Wimbledon QWD SF: Andrew Lapthorne/Guy Sasson [2] def. Ahmet Kaplan/David Wagner 6-2, 6-4 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 BBC iPlayer
A. Kaplan/D. Wagner visibly stepped up toward the end of each set despite A. Kaplan's injury, trying to inject some more pace they absorbed as Andy/Guy managed their tightness. They almost forced the deciding set, but even though the margin appeared thin between both pairs, maintaining the rhythm since the setup and carrying it through their shot placement in constructing their points became crucial for the second seeds to stand out in this match. As a result, Andy/Guy had 1% more serve returns in with 83%, fired 4 return winners (among possibly many), and created 13 break points (7 more than the unseeded pair), converting 38% of them as this progressed.
Interestingly, both pairs had distinct service game strengths in this match. A. Kaplan/D. Wagner landed 82% of their first serves, but they could only win points from half of them, making Andy/Guy's service games slightly more reliable as they tried to avoid more troubles, mostly when they had to seal the set/match. However, their second serves posed a different story, as their 5 double faults made it more vulnerable with a 43% winning percentage, 26% lesser than A. Kaplan/D. Wagner throughout the match.
In the finals, first seeds Sam Schroder/Niels Vink already await, as they defeated Heath Davidson/Donald Ramphadi 6-2, 6-2. Interestingly, this would be their second Grand Slam-level meeting within the past 2 years after the Roland Garros final several months ago, where the first set appeared more competitive as Andy/Guy went out of steam in the second set. This match could also be the moment where their balance of power and endurance remain tested alongside their point construction, making it another match to look forward to with a potential delivery along the way at their best.

Norwich City Dealt Huge Blow Ahead Of This Weekend's Clash With Stoke City
Norwich City are facing another injury setback early into the new campaign as Chilean midfielder Marcelino Nunez was seen on crutches following Chile’s 3-1 defeat away at Uruguay. The Canaries signed Nunez for an undisclosed fee last summer from Primera Division side Universidad Catolica. The international has been a key man at Carrow Road in the middle of the park ever since joining the club but…

Compared to the nervy first set, A. Kaplan/D. Wagner had a better start to the second set, even nailing some pressing moments better before Andy/Guy struck back. A. Kaplan started the set with a beautiful backhand finish for his 2-point lead before holding their serves to 1-0, but it was not until D. Wagner's volley that paved the way to A. Kaplan's stunning backhand winner for their initial break points in the next game even if the second seeds still held to 1-1. From here, both pairs' point construction became neater that several pressing moments determined it for either to stand out.
In the third game, Guy scored a backhand pass to set up his and Andy's break point before another stunning pass generated their other break point, and Andy's wonderful finish converted their break point to 2-1. They then consolidated to 3-1, and Guy's drive volley secured their earlier break points again before A. Kaplan's +1 forehand error caused the double break lead to 4-1, where the Turkish player took a medical timeout later on for his fingers.
The next few games might have been the fruition for the unseeded pair, but it was insufficient for a lot of reasons. Andy's court coverage in the seventh game equalized the point, but A. Kaplan/D. Wagner still held their service game (5-2), which was where the second seed having an opportunity to serve for the match. However, outside of handling their forehand errors, a lovely conclusion from D. Wagner's lob to Andy's previous lob secured their break-back to 5-3.
In the next game, Andy/Guy somehow had 4 match points, having one of them being saved on their return as a result of A. Kaplan's overdone smash. By then, the unseeded pair held their serves to 5-4, but it was not until Andy's forehand error in response to D. Wagner's preceding forehand, where even miscommunication between each person in the second-seeded pair occurred in the first point of the said game. This way, Guy took over most of the strokes in the next point through his forehand to equalize the point, which helped because they still managed to serve it out (6-4) to confirm their spot in the finals.
