Joe Versus the Volcano (1990) is truly one of the movies of all time. the first 45 minutes are gorgeous cinema a la pink floyd's the wall, complete with excellent soundtrack and gray-toned capitalist hellscape setting. tom hanks sets us up for a beautiful and allegorical story of fulfillment while escaping the soul-sucking Machine of industry. the second 25 minutes are suddenly a heartfelt adventure/rom-com premise, exploring the meaning of life when faced with a terminal illness and deciding to live to the fullest and make human connections. two jarringly different aesthetics and tones back-to-back, but the main character ties together each segment in a way that feels believable, despite a lingering feeling that these could've been two separate good movies. and of course the final half hour is a pacific-islander-cultural-appropriation technicolor fever dream of absurdist and slapstick comedy that makes you wonder if maybe you missed the credits and tubi autoplayed another movie. anyways it's pretty decent. rating: 3 entirely separate films out of 4 enormous trunks - quite good! just. uh. buckle up for the extremely in-your-facely inaccurate depiction of pacific islanders out of absolutely nowhere.

We're only like half an hour in, but so far Joe vs the Volcano feels. Chestertonian, somehow. Ex-suicide energy.

(admittedly: it also brings the one and only time I watched Office Space to mind. Hints of Fight Club. With bits of Stranger than Fiction.)
