Takada Kogyo, a Nissan affiliate company that also produced the previous March-based Be-1 and Pao.
The exterior of the March Cabriolet is quite cute. In addition to simply removing the roof, a light notch was added to the rear end of the body to tighten the buttocks.
It somehow reminds me of the Peugeot 205 cabriolet.
The interior is basically the same as the March, but the seat fabric is modeled after a Milan city map and is exclusive to the Cabriolet. The chic sand beige hood is electric, so it doesn't take much time or effort to open or close it, and it only needs to be locked in two places at the top of the front window. The lowered top fits almost within the waistline of the body, but in order to secure that space, the interior length is about 10cm shorter than that of a hatchback. As a result, the rear seat has just enough space to accommodate two adults.
Unfortunately, the sky was cloudy that day, but it felt great to drive fully open on the highland roads around Risonare Kobuchizawa, which was the base for the test ride. Generally speaking, a 4-seater that opens up has a wide opening, which means that the wind is forced into the cabin, but in the case of the March, the high A-pillar of the tall boy style remains, so the side windows can be opened. Once you raise it up, the wind doesn't really bother you.
The closed-body March is available with two engines, 1ℓ and 1.3ℓ, but only the 1.3ℓ, which produces 79 ps, is available in the Cabriolet. However, due to the reinforcements added to the open body, the vehicle weighs 110kg more than before, so its power performance is on par with the liter version of a hatchback. When you step on the accelerator, the exhaust pipe emits a brave sound, but the speed does not increase as much as that sound. A roll bar (which guarantees safety in the event of a fall) is installed to ensure rigidity.
Although the roof rails (which Nissan calls them ``roof rails'') are still in place, the floor trembles when you go over a large step. Well, in any case, it's not so much that it's a hindrance to driving normally around town.
According to the person in charge of development, the keyword for the development of the March Cabriolet was ``a usable cabriolet.'' To achieve this, we focused on four points: (1) electric soft top, (2) heated glass rear window, (3) 4-seater seating, and (4) trunk-through mechanism. By the way, the Fiat Punto Cabrio, which is seen as a rival, does not have (2), and the Toyota・The Cynos Convertible does not have ① or ④. The price of the Punto is 2.45 million yen, and the advanced grade Cynos is 2.103 million yen. The March on the other hand costs 1.79 million yen for the NCVT specification, so it can be said that the March has the advantage in terms of equipment and price.
Regarding the March Cabriolet, I thought the styling was good and the construction of each part was okay, but to be honest, I felt like it was a little out of place. So, I thought, ``Why is that?'' But in the end, I thought that the March Cabriolet was too cute, or rather, it gave the impression that it was ``for girls.'' It was said to be strong. At least I can't imagine myself, a 30-year-old man, driving one, or rather, I don't really want to imagine it.
March Cabriolet, difficult for men. (Kawanishi)
PIC CAPTIONS
The March Cabriolet has a total length x width x width = 3720 x 1585 x 1430mm, and is 25mm longer and 5mm taller than the closed body. The body color is green, red, and silver as shown in the photo. Regardless of the body color, it is combined with a beige hood. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, power steering, front seat double airbags, ABS, and seatbelt pretensioners. The price is 1.79 million yen for the CVT model and 1.69 million yen for the 5MT model.

Oh the delightful colours of autumn! I think the red leaves are Virginia Creeper.
So this week I feel as if I have been “the white tornado”! I had a lovely walk down to the river, obviously taking photos as I always do. I did miss the opportunity of photographing the train as it made its way from the last stop, Chaumont, to the next stop, Bar-sur-Aube, it’s final destination being Paris. I was too busy trying to take the above photo.
I took delivery of the new printer 😁, amongst all the blurb was a CD for installing onto the computer……. Oh I wanted to cry! However another bag of blurb contained information on how to install online. Well it took about three attempts but somehow (I know not how) it actually worked and I was able to print papers to my hearts content!
A visit to the doctors was on the cards too as I told the nurse about my swollen, red hot ankles and she said the dreaded word “phlebitis”. Typically, my ankles were still a little swollen but had no signs of redness or heat when I arrived at the doctors and he concluded that it could be water retention. So I was given tablets (yes more!) and he hoped that I would expel the water by the usual channel.
