Okay so I want to preface this by saying I know nothing about philosophy or art I just have opinions and I love to talk

But in my opinion, yeah. It's not art unless someone is looking at it or appreciating it. I don't think you have to be actively looking at art for it to still be art, as long as someone is thinking about it it's still art. Art is the meaning that we give it, so as long as someone is giving it meaning by studying, looking at, thinking about, or protecting it, then it's art. But if it is inert somewhere in a cave, and no one remembers it, it's not technically art.

IMPORTANT CAVIAT: I am NOT pulling a that-one-guy-from-Jordan-Peele's-Nope and saying that we need to then search for everything last bit of art, take it from its original context, and rescue it so that it can be art again. Art dies just like humans die, and it would be an affront to the art itself to rip it out of its grave, damaging its surrounding context, just to give it the meaning we think it should have. There is merit to studying art history and preserving it for future generations, but if something has been forgotten, there is often a reason why. Maybe it would damage the cave system it's in to excavate it. Maybe it's been buried with some and it would be disrespectful to take it out of that grave and disturb that person (and that art's) death.

I think there's a very western idea that we have to see everything, own everything, and ascribe our own meaning to everything. Just because an art piece has died, I don't think it's up to us to reanimate it. Some things just need to lie.

I am very pro-archeology, but I think it should be as non-invasive as possible, and that we shouldn't be destroying the land and the cultures already existing on it just to squeeze a few more secrets out of it. Honestly, dig sites have their place, but just talking to the native people of a place will often give you a much more accurate and extensive account of history than an archeological dig.

For instance, I think the excavation of the pyramids should have been MUCH less extensive than it has been. European explorers used dynamite on the tombs of real people, destroying a lot of the historical knowledge that could have been gained from it, robbing a culture of their own history, and stealing a bunch of shit from its original context, which led to a shit ton of cultural misunderstandings because of Eurocentrism. And we still don't know a ton about the pyramids!

There's this idea that anything that isn't being used or looked at is "useless" or "wasted", and I don't want to imply I agree with that. Art serves its purpose, and then it dies. Such is existence.

So yeah, tldr art can die but that's a good thing and we shouldn't destroy ourselves trying to save it.
