Discover Google Pixel 9, 8a, Watch 3’s Wonders in 2024!

Google Pixel 2024 Google Pixel 9, 8a, Watch 3, and more What to expect from Google Pixel devices in 12 months

2023 was a big year for Pixel. New products like the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet were released alongside the annual upgrades to existing products. Moreover, the Google Pixel 8 and Pixel Watch 2 gained battery life improvements.

However 2023 has become over, so let’s go see what 2024 could offer. You have some understanding as to what Google has in hand for us over the next year, even though the are scarce and some products may not appear.

The Google Pixel 9 and Pixel Fold 2 are among the 2024 Google Pixel launch possibilities.

Google must release the mid-range Pixel 8a, the last Pixel 8, before anything else. While flagship Pixels are inconsistent, A-series phones are often year-end highlights.

Given Samsung’s success with the Galaxy A54, mid-range competition is fierce. With the iPhone SE 4 not expected until 2025, Google can dig in and cement its position as a cheaper phone leader.

The phone’s design may not change much from last year, The Pixel 8’s Tensor G3 chipset and AI features should be on the phone. Similar to the Pixel 8, the Pixel 8a won’t win benchmarking contests.What you will expect the 8a to receive updates first like any Pixel and have 7-year support like its older siblings.

Top flagship features like great photography and battery life are also available in the Pixel A series. With bigger bezels, plastic frames, and no optical zoom, don’t expect premium features like the flagship. It’s not a dealbreaker if Google keeps the price under $500.

Pixel 9 and 9 Pro

Google will likely release two flagship Pixels in October. However, one leak suggests thay may get three Google Pixel 9 devices, the standard and two Pro models.

Apparently, these two variants will have the same performance and camera improvements but different sizes. One with a 6.7-inch screen and one with 6.3.say will get the usual pair of phones, but both could have larger screens. It was unclear how big they could get.

Regardless, the Google Pixel 9 series will have a Tensor G4 chipset. They don’t expect this chip to be powerful, but Google could improve efficiency. Instead, this will power the Pixel 9’s AI features, which will likely emphasize photo quality and editing.

Google to rely heavily on its AI models. Gemini Pro and Ultra will be added to Google Bard, accessible through Google Assistant, later this year. These features have only improved Pixel AI features, but expect new and more powerful ones.

Beyond AI, the Google Pixel 9 camera and display should improve, and they hope Google can avoid the battery life issues of the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series.

Android 15: 2024 Pixel updates

Google Pixel 9 wouldn’t exist without Android, and Android 15 should be released soon. The first Android 15 developer preview may launch soon (Android 14 debuted in February).

Public viewing of the software is likely at Google I/O in May. The first public beta may arrive that day, but Android 14 arrived in April.

The stable release is expected in Fall. Android 14 was released in early October, a week before the Pixel 8 launch event, instead of in late summer.

Either situation could happen this year, and if it does, it could mean Google is taking an Apple-like approach to Android releases. The latest iOS version usually releases shortly before the next iPhone.

Regardless of beta status, Pixel owners will get all Android updates first. The Google Pixel 9 and 9 Pro will ship with the new software and some exclusive features. Due to Google’s monthly feature drops, expect the Pixel to get most Android updates.

They don’t know much about Android 15, but it’s likely to include new protections against phishing scams and other “deceptive behavior” from apps. Another option is a battery health indicator like those on iPhones to track how much capacity your phone’s battery has lost over time.

The software will likely have many more features, but will have to wait.

Google Pixel Watch 3

You haven’t seen much about the Pixel Watch as of yet , but whenever the last two years of silence are any indication, it will be released in October with the Google Pixel 9. In May, see I/O again, but not always. Who knows what the watch could improve.

The Pixel Watch 3 may have no buttons, A Google patent suggests that gestures, but not wand-waving, could control the watch. Instead, it swipes, presses, and squeezes the watch case. Could the Pixel Watch 3 benefit from a rotating bezel without moving parts that could break?

If the Pixel Watch 2 is any indication, health and safety features will improve, blurring the lines between the Pixel Watch and a Fitbit. you hope Google fixes basic design features like slimming the chunky bezels and offering a smaller watch face for people with smaller hands.

Will Pixel Fold 2 or Tablet 2 appear?

You biggest Pixel range question for 2024 is whether the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet will be updated. you haven’t heard anything about follow-ups, other than Google doesn’t want them to be “one and done” products.

Remember that the Pixel Tablet was announced at Google I/O 2022 but didn’t hit shelves for 13 months. It took until last summer for the Pixel Fold to be confirmed after years of rumors. Which bodes ill for a 2024 second-generation device.

You could have said the same about the Pixel Watch 2 last year. Google’s second-generation smartwatch debuted alongside the Pixel 8 series, ending speculation that it would skip the annual upgrade cycle.

What took iPhone emoji search so long?

Every year, the chant gets louder:

oh that’s cool Apple that you added all this stuff but WHERE IS MY EMOJI SEARCH

This year, people are going to have to come up with a new request, because emoji search is coming to iOS 14.

So what the heck took Apple so long?

Emoji search seems so obvious, did Apple just forget to implement it? Did they not know people wanted this?

Here I piece together the most likely reasons this took so long. It’s probably not just one, but a bit of each of them.

(Oh, and if you’re new to my rarely-update-blog here, you can usually find me over at Emojipedia.)

1. 🗓 Timing 

The emoji keyboard first came to the iPhone twelve years ago in iPhone OS 2.2.

It took until 2011 for widespread access to this keyboard in iOS, and wasn’t until 2016 that it became clear that frequent emoji updates may be a real thing.