We had very, very heavy rain on Tuesday and as I had anticipated (by placing a bucket in the appropriate spot) the water started coming through the dining room ceiling yet again! I decided to ring the man who had been out to view it the year before, but had never let me have the estimate as he was going through a divorce! When he answered, I just gave my name and he said he would be with me “tout de suite”, which to be honest he was. He remembered my address, all about the problem and he asked if I would be in all day as he would bring the estimate later that same day. He kept his word, I was happy with the price (as last year he had been up on the roof investigating the problem) I signed the estimate making it a binding contract and he will come and do the work when we have a dry day. Hallelujah!
I had a phone call from the hospital changing the date of my CT scan from Thursday to Friday. Of course I was in panic mode! Taxi to be cancelled and booked for the next day but everything was fine. So off I went with a very polite taxi driver. Having attained 60+ years without any real marks on my skin ( a caesarean scar but that’s not noticeable) I have now had not one but two tattoos! 😂😂these will also not be visible as they are the tattoos for my radiotherapy. I am under the impression that the treatment will start in two weeks, but who knows I may get a phone call to go in earlier or later!
I decided to clear the wardrobe of all the items which are just too big for me now. There were five pairs of trousers which just hung on me, a skirt which may have wiggled it’s way down 😳, there were t-shirts and tops which I would have worn but would have hung on me again! I took it all to the charity shop. Then I started clearing out other areas, and then filled the car with “stuff”for the decheterie (tip). Holy smoke, I had things I had brought over from England which were still wrapped in bubble wrap, well I have been here over 6 years so I reckon it is safe to say I won’t be needing them. I have a lot of English books which I have read and I am going to meet up with a friend on Tuesday and she is going to take me to a charity shop, in deepest darkest Haute Marne, where she has seen English books. So as you can guess I am sorting out more bits and pieces to take. Plus I am going to check out the garage for more stuff to go to the decheterie.
After clearing the clothes, I was looking for some new jumpers. I saw a couple on the “sale rail” bought them and brought them home to try on, they were a perfect fit. Yesterday, I went out looking for other items and I got the bargain of the day, a skirt with 70% off the original price! I tried it on and it too fitted very well. I have had a productive week.
I have been “knitting Nora” working on the babies blanket. As I would like all the knitting sorted up earlier than the 24 November so that it is all ready for the Christmas Fayre.
Of course my week wouldn’t be complete without messages to French and English friends plus telephone calls to the UK too. I really don’t know how I fit all of these in as phone calls usually run for an hour (or more). As the old BT advert used to say “ it’s good to talk”.
Now it’s time for the records spot! This weeks offerings are “My Cherie Amour” by Stevie Wonder from back in 1969. I remember at school in the playground we used to listen to the charts on a Tuesday, on a little transistor radio. I loved this song and would sing along any time it was played.
The second song is “Question” by The Moody Blues. My first “real” boyfriend liked the band as well as Wishbone Ash, Led Zeppelin and others of their ilk. I got into the Moody Blues after “Nights in White Satin” was in the charts again in 1972 and strangely was seeing the same guy for the second time. He was still into Wishbone Ash etc whereas I was into Slade, T Rex, Bowie (for Mick Ronson) and Mott thé Hoople. 😂😂.
Let’s just give a quick mention to “The Daddy” who has been on “elderly relative duties” again this weekend. It will be the last weekend for a while. “The Trainee Solicitor” has had another busy week too, I hope he managed to take advantage of the extra hour in bed. “The Ex-Graduate” has had a couple of “rest days” this week but that was just to get her ready for a very busy week at work this coming week.
Jusqu’à la semaine prochaine.

Capital Catalysts: How Major Projects Drive City Evolution
Large-scale investments transform more than skylines—they redefine how cities grow, connect, and thrive. From new airports to sprawling mixed-use developments, these projects act as powerful catalysts. They spur economic momentum, reshape neighborhoods, and lay the groundwork for future innovation.
Boosting Economic Vitality
When city leaders approve a major project, the ripple effects on the local economy are immediate. Construction generates thousands of jobs in engineering, construction, and logistics. Suppliers of materials—from concrete to wiring—see surges in demand. After completion, employers move in to fill modern office space, bringing new careers and higher wages. Retail outlets and restaurants benefit from increased foot traffic. As businesses prosper, tax revenues rise, providing funds for schools, parks, and public safety.
