'its been a while bud,' you might be saying, 'whereve you been?'
Doing stuff. My life is busy as all hell lately, but hey at least i got a free neon yellow fitbit out of the deal. Ironically, yellow is one of my favourite colours and also one of the 2 (two) colours that i can't really see. Yes, I have tritanomaly. No, I don't understand how those two things can both be true, either.
Anyways it's Christmas in May, dear 4 followers that love these posts, so let's crack open a cold one for the boys and get right into it.
S2e4, Coach Santa:
-- why is Colin wearing a turkey hat? I thought that was an American Thanksgiving thing? (Edit: apparently people eat turkey on Xmas. I grew up so decolonized i asked my mom once why my friend Baz wore a t necklace when his name started with a B. Turns out it was a cross. All I know of Xmas comes from Santa depictions and Christmas themed tv show episodes lmao)
-- Isaac's Santa outfit is fucking Iconic
-- Keeley and the Diamond Dogs is such an underrated dynamic i love them so much
-- the immediate teamwork to put together the gift for Jamie is a cute little moment 🥰
-- the title callback to the weird claymation short thing is also a nice touch. Can you tell i love Xmas episodes bc i do. I'm also Jewish lol. And I love irony.
-- I keep forgetting Roy's sister is a surgeon. Also Sexy December 28th is hilarious, i really hope they stuck with it
-- what in the world is the Higgins kid doing with a surfboard in England???
-- the fact that nobody used to show up for Higgins Christmases until Ted showed up 🥰
-- the fact that Henry got his dad a dartboard, Ted's favourite thing to do with his own dad when he was Henry's age, hurts my heart
-- Everyone is wearing shoes indoors. Is that like. An English thing? Ted is too, is that also an American thing? I am. Horrified
-- 'this one is pre-cheekied' I love u Dani
-- Richard is like The French Stereotype and I love that for him lol
-- Roy is lactose intolerant and ate so much ice cream he shit his pants? Relatable king. Also his birthday was three weeks before christmas, making him a Sagittarius, for those so inclined to know
-- Dani and Zoreaux acting like they're gonna die in the trenches over a nerd gun war are such fucking nerds
-- how long, do y'all think, has Rebecca been doing this? I'd like to think it was a sneaky little tradition she hid from Rupert for years
-- 'theres two white people at the door and they're smiling' you go babe tell it like it is
-- look i get Keeley has long nails but pressing a doorbell with your whole palm is unhinged behaviour
-- 'let me fix my knee' *just fucking punches it into place* gotta say, Roy's getting more relatable by the minute. I too have fixed my janky knee by simply shoving it back into place
-- Keeley is wearing a crop top in December. Gotta love the commitment. Also Ussie guy has such long hair now wtf
-- gotta say i completely forgot Christmas Poppers were a thing. That's uh. Not what immediately comes to mind when someone uses the word poppers around me but hey that's just me
-- i forgot we so often get answers to our questions in this show. Rebecca has been doing this for years. I love when I'm right
-- Ted's 'right I'm the one with the accent here'... Ive lost track of how many times I've had that exact thought lmao
-- Love Actually! Good movie, love that Roy thought of that
-- Ted thinks singing is just talking an octave lower. Not surprising but funny nonetheless. And before you say it, yes i understand that was Jason Sudekis' solution to trying to sing in a different accent so he doesn't sound like Jason Sudekis but also. Adorable.

Fall 2017 Update!
Hey, this blog still exists! It’s been about half a year since I’ve written anything up, and it’s been a bussyyyyy time in my life. Got married, started a new position and found out I’m going to be a father next spring! Amidst all of those changes, I’ve still somehow managed to see a bunch of movies over the last 6/7ish months. I wanted to do a kind of catch-up on here to make up for lost time, a kind of ‘speed round’ for the blog. I’ll still do my end of year top 8 early January I’m sure, but I wanted to get something up before then (and I’ll be honest, we ran out of work at my job today and they’re making us watch Hocus Pocus on a super small TV in the auditorium so I’m boooorrrred). So anyway, here’s some thoughts on a selection of movies I’ve caught over the last few months!

