Fanvid Rec List #1
Ah, fanvids, my most beloved and underappreciated medium. Fanvids are video edits often done to music (though not all fanvids are music videos). They take an absurdly long time to make. If you check out any of the vids on this list, be sure to comment to give some appreciation to these great vidders!
General warning that fanvids often include flashing lights in their transitions, so take caution if that is an issue for you.
Fresh Blood: Vamp Willow & Tara by brunerousse
Fandom: Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Song or concept: Constructed reality in which vampire Willow sires vampire Tara.
Rec: This is THE constructed reality to me. It really opened my eyes to that as an option. It’s got evil gay vampires and some great visual parallels using footage from a couple shows other than Buffy to create the AU!
Sibling Rivalry by brihana25 ( @brihana25 )
Fandom:Stargate SG1
Song or concept: “Oh No!” from Veggie Tales, humor
Rec: This is a seminal work to me. It’s one of if not the first fanvid I ever saw. I loved it when I first saw it, was one of the things I always thought of regarding fanvids, and now I make my own vids and hold this one partially responsible for that. It’s hilarious and delightful. I was just rewatching it with a big goofy grin on my face. I finally started watching SG-1 recently (I saw this vid like a decade ago the first time), and I’ve consistently referred to the sarcophagi as “scrabble tables”. I also get absurdly excited when I spot a clip in the show that was used in this vid.
Will Scarlet | F*cking Awesome ♛ by Maria M.
Fandom: Once Upon A Time In Wonderland
Song or concept: “Fucking Awesome/Thrift Shop”, humor
Rec: This is a fun vid and the thing that got me to watch Once in Wonderland, which is now one of my favorite shows.
[AVATAR] Katara // River by Force Captain Tilly
Fandom: Avatar the Last Airbender
Song or concept: “Like A River”
Rec: A brilliant character study of Katara, her ferocity and kindness and passion. The transitions in the vid are excellent as one scene’s bending flows into the next fluidly.
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell || I'm Dark Matter by KnittinGirl
Fandom: Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell
Song or concept: “I’m Dark Matter”
Rec: This vid is grand, magnificent, and cascading. The use of short cuts and beautiful visuals creates a sweeping sense of grandness and magic in an uncontrolled storm. Beautiful video.
Buffy and Faith (BTVS) - We Must Be Killers - HD Version by JESS9191
Fandom: Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Song or concept: “We Must Be Killers”
Rec: This video is a brilliant study of Buffy and Faith’s relationship and parallels. “You kill me? You become me.” A stunning video in its visuals with a smattering of dialogue from the show punctuating its every point. The clips are well cut to perfect move from one to the other.
Angel the Series | Rescue Me by 1SnoWhiteQueen1
Fandom: Angel The Series
Song or concept: “Rescue Me”
Rec: Now there’s a vid that will make me want to laugh and cry. A focus on the relationship between the early Angel Investigations crew; Angel, Cordelia, Wesley, and Gunn. It so perfectly demonstrates how much this team loved and cared for each other and how their relationship still fell apart as time went on and circumstances and hurt came between them. This covers the whole team, but I associate the song/vid most strongly with Wesley and Gunn. It’s a song I think of when I think of them.
Buffyverse but it's a heist movie by SlayerVid
Fandom: Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel The Series
Song or concept: “A Good Song Never Dies”, humor, heist, constructed reality
Rec:This is exactly what it says on the tin, and it’s GLORIOUS. Grab your balaclava and your climbing gear and get ready to crawl through the vents because it’s heist time, baby! Absolutely excellent and perfect and hilarious.
Rockstar - a Buffy video by Jasmin
Fandom: Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Song or concept: “Rockstar”, humor
Rec: An absolutely hilarious video; I couldn’t stop giggling the whole time I was rewatching this. It lines up video to lyrics in the most literal way possible. We all just wanna be big rock stars!
Addicted To You by AurumCalendula
Fandom: Synetic Theater’s Phantom of the Opera
Song or concept: “Toxic” by Anthony Willis
Rec: I was delighted to find a vid for Synetic’s Phantom. It uses the visuals well as they flow eerily together with the slow instrumental version of “Toxic”.
Way Down We Go || A Zuko tribute by The Stranger Artist
Fandom: Avatar the Last Airbender
Song or concept: “Way Down We Go”
Rec: An excellent character study for Zuko. The clips sync up beautifully with the beats of the song. The video is full of movement, and the transitions are quite good.
Whedonverse Women - So What by Stefanie (valamd)
Fandom: Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel The Series, Dollhouse, Firefly
Song or concept: “So What”
Rec: A vid full of movement and quick transitions and ladies (+Clyde) being badasses. What is not to love?
Believer - Sense8 by absolute_maximus
Fandom: Sense8
Song or concept: “Believer”
Rec: Man, rewatching this made me want to rewatch Sense8. An epic video with every clip fitting perfectly with the beat. I think of this vid every time I hear this song. This perfectly captures the show.
Come Together by Rosemarycat5
Fandom: Good Omens (season 1)
Song or concept: “Come Together” by Gary Clark Jr.
Rec: Fuck it, this is one of my own fanvids. Sue me. This is the fanvid I made that I am currently most proud of. It was so fun to make.
-
If you have any fanvid recs or want to share your own, reblog this and add or make a new post and tag me so I can watch them!

