80's Jervis' referring to literally almost everyone as "my dear" or "my darling" (even Batman) can only lead me to believe that 90% of the time he does it to belittle whoever he's talking to, and that when he is actually very fond of someone, the pet names get 10x worse.
More images of Jervis doing this below the cut!

ULTIMATE SUPERGIRL READING GUIDE
Tumblr media
since i've been asked a few times in the past for various reading guides for kara, i thought i'd compile them all into one post for the sake of convenience!
this guide has reading orders for supergirl comics in PRE-CRISIS (1959-1985), POST-CRISIS (2004-2011), NEW 52 (2011-2016), REBIRTH (2016-2021), and INFINITE FRONTIER (2021-present).
if you have any questions at all don't be afraid to shoot me an ask!
for each section bolded comics are required, italicized comics are recommended, and everything else is optional!

hi zeph it’s daisy arrow-ettes :) what would you say is required reading for azdick. asking for a friend
HI DAISY!!!!!! no need to announce yourself i would know our beloved daisymayys anywhere 🩷
this is Such a good question & i am SO HONOURED you asked me (on behalf of your friend, of course 😊) plus if anyone else has seen azdick posts floating around & is thinking "so who's this blonde bitch, anyway?" this guide is also for you!!
i tend to assume that people know a decent amount about dick already, even if just by proximity, so i'll be focusing on jpv here. if you're totally unfamiliar with jpv, you'll want to start with sword of azrael 1992, one of my favouriteeeee mini series of all time. it establishes his origin, personality, & acquaintance with batman in four short issues, plus it's packed full of charm to boot!!
sword of azrael is then followed by the iconic knightfall saga. would i recommend it? ABSOLUTELY. it is, however, super long, & i know lots of people might not be up to that. so if you don't have the time or means to read the entirety of the knightfall saga & you just want to get an idea of jean-paul & dick's dynamic throughout that arc, i'd say the essential azdick reading is: batman #500, shadow of the bat #29, detective comics #676, batman #510, shadow of the bat #30, & detective comics #677.
these should give you an overview of how nightwing feels about azrael/jean-paul + their dramatic confrontation in knightsend. once you've finished the knightfall saga or the condensed azdick reading above, you can jump into azrael 1995, of which #13 is jpv & dick focused. gotham knights #14 similarly spotlights both characters, while gotham knights #30 marks the start of their next falling out, which continues in azrael #91 & #93.
after this, the next jpv & dick conflict doesn't occur for another twenty years or so, in detective comics #1087. & that sums up my personal azdick required reading!!
reading these issues will give you a solid sense of their dynamic, but to understand why they react the way they do i would absolutely recommend reading knightfall through knightsend + no man's land if you get a chance!! the major preboot arcs may seem daunting for their sheer length, but they're well-collected in pretty straightforward volumes, and the stories themselves are genuinely killer.
azrael + azrael: agent of the bat are must-reads for jpv's characterisation – he has the gentlest, most awkwardly endearing personality, & he grapples with some really powerful questions of identity & belonging throughout. if you want a general idea of what you'd be getting into, i'm dropping an assortment of beloved jpv/azrael moments from my screenshots folder below to hopefully entice you to pick up azrael 95:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
if you want to take the plunge & read EVERYTHING jpv (& you do, right? of course you do) i've also devised a handy spreadsheet guide to reading his knightfall era appearances!! the chronological list of jpv appearances i referenced is sourced from the dcuguide, i simply colour-coded each issue according to the trade paperback it's collected in for easier reading – e.g. all knightfall vol 1 appearances are in dark pink, all knightsend appearances are in red, etc etc. any uncollected issues are left grey – they aren't included in the TPBs so you'll have to seek them out individually if you want to read them.
plus, if you make a copy of the spreadsheet to keep on your personal drive, you can either tick off each issue individually as you read it, or you can tick them off in batches as you finish each TPB. whatever works for you!! the link to the spreadsheet is here, so go forth & get jpvheaded <333