I wanted to write about this one from earlier in the year because I wrote about Director Nacho Vigalondo’s other film ‘Timecrimes’ way back in the day for the blog (check it out with the archives link above if you feel like it). This movie was a ride. From moment to moment, I had no idea where this movie was going next. Vigalondo makes movies that nobody else could, straight from his wild imagination. Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudekis are both great in their roles, especially the latter in a shockingly dynamic role that I won’t spoil here. There are a lot of gender politics at play in this one that I wasn’t expecting, but it makes for a poignant finished product that I’m super glad I caught in theaters. Check this one out at Redbox if you want a dark, funny and totally original, unpredictable experience.

What else could I say about this one that hasn’t been said by most critics and obviously the worlds box office. This movie clicked with seemingly everyone, taking the #1 spot at the box office for 2016 so far, surprising everyone. I had a blast with this movie, with it’s creative and beautifully shot action scenes and measured pace. Wonder Woman isn’t afraid to slow down and let its characters breathe a bit, creating one of the best relationships I’ve ever seen in a superhero movie between Steve and Diana. Gal Gadot is revelatory as Diana and Chris Pine is as good as ever. I’ve always been more of a Marvel fan, but I’m truly happy that the DCU finally got a win, and I hope they have plenty more to come.

I’ve been eagerly waiting for the latest from Edgar Wright and as expected, it did not disappoint. The guy is one of the most exciting new directors working right now, possibly the MOST exciting, and his latest is a pure blast of energy like only he can deliver. More akin to a musical than his usual dark action/comedies, he’s doing something different and more challenging with Baby Driver. He’s getting even better as an action director, and the editing especially in this movie deserves an Oscar. This is one of the most fun movies you’ll see all year, and I’ll recommend it to everybody I meet.

If you’ve followed this blog for any length of time, you’ll know that director Bong Joon-ho is one of my favorite directors working today. I wrote about The Host and Snowpiercer on here, and his latest might be my favorite work of his yet. His usual balancing act of tones is on display in Okja, a movie that is equal parts a Spielberg Amblin-era film with some Miyazaki, and a good amount of dark satire to top it off. It’ll make you second guess eating meat for a while after watching it. Okja also has one of the most bonkers, out-there performances of the year with Jake Gyllenhall’s psychotic TV nature-show host. This one is a Netflix exclusive, so definitely carve out some time for Okja.

The third attempt at Spider-Man finally nails the character like only Marvel studios could. Don’t get me wrong, I really love Raimi’s Spidey 1 and 2, but Tom Holland is the PERFECT Peter Parker AND Spider-Man. The movie is more of a coming of age story than a typical superhero movie, and it benefits from having a much smaller scale than a lot of the typical Marvel/superhero movies. It also benefits greatly from taking place in this universe Marvel has been crafting for almost 10 years now. It also has probably the best Marvel villain yet in Michael Keaton’s ‘Vulture’, a character as grounded and human as our heroes. It’s another great addition to the MCU, and I can’t wait to check this one out again.

The second to last one I wanted to write about is ‘It’, the surprisingly huge box office sensation. I didn’t expect much out of this movie for one reason or another. The trailers were effective, but I just expected a run of the mill jump-scare fest. I had also watched the original movie/miniseries awhile back and thought I knew what to expect. The movie definitely has plenty of jump scares, but I was surprised at how much heart the movie had. The cast of child actors were great across the board, and I was surprised at how emotionally engaged I was with their journeys through the movie. On top of that, all of the creepy clown stuff really worked for me, and Skarsgard killed in the role of Pennywise (no pun intended). I was surprised at how much I enjoyed It, and I’m stoked to see where the story goes next in part 2

I really can’t believe this movie exists in its current form. The fact that Marvel locked down Taika Waititi for a ‘Thor’ movie is ridiculous, and that he didn’t quit mid-production is even more shocking in this Hollywood climate. Thor Ragnarok is a breath of fresh air for not only the Thor series (yes it’s obviously the best of the three) but really, for Marvel as well. In my opinion, it one-ups Guardians vol. 2 (which isn’t on here but I really enjoyed) by being a straight-up delivery machine of fun and hilarious moments. Jeff Goldblum at his Goldblumiest, Waititi as the scene stealing ‘Korg’, and Thor actually being an awesome, badass character?! Yes!
That’s going to do it for this speed round on the blog! I just wanted to do a bit of a catch up on some of what I’ve been watching lately. I’ve seen a lot more than these, and will definitely write up more near the end of the year. Some of these might be on my faves list but most won’t be. If there’s something surprisingly absent from here, chances are it’ll pop up later this year. Anyways, I hope you guys enjoyed reading this, and as always hit me up to talk about any of the above movies! I’ve been busy with my movie podcast ‘Director Showdown’ that I make with Adam Daufen, so go check that out on iTunes if you haven’t and thanks for reading!

