do you have any tips for like... paneling? your lil comics, if i could call them that(?) with Dave are well made (to me at least) and I'd like to get into making comics! or if you know any resources that helped you. :') - sincerely, a beginner.

sorry to be answering this so late, wanted to try and give some kinda proper advice haha so what i do is i just make my posts as long as possible so that it takes up like all of ppls dash, this means they are forced to look at it and engage with it! no ok but for real, first off this is just how i do things and by no means any sort of proper tutorial or anything, most of this is prob kinda basic and intuitive stuff, but its good to be reminded of the basics and to notice why you might be doing said things intuitively so you can start doing it intentionally so how i approach things is by picking a focus panel whats the Punchline/Emotional pay off for the page/comic? and then i try and build the rest around that for actual Comics not every page is gonna have one of those ofcourse and thats fine i tend to often have to many focus panels,,,, lmao(which is why my posts end up so long,,,,) i try to group similar panels and make them smaller, it saves space, makes it so the attention goes to the more unique panels and makes things feel more sequential(or u can do like me and have too many similar panels and think, what if i just make it an animation, its just a few extra frames right,,,?<- clueless(i have done this twice now,,, the second is still a wip,,, )) heres one of my posts deconstructed using all this, id do more of them but i dont wanna make this even longer asdsd, but i think its pretty obvious to pick up on once you know the formula lol

after that i think its mostly just clear composition and flow so things dont get confusing(like what panel(also applies to text) youre suppose to read next and such(thats easier with this cus its usually just individual panels and not full pages)) edit: oh and resources that helped me, i mostly just looked at other comics, paying attention to how the paneling was effecting the story and mood! some comics ive looked at for paneling inspo are houseki no kuni, how they play with contrast and stuff, idk theyre all just very striking, i looked at ajin at some point as well for help with some action stuff, most action shonen are also great for that 2 so yeah, just find a comic scene that has the same vibe that youre trying to get and see how they did it, finding a few and comparing and contrasting what you feel works best thats my thought process while doing stuff at least! i hope this helps at least a bit haha

ALRIGHT! I told myself I would write this as a reward for finishing today's tasks, so lets go!

Here There Be - Director's Commentary :D!!

Starting with Chapter 1 part 1 (pages 1-4)

First of all, everyone say a big thank you to my friend and editor OurLadyOfCoffee for double checking the spelling and grammar for this comic.

Any mistakes in the writing are my own fault for making last minute changes and not showing her before posting. If she had gotten her hands on this page "missing in all the time in this city" would never have happened ( u_u)... I'll go back and fix the page eventually.

Pages 1 & 2 (and 20) did not exist in the original draft of the chapter. I made it to the lineart/inking stage and the page flow was not working. April's narration felt too cramped and boring. I completely redid the whole 4 page section, and the end the final result is so much better!

Page 1 - Panel 1 had two purposes! One, the establishing shot, introducing our setting. Two, to show that NYC is rebuilding after the Krang. Its been a few months and thanks to cartoon logic, they have made significant progress fixing everything.

I love to experiment with colour as a storytelling device. I use red/orange multiple times at specific points throughout the chapter. It simply morning in NYC or is there something dangerous on the horizon... (figuratively)? The good ol' "Red sky at morning, sailors take warning."

Page 1. Panel 2 has a little 1987 April reference with the lady in the jumpsuit on the right. I was really excited to see a few folks point it out, even if it's not quite the iconic yellow jumpsuit. The colour had to be muted or the bold yellow would pull attention away from April (the focus of the panel).

Hello Junior, what do you have there? Something that won't get context for a while? These panels almost didn't make it into the final cut due to page/panel limits. I was very happy that the added pages gave space for it.

Page 2 - someone sent an ask a while back confused about what April was saying, so to explain the text in a more straightforward way: "the mutants that started out as humans have been going missing, but no one knows how long it has been happening or who has taken them. April has figured out that the non-human based mutations disappeared first."

that orange again, this time over the spots where the now missing mutants used to be :)<. I have no idea if this sort of thing is too subtle or not subtle enough, but it makes me go eheehehee and rub my hands together like an evil mastermind.

