I wanted to read some original shorts from current Filipino writers.

Douglas was a few years ahead of me in college; the first story in this collection came out in our literary folio back then. Get him if you like creepy quasi-histories that crib from myths and fairy tales.

I first heard Isabel Yap's "Milagroso" on Levar Burton Reads and wanted more of that kind of sci-fi, or just more of her work. Didn't even notice the Tamsyn Muir blurb till I was unwrapping the package, but ooh.

Something about Jacobi’s clone in “time to kill” really messes me up. Because, like, after you listen to the episode where you find out that Lovelace isn’t the original Lovelace, we also find out that the clones don’t actually know that they aren’t the original person. The Jacobi clone was completely convinced that he was the original, so when the others left him outside, his last thought was probably that his friends had just made the worst possible mistake they could have made in that situation, that they had left him, the real Jacobi, to die and now they’re all in danger because there is something else that isn’t him on the ship with them. He died thinking that theres this thing that’s taking his place. This is the worse case scenario and there was nothing he could do about it. On the other hand, the real Jacobi, (assuming that the real Jacobi was the one inside the ship the whole time), had to listen to himself die. And i bet that after he finds out about how Lovelace is an alien, he thinks to himself, what if he isn’t the real Jacobi, that the real Jacobi died when they left him outside, and that he is the alien and just doesn’t know it. Because how could he know that? Lovelace didn’t, and he would never have any solid proof that he doesn’t know either. I bet it drives him a bit crazy, if he constantly has that thought going through his head.

I dont know. I think about this quite often.

Daryl is weak.

Okay, bold headline. I’m a journalist I know how clickbait works. Jokes aside, hear me out.

A lot of fans say that Daryl acts totally out of character in the second season of his spin-off. Getting close to a woman that quickly. Kissing her. Not thinking about going home anymore or not fighting tooth and nail to get there anymore.

And while I very much agree and the Daryl from the Spin-Off doesn’t feel like the Daryl from the flagship show anymore, there’s a pattern I’ve noticed throughout the series.

The word Daryl gets described the most is probably “loyal”. But what if he’s not that “loyal” man, everyone makes him out to be?

Daryl’s not good alone. He needs people. He latches on to them. First it was Merle, his bad influence of a brother. Then it was Rick and the group. He needs a role model. Someone to follow.

what happens though if you take away his role model, is always the same thing. He falls into despair, latches onto someone else and forgets where he came from.

Remember the arc after the prison fell? He was stuck with Beth, thought the group is dead. But instead of making use of his tracking abilities, determination, pure willpower to prove himself wrong and see that most folks are still alive or just whatever to find out if the other’s are really dead, he succumbs to pessimism and suggests to Beth to just stay at the funeral home, doing nothing but playing house. He would’ve stayed there for much longer if Beth hadn’t gone kidnapped. Once Beth was gone, he stucked to the Claimers until Rick came along again…

Same thing with Leah. He believed his leader (Rick) to be dead, his guilt made him shy away from his family, he lived in the woods until Leah came along. It took him longer than with Beth to finally give in and decide to stay with Leah, but still - he isolated himself from the thoughts of his family and stayed with a woman - and yet again, he would have stayed there, away from his family, if Leah hadn’t left herself. He didn’t have a clue about what’s happening in Alexandria, with the Whisperers, with Rick’s kids and probably didn’t wanna know either.

Rinse and repeat we got Isabelle. In this case, it’s even worse because Daryl’s stuck in another country. But again he’s far away from his family, again there is a woman, again he’s latching onto her and yet again he is forgetting about his people back home to the point where he’s almost not considering to go back anymore at all.

Daryl always needs a circumstance, a death, a kidnapping, or a person (Carol?) to pull him back to reality and to remind him who he is and what he might’ve left behind.

It’s also highly ironic to me that the Villain of the season, that cult leader, describes what’s going on with Daryl in Episode 2x03 perfectly:

“Must be hard living without a semblance of faith. No organizing principle, nothing to cling to [….] a man alone it’s a sad state.”

