I rewatched Tombstone recently and got curious about whether “I’m your huckleberry” was a common phrase at the time.

Turns out it was, meaning “I’m what you’re looking for.”

Now, while I can’t say canonically how much time Cas spent on earth while that phrase was in use, it’s at least plausible that he knew what it meant. That’s the line that stuck with him. That he looked Dean right in the eyes and quoted.

I think this is just one of many times along the way that Cas told Dean how he felt in a way he knew Dean wouldn’t hear or understand, but he couldn’t help himself. He needed to let it out a little bit.

And there are parallels — like Doc, he was there to step in and protect his friend with his life until the very end. So he’s relating to Doc, and has a similar commitment to Dean, the one person who gets him.

Remember, just before he dies, Doc says to Wyatt “you're the only human being in my entire life who ever gave me hope.”

And just before Cas goes to the Empty, he says to Dean “Knowing you has changed me. Because you cared, I cared. I cared about you. I cared about Sam, I cared about Jack... I cared about the whole world because of you.”

Though tbh I’m both cases I consider myself robbed of make-out scenes.

I’m watching “Paper Soldiers” and I think a lot of my head canons about younger/lawyer Deeks come from the scene where Kensi says she’s trying to imagine Deeks as a public defender. He says he looked exactly the same, was extremely good at his job, and public defenders are rebels.

I’m just being deranged before bed

Was thinking about Hotaru as a teenager and a child and how he was someone so sweet. Shy, quiet, no friends, always meant well. I think he was the sort of kid beloved by older people for his quietness and how polite he was, but really struggled to connect with his peers. I think about how Hotaru knew his mother worked hard to provide for them so he minimized himself at a young age as to not cause her trouble.

When Hotaru rejects help as an adult, it’s not due to pride. It sounds like pride, he frames it as pride, but it’s actually just the fact that he can’t bear to bother someone in that way, he can’t bear to trouble them when he already hates himself and knows that he’s being an inconvenience in being hurt.

I love him. I love how he takes these parts of himself and makes himself an unreliable narrator about himself. He’s the sort of person to call you troublesome and annoying while he still looks out for you.

I think about how he doesn’t actually like talking. And yet he talks. All the time. He talks for his job. He talks to insult people. He talks and talks and talks and suddenly you get him genuinely comfortable and he’s not talking anymore. He wrongfully frames everything about himself so no one knows him, but I love how if you pay attention, you see the inconsistencies.

You see how considerate he is of others, how he asks about them and their needs first even if he frames it as being a bother or is being combative. But what’s really there about Hotaru are the things that he doesn’t say. His body language is more honest than his verbal language.

Idk I’m just thinking about how he is. A little guy. This isn’t as focused Hotaru analysis but it’s more me mourning the person he used to be. He used to be so soft and sweet and open and gentle. He used to be the sort of kid who would babysit and pet sit for neighbors, who would sometimes buy things at the corner store for elderly neighbors. He was the type of person who was so overjoyed to receive his first camera and took countless pictures of the beach.

Hotaru would cry when Gumi got hurt on his behalf. Like, physically cry and sniffle when he bandaged her and ask her not to get hurt again, not for him. And the thing is, I haven’t had the chance to write it and I think Hotaru himself hopes I never will lmao, but if someone got hurt for him in present day, he’d cry in frustration and concern even if he’s raising his voice.

So many things change and his defense mechanisms are more refined but like. He’s still. So sweet. Deep down. Oh my god. Goodnight

Fun Story to Share.

I got my (now 18-year-old) daughter into Ao3 back in 2021. I taught her she should always comment - even if the fic looks old or abandoned or whatever. She did.

Well - she got this email this morning:

The fic was written in 2014 and essentially abandoned.

Bethy read and reviewed in 2021 (and was actually the only person who had commented at all).

Today in 2025 - the final chapter was posted by the author and this was her reply to Bethy’s comment.
