One day in January I thought, "wouldn't it be hilarious if there was an episode where the camera crew changes places with a crew filming a documentary on werewolves in california. and everyone is playing a werewolf counterpart version of their character?" And it all devolved from there. Ty to @vampireshmampire and @memosminifridge for riffing with me and coming up with hilarious ideas <3
(ID in alt and under cut)
ID: 1. Title card, close up on a full moon glowing blue, surrounded by swirls of fog and bands of purple, blue, and green light. Overlaid is tht title "What We Do Under The Moon" in the What We Do In The Shadows font, letters dark blue with a brighter blue to purple gradient at the bottom, backlit in white.
2. Wide shot of the werewolf character played by Kayvan Novak doing a talking head. He is wearing medium wash jeans, a grey tee shirt over a millennial pink vest, a small gold medallion around his neck with a matching crescent moon earring, and has his long wavy hair half up in a messy bun. He is sitting on a light cream L-shaped couch adjacent to a glass patio door letting in the sunlight and below a wall hanging that says 'live, laugh, lick'. The lower third identifies him as "Navid - beta werewolf". Navid leans back casually against the cushions and props one elbow up on the back of the couch, leaning his head into that hand, and says, "If I am to establish myself as the Alpha of the pack over Lionel and Niki, I must find a mate. Someone strong, powerful, and...nearby. In the same house even, if possible." As he speaks, he glances meaningfully to his left, where the character played by Harvey Guillen is standing behind the couch, his back to Navid as he fusses with a vacuum. He is wearing square retro glasses, airpods in both ears, brown chinos, and a short sleeved green button up unbuttoned to the sternum with a dog silhouette pattern and sleeves rolled up his biceps. His beard is well-kept stubble and hair is buzzed short on the sides, curls pushed to the side in artful disarray and sun-bleached a lighter brown.
3a. Close up on Harvey's character as he walks down the hall away from Navid's talking head. In the background, Navid whips around to lean over the back of the couch with an expectant grin, howling, "Gerardo!! Eavesdropping again? Do you have anything to add to this topic?" Gerardo barely pays him mind, tossing his reply over his shoulder: "No, sir. Seems like a werewolf-only interview. I'm going to go vacuum the alpha den, they've been shedding." 3b. Waist-up of Gerardo standing with his arms crossed, doing a talking head. The lower third reads "Gerardo Cordero de Luna, werewolf familiar (familiar is crossed out) apprentice." Gerardo says haughtily, "I am not a familiar! Only witches and vampires pull that nonsense. I'm an apprentice, and I'm part of the pack." 3c. Repeat. Offscreen, one of the crew asks, "And what does a werewolf apprentice do?" Gerardo goes a bit red, embarrassed, and glares off to the side, hesitating to answer.
The following are all cropped close ups on a mottled orange and yellow background from a colored doodle dump. 4. Waist up of Gerardo and Navid as Navid begs, hands laced together, "Gerardo, won't you let me bite you?" Gerardo avoids his gaze with a nervous grin, flapping his hand dismissively, and replies, "Ehh...not yet! There's still plenty for me to learn about being a werewolf! I've only been apprenticed what, 3 years?" "Almost 15!" Navid shoots back.
5a. Knees up of Navid and Natasia Demetriou's werewolf character, Niki. She is wearing dark red gradient high waisted leggings, a dark red low cut bralette with crossed straps in front, a fluffy cropped brown fur coat, a gold medallion matching Navid's, and multiple golden piercings in her ears with two large oval discs dangling from the lobes. Her lipstick and square cut nails are dark red, and her long hair is permed in tight fluffy curls half up in twin buns. Navid grabs his left wrist with his right hand and thrusts it at Niki's face with an anxious expression, asking, "I smell like I love him, right??" Niki curls her lip and cringes away from him, hands up to swat his arm away as she spits back, "Ugh, yes!! You stink up the whole house with your pining! There's no way he can't smell it." 5b. Knees up of Gerardo sitting on a light cream couch, reading from a book titled "Care for the Lonely Werewolf" help up in his right hand. Navid is laying across the couch, sans vest and hair loose, with his head resting on Gerardo's left thigh. His right hand is trapped beneath him, fingers hooked at the back of Gerardo's knee, and his left rests on top beneath his cheek. Gerardo's left hand his idly petting his hair. Navid stares intently into the middle distance, thinking, 'Perhaps I should be less aloof with him...'
6a. Bust of Gerardo, who is holding up an iPad in his left hand with a drawing stylus poised in his right. Navid, large and hairy in werewolf form but still sporting his dangly earring and little hair bun, is hugging him from behind, clawed hands on his shoulders and wet nose nuzzling into the side of his face. Navid's eyes are closed and his mouth is hanging open, tongue lolling out happily. Gerardo looks up at him with a fond, if confused, smile. 6b. Knees up of Navid raising a triumphant fist with a grin and confidently declaring, "He is playing hard to get, but he underestimates how hard I am to get rid of!"
7a. Waist up of Matt Berry's werewolf character, Lionel, who looks much the same but is casual in a light cream linen shirt unbuttoned well below his sternum tucked into matching linen pants, his only accessory the gold medallion matching the others'. He is standing in front of a countertop hosting a box of Thin Mints and cringes away with a drawn-out whine as Gerardo pops into frame to spray him with water, scolding, "No, bad Lionel!" 7b. Waist up of Mark Proksch's character, who appears to just be Colin Robinson dressed like Indiana Jones, as he walks into frame with a rolling suitcase. He smiles and waves, shouting, "Howdy, guys!!" Lionel stands in the background, hands on hips with an easy smile, and says. "Oh, look, it's our landlord Arthur Simon Santiago who lives such an interesting life in New York City and uses this condo as a vacation home!"
8. Group shot, knees up, of Lionel, Niki, Gerardo, and Navid smiling for the camera. Lionel has one hand on his hip and the other around his wife's waist, leaning into her. Niki has one arm thrown around Lionel's shoulders, flashing a peace sign, and the other held up behind Navid's head to give him bunny ears. Gerardo is standing slightly in front of her, one hand clutching a pamphlet for Tisch School of the Arts and looking a bit uncomfortable as if he had been dragged into the photo last minute. Still, he offers the camera a hesitant smile and allows his left arm to be crushed to Navid's chest as the werewolf pulls him close with an arm around his shoulders. Navid leans his entire body into Gerardo with a huge grin, flashing a peace sign with his free hand.
9. Uncropped version of the entire doodle dump, repeating images 4 through 8. /end ID

