Kissing was common among the Bolsheviks as a sign of friendship, joy, or gratitude, depending on the circumstances. Stalin also kissed, mostly with officers.

“An old battle-scarred tiger.”

Those were the words of an american diplomat to describe Josef Stalin.

He spoke haltingly, with a heavy Georgian accent, the expression on his face alternating between benign calmness and bored inscrutability. He usually wore baggy trousers and a gray, square-cut tunic that hung loosely on his body. In the presence of subordinates who did not belong to his innermost circle he was low-key, pacing soundlessly back and forth in his soft Caucasian boots, smoking or chewing his proverbial pipe, stopping to extract tobacco from cigarettes to fill it. He rarely lost his temper but there were moments when his yellowish eyes would light up in a flash of menace and fury, as he turned, briefly, on some unfortunate subordinate.