Page 3 - I debated whether or not to have them move after the movie. How much structural damage did the Krang do on their way through? What are the chances of the lair being discovered because of this? Would the city be too focused on cleanup elsewhere to bother finding it? Do I really want to design a whole new lair when this one is cool and we barely got to see it? In the end I decided that it was more important to have a familiar visual that the readers can instantly identify as the turtle's home. We'll see if there are consequences for remaining in a potentially compromised lair. :)

Despite only showing two rooms in the page, I spent several hours gathering references and building a layout for the entire station lair. I do not control the hyperfocus, it controls me.

Did you know that there are two different designs for this one archway in the main room? I love seeing stuff like this! If an animation studio with multiple background artists can have small inconsequential inconsistencies like this, then it's completely ok if it happens in my own work. It's relieving in a weird way.

PAGE 3 - panel 5 is another way I tried to show that a few months have passed since the movie. They have put some work into unpacking some of those boxes stacked in the back.

Page 4 - Hello Two Phones Jones <3

The Jones Duo! They both have a little outfit change :D! CJ has a rough edged jean vest calling back to the 1990 movie with 03 colours. Casey has a base outfit colour change to match and a cropped hoodie reminiscent of 1987, in pink ofc.

I do not yet have the skills to show the fight that happened in that shipping yard, so I decided that this comic would begin in the tense quiet after it. This also starts us closer to the actual plot instead of dilly dallying. Maybe I'll eventually make a prelude comic to show what all went down.

Aaand that's pretty much it for April's 03 style narrated opening sequence! This is where the intro theme would start playing~

Thank you for the star, I hope this was interesting! I make so many small decisions per page, it's nice to share some of my thoughts. :)

lottie regresses quite tiny a lot of the time and is largely mute even when not regressed so she doesn 't often get to refer to nat with a nickname but that 's her papa ! sometimes she 'll gargle a "da !" or "pa !" , giggling at the way he lights up at this𓈒

lottie is the biggest daddy 's girl ! she 's soo smiley whenever his attention is on her , constantly giving him sloppy baby kisses & clinging to him𓈒 if she 's fussing even just seeing nat can calm her down𓈒 she loves being referred to as his lottie and his girl oh so much ! this always gets her blushy and giggly , babbling happily𓈒

a little ! lottie loves to wear dresses , especially flowy ones𓈒 on top of them providing her with a sense of gender euphoria , the lighter fabric is less itchy and less suffocating𓈒 she loves to stim by twirling around , making nat pepper the top of her head with kisses as he tells her how "freaking cute" she is ! he 's always telling her how pretty she is which gets her feeling shy𓈒

girl dad ! nat who learns to braid so he can braid his baby 's hair𓈒 lottie is very good at sitting still but sometimes if she 's especially tiny she 'll be extra clingy , holding onto nat 's arm making it hard to braid her curls𓈒 nat will chuckle , booping her nose𓈒 "silly baby𓈒 can daddy braid your pretty hair ?" lottie will grumble in protest not wanting to let go of her papa but with the promise of lots of cuddles after she 'll allow him to𓈒

lottie is a padded regressor although it is a touchy subject for her𓈒 the poor girl experiences a lot of dysphoria around the subject aside from the typical shyness and embarrassment𓈒 of course nat is suuuper understanding as he deals with similar feelings𓈒 unfortunately for lottie she is too tiny to properly change herself but nat is the best papa ever𓈒 he always makes sure she feels comfortable and makes lightning quick work of it , praising his baby when she 's all done𓈒 he 'll kiss away her tears , letting her know how proud he is of her𓈒

nat who always knows just how to soothe lottie𓈒 whether it 's through providing skin to skin contact , a hand to squeeze when she 's overwhelmed , soothing words , or a warm bottle he 's somehow always perfectly in tune with his fawn𓈒