Elevating Community Well-Being
Large projects must balance growth with the needs of residents. Effective plans include community input at every stage, ensuring that new developments respect local culture and history. Affordable housing quotas keep neighborhoods diverse and prevent displacement. Parks, plazas, and public art spaces offer places for families to gather. By integrating social services—such as clinics or childcare centers—into project blueprints, cities promote healthier, more connected communities.
Advancing Sustainable Infrastructure
Mega projects offer rare opportunities to prioritize sustainability. Green building standards cut energy use and lower emissions. Rain gardens, green roofs, and permeable pavement manage stormwater naturally. Transit-oriented developments place homes and shops near rail stations, reducing car dependence. In many cities, developers now install electric vehicle chargers and solar panels as standard features. These investments not only protect the environment but also reduce operating costs over time.
Harnessing Technology for Smarter Cities
Digital innovation is reshaping how large projects are designed and operated. City planners use data-driven models to forecast traffic patterns and public utility needs. Real-time monitoring systems track energy consumption, allowing quick adjustments to heating or cooling systems. Smart streetlights adjust brightness based on pedestrian activity. In some districts, digital wayfinding kiosks guide visitors and collect feedback. By embedding technology in infrastructure, cities gain greater efficiency and resilience.
Planning for Long-Term Success
The most impactful projects align with a clear vision that extends beyond initial construction. Public-private partnerships help share risks and benefits, while oversight committees ensure accountability. Performance metrics—such as job creation numbers, green space per capita, or transit ridership—measure success over the years. When unexpected challenges arise, stakeholders can adjust plans rather than abandon them. This adaptive approach builds trust and increases the likelihood of long-term gains.
Legacy of Investment
Over time, large-scale projects can define a city’s identity. A revitalized waterfront may become a celebrated gathering spot. A new transit line can reshape commuting habits and connect underserved areas. Landmark buildings often become symbols of civic pride. By carefully blending economic objectives with social and environmental goals, cities can ensure that their mega projects enrich lives for generations.
Strategic investments in mega projects serve as capital catalysts. They accelerate economic growth, foster inclusive communities, and pioneer sustainable and technological innovations. With thoughtful planning and ongoing collaboration, major projects will continue to shape dynamic, resilient cities well into the future.

Whether you’re hauling sports gear or luggage, these accessories ensure you never run out of space.
1. Roof Cargo Boxes: The Ultimate Storage Solution
If you frequently travel with bulky items, a roof cargo box is a game-changer. These boxes attach securely to your vehicle’s roof, providing extra room for luggage, camping gear, or even seasonal decorations. One of the top-rated models is the Thule Motion 3 rooftop box, known for its durability and aerodynamic design. But do these boxes actually encourage people to pack more? According to a study discussed in this article on whether roof boxes make you pack more, many users admit they tend to overpack when they have extra space.
Another advantage of roof cargo boxes is their weather-resistant construction. Rain, snow, or harsh sunlight won’t damage your belongings, making them ideal for long trips. If you’re concerned about aesthetics, some boxes can even be repainted to match your car’s color scheme. Wondering how to do that? This guide on how to repaint a cargo box walks you through the process step by step. Whether you’re looking for functionality or style, a roof cargo box is a smart investment for any road trip enthusiast.
2. Roof Racks: Versatile and Durable
Roof racks are another essential accessory for drivers who need extra storage flexibility. Unlike cargo boxes, roof racks allow you to carry oddly shaped items like bikes, kayaks, or even lumber. They come in different styles, including crossbars, side rails, and basket racks, each serving a unique purpose. For Dodge Journey owners, choosing the right roof rack can be tricky—luckily, this list of the best roof racks for Dodge Journey simplifies the decision-making process.
One common concern with roof racks is wind resistance, which can affect fuel efficiency. However, modern designs are built to minimize drag, ensuring a smoother ride. Additionally, many racks feature quick-release mechanisms, making installation and removal a breeze. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or just need extra space for sports equipment, a roof rack is a practical solution that adapts to your needs.
