I love the Atbash Cipher.
I would go to War for the Atbash Cipher.
I would Marry the Atbash Cipher, and when the Atbash Cipher is laid to rest in an early grave, I would sit by its grave every day, even as I found new love and moved on with my life, because there will always be room in my heart for the Atbash Cipher.
So if I ever here you talking Shit about the Atbash Cipher again, I am going to take my Cipher and ram it up your ATBASH.

hi you are The falseapparatus guy in my brain SO im bringing the news of !! new upload !! :D
also, do you perhaps happen 2 have any leads on the encoded text in the description of Dead Ringer? i've tried caesar + atbash and such but it looks much more like vigenere or some other cipher that needs a key and i have no clue what that might be </3
-falseanon i think i'll be getting back here 👀
if you mean this one!! its a youtube link!! https://youtu.be/g_qn-dwmd8A i found it a while agoo but i wasnt able to decode the morse code :( idk how to do that
#falseapparatus#ALSO IM SO HAPPY TO BE THE FALSEAPPARATUS GUYYY I LOVE THEMMMMM i havent watched the new vid rahhh#i need to draw them again too i had an animatic idea for the pookies

Sigil of Baphomet
These symbols are actually the Hebrew letters which spell out the word Leviathan (לויתן).
The Atbash cipher is a simple substitution cipher where each letter is replaced by its reverse counterpart in the alphabet (A becomes Z, B becomes Y, and so on). For example, "hello" becomes "svool".

I've been trying to solve 'HGZ TG NZN TL QMCN GVTG' for like 2,5 hours and I'M LOSING MY MIND
I've tried every possible Caesar Cipher, and Atbash Cipher, combining them, and trying all of that with the reversed text, but NOTHING WORKS
My current guess is a monoalphabetic substitution cipher? But those are hand to crack since there's, y'know, 26! possibilities (aka approx. 403 SEPTILLION (403 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000) possibilities)
Well. Okay in all honesty there's only a small portion of those that fit. The 'NZN' and 'GVTG' having repeating letters helps a lot (the former likely being a word such as eye, lol, huh, wow, yay, pop, etc., and the latter something like that, area, aura, prop, pulp, etc.)
Anywho, I'm. Uhm. Gonna take a break
ACK IM SORRY IT WAS 4AM AND I STAYED UP WAY TOO LATE FOR THIS LAST NIGHT SO I JUST FELL ASLEEP
thank you for ur wonderful service ill do my best
update: its been 15 minutes i dont know what im doing if its not any of the three you say its not what could it possibly be......
i tried substitution matching and got "YOU GO NOW TO SOME AREA" which sounds wrong
do you think it could be some sort of red herring? like we spend so much time on it but it isnt actually a cipher and just gibberish?
edit: NEVER MIND I SAW WHAT YOU GOT YALL ARE SO SMART

Please... please I need to know how to decipher the message.... pleaseeeeeee
Ough this chapter was really good I enjoyed it a lot!!! I enjoy your writing style a lot and I Love how you write Ford. It feels a bit more canon compliant than how people usually write him and while I love how people write him and explore his character in general its really nice to read something that I feel is closer to his canon character. I look forward to the next chapter! Make sure you're taking care of yourself :]
(follow up): "okay I finally remembered the name of the atbash cipher and was able to decode it so I retract my pleading apologies. its honestly so adorable to me oughhhh
Again, I loved the new chapter and cannot wait for the next one!"
💜💜 AHHH thank you! telling me i write in character is probably one of the greatest compliments i can receive ahaha, i am always worried about it somehow.
and no need for apologies, i am literally hopeless when it comes ti ciphers. break the code is my lifesaver (for this fic and otherwise)

look its simple. i have 3,970 memories from 2013-2016 written down but they’re all in atbash cipher. before reading them i basically have like no memories from that time. as i decipher them i can read them and recall my own life but if i see my reflection or hear my current voice at any point during this time i forget everything again. and if i read too much at once without taking a break to do something else i get really disoriented and confused and struggle to tell what’s real and forget what’s happened in the past 8ish years. regardless of what happens during, after i’m done i forget like 90% of what i just remembered. like i said. simple.

i already know what the story behind the picture is but please explain it anyway we need to educate the masses
oh my god thank you for enabling me ive been thinking about this all day. regarding this post i made yesterday and this classic image (which i actually just found out was posted seven years ago today!)