PR: Cobra Kai soundtrack

LA-LA LAND RECORDS PRESENTS COBRA KAI: THE KARATE KID SAGA CONTINUES – ORIGINAL YOUTUBE RED SERIES SOUNDTRACK (Burbank, CA – May 21, 2018) La-La Land Records is proud to announce the release of the COBRA KAI CD soundtrack on May 22, 2018 at www.lalalandrecords.com, followed by a general retail release June 1, 2018 and on LP later this year. The hit YouTube Red series, produced by Overbrook Entertainment in association with Sony Pictures Television, debuted on May 2 and stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka reprising their roles from the original 1984 feature film “The Karate Kid.” As a special exclusive, 300 units of the CD will be available packaged in a 1980's-style replica longbox, via the label’s website (www.lalalandrecords.com), as a tribute to The Karate Kid Saga’s origins. The album features the original score by composers Leo Birenberg and Zach Robinson (SING IT!, SON OF ZORN), with the CD release featuring several exclusive, CD-only tracks.
“For COBRA KAI, we created three unique score worlds that each support a different story being told on the show,” said Birenberg. “We like to say Johnny's music is the representation of how he hears himself: as the ultimate badass, scored with face-melting guitar riffs and bruising arena drums. Daniel La Russo’s theme is supported by more orchestral, Japanese-influenced sounds and his tonal palette our through line that connects us to the earlier films and Bill Conti's legendary score.” In the highly-anticipated return of two iconic characters, the arch-rivals from the legendary Karate Kid film series reunite over 30 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament. Now living in the affluent hills of Encino, Daniel LaRusso (Macchio) leads an enviable life with his beautiful family, while running a successful string of car dealerships throughout the valley. Meanwhile, his high school adversary, Johnny Lawrence (Zabka), whose life has taken a rocky turn, seeks redemption by reopening the infamous Cobra Kai karate dojo. Their lives inevitably become intertwined and the rivalry is reignited, setting forth the next generation of “karate kids.” Composer Zach Robinson explained, “We have the new Cobra Kai students, who are scored with a blend of hard rock (inherited from Johnny), '80s inspired synthwave, and modern EDM. Part of the fun of having established these musical identities was when we got to mix and match them based on the interactions happening between the ever-twisting story arcs of the characters.” La-La Land Records is proud to announce the release of the COBRA KAI: THE KARATE KID SAGA CONTINUES soundtrack CD being released at www.lalalandrecords.com on May 22, 2018, followed by general retailers (Amazon, etc) on June 1, 2018. A digital version is available now from Madison Gate Records. La-La Land Records will also release an LP edition later in 2018. # # # www.lalalandrecords.com For more information contact KrakowerGroup[at]gmail.com, or @KrakowerGroup on Twitter About Composer Zach Robinson Zach Robinson is an LA based composer, music producer, and electronic musician. The Minutes of Our Last Meeting – Funny Comic About to Make Unfunny Movie Meeting with Studio Executives
by Joe Janes
Funny Comic About to Make Unfunny Movie Meeting with Studio Executives
Wednesday, May 16, 2018 10:00am
Frank's Office, Lot C, Studio Biz Pictures
Attendance: Jimmy, Frank,, Merrill, Anton (taking notes)
FRANK: Come on in. Have a seat. Relax. Make yourself comfortable. Would you like a LaCroix (la-croy)?
JIMMY: Is that how you say that? LaCroix (la-croy)?
(Frank starts laughing)
FRANK: See, Merrill? That’s why we brought Jimmy in! FUN-NEE!
JIMMY: I was legitimately asking.
(Frank cracks up even harder)
FRANK: Stop. Stop. My stomach hurts. Oh, my. I’m going to have six-pack abs after this meeting if you keep making me laugh like that. There’s LaCroix (la-croy) in the mini-fridge behind you if you want any. But don’t you get up and get it. We’ll have someone come in and do that.
JIMMY: Thanks. I’m fine.
MERRILL: Loved your Netflix special.
FRANK: LOVED it. Absolutely. Very astute. Insightful, while also being very, very funny. Almost started bleeding, I was laughing so hard.
JIMMY: What was your favorite part?