Hope you all enjoy our recs for November ❤️ (even though they're a little late!!) Incenatus by @missgeevious (book/movie-verse)
@suseagull04: I can't recommend this fic enough! If you love Twilight and The Phantom of the Opera, this fic is for you! A mysterious masquerade, a soulmate connection, and chemistry that's off the charts all culminate to make this one of my new all-time favorite fics!
Meaning Something by bleedingballroomfloor (book-verse)
@dot524: Really enjoyed this Liam POV that goes deeper into what actually happened with Alex and Liam, his relationship with Spencer, and how Liam reacts to Alex & Henry during the book. The feelings & coming out are really well done.
Needy & Greedy by @clottedcreamfudge (book-verse)
@heybuddy-drabbles: It's been HELL of a month in good and bad ways so I didn't have time to read much. I'm choosing to recommend a series of unconnected one shots, all steamy and delicious and fun and short for casual reading when you don't have much time to commit to a 70k fic. If you like smut tis for you!
Taste the Way You Bleed by @cha-melodious (book-verse)
@myheartalivewrites: a super fun What We Do In the Shadows AU, written for the RWRB halloween fest. Alex and Henry are oblivious vampires, pining for centuries, and the rest of the super-six turn up in hilarious mockumentary-style interviews. The summary alone had me HOOKED.
Camp Llwynywermod by bleedingballroomfloor (book-verse)
@myheartalivewrites: one of my go-to for comfort, all time fave fics. Alex and Henry as co summer camp counsellors, pining and bickering for years. The tension is top notch!
@dot524: It’s funny and I really enjoyed the camp setting and their journey from enemies to friends to lovers. This is a fun and cute fic.
Downburst by @cricketnationrise (book-verse)
@rmd-writes: an AU of The West Wing ep 'In the Shadow of Two Gunmen' - mind the tags, this is an angsty but beautifully written fic with very clever use of multiple POVs to tell several stories of love (including platonic love). This is so good I was mad I didn't write several lines in it myself.
@thesleepyskipper: Truly an incredible and unique work that was done with care. The way the various memories/flashbacks are done and how they are used as part of the storytelling absolutely blew me away. Loved that we got multiple POVs here too!
Underground by @zwiazdziarka (book-verse)
@suseagull04: An adorable kid, fantasy (including mentions of fantasy classics!) and a rescue mission make this such a fun read! The world building in this fic is phenomenal too.
A Long Way From the Playground by @three-drink-amy (book-verse)
@dot524: This is a getting-back-together AU where Alex & Henry were childhood friends who grew apart in college and then unexpectedly are neighbors. I enjoyed the slow burn here and the payoff — it’s just a comforting feel-good fic!
Five-Drink Henry by @whimsymanaged (book-verse)
@daisymae-12: I was honestly already hooked from the title and the fic did not disappoint – so much so that I’ve reread it so many times the past month. Loved everything about this fic!!
The Domestication of Household Spiders by @cultofsappho (book-verse)
@daisymae-12: This was everything I didn’t know I needed from a spiderman AU! Loved it so much. There’s also 2 new recent fics published in this series – plenty of spiderman Alex to read!!
you make it look so easy, i know it's not by @anincompletelist (book-verse)
@daisymae-12: A really fun fic about Henry’s first American Thanksgiving not quite going to plan. I was already laughing from the summary alone
The great turkey calamity? by @smblmn (book-verse)
@zwiazdziarka: This fic tells us what is actually means to talk turkey and this once Cornbread is a star he deserves to be. It's crack, it's exsistential crisis, it's hilarious. Oh, and Alex and Henry fall in love here too.
Lay You Down by ronans (book-verse)
@inexplicablymine: when I tell you the fluff is fluffing, Henry runs a sleep YouTube and Alex is in his comment section and in his DM’s and in his head. Do yourself a favor if you need a sweet treat today and read this work
@thesleepyskipper: OMG this could not be any cuter. I loved the way we got to see their relationship grow as they got to know each other online. Truly an adorable, well-written story that will plaster a smile on your face throughout.
Risk is Just a Board Game by @three-drink-amy (book-verse)
@suseagull04: Angst, domestic fluff, college AU, the holidays- this fic has it all! A look at why friends with benefits isn't always the best idea that culminates in an ending reminiscent of a Hallmark movie.
On My Mind (Let's Go) by @sparklepocalypse (movie-verse)
@zwiazdziarka: contrary to popular fanon, Henry can dance and here he uses that to get what he wants on New Year's Eve party. No notes, just go and read it.