In the early years, there wasn’t much change in the emoji set. iOS 8.3 in 2015 nearly doubled the set, and by the following year it was clear that updates were coming consistently year-on-year.

This isn’t much of an excuse so much as to reframe our minds. It feels like emojis have been huge and growing in number forever but we’re talking more likely 4-5 years here.

2. 🙅 Apple just isn’t good at search

Search isn’t Apple’s forte. Siri and App Store search come to mind as examples that you just don’t have faith when you say or type a phrase, that you’ll get a great result.

You might, but you wouldn’t want to bet your life on it.

It seems reasonable that Apple knows its strengths, and has avoided doing emoji search until it could do a decent job. 

Apple has emoji search on the Mac. It’s existed for years. And it has gotten worse over time.

Something happened in 2016 which caused the previously inflexible-yet-consistent emoji search to broaden and accept more terms, but with far less pleasing results.

The good news? Emoji search in macOS Big Sur has improved. It’s also decent in iOS 14 beta.

It felt like in 2016-2019, Apple’s macOS emoji search was either too complex and buggy to fix, and now replaced. Or it has finally been improved.

Whether these tweaks are implemented by hand (by checking the most common search phrases and fixing accordingly), or by natural language processing improvements, I’m not sure.

3. 🔡 Emoji Auto-Suggest

Apple has had emoji auto-suggest for a number of years on iOS. 

You start typing a word, and an emoji might be suggested in the list of options. This works relatively well for a small set of results. 

Issues with auto-suggest-as-emoji-search:

If you’re already on the emoji keyboard and can’t find an emoji, you need to get back out of the emoji keyboard to try auto-suggest

Only three results are shown at a time. If you have a big group of results like all green emojis, three isn’t enough

If you don’t like the auto-suggest options you have to delete the word you just typed. Or you end up with a random word in your text.

Was emoji auto-suggest intended as the solution, so emoji search wasn’t needed at all? Did this delay the search feature? Maybe, but not necessarily.

Perhaps it was just a good place to get some data on what people are emoji searching for.

4. 😳 Public shaming

The first version of emoji auto-suggest on iOS only suggested one emoji. Damon Beres at Mashable noted the issue this presented, when searching for some terms.

Why should CEO show a man and not a woman?

Having only one auto-suggest option was always short-sighted, as it’s lose-lose no matter which gender is shown.

Apple rectified this in a subsequent release, by showing up to three choices.

Given the public and media interest in emoji, I doubt Apple wanted to roll out emoji search on iOS that was either buggy (ala Mac emoji search until now) or suggested bias (like the CEO auto-suggest option used to).

It’s one thing having bad search results on a relatively hidden feature on the Mac. It’s another to have them on a marquee feature of iOS.

Thankfully the emoji search results on iOS 14 beta are decent. Though they don’t make a particular point of which gender is shown first - it varies considerably, with no specific logic that is clear.

One failing here: you cannot press-and-hold any search result emoji to choose a different skin tone. The same limitation applies to the emoji auto-suggest feature.

5. UI Weirdness

One minor issue that may have deterred Apple from implementing emoji search earlier: it’s sometimes weird having a keyboard shown on screen that doesn’t actually type into your app.

If you accidentally find your way into the emoji search field, there is a new button in the lower-right hand corner to escape back to regular text entry. Or just tap where you want to type.

This same issue exists with third-party keyboards and iMessage apps like any GIF search. It seemed weirder at first, but now I think most users are familiar with a search-within-keyboard option.

As far as I can tell, there is no option to turn the emoji bar off.

Final notes

This is beta software, so I’m not going to review the specific functionality, but my initial notes are:

✅ Emoji search on iOS seems good, shows what an average user would expect.

💻 Compared to Catalina, the Big Sur results are much better. Every issue I raise in this earlier article has been addressed. A general test of other terms seems to show results that are universally better.

🤷 Sometimes the same search shows different results, I don’t know why

🔄 The search results are different to emoji auto-suggest. Typing ‘woman’ suggests 👩 in the auto-suggest bar, but gives a whole bunch of types of women in the search results, well ahead of the base ‘woman’ emoji.

🇬🇧 I performed my tests in English. I’m not sure how the iPhone emoji search performs in other languages.

Is this a record? No sooner has the iPhone 13 hit store shelves than the rumor mill is already up and churning about the next one. Rumors from the weekend suggest the iPhone 14 will be a “complete redesign,” but the details are thin gruel at this point. Hold not these rumors close to your chest in hope, my friends, lest they disappear into a puff of whimsy.

This complete redesign will reportedly see the 14 look a lot more like the iPhone 4, with a band running around the outside of the device. That makes sense given how beloved the 4’s design was, and how those square edges have recently returned to Apple’s design language. Restart your MAC and continue to press option key to continue with the installation.

Now, boot from “Install macOS Big Sur.” If there is no USB device found, try to unplug and replug your USB device.

You can also use the Disk Utility if you are planning to format your drive and create a new partition and continue with the installation.

The installation may take several hours. In our case, it sometimes looked as if the installer had flown out during the upgrade. In this case, you should wait, as the installation is usually still ongoing. Over time, better ways to upgrade the machine can be found. Currently, the safest approach is to upgrade with a USB boot.

After the installation is complete, you will see that your Wi-fi is not working. So go to applications and search for Patcher file.

Right click and click to force open the file. And click on Patch Kexts. Click Continue.

Make sure the USB is still plugged-in. Click Force Skip check and enter the same password that you entered in step 4.