FRANK: My favorite part? What was your favorite part, Merrill?
MERRILL: I loved all of it. All of it. What about you, Frank?
FRANK: So many good bits to choose from. I really liked that part near the end. The part where you had the whole audience going. You probably had to edit out some of the laughter to keep the special from going too long. What was that part? Anton, what was that part that I was telling you about that I thought was so funny and we needed to get Jimmy in here?
ANTON: That would be the part where he compares his mother to a llama.
FRANK: Really?...Oh, God! Yes! That’s it. That was such a great mother/llama impression.
JIMMY: I don’t really do a llama impression-
FRANK: Let’s talk movies! Jimmy, we want to produce a hit comedy. You’re hot, but not too hot. That’s perfect for us. This movie could explode your career. Blow it wide open. You could be making Jason Sudekis money. Would you like that?
JIMMY: Sure, I guess. Is there a script?
FRANK: Script schmipt! We could turn the cameras on you and just have you be funny for 88 minutes.
JIMMY: Wouldn’t that just be my Netflix special?
(Frank cracks up, again.)
FRANK: Do you ever turn it off, Jimmy? This is why we want to work with you.
MERRILL: We have several scripts we can choose from. There’s one where you play a rookie cop who has to go undercover with a veteran cop, like The Rock, or something.
FRANK: Classic formula.
MERRILL: There’s the one where you fall in love and are trying to keep the woman of your dreams from marrying a bad guy, like The Rock, or something.
FRANK: People love romantic comedy. The guys love it because it’s funny and the women love it because it’s romantic. Cannot lose. We will be bringing trucks full of money and dumping it on your front lawn.
MERRILL: There’s just so many to choose from. The talking cigarette vending machine one. You meet while undercover and fall in love. The voice of the cigarette machine would be played by-
JIMMY: The Rock?
FRANK: No, no, no, no. Too…jovial. It would have to be a woman. Someone sexy. Like Jennifer Lawrence.
JIMMY: Well, I don’t know much about making movies-
FRANK: Which is why we are here. You’re a stand-up guy. We’re the movie guys…and woman. Merrill’s a woman. Let us do all the work. You just show up on set and turn on the funny.
MERRILL: We have a great director lined up. Maybe you have heard of him. Michael Gerber.
JIMMY: Can’t say that I have.
FRANK: Seasoned professional. I’d rattle off the things he’s directed, but it would just embarrass you for not knowing. Number one rule around here, don’t embarrass the talent.
MERRILL: He has done many big projects - comedy, drama, dramady, comema - on the UPN Network.
JIMMY: Is that still-?
FRANK: Mike knows what he’s doing behind the camera. He knows to point it in your direction and let you do you. He’s not going to be one of those hands-on directors. You do your funny. The riffing and the ad-libbing and the llama impressions. Don’t worry about the script. You don’t like something, you can fix it while you’re shooting. If that doesn’t work, Mike will add a dancing-while-working-or-cooking segment or a montage full of bits. It will be a gold mine of comedy.
JIMMY: I really would like to see a script first…
FRANK: Of course, you would. Why wouldn’t you? You're a reader. Just know, that if you don’t like it, you can change it. Hire some of your buddies to be on set. People who think you’re funny. Have them improv with you. Some of the greatest comedies of all time had no script.
JIMMY: Such as…?
FRANK: Anton?
ANTON: Old School 3 had no script.
JIMMY: I didn’t even know it had an existence.
(Frank laughs hard, again.)
FRANK: Jimmy, this thing can’t lose. Merrill will send some scripts your way. One I really want you to look at is a reboot of Get Smart.
JIMMY: A reboot of a reboot?
FRANK: That was ten years ago. No one remembers it. Or the TV show. Your fans will think it’s a brand new thing. They’ll love it.
JIMMY: I’ll have to think about this…
FRANK: You do that. And, let me mention this before I forget. It is a small budget move. We’ll start small and then build as we do more movies together. We'll only be able to pay you five million dollars for six weeks of work.
JIMMY: That Get Smart thing sounds pretty good.
MERRILL: We can get The Rock to play The Chief.
