I've drawn Marcille with the idea of her being a deer/elk as a chimera, that's also based off of her dungeon lord outfit, but then a goat appealed to me and it makes a LOT more sense. An animal often sacrificed, but could also be the one who is sacrificed to. In a way Marcille used herself as a goat reviving Falin, and yada yada-- I think this is going somewhere. Mithrun would go apeshit, no doubt. But I love doomed yuri, love it a bunch, so a pheonix is such an interesting choice because I already have a sad little intricate plot in my head with it in mind

A really old and really silly sketch, but I found bells on the types of animals who are known to be quiet are a fitting design

The goat one is quite literally the deer draft but with meaner horns and coined pupils. Both were based off of her dungeon lord outfit since: fluffy. But bruh?? I don't have creativity stores-- all depleted. Gone. Ate it all the night I came home with wrapping paper and a sword gilded sword(with sword prints ON the prints)

Now I got a WHOLE doc just for this one; see that flying serpent right in the corner? Took the multi wings and tail frizzle(it doesn't have that, but I didn't want to add a pair of pings on a tail) right from it. I had THOUGHTS and IDEAS

basic idea: she's got a LOT of new stuff only to be hindered by it because her body is NOT built to do the things it does. Her human half is still as flammable as it can get, which would be "compensated" by Phoenixes defining trait: resurrection Plays WELL with how destructive Marcille is, both to herself and foes And here are weeks OLD doodles that have marinated in my brain juice

if you saw the episode regarding senshi’s backstory… you’ll understand why this quote fits. at a young age, he watched his entire party die from starvation. consequently, he studies cooking (with monsters) with a crazy intensity to starve off hunger. to never have more drops of blood join him again—especially with his suspicion that he ate his own party members. so in the case of senshi, others blood is genuinely (or believed to be) Apart Of Him

(tldr senshi’s survivors guilt goes CRAZY)

we all know that despite chilchuck’s professionalism (emotional distance) he isn’t as hardened off as he wants us to believe but i feel the episode that encapsulates that is when that one ogre confronts him like. “you’re worried your friends will die aren’t you” while he’s sobbing his eyes out. THAT sticks out to me.

if you ignore that episode, there’s still tons of moments from the season alone that showcases how much he cares. chilchuck trying to wake up marcille from her nightmares. deciding between following senshi or laois to protect them from other people’s wraths. facing the red dragon HEAD ON despite him Not Being A Fighter. he cares about people DAMMIT but he’s the last person to let others know, covering any harsh actions with his words—be it teasing marcille, snarking at laois, or more. yet his actions say more than what he could & that is enough

itzusumi

maybe this is what being a mortal is about. kindnesses that aren’t deserved

this resonates as itzusumi because of her inherent selfishness. even though she’s only appeared at the latter half, throughout the series, she’s been shown to prioritize herself above all. and that isn’t to say she isn’t deserving of kindness as one of her rights as a Basic Human Being but. people tend to follow the golden rule from my experience—ESPECIALLY when the other party has been rude (which itzusumi has been)

so to have laois’ party treat her with kindness (with chilchuck literally APOLOGIZING for his comments) is really heartwarming. most people would have given up or left her by now. yet his crew treats her with kindness even if she hasn’t been the best. that’s why i feel the kindness is undeserved

as for what a mortal is… that’s a question all the characters are finding out, but itzusumi (& falin) are finding out above all. as beastmen, they aren’t seen (or even seen THEMSELVES) as human. yet they are both being treated with kindness despite their actions. and i think that sticks out to me above all

falin’s transformation to a literal chimera is kickstarted all because marcille refused to let the dead rest. although the dungeon can easily allow for the revival of humans… bringing back people when they’re too far gone, when they’re already devoured.. it crosses the life between life and death, the natural order of existence. yet marcille crosses that line, of what’s considered natural or “fate” (aka what is determined by the higher order—heaven) of them parting and ripped it apart

she brought her best friend back to life.

because much like senshi, marcille is someone characterized by her losses & what she will continue to lose due to her being a long-lived species. she knows this and has been continued haunted by her past losses: her bird, her father, and i have no doubt there’s more. it’s why she studied forbidden magic: to no longer lose the people she loves. and she doesn’t care what boundaries or rules she breaks because she loves them That Much (sounds like another magic aligned user eh?)

how do you separate a tiger’s beauty from its ferocity? or a cheetah’s elegance from the speed of its attack? achilles was like that—the beauty and the terror were two sides of a single coin

we all know this is referring to falin in her chimera form because while i do love her prechimera the series mainly focuses on her in that form than without. although she is dangerous, she is powerful. and in the same way, so much as she’s powerful, she’s dangerous. her existence is beautiful but it’s an example of hostility. of the potential of forbidden magic as well as the drawbacks. she’s truly two sides of the same coins