So like, hear me out. 👏🏼🤔
Armand & DM Theory
Paris:
Armond orchestrates *the play* and brings Lestat into it in Paris because he has convinced himself (through his perspective of Louis and their relationship) that Louis will never pick *him* over Claudia. Over Lestat.
So he gets pissed that Lestat (essentially, in his perspective) got one over on him *again* and decides fuck it- I’ll kill them all and finally Lestat will be as miserable and alone as me (also if he comes crawling to me for companionship in the future.. we could talk about it then).
So that’s why it seems there was no planned way to get Louis out of the death sentence. Perhaps Louis really was supposed to die with Claudia.
So then Lestat saves Louis and *just in his luck* Louis thinks Armand did it. And I mean, Armand is king of lies and deception so it’s easy enough to go along with it. *On top of that* he gets to be apart of Louis’ plan for revenge against Lestat. Armand is quite *literally* getting all of his dreams fulfilled.
San Francisco:
Only for the steam that was moving the spite train along (aka Loumand’s relationship) to slowly fizzle out and grow stagnant. Only for both Armand and Louis to be in a state a free fall. Louis turns to those boys he’d take back to his apartments and Armand, well, he doesn’t know what to do with himself. He got what he wanted, right? So what did he do now that it turned to ash in his mouth?
Enter Daniel and his cute-little, drugged-out face. Fascinating. Daniel’s reaction to Louis’ story causes the whole mess in San Francisco and he’s sent packing with altered memories.
Devils Minion:
But Armand doesn’t forget. And he kind of starts obsessing over it. Over Daniel. Louis’ words ringing in his ears. Words that Louis himself no longer remembers and therefore reverts back to how he was just before the interview. A pale shadow of his former self with no passion for Armand whatsoever.
So Armand starts tracking down Daniel. Just to get a glimpse of who he is and what’s so great about him. But it turns into full-on obsession and we get a version of the Devils Minion. They have a long, sordid and dark romance throughout the 70s *and* 80s. The details of the mind wipes can be any of the available options.
There’s some sort of breaking point and eventually Armand feels he has to erase all of Daniel’s memories of him and their relationship. Whether it’s to protect himself because he doesn’t fully trust Daniel yet, he thinks he might cave and make him a vampire, or he simply wants to stop being selfish in his love and wants Daniel to live a full, human life without his influence. Whichever reason he has for it- Daniel forgets it all.
Dubai:
Then *years later*, Louis eventually finds himself back at that threshold he was at in San Francisco and is itching to tell his story again. No matter Louis’ reasons for it, Armand sees it as a second suicide letter… but also sees it as the opportunity it affords *him*… To at least see Daniel again.
So they summon Daniel and Armand convinces Louis to go along with his Rashid disguise, saying it’s because of San Francisco when it’s really so he doesn’t trigger any DM memories in Daniel *and* to make sure Louis doesn’t hurt Daniel this time.
If all goes well after the interview, Louis and Daniel would get what they wanted out of it and Armand can see Daniel again without triggering his memories/ruining his human life and keep Daniel safe from Louis.
However, Louis fucks that up and Armand has to unmask.
From there on out, he knows Daniel is a ticking time bomb of memories and emotions and complications. And yet he involves himself in the interview, even when he doesn’t even want it to be happening in the first place. Because he knows how much it means to both Louis *and* Daniel. He tries to hide parts of himself, out of regret of what he did in Paris (cause he really does regret it knowing he misread his relationship with Louis) and so that the details of his life and of his true self don’t pop up and trigger anything in Daniel’s mind.
But then he realizes the Talamasca has gotten involved, being able to read at least Daniel’s mind if not Rashid’s. He knows his time with Louis is slowly drawing to a close, but he also feels like there’s nothing he can do to stop it. Not *really*.
So Daniel spills the beans about Paris. Lestat was the one to save Louis and wasn’t apart of the orchestration of Claudia’s death. And all the spite that fueled their union crumbles, and Armand is staring down the barrel of an eternity alone.
He’s not mad at Daniel, not really. It’s actually quite impressive that he got it all figured out and had proof.
But since Armand doesnt want to ruin Daniel’s human life- and he doesn’t want to be alone- he chases Louis.
Then as Louis is telling him not to touch Daniel- the reality of his life hits him. Armand has lived his life worshiping. Gods. Devils. Vampires. Lovers. That’s how he thought love worked.
And he knows full well that his relationship with Louis has never been about him. It’s been about Lestat. Of course he knows that. But the loneliness of that statement hits him square in the chest, looking up under his eyelashes at the vampire who has shackled them to each other and the boy who has always allowed him to be free. To be himself. To be fucked up and okay with it. The boy who he never worshiped in his love, for it was probably the purest of love he’s ever experienced.
Of course he’d never hurt Daniel. Not in the implied malicious ways that Louis means. But Louis wouldn’t know that. Neither would Daniel.
The Future:
So Louis leaves. Maybe it’s in Dubai or it’s sometime later in another place but Armand finds Daniel and tells him he knows what his doctors have been saying. Daniel’s dying. He doesn’t have much time left.
Something said in this conversation triggers another memory for Daniel. And he asks about it, and maybe a few others he got flashes of while in Dubai but didn’t tell Louis about. And Armand makes a decision. Daniel is dying, Louis is gone, and he will forever be alone.
So he gets selfish and emotional and full of love and gives Daniel all of his memories back. They spend time delving through all of it and Daniel asks him to stay with him, until the end. He family, his ex wives, his kids no where to be seen. He’s ruined the biggest gift he ever got from Armand- his human life. And now as he’s dying, he just wants Armand to stay. To finally say yes and stop running away.
And he does. Until the day finally comes- it’s a small shift but Armand knows what a body *sounds* like when it’s giving out. Dying out. He tells Daniel and tries to hold himself back from asking to turn him. And when the hour grows ever nearer… Daniel asks in a whisper, in a delusion, in a prayer.
And Armand falls to his knees, turning him before either one of them can think on it more.
After it’s done and Daniel has taken to vampirism like a champ… Armand realizes he can no longer hear Daniel’s thoughts. He knew it would come, as it always does, but the lack of insight (lack of control) hits him like a tidal wave.
And Daniel realizes some of his memories were not restored before, just by mistake, and feels relief at having all of his mortal memories back and all of the emotions related to it. But before he can talk to Armand, ask for guidance in this chapter in his un-life and delve further into their past, Armand leaves. Skips out.
And Daniel does the only thing he knows how to do. The only thing he’s ever been good at: His job.
Cut to that scene in 2x08.
*fin*