Getting in to comics is rather hard and finding a good starting place or a good recommended must-reads is hard and confusing and you typically get hundreds of different answers.
This is my personal list, that I'm working through and hope to collect. I've done quite a bit of research and feel like this is a adequate reading list for modern (post-crisis) Bruce Wayne
Anyway, here's my list:
:readmore:
Batman: Year One (Batman Vol 1 #404-#407)
This story line established the back story for Batman in the post-crisis timeline, along with the back stories for Commissioner Gordon and Selina Kyle. Not necessarily canon anymore, but a good story to get the feel of the characters
Batman: The Man Who Laughs
This is a one shot that was published in 2005 that tells the story of Batman’s first encounter with the Joker roughly a year after the Batman’s debut in Gotham. Based on the Joker’s original first appearance in Batman Vol 1 #1.
Batman and the Monster Men
This is a 6 part mini series that takes place sometime after Batman: Year One and Batman: The Man Who Laughs. First half of the Dark Moon Rising series. Story revolves around Batman’s first dealing with Hugo Strange
Batman and the Mad Monk
This is another 6 part mini series that is the second half of the Dark Moon Rising series. It is a retelling of a story from Detective Comics Vol 1 #31-32
Batman: The Long Halloween
This is a 13 part limited series, that serves as a re-introduction of the Calendar Man and features a wide array of Batman’s rouge gallery such as Two-Face, Scarecrow, Riddler, Joker, and Poison Ivy.
Batman: Dark Victory
This is a 14 part limited series that is a sequel to The Long Halloween. The main case in the story is a turf war between Two-Face and the Falcon Mafia. It also serves as a re-telling of Dick Grayson’s Robin origin.
Batman: Birth of the Demon (TPB)
This is a collection of 3 Batman one shots: Son of the Demon, Bride of the Demon, and Birth of the Demon. All stories center around Ra’s al Ghul and Talia al Ghul.
Batman: Strange Apparitions (Detective Comics Vol 1 #469-479)
This collection reintroduces Golden Age villains such as Hugo Strange and Dead shot along with introducing new villains such as Doctor Phosphorus and Clayface III.
Batman: The Killing Joke
A 60 page one shot that hints at the Jokers true identity, along with pushing the Jokers madness to new extremes, and showing just how dangerous he can be.
Batman: the Cult
This is a 4 issue mini series, in which Batman gets captured, torture and brain washed by Deacon Blackfire. This is also one of the few stories written by Jim Starlin that shows Jason Todd in a favorable light, as Starlin had a dislike for the character and kid sidekicks.
Batman: Death in the Family (Batman Vol 1 #426-429)
The famous 4 issue story arc that allowed readers to vote on the fate of the then current Robin, Jason Todd.
Batman: A Lonely Place of Dying (Batman Vol 1 #440-442)
This story is the introduction of Tim Drake and his taking of the Robin Mantle. The story also involves a case with Two-Face
Batman: The Last Arkham (Batman: Shadow of the Bat #1-4)
This story shows us the inner workings of Arkham Asylum, along with introducing new villains such as Zsasz, Jeremiah Arkham, and Amygdala
Batman: Gothic (Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #6-10)
In this story we get to see glimpses of Bruce Wayne childhood.
Batman: Venom (Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #16-20)
This story introduces us to the strength-enhancing drug, venom
Batman: Knightfall (Batman Vol 1 #492-510, #512-515; Batman: Shadow of the Bat #16-30, 32-35; Catwoman Vol ? #6-7, #12-13; Detective Comics Vol 1 #659-677, #679-682; Justice League Task Force #5-6; Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #59-63; Robin #7-9, 11-14; Showcase ‘93 #7-8; Showcase '94 #10)
The Knightfall collection is a trilogy consisting of Knightfall, Knightquest, and KnightsEnd. In the story, Batman is crippled by Bane leading to him enlisting help from Jean-Paul Valley, while he recovers. Jean-Paul becomes increasingly unstable and violent, ruining Batman’s reputation until Bruce can finally put an end to it. The story had long term ramifications in the batcannon as Bruce had to rebuild the trust everyone had for him.
Batman: Contagion (Batman: Shadow of the Bat #48-49; Detective Comics Vol 1 #695, #696; Robin Vol 4 #27-28; Catwoman Vol #31-32; Azrael #15-16; Batman Vol 1 #529; Batman: Chronicles #4)

