ironheart is absolutely honoring tony’s legacy, just because they’re not spelling it out doesn’t mean it’s not there!

Riri is resourceful and can think on her feet. I absolutely saw parallels in her making her own rules in the elevator trap with tony making his own weapons in iron man 3 and infiltrating the “mandarin’s” mansion. They use their wits to think outside the box.

The pop culture references. The pride in their inventions. Deep and complex relationships with their AI’s. A refusal to process their grief until they are forced to.

The grappling with wanting to be great and inventing things because they can versus using their inventions to help people. (And Riri is currently in the middle of her origin story so she’s obviously not going to be at the point where she is fully committed to being a superhero. That’s what an origin story is for!)

Just because there are a few lines that acknowledge that Tony Stark had privilege does not mean they are trashing his legacy or whatever. Tony was a billionaire, born to a wealthy inventor and businessman. Tony never had to worry about funding for his projects. That doesn’t discount all the good he did. It’s just acknowledging the differences between him and Riri.

You’re allowed to dislike the writing, or to not find the plot engaging, or to dislike the way the show does exposition. But it’s very important to think about why you may not like the show! And if the big reason is that it “doesn’t honor Tony’s legacy,” maybe take a moment to remind yourself that a) not everything in a story is going to be explicitly spelled out, b) a few lines acknowledging a character’s privilege doesn’t mean they’re discounting the character’s accomplishments, and c) tony stark is a fictional character. The racism and misogyny people are spewing about this show is real. Tony Stark is not.

Too young, too bitter (chapter I)

“You want me to follow him?” you ask, deadpan, staring at the glowing mission tablet in your hands. “You’re joking.”

“Nope,” Natasha replies without looking up from her gear bag. “You’re on recon with Barnes. Sam and I take the northern perimeter. Steve’s running point with Wanda.”

You glance across the hangar. Bucky stands at the Quinjet, arms crossed, looking like someone just asked him to eat a salad for breakfast.

“Can’t I just—switch with Sam or something?” you plead. “I’d rather spend two hours listening to Tony explain quantum physics in Klingon than spend one more minute with his cranky ass.”

From across the hangar, Bucky raises an eyebrow. “You know I can hear you, right?”

You don’t even flinch. “Good.”

He scoffs and turns back to the Quinjet. You groan.

Later, high above the city skyline, the two of you move through the crumbling remains of an abandoned HYDRA base. You’re nimble, fast, clearing rooms ahead of him like a blur.

“You going to keep rushing ahead like a toddler on Red Bull?” Bucky mutters through comms.

“You going to keep walking like your hips are made of rust and regret?” you shoot back.

“Maybe if someone followed the damn plan—”

“Maybe if someone updated their attitude post-WWII—”

“Guys,” Natasha cuts in over comms. “Shut up.”

You both go silent.

But it doesn’t last.

In one of the darker corridors, a security turret snaps to life.

You dodge. Bucky shoots. It barely misses your shoulder.

“Are you trying to kill me?” you snap, panting behind cover.

“You jumped in front of my shot!”

“I moved like a normal person. You aimed like my grandma.”

His voice comes through low and annoyed: “If you’d stop acting like a reckless kid—”

“And if you’d stop acting like every decision is life or death, maybe we wouldn’t be stuck in this eternal pissing contest!”

There’s a pause.

“Is that what this is? A contest?” he says, dryly.

“No,” you reply, stepping out from cover, voice icy. “Because I’m already winning.”

cold war (a.k.a the pettiest show on Earth)

Back at the tower, your feud reaches a level of childish few Avengers have witnessed before.

The thermostat war begins Monday.

You like the lounge at a cool 21°C. Bucky, the 106-year-old relic of a man, insists on setting it to an unholy 25. You start changing it every time he leaves the room. He starts locking the settings.

You hack it.

He disconnects it from the Wi-Fi.

You tape a printed photo of yourself next to the controls flipping the bird with a sticky note: "This war is mine."

Tuesday, you label everything in the fridge.

Not just your food. Everything.

"YOGURT — NOT BUCKY'S"

"JUICE — MINE. NOT GRUMPY GHOST VETERAN'S."

"LEFTOVER PASTA — TOUCHED BY ME. HOPE YOU LIKE GERMS."

The next day, your stash is replaced with MREs and a Post-it that just says “Try being less annoying.”

You leave his arm polish in the freezer.

He doesn’t speak to you for two days.

things (almost) gets physical

You’re sparring in the gym. Steve pairs you up intentionally, everyone in the tower Stark can’t take anymore you two fighting and failing on missions all the time.