WHAT WE DI IN THE SHADOW EPISODE 8 SPOILERS
What if Nandor realizes that he doesn’t want to lose Guillermo, after he thought that he died in episode 8, and finally decides to MAKE HIM A VAMPIRE.
He expresses this to his housemates and they all visibly panic as they know the truth and try to change his mind, but he is DEAD SET. He does NOT want to ever ever be without Guillermo again.
So he prepares this propose-like set up: dim light with a lot of candles leading to Nandors room, where he is waiting. Has a whole vampire/gay speech prepared and is just melting in front of Guillermo, the man who has been there for him unconditionally for so long. Then go comes to the part when he offers Guillermo the bite.
But Guillermo just stands there, absolutely horrified, because this is the moment he dreaded for so many weeks. He tried to postpone telling Nandor but now he can no longer do that. He has to face the consequences of his actions. He. Panics. He just runs (that’s when we get the Exit interview episode), because that is the only solution to their situation he can think of.
And Nandor just stands there.
Confused. And heartbroken.

would a like minds reference fit in a vampire story? the main character has a vampire they know and used to be friends with, this friend turned them but then ran off immediately, would it work to make it literally just alex and nigel as vampires or am i hyperfixating too hard? for context, im going on what we do in the shadows vampire turning logic (they drink your blood then you drink theirs and its a really horrible transformation process)
First I will say this: You can do whatever you want forever, especially when it comes to writing fiction. Second, I do think it makes perfect sense within the nature of the Like Minds story. The premise of the movie is easily translated into the context of vampire or other monster types that involve being turned into something against your will, fighting against or struggling with that transformation, but eventually giving in and embracing it. I can assure you that you're not the only one to have considered a vampire AU type story with them. I say go for it. And then post it here and on AO3 so we can all enjoy the ride with you, of course!
For some visual inspo, please see this beautiful art by @banancrumbs, inspired by Interview with the Vampire (and also all of her other Like Minds pieces which are SO GOOD).
Also also, fwiw, that's more or less the standard conception for vampire turning in most of the stories I've read/watched, and I'm a long time fan of such things. It works well as a more literal version of the relationship between the two boys as Alex describes it (though whether his tale is accurate is another matter).

Interview with the Vampire S2E7- Liveblog
I could not prevent it
Why are Claudia and Louis not communicating telepathically. He is screaming out to her not even knowing if she is around. He even says he he didnt know if she was alive but surely telepathically would be better but I guess he is panicking
I love the mutual respect Daniel and Louis have built. Louis says I am talking now and Daniel shuts the hell up. AND APOLOGIZES
God Santiago and his blue eyes shadow are SERVING (looks and injustice!)
Louis says the vampires 'used their collective powers to disorient their minds, their hearing(jaws compressing the skull)' him and Claudia when they tried to speak out. The shaky camera was cool this first time
Claudia looks ok after coming out the rat box is lol, Louis looked more f-ed up
God Madeline is out of it! Sis is on a different planet. What did Santiago do to her?
When I saw their tendons cut in the trailer I started crying, I just knew we were in for it but the trail as a whole wasn't as bloody as I thought it would be
This swelling music introducing Lestat was beautiful. Can't lie it had me smiling
Walk walk fashion baby
Claudia's withering look and Louis look of pain. My heart
That first look that Lestat gives its almost like a marionette very unnatural
He is looking SNATCHED in that pinstripe suit. But also lets talk about the pinstripe because we know LAST season the costume designer said they used stripes when the characters felt imprisoned
Louis face when Lestat says its a story of LOVE. Lestats wet eyes god these two
The Vampire Sam blocking Armands exit. Armands?! Sam?!? If it were Celeste or any of the others we have seen more ferocious or active in the coven anyone might have bought it but SAM lol
Armand told Louis he was held captive and his punishment was to watch ok Jan
I LOVE the animations. Lestat doing a entrechat six into the dirt (that ballet knowledge coming in handy!)
He slept for 100 years saying his only sustenance the ancient blood already inside him. AKASHA??
ugh the look of disdain Lestat gives Santiago for being forced to play long/recite these lines
Be precise in your declarations advocate🤝🏾 we should get ever y detail right
Louis favorite cuss is definitely Fuck lol
I love the irrdecent glint they have added to vampires eyes this season
Eglee scouting her next boyfriend like-oh you put your fist through a skull. Thats hot
Lestat putting bigots in their place. oh no when the worst person alive says something you agree with meme
Claudia standing up for Louis during the trail<3. Yelling at Santiago earlier to stop hurting him, yelling at the crowd for laughing at him. This girl loved her dad ok.
'Louis was deceptively agile with words" AND?! I support him. I said you start it, Louis is gonna end it. Someone on here said you go low and Louis goes straight to hell and its true! Don't play with him and you wont get your feeling hurt. PERIOD
I loved the vampoire lonliness bit but I hated that CGI tear
Not Santiago doing Claudias accent rearding from her diary. lol BITCH
"You do not know this girl!."She is a stranger and Louis knows how turning a stranger feels like now
The over acting! "THE GREAT LAWS FORBID IT" So clear he was trying to paint himself in a great light but we can be relatively certain that lestat did not say this since both Claudia and Louis repeat that Lestat didn't tell them anything regarding laws or even other vampires existence. There would have been more questions if he did
I DO believed he warned him but not to the extent we see and I'm sure Louis didn't bargin himself like that. How could be?
She asked if I was an Angel.Me? oh my poor Saint Louis
Look at her our beautiful little daughter as he drags her half dead body on the floor. ugh??
What is this look that Armand is giving Louis when he says thats how it happened but I didn't think it at the time. I don't trust him at all. IS THAT HOW IT HAPPENED OR IS IT HOW ARMAND WANTS YOU TO THINK IT HAPPENED TO COMPOUND YOUR GUILT ABOUT HER TURNING?
I hate this?! is it all lies??
Holy crap DREAMSTAT!?
Louis slightly shakes his head in agreement when Lestat at first we just slammed each other around the town house. Seven years of compromise, denail it all gave way...The reached a tipping point they drove each other crazy. I can see it happening like Lestat decribes maybe not over the top villain vibes but definitely getting ugly like that. And like someone mentioned in the short chat I was in earlier- Louis is capable of making good on those threats. Look what happened with the alderman, the guy in the cruising park.
I can't believe the fall was not explained away or a mistaken memory like i thought and was absolutely not worthy of forgiveness...but i guess maybe in a fucked up way Louis thought it was penance for withholding admittance of his love even as Lestat begged him in the sky
The apolgy was a little melodramatic and had me thinking it might be in the script but Daniel said it was not on the page, Maybe Sam couldn't rein it in at that moment lol
How fucking sad Claudia's trail isn't even about her. The talks to both Louis and Lestat at multiple points and they don't or barely acknowledge her. Truly a pawn in their fucked up romance
Lestat looked physically sick when Claudia and Louis were pleading to him. You gonna accept my apology. Is this your big revenge. If he could I think he would have stopped it but I think the vamps were controlling him in a way( like they were doing with Claudia and Louis OR its the Sophies choice everyone is quoting. Its Louis or Claudia and he is choosing Louis
Mr I could not prevent it looking around the trail crowd pleased curiosity
I am so happy to proven wrong and Madeline choose Claudia.I was thinking that it might be another bombshell it would be revealed that she was only interested in vampirism. Finally she is 1st
Madeline flipping off the jury. Good girl
Claudia cursing the audience in her final moments on earth. yes girl!
I feel like the look shared between Claudia and Lestat right after was you liked that and his response look was that was quite good.
Oh how I hoped Lestat would at least try to save her..break script again but he almost looks immobilzed-again the vamps?
Claudia's death was horrid with better effects that Louis burn away earlier in the season.Ugh
How fuckin disrespectful they leave their ashes on stage like that. THEY HAVE TO SCATTER THEM!
Wow I can't believe I survived episode 7 with out crying. Definitely some close calls but I didn't.It was unexpectedly funny and Claudia going out like a G! helped a lot. Amazing episode.