basically as can be read in the post at BigFest in 2016 somebody had what i believe was a fan-made prop based on the laptop from season 2 of gravity falls. alex hirsch attended this convention and decided to type in the password to the laptop. we never learned the password in the show so lots of people were excited to find out!
a HUGE thing to note here is that journal 3 was still months away from releasing and in fact while a couple pages had been released as promotional material it was still being worked on until, like... gosh i wanna say may is when they finally started printing it? don't quote me on that though my point is that this was all taking place pre-journal 3 and, therefore, many fans were still operating under the (sensible) impression that the laptop which
had been designed by fiddleford
had been built by fiddleford
had fiddleford's name on it
said "PROPERTY OF F" on it (at this point it had been established through promo images that "F" referred to fiddleford)
was assumed to be fiddleford's by, like, four different main characters
was given to and used by fiddleford following s2e7
fiddleford presumably knew the password to
would also belong to fiddleford. right? i mean logically. logically, guys.
so when alex hirsch revealed that the password had been "STANFORD" all along, people thought that was a little bit... well
of course, a couple months later journal 3 would be published and it would say that the laptop had actually been STANFORD'S, not fiddleford's, and that he had made the password his own name. so technically i lied in my earlier post, there IS a heterosexual explanation for this, but imo it's still bullshit. like sorry i don't believe for a fucking second that stanford "i need to encode all of my messages in multiple ciphers and write in invisible ink" pines would ever make a password as simple as his own name. he wouldve picked like something with six different layers of alternate meanings and also put it through atbash at the VERY least. also as i listed above there is a LOT of evidence which would support the laptop belonging to fiddleford, as opposed to ford, which has this random retcon (and like... some of the computer keys are different colors? i guess?? idk that bit was stupid) as its only supporting evidence.
my theory is that, while writing the show, alex and the other writers had intended for the laptop to belong to fiddleford, but for whatever reason, when they were writing the book, they decided to make it ford's instead. i want to make clear that i DON'T think this swap was motivated by homophobia, or as a reaction to seeing people interpret the password in a gay way. by the time that this photo was taken several promotional journal pages had been released, so it's safe to say that even if they were still adding the finishing touches to the book, it was pretty much in its final stage and in fact might have already started printing (i think the first photos we see of the book itself were posted like a week or two after bigfest). so to assume that there's a correlation there is both unfounded and extremely unlikely.
now, the stargazing scene reprint, on the other hand
#long post#gravity falls#fiddauthor#<- why the fuck not. it's midnight no one can judge me#why are you as a man making your computer password the name of the man you live alone in the woods with#sorry anon i doubt think this is what you had in mind when you said “explain it” LMAO#tales of the wild zeep#uhhh a couple other notes#1. i do not know who made the laptop prop at bigfest. i assumed it was a fan but i wasn't there i really don't know#2. i said may is when they started printing the book but i have literally no source for that#it is a guess based on when promotional photos were being posted#3. i say “fiddleford presumably knew the password to [the laptop]” and i just wanted to explain my reasoning there#basically in s2e10 fiddleford says that he “fixed” the laptop and is shown using it#we also see it at the start of the following episode being used to monitor the activity of the portal#now. i am not a computer engineer. i am mediocre with computers at best.#but based on what i have been told. when you are faced with a password screen. there are two ways to proceed#one way is to reset the computer's hard drive entirely‚ to... “erase its memory” if you will#however this would result in one being unable to access any of the information which had previously been stored there#considering that we see fiddleford using the laptop to monitor the portal's activity i believe that its files must have been intact#so we can rule out resetting as an option#the other way to proceed is by. um. knowing the password. and entering it#so THAT'S why i say that he PRESUMABLY knew the password.#now it's entirely possible that he was able to hack into the laptop or something. he is a mechanical genius and he built it after all#i'm just saying that i think it's far more likely that he just. knew the password.#which is honestly really funny and still kind of gay if you believe the whole “the laptop was actually ford's” thing#why are you as a man telling your computer password to the man you live alone in the woods with when you wont even write it in your diary#fucking apologies for this OCEAN of tags. ive done taxes all day im an adult im allowed to infodump about old hyperfixations as a treat