3. Interior Upgrades: Comfort and Convenience
While exterior accessories like roof boxes and racks are great, don’t overlook the importance of interior upgrades. Seat covers, floor mats, and organizers can significantly improve your driving experience. For example, waterproof floor mats protect your car’s interior from spills and mud, while seat covers add a touch of luxury and durability.
Another useful addition is a car trunk organizer, which keeps groceries, tools, and other items neatly in place. No more rolling water bottles or scattered shopping bags! If you often carry heavy cargo, consider installing a cargo liner to prevent scratches and damage to your trunk’s interior. These small but impactful upgrades make every drive more comfortable and organized.
4. Tech Gadgets: Smart Add-Ons for Modern Drivers
Technology has revolutionized car accessories, offering features that enhance safety and entertainment. Dash cams, for instance, provide video evidence in case of accidents, while Bluetooth adapters allow seamless music streaming in older cars. Another must-have is a wireless phone charger, eliminating the hassle of tangled cords.
For those who love road trips, a portable car fridge keeps drinks and snacks cool on long journeys. GPS trackers are also gaining popularity, helping drivers monitor their vehicle’s location in real time. With so many smart gadgets available, upgrading your car’s tech has never been easier.
5. Lighting and Aesthetic Enhancements
Custom lighting can transform your car’s appearance while improving visibility. LED headlights, for example, offer brighter illumination than traditional bulbs, enhancing nighttime safety. Interior ambient lighting adds a stylish touch, creating a more enjoyable driving atmosphere.
If you want to make a bold statement, consider custom decals or wraps. These allow you to personalize your car’s exterior without a permanent commitment. Even small changes, like chrome trim or alloy wheels, can give your vehicle a fresh, modern look.
Conclusion
Investing in the right car accessories can greatly improve your vehicle’s functionality, comfort, and style. Whether you need extra storage with a roof cargo box, versatility with a roof rack, or high-tech gadgets for convenience, there’s an accessory for every need. By choosing upgrades that fit your lifestyle, you can enhance both your driving experience and your car’s overall value. Ready to explore more options? Check out the best cargo boxes and start upgrading your ride today!

Are There Safety Standards for Skylights?
Skylights bring natural light and aesthetic charm to homes and commercial buildings. But here’s the thing—without proper safety standards, they can be a hidden hazard. Ever wondered what keeps these glass panels from becoming a safety risk? Turns out, there are strict guidelines in place to prevent accidents and ensure long-term durability.
Whether you’re a homeowner considering an upgrade or a contractor managing installations, understanding skylight safety standards isn’t just a good idea—it’s essential. Let’s break it down.
So, Are Skylights Actually Safe?
Short answer: Yes, but only if they meet proper safety standards.
Skylights, by design, are installed in a vulnerable spot—the roof. That means they’re exposed to harsh weather, potential impacts, and even accidental falls from maintenance workers. If they aren’t manufactured and installed correctly, they can crack, shatter, or even collapse under pressure.
That’s why safety regulations exist. They cover everything from the type of glass used to how skylights should be installed, tested, and maintained.
What Safety Standards Do Skylights Need to Follow?
Different regions and building codes dictate specific safety requirements, but some general standards apply across the board. Here are the key ones:
Impact Resistance and Load Bearing
Ever seen videos of someone accidentally stepping on a skylight? Not a pretty sight. To prevent breakage, skylights must be tested for impact resistance.
Human Impact Resistance – This ensures that if someone falls onto the skylight (say, a maintenance worker or an unfortunate bird), the glass won’t break into dangerous shards.
Wind and Snow Load Tests – Skylights need to withstand extreme weather. Think heavy snow piling up in the winter or strong winds rattling the roof.
What does this mean for you? If you live in an area with intense storms or snowfall, checking load ratings before installing a skylight is a must.
Glass Strength and Safety Glazing
Not all glass is created equal. Standard window glass? Way too risky. That’s why skylights require safety glazing.
Tempered Glass – This type of glass is heat-treated to be four to five times stronger than regular glass. If it does break, it shatters into small, less harmful pieces (kind of like a car windshield).
Laminated Glass – Think of this as a sandwich of glass layers with a strong plastic interlayer. Even if the glass cracks, it stays intact, reducing the risk of falling shards.
Most building codes require at least one layer of laminated glass in skylights installed over high-traffic areas.