“i think we sometimes make the mistake of thinking monsters are abhorrent aberrations, lurking in the darkest recesses, when the truth is far more distributing. the most monstrous of men are those who sit in plain sight, daring you to challenge them.”

this goes into manga spoilers so. if you’re not okay with that… skip this section

i wholeheartedly believe this quote fits laois due to his own negative experiences with humans. for YEARS the villagers of his home casted out falin (and him, to some degree? could be wrong) treating her poorly for who her ghost abilities. similarly, his parents struggled to stand up for them, leading lapis to have a strained relationship current day. and when he left to join the army, he struggled to fit in.

as a result, laois would dream of being a monster (and also developing a monster interest in general) for their power—especially when they could crush all the people that bullied them. his love for monsters represent laois disconnect to humans—especially with the way they treated the ones he loves. because despite the monsters being seen as the scary ones, he experiences more anxiety around humans than he ever does with beasts.

Hold on, this should be pretty easy to do some statistics on. We can't calculate standard deviations or quartiles here, so we can't provide a fully accurate spread of heights, but even using percentages this should be pretty obvious.

Chilchuck is 110% of average male halfling height (110/100).

Senshi is 103.7% of average male dwarf height (140/135).

Laios is 102.7% of average male human height (185/180).

Falin is 100% of average female human height (170/170).

Marcille is 106.6% of average female elf height (160/150) and 94.1% of average female human height (160/170).

Itzusumi is 88.2% of average female human height (150/170) although it's possible that being a chimera has affected her height.

So if anything, if all five were transformed into the same race, Chilchuck would be the tallest but Senshi should be second-tallest!

Does... does this implies that... Chilchuck is the tallest of them all...? If they were all haflings, it's oficial that yes. Now, look at me play my game.

Chilchuck is said to be tall for a hafling, and he is. The avarage would be 100 cms, and he's 110 Laios is a tallman, but he's also tall for his race (the average height is 180cm for men, he's 185).

Marcille is 160 (elves are 150 and tall men 170, so we good here, I'd say she's average too). Sehshi is 140, he's actually taller than the average for male dwarves (135). And Itzusumi is shorter than the avatage of female tallmen (170), being only 150.

So far, if they all changed to the same race at the same time, Itzusumi would always be the shortest, followed my marcille. Senshi and Laios should be around the same height since theyre both 5 cms taller than the avarage (I know that as haflings Laios is taller, maybe he keeps being taller than Senshi just because). And Chilchuck would be the tallest. He's 10 cms taller than the avarage of his race after all.

Might this useless information hunt you until the end of your days.

aaaa ty anon TwT i wish he had more lore hes basically just supposed to be me but dungeon meshi...

uhh sum lore not on his ref i feel like he was adopted and raised by a different race (species i guess? sense kobolds arent human) but idk which one, hes part of a dungeon research team and got tasked with floor 2 but he often goes up to the first floor to trade with villagers, and sometimes goes down in the deeper floors for materials/research/checking in on his other team-mates. outside of the research team he isnt apart of any parties and solo travels.

he is NOT a fighter he is not good at it, he has a pocket knife just in case but tries to avoid conflict as much as necessary. he observes monsters from afar or tries to befriend them (the cause for most of his deaths).

for more story related stuff down below keep in mind spoilers (also keep in mind that its been a while since i read the manga so i might misremember sum stuff)

so i feel like story wise hed meet the gang after falin is turned into a chimera but before itzusumi (i hate writing her name) becomes a part of the cast. at first they just trade ingredients but after a meal and hearing what happened to falin, he decides to join them, at least for a few floors. his main reasoning is that he wants to explore deeper down in the dungeon, and he wants to get in a bit of research on chimeras.

again, hes not a fighter so when it comes to combat he helps out the party by distracting the monster, using his charisma to swindle the party out of conflict, and helping with the cooking like usual.

when it comes to him and chilchuck tho, man thats definitely the part ive thought out the most. for the entirety of the story they just sort of mutually pine for the other, kirilu makes his feelings kind of obvious but he doesnt have much romantic experiences, so his gestures fall flat. as for chilchuck he starts out annoyed, grows a soft spot for him, and then in denial about the whole thing. i also feel like theyd fight a lot bc its funny to me 😭 theyd only get together post canon, kirilu can continue his research but also help out chilchuck with his shop

I think in Laios's design, he'd stick true to his desire to become far from human. So him being a sort of monster imposter fits really well in my head

For the question regarding how we would eat, I like thinking his human mouth kind of acts as like those second airways snakes have so they don't suffocate when they're swallowing down food. That said, he would still eat with his human mouth for smaller things, but could and would eat with his wyrm mouth.