Daryl always believes he is alone, that his group has given up on him. His low self-esteem and the thing’s he had to endure prevent him from seeing how loved he is. But he’s never been truly alone, after he found Rick’s group.

Having to fend for himself as a kid has left his mark on him, so he’s clinging onto people, desperate of not wanting to be alone.

Now that doesn’t go without saying that I don’t believe Daryl didn’t find something in France. He found what he wishes for - a family of his own and to not be the “lonely man” anymore. But it’s time to come back from Neverland, to achieve that dream.

With all of these things considered I start to believe the Daryl we all know and love is still there - he just needs to be reminded that he is loved, cared for and so, so missed.

Edit: Some more notes. That is just a poor explanation/interpretation of bad writing in the Spin-Off. When Daryl said he wasn’t sure of what he was looking for when he left the Commonwealth, that made it clear as day the writers absolutely intend to retcon this beloved character and all of his core characteristics to pretend Daryl’s this blank page, a character without history. But this doesn’t work and I hope they’ll notice it soon enough.

As much as I love Cascina's face and Shannon Woodward's interpretation of Dina, watching Isabel Merced play her in the show really brought home just how tragic her story is.

She is ~19 and an orphan living at the end of the world. Her sister was murdered. She got pregnant while (probably) still a teen and had to give birth without any real medical assistance. Her girlfriend, the person for whom she almost died and on whom she is forced to rely upon for food, decides to abandon her to end her revenge quest, too suicidal to realize that she can't support herself and JJ without help.

Dina is literally just a child too.

Okie!! I actually have multiple 😭 but I'll talk about my baby girl miss Isabelle Stark 🤭 (yes I name my oc the same thing in other medias - she has her own little multiverse in my mind)

⋆⁺₊⋆ cliche, but she's the oldest daughter to Tony Stark and Morgan Stark's half-sister.

⋆⁺₊⋆ her mother died in childbirth so she's never actually really known her and because she is the product of a one night stand Tony didn't really know her mother either (which is something he hates himself for because she deserves to know about her)

⋆⁺₊⋆ that said, Pepper has always been like a maternal figure to her. So my girl was OVERJOYED when Tony finally proposed to her.

⋆⁺₊⋆ she's incredibly smart for her age, but as Tony says "she's a Stark, of course she's smart".

⋆⁺₊⋆ another cliche, but she does become friends with Peter Parker (I should mention this is definitely MCU centred lol) as well Ned and MJ.

⋆⁺₊⋆ actually, her and Peter start to have little crushes on each other and do start dating at one point. It's so cute.

⋆⁺₊⋆ she's also secretly made her first Iron Woman suit. Though people called her Iron Girl and she kinda just stuck with that lol (*cough* until Tony died and she picked up the mantle *cough*)

⋆⁺₊⋆ Tony wasn't happy about that lol, but he was impressed that she remembered how to build one after being like (in his eyes at least) a baby when helping him with his.

Dc saw the Jason and Helena fans at war with each other and decided to team them up together

What a great day to be a fan of both of them!

I’ve wanted to see what the fleshed out dynamic between Helena and Jason could be like for years so I really hope this goes well, they have both gone through similar yet very different situations in their lives, dealing with they’re own issues with Bruce, the mob, possibly religious trauma?

And with those shared experiences I feel like they could either end up being close or with them barely being able to stand in the same room with each other. (more so Helena than Jason) but there’s so much they could do with either direction

I just really, really, hope they don’t make Helena Jason love interest in this and change there minds on that, at least based on the covers they seem to be hinting at that :( —

( tho I am kinda laughing and annoyed at the repeating pattern of Jason getting with one of dick ex love interest, even if I don’t enjoy those ships personally, it feels like jaybabs again💔) I know dick is mad

The writer for this new run wrote beast world Gotham which had writing for Jason I really enjoyed, I think that was honestly some of the best writers we’ve gotten for Jason in a while, so I hope she pulls through for him again and makes up for the bullshit that’s been happening in the last like two years (longer depending on who you ask) and let’s Helena shine as her own character!