girl dad ! nat is always bragging to his friends (especially van) about his precious girl𓈒 if van tries to poke fun even light heartedly he 'll fix him with a glare𓈒 he 's such a soft dad although he tries to present himself with a tough exterior𓈒

lottie loooves bambi ! being autistic she prefers to simply watch bambi over and over rather than watch a new film she might not like𓈒 although nat 's seen it about a billion times with her he always tries to act engaged , pointing to bambi and asking lottie questions , pointing out the similarities between him and nat 's own little fawn𓈒 this always delights lottie who watches the film with wide eager eyes each time despite knowing each scene by heart𓈒

nat is always making sure his baby gets enough outside time ! he 'll roll a soccer ball back and forth with her in the matthews ' sprawling backyard or read her a story under a tree𓈒 nat loves to go hiking and although lottie is too small to hike herself , sometimes he 'll take her to the edge of the forest𓈒 "just like bambi , huh lot ?" he 'll point out all the various animal tracks to her which lottie thinks is just about the coolest thing ever𓈒

so im watching breaking bad for the first time

i've just started season 3, for reference. i didn't think i would binge this much so fast but i've been sick all weekend with little else to do u_u

i didn't know anything about the show except for the basic premise, and that certain demographics revere walter white as this Cool, Morally Complex, Badass Aspirational Character (and inversely, that skyler is an Annoying, Nagging Wife) - so i thought there would be a slow and gradual descent into darkness.

i was genuinely so surprised to learn that walter is sympathetic for maybe a whole two or three episodes before it becomes so so clear that he just wants to do crimes as an enrichment outlet and then die before he can experience any of the quencies. that he was fully buying into the idea of making this Big Sacrifice for his family and going out in a blaze of glory. like, he could have solved All Of His Problems by swallowing his pride and toxic masculinity for two seconds in episode 4!!!! but NO!!!!! he would rather go down a maelstrom of destruction and tear his family apart with lies and worry and when he learns that he WILL live to see the Quencies... oh boy!!!! oh boy!!!!!!!

incredible writing i'm enjoying it immensely. my poor friends have to witness my constant liveblogging of "AHH HE SUCKS SO MUCHHHHHH" "WHAT A HYPOCRITE!!!!!!!!! WALTER GET OVER YOURSELF" and "MAYBE YOU SHOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF THAT BEFORE YOU LIED TO YOUR FAMILY FOR MONTHS AND MONTHS!!!!!" and of course the occasional "pizza on roof hehe"

he's had a couple of Badass Moments (tm) so far (i liked it when he sploded the rich guy's car), but so far in the show he's such a pathetic, angry man taking his frustrations out on everyone around him. i can only assume the people thinking he's aspirational have bought into the narrative walter is selling (badly, might i add. his speeches suck so much. he's just constantly trying to justify the damages he's done to himself). he is Good at maybe one or two things but so clueless at everything else!!!!!

skyler's only crime is being a suburban white mom, she's being wayyy more patient and reasonable than anyone else would be in this situation holy shit. i am absolutely watching this show from a pro skyler and pro jesse perspective. i want good things for them!!!!! i want them to catch a break!!!!!!!!! unfortunately. the maelstrom of destruction

i also thought i knew what i was in for when i started the show but then there was the Meat Goop. that was so absolutely revolting

do you have any tips on drawing backgrounds. I struggle with them so much and can’t always make them cohesive with the drawing yk

Oh man, yeah. I do indeed know, all too well U_U Backgrounds are a STRUGGLE

Here are some things I’ve picked up, that have helped make them a little less difficult (feel free to take what you think might be helpful and then scrap the rest!):

1. Map out your Composition, Tones and Colors in a Rough Thumbnail

-I think the main thing that helps me, is planning. If you’re gonna do a background, don’t think of it as an after thought. I find it’s helpful to plan out the background at the same time you’re planning the character pose, rather that just slapping in a background, once the character is already finished. It’s like a little dance, making the environment work to accommodate the character while simultaneously making the character work to accommodate the BG.