Fall Protection Standards
Here’s something not everyone thinks about—skylights are considered a fall hazard, especially on commercial roofs.
In some places, regulations require that skylights on commercial buildings be equipped with fall protection barriers. These can be:
Skylight Screens – Metal mesh covers that prevent people from stepping through.
Cages or Railings – Protective barriers around the skylight.
Reinforced Glass – Skylights that meet specific impact resistance standards and can handle a certain amount of weight.
Homeowners don’t always have to meet the same requirements, but if your skylight is in a high-traffic area, it’s worth looking into added safety features.
Leak Prevention and Proper Sealing
A skylight that leaks? That’s a nightmare no one wants to deal with.
To prevent leaks, skylights must be installed with:
Proper Flashing – This directs water away from the edges.
High-Quality Seals – Keeps out rain, snow, and drafts.
Slope Considerations – Flat skylights are more prone to leaks than sloped ones since water can pool on the surface.
Building codes often specify minimum slopes and require waterproofing materials that can handle heavy rainfall.
What Happens If a Skylight Doesn’t Meet Safety Standards?
Ignoring skylight safety regulations isn’t just risky—it can also lead to legal trouble.
Code Violations – If your skylight doesn’t meet safety codes, you may run into issues during inspections, especially if you’re selling your property.
Increased Liability – For commercial property owners, failing to meet safety standards could result in lawsuits if someone gets injured.
Shorter Lifespan – A poorly installed or low-quality skylight will deteriorate faster, leading to costly repairs or replacements.
Bottom line? Following safety standards isn’t just about compliance—it’s about protecting your home, investment, and everyone inside.
How Can You Ensure Your Skylight Meets Safety Standards?
If you’re installing or replacing a skylight, don’t just assume it meets the necessary requirements. Here’s what you can do:
Check Building Codes – Requirements can vary by location, so always check what’s mandated in your area.
Choose Certified Skylights – Look for products tested and certified by recognized safety organizations.
Work with a Reputable Contractor – Proper installation is just as important as the skylight itself.
Schedule Regular Inspections – Catching small issues early can prevent bigger (and more expensive) problems later.
Final Thoughts
Skylights are a great addition to any home or building, but safety should always come first. From impact resistance to proper sealing, there’s a lot that goes into making sure they’re secure. Whether you’re installing a new one or checking the safety of an existing skylight, keeping up with the latest standards is a smart move.
Thinking about adding a skylight to your home or commercial property? Make sure it’s built to last—and built to protect.

How to Choose the Best Roof Racks for Your Vehicle
Tumblr media
Whether you're planning a road trip, a weekend outdoor adventure, or simply need extra storage space, having the right gear to transport your belongings is essential. One of the most practical solutions for increasing your vehicle’s carrying capacity is installing a rooftop carrier system. Choosing the right fit for your vehicle isn’t just about function—it’s also about safety, durability, and compatibility. That’s why investing in the proper Roof Racks can make all the difference when it comes to both convenience and performance.
Before you make a purchase, it's important to consider several factors that affect how well the rack will suit your specific needs.
Understand Your Vehicle’s Requirements
The first step in selecting a suitable rack is understanding what type of roof your vehicle has. Cars, SUVs, and trucks vary in terms of roof design, and not all systems will work universally.
Common roof types include:
Bare Roof: No factory-installed rails or mounts
Raised Rails: Rails that run along the sides of the roof, raised slightly to allow space underneath
Flush Rails: Similar to raised rails but sit flush with the roof
Fixed Points: Pre-installed mounting points
Track Systems: Sliding tracks for adjustable mounting
Knowing your roof type ensures you choose a rack system that fits securely and doesn’t require unnecessary modifications.
Determine Your Cargo Needs
What do you plan to carry? Different roof systems are optimized for different uses:
Cargo Boxes: Great for luggage, camping gear, or seasonal items
Bike Racks: Securely mount one or multiple bicycles
Kayak or Canoe Carriers: Designed for water sports enthusiasts
Ski/Snowboard Mounts: Ideal for winter adventures
Roof Baskets: Open carriers for odd-shaped items or duffel bags
Selecting a system that supports your specific gear will help you maximize efficiency and minimize frustration during loading and unloading.