Prejudgement: Jacob Anderson – Face of 'Woke' & 'Unnecessary'
Summary and disclosure:
This will be a series formatted post on the topic of Interview with the Vampire AMC and the reactions of Fandom before the airing of Season One. Following the conversations around the choices of casting and concentrating on the issues on some public takes.
This post will be used for reference in future posts on this blog. This post discusses racism. This post contains mature language.
Part One | Understanding: Permission, Author & Fandom
As a person who has been passively taking in fanwork for the majority of my life and not knowing it, I could not understand how it feels to be part of an hyper-active fandom. Nor did I understand how one feels to be in it.
The fandoms I have been a part of that I can compare to Interview with the Vampire is: Hannibal (HBO), Teen Wolf and Shadow Hunters.
By the time I came into the fandom it was already "dead" – meaning that the show had aired and 'finished' airing and not much discourse was around it. So what did I do to be considered part of this fandom and passively interacting?
Well I created pins, created Moodboards and watched some edits on YouTube and TikTok (when it became famous during 2020). And for a few of the fandoms I read Fanfics. Completed ones mainly mind you.
So imagine how unprepared I was going into Interview with the vampire fandom. Of course there was excitement. I was going to be one of those people that would see a Tumblr post on Pinterest and be able to say:

Who wouldn't be excited? I was there when Cord of Communion by weathermood was written which is crazy to say now that I think about. One of the most loved and well known Interview with the vampire Fics. I was there when the Helen of Troy meme started. It was absolutely insane. I felt like someone who had invested in Bitcoin and feeding off its success.
But I was not part of the fandom who came from the original text. And I - as someone who held themselves in high regard to come from those who read the books before the movies came into existence - put them in high regard.
This did not last as I realised that those who I put on high regard did not in fact want me - a black person - in the fandom. Or at least that is how I felt. Just as I felt when Ariel was casted black. I was quickly losing interest in the fandom I so desperately wanted to be in.
Let's start from the beginning:

On May 13, 2020 AMC announced that it entered an agreement to acquire Anne Rice's major literary works. It further continued to state in the article that Anne Rice herself was excited for her works to be represented so wholly and that she was more than satisfied with the deal. Anne Rice's son was also announced to be supportive and working alongside Rolin Jones.
It's acknowledged how big the franchise is with a large number of fans behind the works. This is said, paraphrased obviously, by Rolin Jones himself.
And I mean the guy is right. Damn is he right. Anne Rice works, especially The Vampire Chronicles in my experience, has a huge fan base. The Vampire Chronicles has, to this current date I'm writing in have over 3000 works on AO3. Has a different forum of Reddit from just the authors name to the works themselves.

And let's not forget those on Tumblr from tags to people dedicated to the series and the author.

Rolin Jones was making an adaptation of Anne Rice's works. Had permission to do so. Now before we go on let's look at the definition of Adaptation:
a film, book, play, etc. that has been made from another film, book, play, etc.: From Cambridge Dictionary.
A more descriptive meaning:

I am a firm believer that this would have changed and avoided many harmful idealogies and actions in the fandom. But I digress.
A fandom is described as to a community of people who are passionate about something, whether it’s a film, a band, a television show, a book, or a sports team. (x)
A fandom is important because it provides opportunities to connect with other like-minded individuals. It also serves a purpose of allowing easy discovery from an interest into another range of interest. More importantly: Fandom can shape and influence decisions of the media and how they interact with the show. Along with the creative decision of the creator.
The fandom of Interview with the vampire was already established from The Vampire Chronicles. People had a predispositioned idea on what to expect. The fandom in this time were, to no surprise, predominantly white fans. Not to say that no POC existed within this fandom that they were not the majority.
At the time of the announcement it did not make many waves to the unsuspecting people in the outside world. But the Fandom took note of this. [Obviously] Conversations and interviews were watched and re-watched of Anne Rice throughout the years and comments were made. This was about 4 to 3 years ago.
The casting was not released. No one really knew what was planned for these shows and when they would be aired. At this time I was still in my Hannibal obsession and the only thing about Interview with the vampire was from a meme with a white man saying: Not gay enough. On my Pinterest board.