it's understandable that the playfair cipher isn't used in gravity falls because it's a fucking stupid cipher and there are variants of it that alter which direction letters are shifted, but! I think if they did use it they could feed the audience the key grid in a few different ways, including but not limited to 1) have it just be the standard abcs, though this still leaves room for error as to which letter is excluded, 2) have a piece of text with letters highlighted/capitalized/otherwise marked that, in order, would correctly fill in the grid, or 3) if you really hate your viewers. you could do something similar to the cipher used in the shorts-
where you're given sets of two numbers (eg 1-12, 9-24, etc), with the first number corresponding to an episode number, and then second number corresponding to the placement of a letter in that episodes end cipher. you could theoretically use this method to give your viewers all the letters in the grid. i think for this you could try presenting your "coordinates" in a 5x5 grid, both to hint at the grids use in the cipher (and thus narrowing down which ciphers it could be), and to prevent confusion about what order the grid is meant to be filled in.
however, i suspect part of the reason this cipher wasn't used, on top of "idk how well known it even is" and "its a frustrating cipher that children would have difficulty with", is that it's a cipher that's REALLY fucking difficult to brute force.
the other ciphers used are Caesar cipher, a1z26 cipher, atbash, combination, a few symbol ciphers, and vigenere. all but the last one is a simple substitution cipher, and is thus easy enough to solve. the vigenere cipher is far more difficult, but even without knowing the key, you can in many cases crack it the way you do most ciphers- analyzing word length, spotting patterns, and making some educated guesses.
this strategy isn't possible (or, at least, it's really fucking inefficient) with playfair, due to its bigram swag. i havent had the opportunity to decipher one of these bad boys myself, especially not without a grid, but it would have to be super fucking difficult. you could, maybe, work off of the frequency of letter pairs, but oh my god i need to go to bed

Dream Game Challenge... Nancy Drew: Dead on Target

for @nancydrewnetwork ‘s Dream Game Challenge!
Plot Synopsis:
Just nicely home from her latest adventure Nancy receives a phone call from the enigmatic Gray Man, the leader of the shadowy Network. The Gray Man informs her that both of the Hardy Boys have been hospitalized due to a car bomb planted in their vehicle. An information leak is suspected at the Network and as such the Gray Man would like Nancy to investigate the incident in Bayport and bring the culprits to justice!
Characters:
Brian Conrad: Voted most likely to need a good lawyer, Brian Conrad is a bully that has been hassling the Hardy’s since grade school. Rich and snooty Brian is irked by the Hardy’s because of all the positive attention they get… could he do something to try and ruin their squeaky-clean appearance, after all he was at the First National Bank at the time of the bombing (because Brian Conrad is always there).
Callie Shaw: Born and raised in the farm land just outside of Bayport, Callie Shaw has just recently moved into town with her cousin. An intelligent young woman, Callie works at the First National Bank. Still gaining friends, Callie is fond of the Hardy’s since they are some of the only people in town that ‘speak’ her first language: American Sign Language. Callie doesn’t let her lack of hearing stop her from living life to the fullest and rumour is that she may have a crush on a certain tall, dark, and handsome Hardy!
Oscar Smuff: Oscar Smuff dreams big of being a police detective one day. Unfortunately, he has not yet been able to pass the training; however, he hopes that working as a security guard for the First National Bank will give him the experiences he needs to be successful. He was the first responder to the car bomb and hopes that how he acted will help him when he next applies for the police force.
Chet Morton: The Hardy Boys best friend, confidant, and often co-conspirator, Chet Morton is one of the few civilian people who knows that the Hardy’s are spies! Chet’s passions in life are his hobbies and his Queen, a bright yellow jalopy that he fixes enthusiastically if not effectively. Despite being a star football player and power lifter, Chet still often gets bullied by Brian Conrad.
Iola Morton: Iola Morton is the younger sister of Chet and Joe Hardy’s long time (and according to Frank long suffering) girlfriend. Currently Iola is working as a barista at the Meet Locker, saving enough money to fulfill her passion and study Chemistry at MIT when she graduates high school. More introverted than her brother, she has recently been taken under the wing of Callie Shaw and the two are becoming fast friends.
Dr. Carrini: Dr. Carrini is flagged by the Network as a possible agent of the terrorist group the Assassins. Suspicion was raised when he was tangentially tied to a series of missing children cases a decade previously, but nothing could be proven. Currently his is working in Our Lady of Mercy Hospital… is it possible he planted the bomb so that he may have the Hardy brothers under his care, or under his knife?
Ripley Lansing: Another person of interest flagged by the Network, Ripley was found to be blackmailing and threatening contestants on a reality TV show where the Hardys had gone undercover. Money and an influential mother meant that she didn’t serve any jail time; however, her public image was ruined. She knew Frank and Joe as Frank Dooley and Joe Carr, respectively, and now that she is here in Bayport she might be seeking revenge having realized they were the ones who ratted her out to the police.
Fenton Hardy: Fenton Hardy is an ex-NYPD detective and the Hardy Boys father. After his retirement from the NYPD Fenton co-founded the Network (formerly American Teens Against Crime) with the mysterious Gray Man. Currently, Fenton keeps his work for the Network secret by working as a private detective. As is obvious, when it comes to detective work, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!
Laura Hardy: Laura Hardy is Frank and Joe’s mother and the heart of the Hardy family. However, Laura doesn’t just use her heart, with a doctorate in Library Sciences Laura is currently working at the Phillip J. Roscoe Community College as their head research librarian. She doesn’t explicitly know about the Network but with her eye for detail it is unlikely that she doesn’t suspect something about what her sons are up to!
Frank & Joe Hardy: Nancy’s long time friend and teen detective contemporaries. They are currently under hospital orders due to being injured in a car bombing. Smart and intelligent the brothers are no strangers to injury but this seems like something more. Just like it would be for Nancy, narrowing down the suspect list for this crime is going to be challenging…
Spud: Chet Morton’s pooch Spud is a very good boy, well most of the time… Spud tends to follow his nose which makes him an excellent tracker although he has ended up in the Morton trash can one too many times.
Phone Friends:

Bess Marvin & George Fayne: Bess is in the process of fixing up her car for the winter. She is getting George’s help although this time it is George who is on the back foot and keeps messing stuff up for Bess.
Ned Nickerson: Since the game takes place at the beginning of December Ned is studying like crazy for his final exams. Being only three hours away from Bayport at Emerson, Ned is constantly debating about putting down the books and visiting his injured friends and Nancy in Bayport.
Vijay Patel: The Network’s tech guy, Vijay is the Q to Frank and Joe’s James Bond. Recruited by the Network when he was 17 he has built a lot of the infrastructure that the Network uses and is upset that a mole may have penetrated his system. An affable young man, Vijay is fond of the Hardys and is willing to do anything within his power to help Nancy find the culprit.
Locations:
First National Bank:
The location of the bombing. One of the oldest remaining buildings in Bayport. It is rumoured that there are tunnels and secret passages throughout the building, the remnants of a meticulously planned 1832 bank robbery.
Phillip J. Roscoe Community College: A school where there can be big fish in a little pond. Most Bayport students make the leap to the larger pond of New York to peruse their post-secondary needs; however, the Phillip J. Roscoe Community College is carving a name out for itself as an excellent research institution.
Our Lady of Mercy Hospital: The hospital where the Hardy’s are currently being housed. It is shiny and clean, smelling of carbolic cleaning agents, like almost every hospital in the world. What is not like most other hospitals is that it was converted from a school into a hospital during WWII since Bayport was one of the first ports when coming back across the Atlantic. Quickly refurbished, there are strange dead end hallways and the possibility of a room long since forgotten being every wall.
The Meet Locker: A great little coffee shop with a really dumb name, according to the local teenagers. Often just referred to as the Locker, the Meet Locker, is a regular hangout for local teens with its comfy seats, highly caffeinated products, and cheap prices!
The Hardy Forensics Lab: Located in the barn in the Hardy’s backyard, the forensics lab is used equally by the Hardy Boys and Fenton Hardy in their respective cases. Stocked with forensic tools bought second hand from various police stations around the country, the Hardy’s have enough tech to make the Gil Grissoms and Horatio Caines of the world jealous.

If it'd been put through a cipher where the letters are fixed in place to a single character (i.e. caesar, atbash, a1z26), the translation of the runes to our alphabet would still just be plaintext, because those kinds of codes act the exact same way as just using different characters (like Ford and Bill's codes in J3) does. If this sample is an exception, and it has gone through another cipher, it'll be found out pretty quickly when the bob comes out and everything else appears to be in two codes in comparison.
It would be very interesting if it was in something like a trifid or square cipher, where each plaintext letter is assigned a combination of characters based on its place on a grid, like this:

(my journal got a lil wet ^^' it says "to shuffle")
In the sample we were given, there are 16 characters; enough for a square cipher but not a trifid. Of course, there's also the unlikely possibility that the plaintext was run through an 8- or 16-sided grid, but that's so completely unlikely, based on readability and printability issues, that it'll be my personal absolute last resort.
Then again, they haven't really done very much with grid ciphers in the past, if anything at all, so I wonder how likely this theory is. It would be so awesome though
Edit: I FORGOT TO MENTION DATE CIPHERS OMG
So a date cipher is like a caesar except the rule changes with each letter! The key is a date, such as 12/26/24 (in american), and it could go either forward or backward.
To illustrate, the plaintext applied to the aforementioned date will be "Bill Cipher."

This is also really unlikely, since the line of code we got was from a social media post, but it would be hella fun frustrating
GF FANDOM, ALL HANDS ON DECK ! WHAT CODE IS THIS AND WHAT DOES IT TRANSLATE TO?? OREGON PARKS TWEETED AN IMAGE WITH THESE SYMBOLS HIDDEN IN IT, GO ⚠️⚠️
#regarding the last statement: i still haven't watched fordtato's video about decoding j3#i wanna try to do it myself ^^'