Consider Weight Capacity and Vehicle Limits
Every vehicle has a maximum roof load capacity, which includes the weight of the rack itself and the gear you place on it. It’s important to check both your vehicle’s manual and the specifications of the rack system you're considering.
For example:
A compact car might support 75–100 kg total
Larger SUVs or trucks can often handle more
Exceeding the weight limit may compromise vehicle handling or damage your roof
Always calculate the combined weight of the rack, mounting hardware, and cargo to stay within safe limits.
Focus on Ease of Use
Look for a roof system that’s not just functional, but also user-friendly. Consider the following:
Ease of installation: Can you mount it yourself, or does it require professional help?
Accessibility: Is it easy to reach and load items, especially on taller vehicles?
Locking mechanisms: Does it come with secure locks to prevent theft?
Aerodynamics: Does the design reduce wind noise and drag?
A well-designed rack can save you time and stress, especially if you plan to use it frequently or during long trips.
Durability and Material Quality
Roof systems are exposed to the elements year-round, so durability is key. Look for products made from high-grade materials like:
Aluminum: Lightweight, rust-resistant, and strong
Steel: Durable and robust but can be heavier
Composite or plastic: Used in some models for weatherproofing
Also, consider corrosion-resistant coatings and UV protection if you live in extreme climates. Reading customer reviews can help you evaluate long-term performance and real-world durability.
Budget and Brand Reputation
While it might be tempting to opt for a budget-friendly option, roof carriers are one area where quality should not be compromised. Well-known brands like Thule, Yakima, and Rhino-Rack have strong reputations for reliability, compatibility, and safety features.
Set a realistic budget and compare features before buying:
Does the rack come with a warranty?
Is customer support available?
Can you upgrade or expand it in the future?
A slightly higher upfront investment can pay off in durability and peace of mind.
Professional Installation vs. DIY
Some systems are easy to install at home, especially if your vehicle has factory-fitted rails. Others may require drilling, special tools, or calibration, which might be better left to professionals. When in doubt, consult the manufacturer or a trusted automotive technician to ensure safety and compliance.
Remember, improper installation can lead to accidents or damage—not just to your gear, but to other drivers on the road.
Maintenance and Safety Checks
Once installed, periodic checks are necessary to ensure the system remains secure and functional. Regularly inspect for:
Loose bolts or fittings
Rust or corrosion
Wear on straps or locks
Debris that may have accumulated in mounting points
Also, clean your rack regularly and store removable components in a dry, safe place when not in use.
Conclusion
Choosing the best rooftop system for your car involves balancing your specific travel needs with compatibility, quality, and safety. The right Roof Racks can completely transform your vehicle’s functionality—whether you're heading out on a weekend getaway or gearing up for a full-scale adventure. By taking the time to assess your cargo, vehicle limits, and usage preferences, you’ll be well-equipped to make a confident and informed decision.

Blind Rivets: Their uses explained
Blind rivets, often called pop rivets, are trusted fasteners for many workers and hobbyists. They join pieces from one side, making them ideal when the other side is hard or can't be reached. This guide explains what blind rivets are and how they are used in different fields.
What Are Blind (Pop) Rivets?
Blind rivets fasten materials by expanding from a single side. "Blind" means they can be placed with access to only one side. They get the name "pop" from the sound made as the mandrel, a pin inside the rivet, pops when pulled during install.
How They Work
Blind rivets have two main parts:
1. Rivet Body: A hollow tube that fits into a drilled hole.
2. Mandrel: A long pin inside the body, pulled to expand the rivet.
To use a pop rivet:
- Drill a hole through the materials.
- Insert the rivet with the mandrel extending.
- Use a rivet gun to pull the mandrel, expanding the rivet to grip the materials.
- The mandrel breaks away with a pop, creating a firm joint.
What Are Blind Rivets Used For?
Blind rivets are used in many fields because they are simple, strong, and need access from one side only. Here are some common uses:
1. Sheet Metal Work
For sheet metal tasks, like ductwork or roofing, blind rivets are often key. They join sheets quickly without welding or complex tools.
2. Vehicles and Transport
In cars, blind rivets attach body panels and parts in tight areas. They're used in trailers, buses, and RVs for their strength against vibration and wear.