So I cannot speak about my experience during this time in the fandom [though I do encourage people who were around this time to share your experiences with me if you want I'm curious how it was for different people] but the general consensus was trepidation and excitement.
I can understand this because not only did the fandom go around feeling like drug dealers in threat of getting busted by the police when writing and publishing Fanfic at the time but also Fanart and even Comics were made because of the love these people had for The Vampire Chronicles.

The fandom had an already made up idea on what this would mean for them. One of these ideas was definitely NOT a Black, Creole, 4b haired and green eyed vampire. Almost completely different from white, raven-chin length hair and green eyed Louis. But I'm getting ahead of myself.
At this time I can only imagine how the fandom was feeling about the adaptation because as much I can do further research and deep dive into digital foot print I do not have that kind of time in my hands at this point in my life.
Anne Rice works, I will say again, were celebrated and she was held in high regard by supernatural-loving fans. She was – and still – seen as the Mother of Modern Vampires and the depiction in media. She has influenced many well known and famous Vampire media such as Twilight and True Blood.
So I'm left with only imagining how it somewhat felt like for people looking forward to Disney live actions and the Teen Wolf movie. [The fandom was large in size but apparently not large enough to be a few hours of Google search away to be able to find out about the discourse around this point in time.]
But AMC worked fast (kudos to them honestly) and the next year around August of 2021. They came out with the main casting and...
Jacob Anderson was announced as our [cherished and loved] Louis du Lac of today.
This made waves in the fandom and lit the seat of the loyal fans to write about the current happenings in their fandom to all media platforms. Tumblr, Reddit, YouTube, Twitter X, etc.
As much as there were hesitant joy over it and encouragement over the happenings there was also...a lot of upset over the fans.

Shortly after this announcement Anne Rice died in December of 2021 [RIP🕊️]. She and her son had been working closely on the adaptation with Rolin Jones. Anne was survived by her son who stayed in the process of the production. This will ultimately be both significant and insignificant in the grand scheme of things regarding the fandom's reaction to everything before the airing of the Pilot episode of Interview with the Vampire AMC.
At this time I was also still absent from the fandom. Or rather I should say I was being introduced to the Pilot episode through one fated AMC TikTok promotion edit.
I was not online as much and thus wasn't affected as much during that time. Unknowing of the discourse around the Casting and the upcoming trailers brewing. I simply just saved the TikTok in my favourites and promised to watch it for later.
Though I can understand and sympathise at a certain point with the upset over the casting choices because as a book reader I can understand we do kinda gatekeep shit. But only up to a certain point because I get over it fast.
I understand what an adaptation is and what it means. It will mostly never mean a direct copy and paste of the book.
The cards had been shuffled and handed out and the game was about to begin. Word got around and before the airing of the Pilot episode of what would be the one of the most influencial piece of media to me, the people's feelings were simmering and were ready to burst.
How the audience reacted would forever determine what the Fandom looks now and how people interpret the characters. Unfortunately, in the long run, this transformation was not positive. But some, to this day would disagree.

What We Do in the Shadows: A Weekend at Morrigan Manor/Exit Interview (5x09/10)
Oh boy. Lots to discuss.
Cons:
The biggest con I have here is... well, if Guillermo was going to be made back into a human at the end of the season, I wish we'd gotten to see more of vampire Guillermo. I actually don't mind narratively this turn where he goes back to being human, but why couldn't we see a whole season of him getting to be a bat and go flying and do all the other vampire things, in full-swing? That way the fact that he's not ready would hit a little harder: he can't bring himself to drink human blood, which is the only way he can continue to be a vampire, even though he's experienced all the perks. I just think that would have been a more fun way to play it. Instead, we spent a whole season waiting and waiting to finally actually see vampire Guillermo, and we... never fully got that at all. He did look good with those fangs, though.
Pros:
The Morrigan Manor stuff was so charming and fresh and different. I truly had no idea where this episode was going to go, from the invitation, to the amazing fencing choreography with Lazlo and his large group of combatants... I even thought the Guide's role in the story added something fun.
All season I've been complaining that they haven't done enough with the whole vibe of her being an outsider, but in this episode, when she finally takes matters into her own hands, I did feel the weight of her relative insignificance all season, finally coming to bear. I realized pretty soon she had to be behind all the disappearances, but it was still fun to see it play out. And I like how she acts as a contrast to Guillermo, who now feels included in the group in various ways. One good moment is at the beginning, when the recording says "six of you" and they're confused about the number six, because they were forgetting to count the Guide. Which means they think of their family as being five people, and that includes Guillermo. So sweet!
And the moment of truth... everyone else trying to distract Nandor form realizing the big secret... Nadja: "I like this cage." That was so funny. The reason that a ridiculous show like this works is that when they want to play up something other than the laughs, they don't shy away from that. All season we've been told that once Nandor learned the truth about Guillermo, he'd kill him and then himself. And then he finds out, conveniently locked in a silver cage, and what does he say? That he's going to kill Guillermo. It's not funny, his rage is played 100% earnestly.
It's also cut up really humorously with Nandor instantly figuring out why Guillermo is only a half-baked vampire. His slayer blood from his Van Helsing family is interfering with his transformation. Everybody else is just like "ohhhhh" but I think this is such a great detail to include, that Nandor actually pays attention and knows enough about Guillermo, has given all of this enough thought, that he instantly knows what's going on.
Lazlo remembering the right tape to play to get the Guide to forgive them was also really funny. I knew instantly there would be a punchline where they undercut their kindness towards her right after Lazlo has the tape cut off, and I like that the Guide doesn't see the mid-credit bit like we do, where it turns out they're trying to get Colin to fall in love with the Guide so they become a couple and move out and leave the rest of them alone. Lazlo continues to get my season MVP award, for being clever enough to manipulate the Guide!
The second episode is full of so much great Guillermo goodness, I don't even know where to start. I think the big thesis of this season is that Guillermo is family with the other vampires in the house. He already achieved that closeness, and in fact it was sort of in spite of becoming a vampire, not because of it. We see it in the way that Nadja, Colin, and Lazlo all sneak off to say goodbye to Guillermo, as they believe he'll be dead soon at the hands of Nandor. The episode with the Guide reminded us that these vampires are never necessarily going to be open about their feelings; they'll care about each other on their own terms, and it doesn't mean they don't treasure those relationships. Guillermo has learned that now, and that being a vampire, something he still greatly wants, isn't the only way to connect with his chosen family.
I love that Nandor just straight-up murders Patton Oswalt, like, he's dead within the What We Do in the Shadows universe now and it's so fucking funny. Especially the fact that he gives good advice, Nandor kills him in punishment, and then is like "he has a good point, though..."
And again with this show knowing when to play something dead sincere, I love how Nandor's grief and anger is over-exaggerated but one hundred percent earnest, too. He says that he can't imagine anything more painful than having to kill his friend. And then he makes a promise to Guillermo, holding a stake to his own throat, in his original language of Persian, that he will spare his life. It was... well, it was charged, to say the least.
Also played entirely sincere was Guillermo's grief and discomfort over the thought of killing people. It's rendered comedic by the fact that he's killed so many vampires, and lured so many innocent humans to their deaths, but it makes sense that the actual drinking of innocent human blood would feel different to him. Nandor knows him well enough to understand that this isn't what Guillermo really wants.
There's something so narratively satisfying and also funny about Nandor being the one in the dark all season, having no idea what's going on, and then once he's in the know, he has sole custody of the only damn brain cell in the whole group. He figures out how to forgive Guillermo, he figures out what his friend really needs, and even guides him into discovering that for himself.
Even Derek gets a happy ending, hopefully to make friends with his new zombie brethren, where he might fit in the way he never did among vampires!
I've seen a lot of people online disappointed with this finale, calling it an anti-climax and a letdown that Guillermo and Nandor didn't kiss on the mouth or whatever. On some level I do understand that disappointment, in the sense that I wish we'd gotten to have more fun shenanigans with vampire!Guillermo while we had him, instead of this half-assed version of it all season. But at the same time, that's the nature of this kind of comedy show. If you divert from the status quo, the show kind of... ends. And we've seen such huge development this year for Guillermo, in the way he is now given the kind of respect from his chosen family that he's long pined for.
And that's that for season five! I really deeply love this show, all the crazy shenanigans of this bizarre cast of characters. I'm ready for season six whenever they have it prepared for us!