-I usually do a small thumbnail and color key before I actually go into the drawing itself

-I like to think of the thumbnail like a little roadmap that I can always refer back to when I’m stuck. It's something that is easy to experiment with and will help me keep the big picture in mind, while working, rather than fussing over all of the small details.

-you can plan how you might want to use light and other elements of the bg to frame important things, or point and lead your eye to the focal point, or divide up the frame.

When I’m working on the actual drawing, I’ll always keep my thumbnail visible off in the corner of my workspace, just as a reminder of where I want to go with the piece, and to keep it available to color pick from, when I want to.

2. Try Sticking to 1 or 2 Dominant Colors and try not to stray too far, unless it’s an intentional accent

I usually choose 1-2 main colors and then paint bucket fill the canvas with those colors as a base, before I even start on the "cleaned up" linework. Then when I start painting, for real, I choose my colors based off how warm or cold they are, compared to the main color(s).

So say, for example, I want the dominating color of the illustration to be red, if I’m coloring an apple (that is naturally red) I would keep it the same hue, but might change the tone or saturation. However, if I’m painting a carrot (that would naturally be orange) I might just shift the hue to be a warmer red, rather than a full blown orange. Conversely, if I wanted to paint a naturally blue sky, I would shift the hue from red to be a bit colder, maybe more of a purple, but not necessarily a true blue.

*sometimes the saturation can mess around with a perceived color as well, (like how a desaturated yellow, will often look green), so I find there’s a lot of trial and error and messing around to be done with color, which I guess is half of the fun :P

(obviously this isn’t the only way to approach color, but I find it helpful for reigning myself in and keeping things a little more cohesive)

3. Add Depth

-Think of your environment as a 3D space with overlapping elements. Consider what your foreground, midground and background elements might be, to give depth to the drawing.

The further away something is, the less details the human eye can make out, and atmosphere will create a sort of hazy look to things that are set far away. So to mimic this effect for things that you want to recede into the distance, you can use less saturated colors, less contrast, do less detail, less line work (maybe even go lineless) and use slightly cooler colors. Maybe even add a little gaussian blur if it looks good. Conversely, for things you want push forward, just do the opposite (higher contrast, higher saturation, heavier line, more detail ect.)

4a. Study and Play with Lighting

I think lighting can be a big factor in helping make a character feel like they fit and belong in their environment. Study how light works and interacts with the world and think about how it might effect every element of your environment. How does it break apart when it’s going through something translucent? Is it going to cast harsh or soft shadows? Are there multiple light sources? Are they different colors? different intensities? Is the light source visible or not? Is it a controlled beam of light, like a laser, or more open, like the sun?

4b. Make use of Reflected Light and Color

So, when light hits an object, that is near another object, some of it’s color can be reflected onto the nearby object, if the angle is right. So for reflected light, I usually add a clipping mask layer to the affected object and add a gradient coming from the first object, using a color that has be color picked from the first object. Then I’ll turn down the opacity to my liking.

^(Ok, this first example of reflected light is super subtle on Sirius’s jacket, but it’s a little clearer to see the reflected light from the tub reflecting onto Sirius’s face and Remus’s arms, in the second example)

5. Add a Little Bit of *Spice*

If by the end of my coloring, I still want to do some tweaking, these are my general go to’s:

-Edit with filters and/or gradients. If you’re working digitally, play around with blending modes. You can make a new layer, fill it with a color or a gradient, then see what different blending modes and levels of opacities will do to it.

-Color your lines so that the black isn’t so harsh against the other colors in the scene. Sometimes I like to go completely lineless in some areas, if it's an area blown out by light, or is maybe pulling your attention away from the focal point

-You could add a little bit of grain and noise (to do this in photoshop, make a new layer, fill it with a grey colour (or experiment with other colours) then go to filter>noise>add noise>ok and turndown the fill and maybe change the blending mode)

-Adjust the levels, if you’re still not fully satisfied with the contrast, you can adjust the levels (ctrl +L in photoshop)

-Adjust the Color balance if you're not fully satisfied with the saturation and colors (ctrl+ B in photoshop)  

Ok, gosh, there’s so much, but I think I’ve rambled on long enough… hope this helps and wasn't too obvious or convoluted!

