Every New Vegas Companion’s Approximate Birth Year (Part 2/3)
Dean Domino — 2020
I say he was born in 2020 because that year was the WORST and he’s the WORST.
He’s giving late fifties.
Raul — 2047
Canon — he gives the year in dialogue.
This man LIES, he was only like 30 when he got ghoulified! Why is he mentally 73?
Ghoul lore is inconsistent and I will gladly die mad about it.
Rex — 2071
He’s 209.
Lily — 2078
She’s 203 and was 75 when taken by the Master.
:(
Dog/God — 2134
Absolutely no backstory beyond what we can assume by virtue of being a nightkin.
Fallout begins in 2161 and the Master was collecting people from vaults before that. I think they were a teenager at that time because they’re in a perpetual state of transition between impulse and maturity.
Joshua — 2227
He describes himself as “young” when he left New Canaan in 2246.
Edward was 20 and it makes sense for Joshua to have been a little younger.
Mormon boys typically leave for their missions at 19.
Cass — 2244
She’s 37. (Born three years after Fallout 2.)
Arcade — 2245
He’s 35, but I have him born in the prior year because he’s a November and I will die on this hill.
Waking Cloud — 2248
She has three children and the youngest is six.
Christine — 2252
Making her a grade or two above Veronica makes sense to me.
Does the Brotherhood have grades? Whatever.
Veronica — 2253
She’s 27.
Boone — 2255
He’s 26.
I swear I thought he was 60 my first playthrough.
Follows-Chalk — 2262
Tell me this man isn’t a teenager.
He YEARNS. He’s directionless but he YEARNS.
ED-E — 2275
My toddler baby prince darling, so baby so small
ED-E II — 2277
He was auto-manufactured sometime soon after the Divide blew up.
He only got his memories once ED-E made it to Nevada, but we don’t know when that was.
Roxie — 2282
It’s a Ship of Theseus question whether she existed and in what form before the Courier got there, but for simplicity I’ll just say 2282.
Part 1
Part 3

( Nikki Roumel as Young Hallie )
Part 12
The Hybrids Bright Star
Tags - @melvia-ito @lover-of-books-and-tea @kmc1989 @tallrock35 @elenavampire21 @frost-queen @anonymousmuffinbear
The humid Tennessee air hung heavy, thick with the scent of pine and damp earth. It did little to clear the fog that clung to my mind, a fog woven from fragmented memories and a past I was desperately trying to outrun.
A shiver traced its way down my spine, and it wasn't just from the cool mountain breeze. It was a residue of the fear that had been my constant companion for so long. Fear of her. Fear of him. Fear of… everything.
I closed my eyes, and the unwanted visions clawed their way to the surface.
Six-year-old Hallie sat huddled in the corner of the living room, clutching a tattered stuffed bear. The trailer reeked of stale beer and despair. My mother, Sarah, sat at the kitchen table, a half-empty bottle clutched in her hand, the flickering light of the bare bulb reflecting in her bloodshot eyes.
"Hallie, honey, go to bed," she slurred, her voice thick with liquor.
I didn't move. Going to bed meant being alone with the monsters in my head, the ones whispering about Liberty, about what happened in the woods.
The phone rang, shattering the silence. Sarah snatched it up, her voice instantly hardening.
"Yeah, this is she. Who's this?" A pause. Her face tightened. "Joshua… What do you want?"
The conversation was a jagged piece of glass, each word cutting deeper. I couldn't understand the specifics, but the anger in my mother's voice was unmistakable.
"Don't you dare bring her name into this, Joshua! You have no right! You took her from me! You and your… your sick obsession!"
The next few minutes were a whirlwind of accusations and bitter recriminations. Joshua, whoever he was, was on the other end, defending himself, but his words were drowned out by Sarah's escalating rage.
"You left us, Sarah! You ran! What was I supposed to do?" His voice was faint, but clear.
"I left?!" Sarah screamed, slamming her fist on the table, sending the bottle rattling. I flinched, burying my face in the bear. "You killed her! You tried to force the merge when they were just babies! Four years old, Joshua! They were too young! Liberty was too young!" Tears streamed down her face, mixing with the stale makeup caked on her skin. "And now you call? After all these years? To remind me of what you took from me?"
The mention of Liberty, my twin sister, always sent Sarah spiraling. I didn't remember much about Liberty, just fleeting images of two tiny girls laughing, playing in the sun. But I knew, deep down, that her absence had broken something in my mother, something that could never be fixed.
"It was an accident, Sarah! You know that! I thought... I thought it would work." His voice was desperate.
"Accident? You tried to force a magical ritual on two innocent children! It's supposed to happen when they are 22 years old! Do you even hear yourself?" Sarah spat, her voice laced with venom. "And now you want to know why I left? Why I drank? You think I could look at you, look at Hallie, and not see Liberty's ghost staring back at me?"