The final crossover storyline leading in to No Man’s Land. After a earthquake, Gotham’s heros have to band together to help the citizens in the aftermath.
Batman: No Man’s Land (Azrael #47-61; Batman Vol 1 #560-574; Batman: Harley Quinn; Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #116-126; Batman: No Man’s Land #1-0; Batman No Man’s Land Secret Files and Origins; Batman: Day of Judgement; Batman: Shadow of the Bat #80-94; The Batman Chronicles #16-18; Catwoman Vol 2 #72-77; Detective Comics Vol 1 #727-741; JLA #32; Nightwing Vol 1 #35-39; Nightwing Secret Files and Origins; Robin Vol 4 #67-73; Young Justice: In No Man’s Land)

Welcome
Hello! Welcome to my blog, The Supergirl Archives! My name is SK and this is side project born out of my love for Supergirl.
So, what are the Supergirl Archives? This is going to be my incomplete journey through the history of Supergirl comics. I’ve long loved the character, and since I have a DC Universe Infinite (DCUI) account, I thought it would be fun to go back and read through a bunch of old Supergirl comics. And I thought it might be fun to chronicle what I read.
This is what I’m planning to read:
THE ADVENTURES OF EARTH-ONE KARA ZOR-EL
Action Comics (vol 1) #252-359, 364-376, running from 1959-1969
Adventures Comics (vol 1) #278, 340, 360, 368, 374, 381-424, running from 1960-1972
Supergirl (vol 1). Supergirl’s first standalone series that ran for 10 issues from 1972-1974.
Supergirl (vol 2). Her second standalone series that ran for 23 issues from 1982-1984.
Superboy (vol 1) #80, from 1960.
the Brave and the Bold (vol 1) #63 147, 160, from 1965-1980.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (vol 1). The newest mini-series that ran for 8 issues in 2021-2022.
Why “an incomplete journey”? Well, I don’t know if I’m going to read every issue listed, but I’m going to read as many as I can (while still enjoying it), and I’m going to make sure that at the very worst, I’ll sample from each run. Also, I just can’t read everything because DCUI has a lot of gaps in its Action Comics library and there’s probably other issues of Adventure Comics and Action Comics that feature Supergirl, but what I listed are the major runs available to me.
As of right now, I’m going to focus on the Supergirl stories that happened in the main DCU continuity, which means unfortunately right now AU comics like Gotham City Garage, Bombshells, and the Dark Knights of Steel aren’t on my list, even if they are fantastic.
I’m specifically a fan of Kara Zor-El, but I wanted to read the Matrix and Linda Danvers runs, especially because they’re actually the versions of Supergirl that were around when I first got into her.
IF you’re a hardcore Supergirl fan, you know what happened to Kara in 1985. I haven’t decided if I want to read Crisis on Infinite Earths for this, but a part of me does feel like it’s an important enough part of Supergirl’s comic history to justify it.
I’m looking forward to having fun with this! And to read a bunch of comics (admittedly of varying degrees of quality) about one of my favorite superheroes!

Batman: Where to start
***long post***
Getting in to comics is rather hard and finding a good starting place or a good recommended must-reads is hard and confusing and you typically get hundreds of different answers.
This is my personal list, that I'm working through and hope to collect. I've done quite a bit of research and feel like this is a adequate reading list for modern (post-crisis) Bruce Wayne
Anyways here's the list in primary chronological order:
Batman: Year One (Batman Vol 1 #404-#407)
This story line established the back story for Batman in the post-crisis timeline, along with the back stories for Commissioner Gordon and Selina Kyle. Not necessarily canon anymore, but a good story to get the feel of the characters
Batman: The Man Who Laughs
This is a one shot that was published in 2005 that tells the story of Batman's first encounter with the Joker roughly a year after the Batman's debut in Gotham. Based on the Joker's original first appearance in Batman Vol 1 #1.
Batman and the Monster Men
This is a 6 part mini series that takes place sometime after Batman: Year One and Batman: The Man Who Laughs. First half of the Dark Moon Rising series. Story revolves around Batman's first dealing with Hugo Strange
Batman and the Mad Monk
This is another 6 part mini series that is the second half of the Dark Moon Rising series. It is a retelling of a story from Detective Comics Vol 1 #31-32
Batman: The Long Halloween
This is a 13 part limited series, that serves as a re-introduction of the Calendar Man and features a wide array of Batman's rouge gallery such as Two-Face, Scarecrow, Riddler, Joker, and Poison Ivy.
Batman: Dark Victory
This is a 14 part limited series that is a sequel to The Long Halloween. The main case in the story is a turf war between Two-Face and the Falcon Mafia. It also serves as a re-telling of Dick Grayson's Robin origin.
Batman: Birth of the Demon (TPB)
This is a collection of 3 Batman one shots: Son of the Demon, Bride of the Demon, and Birth of the Demon. All stories center around Ra's al Ghul and Talia al Ghul.
#6-7, #12-13; Detective Comics Vol 1 #659-677, #679-682; Justice League Task Force #5-6; Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #59-63; Robin #7-9, 11-14; Showcase '93 #7-8; Showcase '94 #10)
The Knightfall collection is a trilogy consisting of Knightfall, Knightquest, and KnightsEnd. In the story, Batman is crippled by Bane leading to him enlisting help from Jean-Paul Valley, while he recovers. Jean-Paul becomes increasingly unstable and violent, ruining Batman's reputation until Bruce can finally put an end to it. The story had long term ramifications in the batcannon as Bruce had to rebuild the trust everyone had for him.