What vampire films/shows would you recommend?
Let The Right One In (2009 Swedish version), What We Do in the Shadows (both tv show and film), Interview with the Vampire (both adaptations), Fright Night (both versions but prefer the 1985 version), Lost Boys, The Hunger, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Penny Dreadful, Only Lovers Left Alive, BTVS, Angel, From Dusk Till Dawn (I prefer the show personally), Blade, The Underworld series but especially the first film and Rise of the Lycans, Byzantium, The Moth Diaries, The Invitation, The Carmilla web series on youtube.
Best vampire TV show is The Originals but The Vampire Diaries’ first three seasons come very close. True Blood is fun but very camp and not to be taken too seriously.
If you enjoy anime, watch Blood+ (literally made me cry), Castlevania, Seraph of the End, Hellsing Ultimate.
One came out recently so if you don’t mind spoilers since saying there’s vampires is a potential spoiler, there’s also...
Abigail (2024)
Literally watched it twice. Amazing.

throwing you a bone (heh) cause I wanna know your thoughts. Ramble about vampires. What do you like about them? Have a favorite vampire?
i had so much to say so if u care to read it it's under the cut :-)
ok so i have a lot of opinions on vampires but im not going to share all of them now (partly bc im planning to put those ideas into a paper at some point and i don't want to spoil the writing process for myself lmao) so my favorite vampires by far are louis, claudia, and lestat from the interview with the vampire tv show. there are characters who are vampires that i love more than those three (nandor from what we do in the shadows comes to mind) but in my opinion, that show is the best modern version of vampires. because vampires are monsters, and monsters symbolize something that a culture is scared of, and a lot of modern vampire stories forget that. i understand that not everyone want to see vampires as monsters, but i am very firm in my belief that vampires always should be monsters. that being said, i think there's a lot to analyze in iwtv (2022) of what people both from the past timeline and the present timeline are scared of, especially as it correlates to race, queerness, and femininity. i cannot go into more detail right now because i have not studied any of the iwtvs in an academic context, so i do not feel comfortable putting an unbacked opinion on something that i want to feel strongly about.
i do think that most modern vampire stories are largely disappointing. twilight and its copycats are disgraces to the vampire name, and even wwdits, which i love so dearly, is yet to show a real understanding of why culturally vampires exist.
as far as sexual reasons, because i do have a vampire kink, it has a lot to do with desire and submission. i feel a lot of insecurity about being desired, and i often don't believe when someone claims that they want me, so to have tangible proof, such as bite marks in my skin and my blood being sucked up, that that person desires me, then i am much more likely to believe it. as far as submission, i feel very comforted when i am able to submit to someone, and if someone is able to force or compel me to submit, then i am able to find that comfort more quickly. i think there might be a few other reasons why i find vampires so erotic, but i haven't psychoanalyzed them yet so there's nothing interesting to talk about in them.
#ask#vampires#vampire nsft#i could also go into my opinions of the process of being turned into a vampire or older vampire media#but i don't think my opinions are fully formed on those yet#i love vampires#like thinking about them kinda makes me wanna cry they're so special to me