You glare at Bucky from across the mat. He rolls his eyes.

"You know, we could skip this,” he mutters, rolling his shoulder.

“What, afraid I’ll kick your ass?” you ask sweetly.

“I’m afraid I’ll say something you’ll cry about for three hours.”

You lunge. He blocks. You spin and catch him with a leg sweep, sending him stumbling.

He recovers fast, grabs your arm, and flips you—hard. You hit the mat with a dull thud.

“Oops,” he says, smirking.

“You’re such a child,” you hiss, wiping blood from your lip.

“Says the one who labeled her yogurt.”

You go at him again, and this time, your fight looks more like a bar brawl than training. Steve has to physically step between you, catching your wrist mid-swing.

“Okay!” he says, laughing nervously. “Let’s dial it back.”

Bucky huffs and storms off.

You’re left breathless, heart pounding—not just from the fight.

There was a moment in there.

A second where he was above you on the mat, hands gripping your wrists, your faces inches apart, and your pulse jumped for a completely different reason.

You haven’t stopped thinking about it since.

It’s a week later when you find Bucky alone on the balcony during one of Tony’s ridiculous rooftop parties. Everyone else is drinking and dancing under string lights. He’s nursing a beer, watching the city.

You don’t say anything at first. Just lean next to him, close enough to feel his presence but not close enough to be soft.

He glances at you.

You both sigh at the same time.

“I still think you’re too bitter for your own good,” you say eventually.

He chuckles. “And you’re still an immature pain in my ass.”

You clink your glass against his bottle.

“Glad we understand each other.”

He glances sideways at you, and for the first time, there’s no venom in it.

Just something... complicated.

“You’re not that bad,” he says.

You smirk. “Careful. That almost sounded like a compliment.”

“Don’t let it go to your head.”

You stand in silence again, this time comfortably. Maybe this cold war isn’t over. But you’ve both stopped firing missiles.

For now.

Would you like a follow-up chapter where all this tension explodes into something more intimate (or romantic), or maybe a scene where they have to pretend to get along during a mission undercover as a couple?

Three generations of Starks

(I've got some story notes for Iron Man 2 below as well as an alt without the ghost dads)

Meeting The Legend:

Morgan would arrive at the beginning of Iron Man 2. Its practical, as she knows for a fact that her dad was there on the Stark Expo's opening night (and also 'cause she wants to see the first 21st century Expo). All her life, she was told how great a man- the futurist who saved the world- was and, as she grew older, wanted to form her own opinions of her father. Seeing him on stage surrounded by dancers, she finds it… egotistical.

Given that she has nowhere else to go and meeting her dad was the plan, she takes the bus to her dad's mansion in Malibu

(AN: In this au, the Stark Expo is on the old Stark Pictures lot, so New York doesn't get destroyed every other movie)

and sneaks in with the help of EDITH. The ai begins to expand JARVIS's capacity for independent thought & growth and convinces him to let her stay, telling him her story. Morgan camps out for almost two weeks while Tony is in Monaco, meeting the other bots and starting to get herself situated in this new time.

She doesn't reveal herself to Tony until just after the party. She's kind of horrified at seeing her moral paragon of a dad drunk off his ass and making a fool of himself. When she does reveal herself, he thinks she's a hallucination but doesn't really care, spilling that he's dying. Morgan, while intelligent and a time traveler, is still 15 and terrified that in coming back she cost her dad his life. Morgan stays up all night in a panic while Tony sleeps off being blackout drunk. They actually have to repeat their introductions as Tony doesn't remember the night before. He (to much pain in his throbbing skull) believes her story. They talk and it's a much better experience for Morgan… until Fury shows up.

First Contact With SHIELD:

Director Fury, 'Natalia', and Coulson come to give him a reality check and a pep talk. Morgan recognizes both Fury and Natasha but doesn't know any of them personally as they're all long dead in her time. She actually shuts herself in a closet but unfortunately for herself, she tried to play hide and seek against three superspies. Morgan is terrified of them, knowing that SHIELD was Hydra and they're SHIELD so, when Natasha opens the closet door, she kicks blindly. When Natasha pulls a gun reflexively, Morgan dons the Legacy suit. The nanotech gets Tony excited (even with the hangover) and Natasha finally takes in how Morgan's hand is shaking, repulser prepped but not charged. The spy backs off.

They head back to a communal space to talk but Morgan demands to know if they're Hydra. When they obviously say no, she asks them to prove it, which they also can't do because you can't prove a negative. She then asks for access to SHIELD's files so EDITH can hunt for clarification, which Fury also (justifiably) refuses to give her. Tony thinks she's confused and tries to explain the history, but Morgan just shakes her head and tries to explain to him that SHIELD was one and the same with Hydra.