The fight continued, a relentless barrage of blame and regret. Finally, Sarah slammed the phone down, her breath coming in ragged gasps. She turned to me, her eyes wild and unfocused.
"It's your fault," she snarled, her voice thick with malice. "If you hadn't been born, if she hadn't had to divide her attention, maybe Liberty would still be here."
My heart hammered in my chest. It wasn't the first time she'd said those words, but they never lost their sting.
She staggered towards me, her hand raised. I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing for the familiar sting.
I blinked, the image of my mother's face still burned behind my eyelids. I was so tired of these memories. So tired of the fear.
"Penny for your thoughts, love?"
Klaus's voice, smooth as velvet and laced with a hint of amusement, pulled me back to reality. I was back in the Smoky Mountains, walking alongside Klaus Mikaelson, the Original Hybrid. Stefan trailed slightly behind us, his face grim and preoccupied.
I wrapped my arms around myself, trying to shake off the lingering chill. "Just… remembering," I said, my voice barely a whisper.
Klaus stopped, turning to face me, his blue eyes unreadable. "Some memories are best left buried, Hallie. Don't let the past dictate your present."
He was right, of course. But burying the past was easier said than done, especially when the past was a constant reminder of everything I lacked: love, family, a sense of belonging.
I looked at him, at the casual arrogance in his posture, the predatory glint in his eyes. He was a monster, everyone said so. But he was also… compelling. Intriguing. And, strangely, he seemed to understand me in a way no one else ever had.
"Why are you doing this, Klaus?" I asked, the question bubbling to the surface. "Why do you want a hybrid army? Elijah told me you have a family... so why do you need one made up of compelled creatures?"
He smirked, a flash of white teeth in the fading light. "Elijah has a… romanticized view of our family, love. We are bound by blood, by shared history, but that doesn't necessarily equate to unwavering loyalty. Besides," he added, his voice softening, "a family should be by choice, not obligation, wouldn't you agree?"
His words resonated with me, echoing the emptiness I felt inside. I had no family, not really. Just a collection of broken memories and the lingering ghost of a sister I barely remembered.
"I…" I hesitated, unsure of how to articulate the longing that gnawed at me. "I don't know what it's like to have a real family."
Klaus stepped closer, his gaze intense. "Perhaps," he said, his voice a low murmur, "it's time you found one."
Before I could respond, a guttural growl ripped through the air. We had reached the werewolf pack's encampment. The air crackled with tension.
Klaus's demeanor shifted, the charm replaced by a cold, calculating focus. "It's fascinating, actually… A werewolf who isn't beholden to the moon, a vampire who doesn't burn in the sun. A true hybrid."
A man, Ray, stirred, his eyes fluttering open. "What's happening to me?" he groaned.
Klaus grinned. "Excellent timing, Ray. Very dramatic."
He gestured towards Stefan. "Are any of you human?" Stefan asked, his voice flat. "Your friend here needs human blood to complete his transition to vampire. If he doesn't get it, he will die."
Klaus's eyes scanned the group. "Doesn't take much, just a sample. Anyone? A boyfriend, a girlfriend, along for the ride?" He stopped, his gaze settling on a terrified-looking man. "You."
He surged forward, sinking his teeth into the man's forearm. Stefan, with surprising speed, ripped him away, throwing him to the ground in front of Ray.
A woman screamed, protesting, but Klaus silenced her with a casual flick of his wrist.
"It's the new order, sweetheart," Klaus said, his voice devoid of emotion. "You join us, or you die."
"I'd rather die than be a vampire," she spat.
"Wrong choice," Klaus said, forcing his blood into her mouth. Ray, desperate, began to feed on the man on the ground.
"She'll thank me for that later," Klaus chuckled. Then, without a second thought, he snapped the woman's neck. "Okay, who's next?" His eyes glowed yellow, his fangs extended.
The scene descended into chaos. Werewolves were screaming and begging but there was nothing anyone could do. The next hours were a blur of blood and violence. Klaus was a whirlwind of death, his movements swift and brutal. I watched, horrified, but also… mesmerized. There was a primal power in him, a raw energy that both repelled and attracted me.
As night fell, the air was thick with the stench of death. Klaus stood over the body of a man named Derek, wiping blood from his mouth. "Bad news, my friend. End of the road for you."
The woman, who had been forced to drink Klaus's blood, lunged at me, her eyes filled with hate and desperation. I gasped, stumbling backward, but before she could reach me, Klaus was there, a blur of motion.
"Careful, love," he growled, his voice a dangerous rumble. "There's only one Alpha here."
Then, a chilling sight. All the werewolves that Klaus had turned started bleeding from their eyes. They looked like zombies.
“Bloody Hell.” I managed to hear Klaus say.
Stefan returned later, dragging a half-transformed Ray. The rest of the pack were dead.