Dick and Tim – brothers in arms
Tumblr media
So I got this ask. And it’s a good thing I got it the first night of my summer vacation, and the weather hasn't been great ;-)
Tumblr media
Once I started digging for comics with both Tim and Dick, I found several that I've never read. I got the impression Anonymous would like a complete list, so I just kept going. But this means I don't know if they even interact in some of the books, or if they make "blink and you miss it" guest appearances.
I'm sorry if they, by any chance, was asking for reading recommendations for good Dick and Tim moments and not The Complete List... Looking at the number of comics here that I haven't read/can't remember, I'm not really qualified to answer that. But if I had to try, I would mention:

I'm going to skip post-Flashpoint because, well, there's hardly anything there. The worst thing with Flashpoint/New 52, in my opinion, was that it destroyed relationships between characters who used to be family, but ended up hardly knowing or even liking each other. :-(

Detective Comics #975. By James Tynion IV, art Álvaro Martínez and Raúl Fernández.
The only panel worth mentioning with Dick and Tim is from DC #975. Yes, it's sad – one of the best brotherly relationships in DC turned into dust. Here's to hoping future writers will pick up on their wonderful dynamic at some time.

Head-Hunt by a Mad Hatter
Tumblr media
DETECTIVE COMICS #510 JANUARY 1982 BY GERRY CONWAY, GENE COLAN AND KLAUS JANSON
SYNOPSIS (FROM DC WIKIA)
During the Mayoral Debate between Arthur Reeves and Hamilton Hill, Batman stops a crime in progress and earns the congratulations of the people, except for Reeves, who is determined to bring Batman down and he knows he can with the recent evidence he has been provided.
Meanwhile, Lucius Fox is working late at Wayne Enterprises, when his computer starts acting strange and it blows with a big explosion that leaves him unconscious. The whole scene is watched by a mysterious man who calls himself the Mad Hatter.
The next morning, the Gotham City Police Department arrive at the scene and Commissioner Gordon calls Bruce Wayne to inform him of the events. Lucius Fox has been kidnapped and there is only one clue left behind: a business card. Bruce dials the number and The Mad Hatter demands two million dollars for the ransom of Lucius Fox. As the call is being traced by the police, Bruce Wayne agrees and the Hatter gives him the location where to drop the money.
Tumblr media
Later, Bruce investigates the abduction scene and finds connections to the Mad Hatter. After learning that Hatter has been using electronic parts to tamper with computers, Bruce deduces that the Mad Hatter will most likely double-cross them.
True to Batman's suspicions, Mad Hatter doesn't intend to retrieve the money by himself and instead, he will first turn Lucius Fox into a mindless zombie using a special machine of his own creation. Before Hatter can proceed, Batman arrives at his hideout and takes down all of the Hatter's hired thugs, before he confronts the mastermind behind it all. Hatter threatens Batman with erasing Fox's memories and Batman makes a bargain in exchange for Lucius. Hatter agrees and Batman is placed in the madman's mind device. Before the madman can start the process, Batman says that he recalls this foe and that he is not the same as the Mad Hatter he has confronted the past years. The Mad Hatter replies that indeed Batman sould recall him as they encountered each other more than a decade ago. The villain explains that he is the original Mad Hatter and that after he was captured by Batman, an imposter took his place and used his name to start a crime career while he was locked away in a sanitarium. But now, he has escaped and after disposing of the imposter, the real Mad Hatter started a new crime spree.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After revealing the truth, the Mad Hatter activates the machine that will erase Batman's memories. After the deed is done, the Mad Hatter celebrates his victory, but Batman recovers in no time and captures the Mad Hatter for good. When the police arrive to take away the crooks, Batman explains to Commissioner Gordon that he had deduced that Hatter had some kind of mind-machine and that he took the precaution to protect his head gear. Despite the victory over the Mad Hatter, Batman has another concern as Arthur Reeves has declared to the press that he can and will reveal Batman's secret identity.
REVIEW
So this comic explains some inconsistencies around Mad Hatter since the Golden Age. I remember that at some point I heard about there being two Mad Hatters, but I keep forgetting because THEY HAVE THE SAME NAME. Technically, the second Mad Hatter’s name has never been revealed.
It is hard to get nit picky with Mad Hatter. His new machine doesn’t make much sense in terms of what is possible, but at the same time, we already accepted that he was able to control minds with hats.
When I saw Batman on that chair I thought: “Great, this is where he gets free of Ivy’s hypnotic spell”. But no, Batman was already prepared for the occasion.
Just like in Batman, Colan and Janson do a nice job at eye-popping action.
I give the issue a score of 7

