So this'll probably sound kinda weird but sorta underworld themed mood board? Like Greek underworld with Hades and Persephone. i want to spit fire and scream at every establishment that uses unsafe ramps and inadequate 'accessible' restrooms and such. but it's always "sorry it's a really old building" or "i know it's not good but it was like this when we rented it" or "we can't afford a larger space for our shop". like ok. fine. you can't do anything about it. so who can? nobody, right? it's always nobody.

book 1 in a character-focused sff (with dystopian/horror elements) duology

set on a moon city populated by a highly intelligent semi-aquatic species with a strictly stratified society

a well-off politician / college director who is trying to use his position to challenge the corrupt upper strata organises to have one of his students smuggled out of the city after she’s accused of insurgency

he’s helped by maskad worker - those who are forcibly magically disfigured and made to wear masks, becoming the lowest strata - at the college, who’s able to guide the student to safety

but they catch the attention of powerful people, leading the two of them to be drawn together, developing a complicated friendship

I really enjoyed it!#I feel like I don’t read too many sff books with like; truly unique and new worldbuilding (that also have character/narratives that I enjoy #I liked the slow paced worldbuilding-and-character focused narrative.#Not everything is revealed about the world initially; but just naturally woven in. It’s all super interesting #from the knyad species and their society; to the biology and architecture details #and magic (which - is basically science using a particular substance).#There’s lots of discussion about class and disability too.#There is a glossary at the end which is useful if you’re feeling confused initially!#Love the contrasts of the two MCs & how they interact with the world and their developing friendship - can’t wait to see where that goes.#there’s a brief touch on the fact that since the species don’t procreate; relationships are different and less significant to them - though #There’s some flirting and hope for a relationship for once MC but it solidly doesn’t go anywhere #no romance #also: I always love when I’m reading a fantasy/sci-fi book and people use bicycles. like just the normal kind.#apidecca duology

im usually very adverse to watching films past 2010 but there's something really special about 2013 and 2017

#large reason being they dont feel fictitious enough #if you're gonna be wearing modern clothing and interacting with modern architecture and technology and existing within modern socio-economi #and political atmospheres while in that fictional situation it just either feels like overly cynical satire for some reason #or just way too Real to me. i have to give it a few years to cook. and also they're usually always worse than older stuff #it's like the mainstream has become desensitised to how much they suck. but that could also just be me not liking them #ALSO. relating to this it might be why i like stuff like ianowt a lot. it's like got a foot inside being a period piece #it's suspended in this timeless 70s/80s/90s cultural and aesthetic black hole while being very modern in terms of values material #if i ever made anything fiction like that i wanna suspend it in the 80s/90s/early 2000s #like bendis' run meets alias meets supernatural seasons one and two meets mid90s meets john hughs meets gregg araki

thursday: me (still punk like c'mon i'm waaaay too colourful for emo) and two literally just normal-ass looking guys just walking along the street

that same group of guys, most likely: OHH YOU'RE THE BIG HERO *something something* EMOS

literally i'm so confused?? one why do they feel the need to do that. two at least pick people who look like any alt style? like isn't it just embarrassing to call normal ass people emos for walking. like okay wednesday 2/3 looked alt but thurday? also why were they moaning. why do they think they're the hottest shit. why's the majority of (mostly cis boys but tbh it you get some from everyone) people my age so. unbearably stupid?

Checked out two Chicago Architecture Biennial Kick-off Programs today: The preview of Gelitin’s Democratic Sculpture 7 (a giant pizza guests stick their heads through to make the toppings) at the Chicago Cultural Center before it goes on exhibition at the Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society Sept. 23-Jan. 12 + The in-progress installation of ITECH’s HygroShell (a research project that explores a new kind of bio-based and bio-inspired architecture) at the James R. Thompson Center (second slide here). CAB 5 opens this November!