"They went rabid," Klaus explained, his voice shockingly subdued. "Some of them, I killed. The others just… bled out. In the end… they're all dead. I did everything I was told! I should be able to turn them. I broke the curse. I killed a werewolf. I killed a vampire. I killed the doppelganger."
Stefan looked like death warmed over. "Last I checked, I'm dying… and you don't want to heal me. I had to take him out. I didn't have a choice. I failed you. I'm sorry. Do what you have to do."
Klaus stared at him for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Then, he picked up a bottle of beer, bit his wrist, and poured his blood into it, handing it to Stefan.
I watched the exchange, confused. Was this… compassion? Or just another manipulation? I wasn't sure I wanted to know.
"I'm going for a walk," I said, turning away from the carnage. I needed to get away, to clear my head, to try to make sense of everything that had happened.
As I walked away, I could hear Klaus's voice behind me. "Where do you think you're going, love?"
"Nowhere," I said, my voice flat. "Just… nowhere."
I didn't know where I was going, or what I wanted. All I knew was that I couldn't stay there, surrounded by death and violence. I needed to find something, anything, to cling to in the darkness. Maybe, just maybe, I could find a place, a family, a home, where I truly belonged. A place where the ghosts of my past wouldn't haunt me. A place where I could finally be free.

thinking about how the theme of letting go (and the related motif of critically examining long-held beliefs/relationships) appears with the companions.
there's arcade and veronica, who were raised in insular environments and surrounded by enemies their entire lives, who fundamentally disagree with the politics of those groups, and who have to find a way to reconcile the love and loyalty they have for the only families they've ever known with their personal ideologies and goals.
while cassidy and crimson caravans aren't major factions in the vein of the ncr/enclave/brotherhood, cass' quest also revolves around whether she upholds the legacy of her family or follows her own path.
boone is disillusioned with the ncr after the bitter springs massacre but still wears his first recon beret, perhaps as a sign of lingering loyalty, or perhaps as penance. he participated in a horrible war crime because he was following orders, because that mindset was drilled into him since he joined the military. he's not as ideologically opposed to the ncr as arcade and veronica are to the enclave and brotherhood, respectively, but the similarity is worth noting.
what makes these companion quests so memorable is that we're meeting these characters at critical crossroads in their lives, where they have to come to terms with complicated attachments, where they'll define themselves by whether they choose to hang on to a legacy or strike out on their own.

How The FNV Companions (+Benny and Joshua) React When You're Exhausted
➼ Word Count » 0.5k ➼ Warnings » None ➼ Genre » Platonic/Romantic, Hurt/Comfort
Boone would notice early on how you seem to breathe heavier than normal and drag your feet through the dirt. He knows how important it is for someone to have their health up, and would stop the moment he deemed that you were in a safe enough area to do so. He has no qualms about calling it a day and setting up a temporary camp. Even if it does set your schedule back, your strength is vital for anything you do to be effective, and he'd take as long as he needed to for you to regain it.
Arcade has you lay down on one of the mattresses in the Old Mormon Fort or if you're out in the Mojave, he'll hide you behind a rock or in a cave. The second he sees that you're drained he'll put his hand on your forehead to make sure you're not overheating or sick in any way before he gives you some water and says you can both sit down for a minute.
Raul will say something like, "Jeez, boss, you look like you're gonna pass out" before dragging you into some shade. He'll sit there with you and tell stories until you start feeling better.
Lily is always making sure that you're doing alright, so the second she sees you beginning to collapse she'll pull out some water and offer it to you. A lot of the time she'll even offer you her hat so that you can better keep the sun off of you.
It depends on where you and Cass are headed. If you're off to do something minor she'll stop and let you rest, but if you're going to go avenge her caravan then she'll probably convince you to keep going. She's not trying to be mean when she does that, she's just really determined to cover as much ground as you can when you're off doing something important.
Veronica doesn't mind sitting down and waiting for you to regain yourself. You could lay down, or sleep, or anything else and she'll be sitting right next to you. She might even try and fan you with her hands.
ED-E's not really sure what to do so he just zips around you while you lean against the side of some building.
Rex will gladly lay his head on your lap and stay with you while you recover from the heat or just regain some of your strength again.
Benny gets a little annoyed, especially if you're off doing something he finds important, but if you're together romantically, he'll choke down his thoughts and stay with you while you recover. If you're just a business partner, he might just leave you there in the dust. He doesn't have time for this! Surely, you'd understand. If you're in The Tops, he might be a tad snarky about it, but he'll set a room up for you and send you up as quickly as you can. It's better to have people who are awake and healthy than tired and disposable, he supposes.
Joshua takes your well-being very seriously and will take you into a nearby cave to rest. He won't let anything touch or come near you. You can relax with the knowledge that you're in great hands.