Wolves are extinct in England but we do have them in America... though I'm not sure if we had them between 1910 - 1950, when DOTC takes place.

Anyway, big dream thing again where all the leaders are called together so StarClan can hand them the plot again. This moment stands out;

This is building up to how he needs a wife though, btw. Star Flower is a reward for being good now, so he'll have "someone to care for him" and defend him against the horrible ordeal of People Being Mad At Him. She is an object for Clear Sky's narrative.

As cathartic as it is that finally, someone's mad at him, you're supposed to feel bad that they're being so harsh. To the dictator. Who got more than half of the dead cats in this dream killed.

I'm not being hyperbolic about the wife-thing btw. That's just what's written.

Spoiler alert for the rest of the book: He tries to control his family again and they say no, because what he's supposed to do is find contentedness in Star Flower. His new wife. She becomes a Clear Sky Stan and acts as a writer mouthpiece for how cool and strong he is.

And THAT. THAT is why they were always going to waste Star Flower. They aren't telling a story about how Clear Sky is just like One Eye, and that he effectively got out-dictator'd by a bigger boot, and that he has to reflect on that. No, they're playing this completely straight, One Eye was a point of reference. He's what ""EVIL"" is supposed to look like, to contrast Clear Sky, who was NOT evil.

So they don't think there COULD BE a person who encourages his worse instincts, the way the fandom wants Star Flower to do. He doesn't HAVE worse instincts, his ""abuse"" was just love misapplied. Or, more accurately, it can't be abuse if it was based in real love.

Star Flower is not a person. She is a sexy lamp for Clear Sky to win.

hiii your art is so delicious!!! im sorry if youve answered this already but what references do you use for clothing? all of the clothing you draw looks so detailed and accurate. could you give some pointers?

hello I procrastinated answering this bc I don’t feel like I have a very good one but I will try! I am assuming this means accurate as in fabric draping and such and not “historically accurate” bc the clothes I draw are definitely not historically accurate….

basically… scour for references. when you’re making up an outfit it’s very difficult to accurately imagine the way fabric drapes (at least for me) so most of the clothing I draw is a patchwork of several different references. not necessarily even good references. sometimes a cheap modern blouse has the right flowy sleeves and the correct angle of an arm to copy the folds for a completely different garment. look for images with similar fabric weights and textures and frankenstein them together and you can convincingly lay out folds and drapes for a nonexistent piece of clothing.

How I feel about this character: I've always liked her but she's definitely grown on me in the past 5-6 years. In my top 10 now for sure. I love her role in the lore and her designs are fantastic (PCB dress will always be the best though sorry) and her aesthetic is flawless and she's cool and scary and funny and gross. Absolutely an icon of the franchise

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Any Yukari ship can potentially pick my interest if it's done a certain way tbh... But my big ones are with Okina (and poly sages depending on how Kasen's written) and Reimu. I also still like her with Yuyuko a little bit but more as exes who don't get back together, with Akyuu and her past selves in a non-commited weird situationship, and I think it's entertaining to imagine her with the more powerful/important characters in general because I just like when strong women flirt with each other u_u

My favorite platonic relationship for this character: With the Hakurei shrine maidens!! Yes all of them. So Reimu and whoever the previous ones were... I like to add Labelko from DiPP but that's just me :> Overall her relationship with them is so fascinating to me, the symbolism and all the little details etc. I think I'd suck at explaining it with words though so one day I'll just have to draw my ideas lol

Things done in fanworks that annoy me: The old "jokes" from last decade aside (cuz I'll always dislike those anyway), I hate it when she's portrayed as a motherly figure... Like are we talking about the same character?? 😩

Things I look for in fanworks: There's already plenty of fanworks with the kind of stuff I like (the scheming/shady plans, backstory fanworks with her role as a sage and/or Merry theories etc), but I'd love to see more introspective stories on her relationship with the shrine maidens, maybe even some on the horror side, and also more references to literature and especially japanese classics... I love those and they fit her character well

A headcanon: She reads a lot of poetry and learns some of it as a way to train her (big and old) memory. You'd have to be really good to win a round of karuta against her.