PRE-ORACLE BARBARA GORDON READING GUIDE
Tumblr media
aka a (mostly) pre-crisis batgirl reading guide! for the following comics: bolded is required reading, italicized is recommended, and everything else is optional.
[note: for the most part babs appears in the back-up "batgirl" story in each issue of detective comics!]
detective comics (1937) #359, 363
world's finest comics (1941) #169
detective comics (1937) #388-389, 392-393, 396-397, 400-401, 404-409, 410-411, 412-413, 416-417, 418-419, 420-421, 422-424
the superman family (1974) #171
the batman family (1975) #1, 3-7, 9-18, 20
detective comics (1937) #483, 484-489, 490, 491-495, 496, 497-499, 501-502, 505-506, 508-510, 512-513, 514-517, 518-519
crisis on infinite earths (1985) #4, 7
secret origins (1986) #20
batgirl special (1988)
and done! you could read batman: the killing joke (1988) here, but considering that babs is just there to get shot and assaulted for bruce and jim's manpain, i don't recommend it. instead read the batman chronicles (1995) #5 "oracle year one" if you want to see the birth of oracle!babs :)

Hi! Thank you for the list on current supergirl comics! Would you be able to do a similar one for the old ones? I know there's golden age but after that I get a little lost because she's in Superman comics and the legions comics a lot :(
of course! for the action comics issues you’ll have to skip to the second or third story to get to Kara’s part of the comic, it’s always titled “Supergirl”.
Action Comics (1938) #252, 258, 267, 276, 278-282, 285, 295, 309-310, 313, 317-318, 366-368, 372, 374 World’s Finest (1941) #169 Adventure Comics (1938) #381, 386, 391, 395, 397, 406-424 Supergirl (1972) #1-10 Superboy (1949) #204 (second story) The Superman Family (1974) #165, 168, 171, 177 Justice League of America (1960) #132-134 The Superman Family #183-189, 203, 208-214, 217 Superman (1939) #373 (second story titled “an eye (and ear) on the world!”) Detective Comics (1937) #508-510 The Superman Family #221-222 Supergirl (1982) #1-23 Legion of Superheroes (1980) #300-303 Tales of the Legion (1985) #4-7 Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985) #4-7 Christmas with the Super-heroes (1988) #2 (Kara appears in the last story titled “should auld acquaintance be forgot”)
this is just what i’d personally recommend for her silver/bronze age appearances. theres like three decades worth of comics to get through for kara in pre crisis, so i’ve omitted quite a few while also trying to keep it pretty comprehensive.
if you want guides for her in post crisis or new 52 just let me know!! i'm more than happy to help out <33