Coulson, catching the 'was', takes in her suit and clothes and puts the pieces together. With his theory, he then registers what the kid actually said and steps forward. He puts his gun on the table and slowly sits on his knees in front of the couch she's sitting on. "What do you mean SHIELD and Hydra are one in the same?"

"… How do I know I can trust you?"

He takes out his lucky Captain America trading cards. The agent shares his passion for the legend that is Captain America and how the figure always inspired him to get back up and do the right thing, no matter the cost. How he's even kept a close eye on other super soldier attempts since. Eventually, he gets through to her and says that she'll tell him and only him. He agrees and they go into another room while Fury and Natashalie do the canon bagel scene with Tony.

After JARVIS and EDITH throw up some soundproofing and making sure there's no bugs, she tells Coulson what he needs to know. She's Tony's daughter from the future, SHIELD is infested by Hydra, and -in a couple years- SHIELD will fall because of it. Coulson believes her. She also reveals that they find Steve Rodgers in the next few years, which he is much more excited about.

Three Generations of Starks:

With the promise to not tell anyone else, even Natasha and Fury, they part. After Howard's stuff is dropped off, Coulson leaves them alone to deal with a different movie and leaves them to their making history. Rejuvenated by the temporary 'cure', Tony takes some time to be excited about the Legacy suit and her technology as a whole. He flits around workstations, chattering to JARVIS, and taking notes about all she knows about the armor (which isn't much for the record, it was never her expertise). Morgan's never seen this version of her father before. It's not the perfect phoenix-metaphor-turned-martyr or the reckless, egotistical dick- this is real.

The teen finds herself enjoying this as she pulls out Howard's models, interested in what her grandpa's 'city of tomorrow' looked like (that's more her expertise). Morgan had never heard stories of her grandparents. She knew they died when Tony was young, but she didn't know anything about them.

Seeing the film reel, she's initially confused on what to do with this and asks Tony, who makes a snarky comment on kids these days and sets it up with the projector. As he's setting it up, Morgan admits she's never heard stories of them. Tony repeats what he told Fury about how his dad didn't even like him and was happy to be rid of him, which causing Morgan to become pensive for a bit, a bit put off. They watch and Morgan tears up at the end, remembering her dad's last message to her.

She shares this connection with Tony, telling him the reason she initially came back and how she's gotten to form her own view of Tony Stark the man. How he is very flawed and makes mistakes but cares. How she sees this brief glimpse of Howard in him and how she viewed Tony growing up.

(AN: She's mirroring Tony and Howards relationship with herself and Tony but in reverse. She only ever heard about the futurist and is coming to find that he's a complex person. She's also complementing Tony's arc with his relationship to his father and the story's theme of legacy in the process its very fun)

And together, they make Starkium

How many more things/ people that mean something to Tony do they have left to destroy, honestly? Pepper is out, Gwyneth is probably not coming back to the MCU, so Morgan is also probably out. J.A.R.V.I.S was killed, and Vision too, even though he didn't have the same connection with Tony. Peter has now been forgotten by everyone who loved him. May is dead, so Happy has no reason to be back either. Most of the fandom doesn't know who Harley is, let's be honest. Rhodey was not Rhodey for a long time, and who knows when/if they're going to explain exactly when he was taken.

Stark Industries is up in the air. And now Avengers(Stark) Tower??? I know Ironheart is coming out, but she had no contact with Tony, her having a suit is kind of a call-back, but they made it pretty clear she did it herself. And the last nail in the coffin is going to be RDJ coming back as Doom. Not sure how yet, but they will find a way to shit on Tony Stark one last time.

And the rest of the OG Avengers too. Steve's ending was ... polarizing. Nat is dead. Clint is over, Renner is not coming back since Disney refuses to pay him. Bruce is so up in the air, I have no idea what they're doing with him, so at least I'm in the same boat as Disney execs. And Thor has been "re-invented" so many times he lost any semblance of self.

Someone tell Disney they don't have to shit all over the original characters to make space for new one.

The Teasing Begins (and Never Ends)

Back at the Tower, the second you walked through the doors, you swore every Avenger in sight turned into a middle-school gossip.

Natasha, ever the subtle one, raised a single eyebrow as she passed you in the hallway, her smirk saying more than her words ever could. Sam didn’t even try to hide his amusement, giving you a slow, exaggerated clap as you walked by. And Tony—well, Tony handed Bucky a "Welcome to the Chaos" gift basket, complete with wine, a fire extinguisher, and a guide titled “Dating for Brooding Idiots.”

