Benji smiled down at the oven, looking through the glass as he watched the cupcakes inside it just about finish baking. The little chime of the oven's timer brings a smile to the weretiger's face. He was familiar with cooking, yes, but never really dabbled in baking pastries before. Using a pair of Halloween themed oven mitts, Benji sets down the cake tray on the stove top. Benji's careful not to knock over any of the other trays of snacks he had made earlier in the day. Setting the cake tray in a satisfying place, Benji checks on his other birthday plans before his guest arrived.

He had invited his friend, Jack, for a scary movie marathon. The weretiger wasn't sure witch era of horror would have been best for the doctor, but Benji was determined to make his birthday special not just for himself, but for Jack as well. He had decided they could watch a couple of classics like "Night of the Living Dead" and "Frankenstein" before getting into more practical effects heavy movies like "The Fly", "Alien", and "The Thing". He had managed to finally decorate some Halloween inspired cupcakes and set them on the living room coffee table before hearing the knock at the door.

Walking towards it, Benji feigns concern and caution, trying to mimic the over the top acting done in a few of these horror movies. "H-Hello, who is it? Who's out there? Jack? Jack is that you?"

The 'we have one restaurant everyone goes to for "fine dining" but it's actually shit' and the 'turn off one wrong dirt road and feel the moment of fear as all of a sudden every house has a confederate flag and you know if you step on the wrong grass you're getting shot' the 'yes I know every single person in town, no I don't know anyone in town' the 'i met this one person by chance and we keep accidentally being in proximity of each other so I guess we're soulbound best friends now' the 'i slept with a man and now everyone is being very quiet not talking to me anymore' the 'yeah this hunter guy was pretty cool and OH he's apart of the kkk isn't he.' the shitty gas station at the edge of town that has some kind of strange mystical quality in the fluorescent lights and raccoons.

I *know* this town, I know where that gas station is and where that abandoned building everyone has a different story for is. It's so nostalgic and vivid

usually urban fantasy is in like Vegas or New York, it's somewhere big and bright that people can recognize; it's fun to see horror at home.

Thank you - little disclaimer though, and I know you didn’t mean it this way, but it’s not my trouble with the Joel fandom. There is such an environment of hostility that has been fostered here thanks to everything we’ve seen and experienced and it affects way more than just me. Other writers than me have gotten an atrocious amount of bullshit flung at them from these parasocial, hateful fucking cunts. Doxxing, harassment, etc. Nothing’s off the table, it seems. And that’s fucking scary.

And I know it affects you as a reader, too. I know it doesn’t feel good to come on here to have a good time and see all of this horseshit. I know it worries you and upsets you. For that, I’m really sorry.

I’m resilient and I’ve stuck a lot out, but I’m not made of stone. No concrete plans to close up shop, but it is something I roll around in my mind very often. I wonder at what point this crosses the line of just harmful and becomes straight up insanity instead, doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