I've decided that 1939 Chief Justice Frollo is still Gringoire's old teacher like in the book they just had a massive falling out over some extremely niche academic subject so now Frollo goes around pretending he doesn't know him, calling him a heretic and hating on his poetry like he wasn't the one who taught him to write in the first place. (Gringoire in turn ALSO pretends not to know Frollo personally and has started writing political and social satire just to spite him )
#cough cough Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell#that would also explain why 1939 movie Gringoire is much more political#than his novel counterpart seems to be#pierre gringoire#claude frollo#(well officially he's JEHAN Frollo in the movie but we all know he's really Claude)#the hunchback of notre dame 1939#the hunchback of notre dame#notre dame de paris

Currently Reading
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell By Susanna Clarke
Piranesi was one of the best books that i'd read in decades, so I decided to pick up Susanna Clarke's debut novel.
It's an absolute beast at 849 pages, so it might take me a while to get through, but I absolutely love her writing style.
I really hope this one lives up to my expectations, even though I have absolutely no idea what this novel is about. I'm going in blind.

I am watching the TV adaptation of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell and only now I realize just how terribly dark and sad that story truly is.
The book, because it is written with such Austen-like lightness and wit, somehow obscured my reading. Strange´s emotions as he goes through his learning and loss, the desperation of those trapped in the fairy realm, the anger, the jealousies, and the pain are so naked and dark on the screen, as they are not covered with those comforting words and imagery conjured up by the writer.
The adaptation is excellent. But so, so sad.

Been padding my reading list this year with novellas and am now up to a “five books ahead” lead in Goodreads because I am 1. A slow reader (and taking three classes and working full time and have other media interests) and 2. Am about to start a 1000 page doorstopper lmao
#about to read Jonathan strange and Mr norell#my annual challenge is only 35 books mind you and I would ideally like to beat it#because then I’m highly likely to reach next years which will probably be 40 or 45#if it weren’t for novellas and shorter novels this year I’d never be able to make it though lmao#that said I’ve already read two very long history books so 🤷♂️ maybe I’d be okay

As many others, I am processing my disappoint with C3 and especially choices in the finale. Do you have any recommendations of narratives (tv, books, movies, video games, actual play, etc.) that you have really enjoyed and might recommend as something that really sticks the landing? My recommendation to others who might see this ask would be the Mistborn book trilogy, as I felt it had an incredibly satisfying ending that was surprising but also so clear in the narrative once you looked back. Love reading all your meta!
I do love Mistborn so that is a good one; some others
LOTR; this is obvious but like, I know where I come from (also very good in a sense of You Will Be Changed And Can Never Truly Go Back)
Vorkosigan saga 4ever; this is a bit of a commitment because to get the incredible middle section of it to properly land (Memory/Komarr/A Civil Campaign) you do sort have to read everything that came before, which is good but doesn't make me eat drywall
I have played 2.5 video games in the past decade as discussed extensively but I personally do feel that Veilguard, while weak in some parts, did stick the landing for me, and Disco Elysium did as well and very much hits a lot of the cathartic/comforting elements I just mentioned in my previous ask.
I Saw the TV Glow for a film I saw relatively recently that lands an ambiguous ending very well
The Fifth Season (trilogy) by NK Jemison
for standalone books: Both Piranesi and Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell by Susanna Clarke; and The City and the City by China Mieville all manage to land bittersweet and/or weird endings and are genuinely unique concepts
Comic series: if you came away from C3 like "wow I actually really loved the scenes in the finale with the gods talking about what this means for them, and wish the concepts of divinity and cycles had been explored in depth" run don't walk to pick up The Wicked and the Divine (completed)
TV shows: Mad Men is good throughout and never misses the mark, though i will admit it's like I'm so glad I watched it all the way through as it aired, and I don't know if I'll ever do a rewatch? but also I'm not a massive rewatcher. Succession also sticks the landing. It's a dark landing, to be sure, and one that never flinches from, well, consequences, but they do stick it. It's been a hot minute since I watched the Wire and iirc it gets uneven in parts (though still excellent throughout) but also people should just watch The Wire.
Other actual play: all three seasons of NADDPod stick the landing, but especially the first nails it. I like TAZ but I do think it can sometimes soften its blows, though the tone of the show is such that I'm more forgiving. I also find myself saying "I really enjoy D20, but endings are not necessarily the strong suit" and that's maybe something I should explore. The other actual plays I watch either I haven't finished, or they haven't finished, which is wild to consider.
Fiction Podcasts: Penumbra podcast, Midst, Silt Verses - I'm a bit of a broken record but all three of this end in a way that is, above all, true to the work and deeply satisfying.

Typically my advice is if you didn’t enjoy an author the first time, that author is probably just not for you regardless of how much everyone else might love them.
Ultimately every narrator the series has is so unreliable. Your perception of the necromancy and the gross sci fi shit is but a shadow on the wall and the series expects you to grope toward an understanding without laying anything out in a straightforward manner.
That said MILD SPOILER:
Harrow does try to explode someone with bones and there’s more focus on her magic as she tries to survive the world. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
i didnt love gideon the ninth when i read it a couple years ago. should i give harrow a shot
#ramblies#the locked tomb#i had a ton of people recommend Jonathan strange and Mr Norell and I fucking hated every page and after I finished it I was like#this wasn’t remotely worth my time or energy#I just picked up a book that was recommended as having queer characters and two chapters in I was like this voice doesn’t appeal to me#I used to be so proud that I always finished books but now I realize I don’t have to waste my time if I don’t love it#tlt

Do you recommend Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norell? If I spelled that right 👀
Not personally, no 😅 it really should be the perfect book for me, but when I reread it a few years ago there were things that really annoyed me (I can't remember what though, besides Mr Norrell's general existence lol). There were some parts I did want to like though, so I'm still going to give Piranesi a shot. Enough people do like it that I'd say if it sounds interesting, go for it!
#asks#jonathan strange and mr norrell#it is just not a book for me#everyone else is welcome to enjoy it