Even Vision, ever the logician, tilted his head, his tone matter-of-fact. “Statistically speaking, this development was overdue.”

You groaned, pressing a hand to your forehead in a silent plea for mercy.

Bucky muttered under his breath, “Should’ve stayed in Monaco.”

But the teasing wasn’t the worst part.

The worst part was how everything had changed.

Now, when he stood beside you in the kitchen, brushing your hand as he passed, it made your heart do that annoying flutter thing you’d sworn you’d never have. When he sat next to you on the couch, thigh pressed to yours, the space between you was no longer filled with awkward tension. It was... grounding. Comfortable. New. Scary.

You both kind of sucked at being "a couple." Neither of you were great with feelings, open affection, or labels. But you were trying. Together. And, surprisingly, it was working. It helped that your fighting had decreased by, like, 12%. Which, for the two of you, was practically a hallmark of marital bliss.

“Okay, don’t make this weird,” you said as you stepped into the elevator, trying to steel yourself. “It’s just dinner.”

“You say that like you’re not wearing lipstick for the first time in six months,” Bucky shot back, his eyes scanning you like he was trying to figure out whether you were nervous or just ridiculous.

You flipped him off with a grin, rolling your eyes. “Shut up and push the rooftop button.”

It wasn’t a real restaurant, technically. But Tony had given you private access to the rooftop terrace, stringing up lights and setting a table like it was something out of a cheesy rom-com.

You almost turned around the second you saw it.

Bucky stared, his voice thick with surprise. “Wow.”

“What?” you asked, voice light but heart skipping a beat.

“You’re actually blushing.”

“No, I’m not.”

“Yes, you are.”

A beat passed. Then, with a sly smile, you countered, “Are you nervous?”

He didn’t answer. Instead, he walked up behind your chair, pulling it out for you like some old-school gentleman, his hands a little unsteady as he poured the wine.

The conversation started off awkward—stilted, like you’d both forgotten how to speak when you weren’t arguing or bickering. But then something shifted.

You found yourself telling him about the time you tried to cook for the team and nearly blew up the kitchen. He laughed, shaking his head at your disaster. Then, in a voice tinged with embarrassment, he told you about Sam forcing him into a yoga class and pulling his hamstring trying to do downward dog.

You laughed. He smiled.

And just like that, the tension melted away, leaving something much softer, much more... real.

By the time dessert arrived—Tony having sent up cheesecake via the dumbwaiter, like some sassy butler—you were both relaxed, a little more at ease.

Then, without a word, Bucky reached across the table, his fingers brushing against yours.

“I’m not good at this,” he admitted, voice low, rough like he was still figuring out how to speak the truth.

“Neither am I,” you said, squeezing his hand. “But I like trying with you.”

His thumb brushed over your knuckles, the simple gesture sending a warmth spreading through you. “You still think I’m too old and bitter?”

You smirked, the playful spark returning to your eyes. “Absolutely. But I’ve decided I like that about you.”

His smile softened, genuine and a little shy, and for a moment, you could see the vulnerability in him that he didn’t let anyone else see.

Then, without any warning, he stood up, moved around the table, and leaned down, his face only inches from yours.

And he kissed you.

Not because anyone was watching.

Not because it was part of some mission.

But because he wanted to.

And because, for once, you wanted to, too.

The Cute Ending They (Secretly) Deserve

Weeks later, you found yourselves curled up on the Tower couch under a blanket. A movie played in the background. No one was watching it.

Bucky had his arm around you. Your head rested against his chest. For once, there was no chaos. No arguing. Just peace.

Natasha walked by, paused, and smirked.

“Domestic Barnes is a weird look,” she said.

Bucky didn’t even open his eyes. “Go away.”

You whispered, “You know we’re going to be the Tower’s favorite gossip topic for months.”

He sighed. “Yeah.”

“Still worth it?”

He turned his head and kissed your temple. “Completely.”

You smiled, eyes closing.

In all your chaos, your bickering, your fire and sparks and fake kisses turned real—you found something solid.

Not perfect.

Not easy.

But real.

And for once, that was more than enough.

Been a bit quiet (aside from story posts that I occasionally draft) but I've been archiving a lot of old stuff including my OG Fletcher legacy to have easy access to it in the docs (and maybe get some inspiration/thoughts for the characters who are still relevant in my verse by seeing how their original development went) and damn one of my main takeaways was that I absolutely slept on Kyle and Lyra as a couple. Now that I have a special soft spot for couples that are best friends first I see their beauty and I love them both separately and together😭
