Tactical Takeaway: USA vs Canada

First half of USA/Canada is in the books and Poch has his work cut out of him when he gets started. I think we need to get rid of the ball sooner when we attack, too many players trying to dribble through traffic. Someone needs to remind the wingers and midfielders, including Pulisic, to make Balogun the star. He’s making runs and they’re not playing him in often enough. Jesse Marsch teams will give you space in behind but you have to pass into that space. They hunt in packs when they defend, which makes dribbling through them very difficult. That’s why we keep turning the ball over and it’s creating chance after chance for Canada. If not for Schultz in goal, we could be 3-0 down right now.

Conversely, Canada looks sharp and hungry. They’re closing down well in midfield and creating chances off the turnovers. Clearly Jesse Marsch wants to send a message today and I don’t blame him. The only problem is Canada can rarely keep playing at such a high-tempo for 90 minutes. Let’s see how they manage the game.