3. Aircraft Parts
In aircraft, pop rivets secure panels and interior parts, often made of aluminium due to its strength and lightness.
4. Home Fixes and DIY Jobs
Homeowners and hobbyists use blind rivets for gutters, furniture, signs, or appliances—anywhere tight and clean fastening is needed.
5. Gadget Covers
In electronics, pop rivets give secure and tamper-resistant fixing for board mounts, casings, or brackets.
6. Building and Heavy Gear
Blind rivets secure railings, staircases, and frames in construction. Their toughness suits heavy-duty jobs.
Benefits of Using Pop Rivets
- One-Side Install: Great for tight spots.
- Fast: Needs little learning and is quick to install.
- Strong: Holds firm even with shaking or movement.
- Clean Look: No sticking parts, neat finish.
- Fits Many Materials: Available in metals like aluminium, steel, and stainless steel to suit needs.
Conclusion
Blind rivets, or pop rivets, are small but powerful. They're simple, strong, and flexible, preferred by professionals and hobbyists alike. Whether building planes, fixing fences, or putting together items, blind rivets provide a speedy and effective solution from one side.

Multifamily Investment Market Experiences Return to Growth
Tumblr media
Dragone Realty Investments (DRI) and its affiliated construction company have a track record of completing multifamily rehabilitation and renovation projects, such as managed properties across the Washington DC metro area. Its high-profile projects include renovating Lynnhill Condominiums in Prince George’s County, Maryland, rebranded as Verona at Naylor Metro.
The Temple Hills/Hillcrest Heights community comprises two seven-story buildings. The three-bedroom apartments and studio units have spacious floor plans. Situated near the expansive Oxon Run National Parkway, the location is within walking distance of the Naylor Road Station Metro, which provides an accessible commute to downtown Washington, DC.
In planning the renovation project, DRI focused on incorporating amenities that enhanced the residential experience, meeting contemporary life-safety standards. Before embarking on cosmetic renovations, the company oversaw extensive repairs that ensured the structural integrity of a property that had become dilapidated over time.
The DRI team undertook masonry and brick repairs and installed new energy-efficient balcony doors and windows on all units. It replaced balcony railings and designed and installed a custom metal louver, a fixed or adjustable horizontal slats system, for heating and cooling units. The louver provides airflow into the HVAC system, preventing dirt and debris intrusion. Louvers also help modulate and control airflow and temperature within the building and are part of energy-efficient design. They provide an aesthetic upgrade to bulky heat and cooling units attached to the exterior of buildings,
Moreover, the team focused on installing sturdy metal and concrete pan stairs instead of dangerously crumbling emergency stairs and removing all health-hazardous lead paint and asbestos.
Next, the team restored power building-wide. The electrical system had become stripped of cables and electrical wires, making the panels and circuits non-operational. While construction proceeded, temporary electrical panels, generators, and conducting cables ensured the functionality of equipment and fixtures. Ultimately, this provisional system gave way to a permanent system that included switch gears, wiring, electrical panels, and three-phase backup generators.
The old building lacked a fire suppression system. DRI designed a dedicated fire sprinkler system and fire pump room, with a transfer switch connecting the equipment with municipal power sources and backup generators. The team also replaced smoke detectors in common areas with interlinked regular and carbon monoxide smoke detectors, installing them in all hallways, elevator shafts, confined spaces, and units.
In addition, the DRI replaced the nonfunctional elevators with next-generation energy-efficient 4-traction passenger elevators. It also replaced the gravel roof on both buildings with a new TPO white flat roof, strengthening it and preventing leaks. Insulation crickets helped create a slope for better roof drainage, and they retrofitted new metal copings and roof pipes. Corridors and common areas received a state-of-the-art HVAC system mounted on the roof.
At this point in the project, subcontractors could finally tackle interiors, demolishing the insides of all units and installing kitchen cabinets, granite countertops, high-efficiency LED lighting, Venetian mini and vertical blinds, and sturdy kitchen cabinets. The county-code-compliant upgrades complemented exterior work, including a resurfaced and newly striped parking lot and the replacement of the old, decaying perimeter fencing.
Finally, the new gated community features a sophisticated access control system at building entrances and parking lots designed for cars and pedestrians. The result is an upgraded standard of living in a safe, secure, and comfortable community environment.