Anyways I’m very excited to see how this goes! :)

Who is gonna be Laurent’s dad?

Now, when it comes to Laurent, people have one opinion: He’s set up to be Daryl’s adopted son since season 1 of his spin-off. But what if there’s someone else in the picture, who could take the boy under his wings?

The following contains spoilers for Daryl Dixon season 2 (I haven’t seen all episodes yet, this is based on Spoilers I read online)

Back in season 1 of Daryl’s spin-off, Daryl meets Laurent and is supposed to protect him. During the journey across the post-apocalyptic France, they start to bond, so much, that he decides to miss his boat back home to stay back and save him. Now, Daryl being Daryl - he’s always been great with kids - teaches Laurent basic survival skills, how to gut a gut a fish, we even see how he teaches him American Baseball. Laurent has clearly become important to him during his (short) time in France.

Now, Laurent being Daryl’s adoptive son makes sense for Daryl, storytelling-wise. Daryl’s a father - but not just any father, he’s the father of a bright, young boy. I’d love to see Daryl as a girl-dad, that would be freaking adorable, but taking care of a boy would make sense for his character. Having grown up with an abusive Dad himself, having a son would probably heal Daryl’s inner child in ways a daughter couldn’t. This is shown in an episode in season 1 when Laurent cuts his boat loose - Daryl lashes out on him, calls him names, says he’s worthless - and then he stops himself, hugs Laurent and says he didn’t mean it. With a son he can grow, he can heal, and he can break the “Dixon”-curse and pass on the great morals and values he’s come to achieve during his character arc.

Also, Laurent is everything Daryl wasn’t as a kid. Book-smart, educated, shielded from the world, well protected, religious. He totally contradicts what Daryl always stood for - which is why they can benefit from one another. Through Laurent, Daryl learns to appreciate the spiritual side of things, through Daryl, Laurent learns how to navigate the cruel and harsh world they find themselves in without losing himself.

Having Laurent as a son would be the perfect conclusion to Daryl’s character arc. Only that we haven’t seen the end of his arc yet.

But there’s someone else. A parent. A father. A man who lost his own son. Ash.

We don’t know a lot about Ash. His character’s sole purpose is to bring Carol to France, where she wants to find Daryl.

But we know he is compassionate, a warmhearted man - and a father who lost his son and is still not over his grief, living alone near his son’s grave, which he visits every morning. At the end of season 2, I believe, he escapes with Laurent on the plane to fly back to America. Daryl and Carol stay back.

Since we don’t know if Manish Dayal (the actor who plays Ash) is part of DD: S3, we have to assume that his character arc is complete. A grieving father, who travels abroad due to Carol’s lies, finds himself in chaos, and returns to America with a new son and a newfound purpose as a reward or a recompense for all he had to endure during his travels - it would be the perfect circle and a perfectly tied up character arc.

With Daryl Dixon Season 3 and possibly a Season 4 coming, it’s clear that Daryl’s character arc is not complete yet and that he still has a way to go. Laurent is not coming along to Spain and it might be a while until Daryl and Carol make their way back to the states - if ever.

Daryl’s and Laurents bond is undoubtedly strong, but we also have to take into consideration what Norman Reedus himself said in that Entertainment-Weekly interview (that was about the Isabelle-kiss, but it also fits here)

Rick had a family. Glenn has a son, even though he never got to see him.

So maybe, just maybe, Daryl’s happy ending is still somewhere out on the horizon.

I thought it might be a little hard to tell who's fronting at times because we're not the best about straight up telling people. There are ways to tell by how we actually type out our messages, and we've compiled them here:

Sometimes capitalizes things, but its mostly just what our phone automatically does. Often drops the ending g on words like going, playing, eating, etc. Hardly ever uses puntuation, even for contractions. Can't use 'naughty' words due to profanity filter.