i've been rereading a lot of old supergirl comics lately, so i thought i'd make a post with some pre-crisis recommendations for kara <3
THE GIRL WITH THE SEE-THROUGH MIND!
Tumblr media
the superman family #168 kara and lena attempt to help a young empath as she suddenly feels compelled to kill herself. one of my fav issues for lena and one of the best storylines from kara's student advisor era. i also really love the relationship kara has with lena, both as linda danvers and as supergirl.
THE BRIMSTONE CONNECTION
Tumblr media
the brave and the bold #160 kara's foster father goes missing so she teams up with batman to track him down. i think kara and bruce have a fun dynamic together and i really like how she's characterized here. i do think that this issue kind of downplays how intelligent kara is in order to uplift bruce's detective skills, but regardless i think its a fun team-up.
THE SUPERGIRL GANG
Tumblr media
adventure comics #381 kara goes undercover at an all-girls crime fighting school to investigate a string of robberies committed unknowingly by the students. i really like how this issue focuses a bit on kara's investigative abilities and the things she can do better as linda danvers rather than as supergirl. also babs makes an appearance in this story (rise pre-crisis karababs warriors) <3
THE BATTLE FOR SURVIVAL!
Tumblr media
adventure comics #412 kara is chosen to fight in a ceremonial battle by a distant planet's ruler. this issue is SO fun and showcases kara's strength so well. it also features art from art saaf who is one of my favorite artists for pre-crisis kara :)
THE ATTACK OF THE ANNIHILATOR!
Tumblr media
detective comics #508-510 kara flies to gotham and helps barbara gordon defeat a crazed and mutated scientist who calls himself the annihilator. unfortunately this is the only multi-issue arc kara and babs have together during pre-crisis (not counting crisis on infinite earths i guess), but i do really enjoy this story (again, rise pre-crisis karababs warriors).
A HEAD-FULL OF SNAKES!
Tumblr media
supergirl vol 1 #8 after portraying medusa in a play, a curse is placed on kara that turns her hair into snakes and anyone she looks at into stone. another really fun story :) this issue is definitely one of the best from supergirl vol 1.
CRYPT OF THE FROZEN GRAVES
Tumblr media
adventure comics #424 kara attempts to uncover the crimes of the san francisco syndicate by gathering information from a former criminal informer. the art in this issue is SO pretty and i really love how kara is characterized here <3 also features the last appearance of pre-crisis nasty luthor </3
THE VISITORS FROM THE VOID
Tumblr media
the superman family #184-186 when fred danvers mysteriously disappears after accepting a secret government job, edna danvers seeks out kara for help in finding him. i really love this storyline for how it develops the relationship between kara and her foster parents, and it's a great showcase of kara's anger and how protective she can be over the people she loves.
CELEBRATION!
Tumblr media
supergirl vol 2 #20 clark asks kara to meet him at midvale for a surprise—but before she can do that, kara must battle the parasite. kara's 25th anniversary issue :) you can also read action comics #555 before this if you'd like, it takes place concurrently with this issue but shows clark's pov.
and finally—i already included this story on my pinned post with other supergirl storyline recommendations, but i really like this arc so i'm putting it here too:
THE STRANGE REVENGE OF LENA LUTHOR!
Tumblr media
the superman family #211-214 takes place within one of my favorite era’s for supergirl! kara (living as an actress in new york at the time) helps her old friend lena thorul get a job and a place to stay after lena’s husband dies. after the villain mind-bomber boost’s her psychic abilities, lena discovers kara’s secret identity.

Batman: Where to Start
*** long post***
Getting in to comics is rather hard and finding a good starting place or a good recommended must-reads is hard and confusing and you typically get hundreds of different answers.
This is my personal list, that I'm working through and hope to collect. I've done quite a bit of research and feel like this is a adequate reading list for modern (post-crisis) Bruce Wayne
Anyway, here's my list:
A cross over even where a deadly virus sweeps through Gotham. One of the story lines leading in to the No Man’s Land event.
Batman: Legacy (Batman Vol 1 #533-534; Batman: Bane; Bane of the Demon #1-4; Batman: Shadow of the Bat #53-54; Catwoman Vol 2 #33-36; Detective Comics Vol 1 #700-702; Robin Vol 4 #32-33)