5. What We Do in the Shadows (2014)
Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s What We Do in the Shadows (2014), for me, is always the first piece of vampire media that comes to mind. I’m not entirely sure why, but my brother and I watched this almost every night for years. If I had to guess, I’d say its because of the satirical and comedic approach it takes as a “mockumentary” that contrasts so significantly from other traditional and more modern portrayals of vampirism. This movie humanizes vampires in a way thats less emotional than others like Twilight or Interview With the Vampire that focus on the heavy emotional toll it would take, instead making the characters socially awkward, really mundane, and even a little bit stupid.
Unlike traditional stories like Bram Stoker’s Dracula, What We Do in the Shadows highlights how funny it would be for vampires to try and integrate into modern society. The film’s main vampire characters, Viago, Vladislav, Deacon, and Petyr, all share an apartment in Wellington, New Zealand, where they argue about household chores and struggle with modern life and occasionally pick fun at the traditional vampire myth, saying things like “When you are a vampire, you become very sexy”. (1). Keeping this separation, the vampires in this movie are deeply flawed and often pathetic, by struggling to keep up with ever-changing social etiquette and slang, as well as keeping up with fashion trends. All of this directly challenges the romanticized and fearsome images of vampires seen in other pieces of media. This is also a twist on the idea of “Otherness” so present in vampire myths; showing an Other that is more familiar to real life. People who are cast out within human society are people who are different from the in-group in some way, as described in Cohen’s Monster Culture (Seven Theses) as often originating from culture, sexuality, race, or political or economic in nature. (2). Sometimes, though, that just means being a little awkward or “weird”. So instead of these vampires being Othered because of fear of any kind, they’re Othered the way real humans would be.
Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, What We Do in the Shadows (Los Angeles: Unison Films, 2014).
Cohen, Monster Culture (Seven Theses). p. 46-47.

Get to know me 💗💗💗
My name is Coco, my pronouns are she/they, I’m black biracial and this influences all my art, along with me being autistic and Lesbian.
I love Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, especially part 5 Vento Aureo. I draw Bruabba the most it is literally all I care and think about most the time lol.
I’m also into MLP and I am in fact a furry I have my fursona(s) and ponysonas that I’d love to share.
Some other things I’m interested in are superheroes and vampires. I’ve liked them my whole life, especially superheroes. So modern content of that I like is Invincible, The Boys, Interview with the Vampire AMC, and what we do in the shadows. I also have my superhero OCs that always float around in my mind but I never bring myself to draw lol.
When it comes to my taste in music and fashion I love metal (mostly all kinds), and whatever flavor of music I manage to mash together and label my own genre. For example, FKA Twigs, Björk, Sophie, and Imogen Heap are all together in my newest mess of a playlist that I define as angelic demigirl music lmao.
I’m obsessed with fashion I love unique and distinct styles. Currently have been in love with Gyaru (Himekaji and Roma specifically) and Shoujo Girl aesthetic, along with coquette and Dolly styles.
If you read this thanks so much, I’m mainly just here because I have a hard time expressing myself and this feels likes such a fresh start where I can be just free and fluid. 💗

Nothing against Vampire Romance, but I really want to see more Vampire Found Family.
Vampires who were torn from their old lives when they were bitten. Who watched their families grieve from the shadows, and then watched them wither and die and grieved for them themselves.
Vampires who have loved and lost so completely and yet still, despite it all, decide to try again. Who find other people in the same situation and choose to call each other sibling/parent/child/etc. despite knowing how terribly it could all go wrong.
Vampires who start off presenting themselves as a family purely for convenience, because you need some explanation to give to the humans as to how this bunch of people are all linked to you and why you all look and act so similar.
("Red eyes run in the family. It's a genetic thing— it's a bit rude to point it out, actually." "Doesn't everybody's family sleep in coffins? Maybe you're the weird ones!")
Vampires who wake up one night and realise that it's not a lie anymore. That somewhere along the line they just started to forget that their 'sister', or their 'cousin' or weird Uncle Vlad wasn't actually a blood relation (at least not in that sense) and now they just think of them as family.
Vampires who don't bother to apply specific labels to their relationships, but enjoy watching the humans struggle to guess exactly how all these people are all connected to each other (blood relatives? Polycule? Foster family? Roommates?).
Vampires who keep up with the local gossip and deliberately toss out contradictory hints and give oblique answers to any questions just to fuel the fire.
Vampires who are the only immortal member of their found family, who fit in so effortlessly and yet sometimes leave their friends wondering exactly how many iterations of this they've already been through. How many times have they found a new group of people to call home? How many times have they sat in a bar watching everyone drink and making those exact same terrible jokes?
(How many times have they watched it all fall apart, watched their loved ones wither and die, and then grieved, mourned, got back up started the cycle all over again?)
Vampires who brush aside these kind of questions when asked, but who keep a collection of old photos, sketches, letters and trinkets in a box in their room that they won't let anybody else touch.
Alternatively, vampires who are so old and so lost to immortality that they end up attaching themselves to family groups more than individuals.
Vampires who will pop in for a few months to help with the new baby, vanish for nearly two decades and then come back to attend her graduation without really noticing the gap.
Vampires who have a habit of addressing everybody by their ancestor's names indiscriminately, and are often genuinely caught off guard to realise that the person in front of them is the great-great grandchild of the person they thought they were talking to. Whose family members are used to being asked "do you remember?" about events that happened decades before they were born, or having to finish conversations that were started with their grandparents.
Vampires who have complicated extended families based on who they were bitten by, who else was bitten by that person, who they then went on to bite, etc… that if traced back far enough can basically encompass every other vampire in existence.
Vampires who would have to consult several complicated family trees to explain to their human friends exactly how they're related to this person, "but basically he's my cousin Bill and he's sleeping on my sofa for a few days while he's in town."
Vampires whose relationships change over the course of their long lifespans. Who form family groups with other vampires that last maybe the length of a human lifespan, and then drift apart as everyone moves on to other groups with other people. Who can be as close as siblings one century and then merely close acquaintances the next.
Vampires consider this a natural part of immortality, and have words to describe ex-family members and the relationships between them.
Just… more Vampire Found Family, y'know?

its crazy how interview with the vampire and maybe what we do in the shadows are the two main and only pieces of media people commonly think of when it comes to gay vampires because in my mind every single vampire is gay whether their creator knows it or not