There are a number of things in Crimson Shroud I was kind of iffy about that put me off playing it, but now that I am I actually find I'm liking it quite a bit. The writing, art, and music are all very moody in a way that's familiar to me (Yasumi Matsuno + Basiscape, you know how it is lol, plus I think the guy who did the art took notes from Akihiko Yoshida) and while I originally found the tabletop aesthetic to be off-putting (your guys are always represented by little tabletop figurines, and dice that you physically roll with the stylus are a big part of the mechanics) over time it's really really growing on me. I think it's kinda cute ngl.

I feel like this is the type of game I would've been obsessed with if it had come out in the early 2000s and I'd played it then. Really weird, very stylistic, thick with lore for a relatively short game, not very well known, moody tone... Like it brings Summoner to mind, actually, which was a flop of an RPG that came out in the early 2000s that was also openly and heavily inspired by Dungeons & Dragons, but also I have a lot of fond memories of it lol. And that game was also very moody

Also you can totally tell this was intended to be a sequel to Vagrant Story originally, it wears its spiritual predecessor on its sleeve. It really feels like a journey through Lea Monde abstracted through figurines, dice, and dungeon maps. This might be heretical to say... but I'm kinda... enjoying it more than I was Vagrant Story, LMAO. I think for two reasons: 1. turn-based combat is more familiar to me, so I'm adapting to Crimson Shroud's mechanical depth much more quickly, and 2. the major female character in this game, Frea, is actually playable, and is your party's linchpin. Will always be lamenting Callo Merlose's demotion to NPC in vanilla Vagrant Story for game memory reasons u_u

The main dude is also growing on me unfortunately. "Giauque," the stupidest possible version of "Jack." I had my hackles up when he internally referred to Frea as a she-dog early on (shortly after she was revealed to be a member of an oppressed fantasy ethnic group, which like. I don't even want to get into all that shit right now, but it's the other reason I was put off by this game) but over time I think it's clear that was just a very poor way of demonstrating their usual dynamic, which is that he took Frea under his wing and likes her quite a bit, but portrays himself as a gruff, amoral lout, so he prefers to bicker instead of be effusive. The implication is that they're a bit like each other IMO, both too sharp-tongued for their own good

I also know a ton of spoilers so I'm paying lots of attention to Frea in the frame story... We'll have to see how it's handled, but I do like that the main antagonist of this game is a woman. So few games feature a woman as the primary villain, and even if they do, they find ways to blunt her impact (like Ultima in FFT, she's resurrected at the ass end of the story and then Ramza & co. kill her immediately), so I'm curious to see where Crimson Shroud will go with Abigail (an insane name for a villainess in a dark fantasy piece btw)

BASICALLY I think if CS was a fifty-hour game I might find it more exhausting, but since it barely hits twenty if you're taking your time, I'm a lot more invigorated by it. The short runtime works in its favor IMO.

Hello friend! Of course! I always recommend this video by SurelySims because it was honestly such a good refresher after being away from Blender for a bit. It’s about an hour or so but it’s broken down into segments. There’s everything in there from basics, utilizing SimRipper, posing with two sims, using accessories as well as discusses how to utilize Vyxated’s rig. I personally like to use Vyxated’s rig because for some reason ea’s default rig is a bit wonky for me. Aside from tutorials, I look at a lot of references, I’ll usually have a tablet or my phone with a picture I can look at especially for hands or expressions. Even artists uploading quick sketches of pose anatomy practice helps me put together little details I missed. I like to pose at the base then work my way to the face however! If it’s just a headshot, I’ll only pose what’s in the frame. Lastly, I think the more that goes into adjusting each necessary joint can add further depth to a pose. For example, just barely adjusting the hip can add character from someone standing in a default position or curving the shoulders forward for someone who might be a bit timid!
