I planned ahead of time, yay. Today's prompt was "Forest Guardian", so first thing that came to mind was a troll. Not sure if a troll really qualifies as a Kaiju, but it's big and eats people, so it's close enough.

I didn't draw the traditional troll-tail, because it'd just look like a long schlong.

Based on a photo I took on my phone in 2023. Didn't spend as much time on this one as the others - just a little over an hour. I've been asked to illustrate a children's book, and I've been neglecting doing that for a while because of burnout, so I should probably get back to the book now.

Oh, and the prompt list I use is this one:

Introducing, the elusive, the loyal, Knave of Hearts!

This is certainly a different take on the classic character, having spun Junebug into this lawful evil dark knight serving under the Queen of Hearts iron fist, I thought it suiting she'd much less steal her tarts as she'd so much as like to cut out hearts and serve them to her royal highness on a golden platter.

Her design is heavily inspired by Tim Burtons Knave of Hearts in the Alice live action, considering I could hardly find any other source material to draw inspiration from, besides Liz Brazwells "Unbirthday" where the Knave is mentioned sparingly (and by the way, it took me forever to find my copy of that book, in spite of it being my absolute favorite, to a point where I was actually spiraling because I was convinced I dreamt up ever owning a copy. It was in my tote bag.)

I have the feeling she acts as a pseudo general to the gummy gang, often reeling them in on their antics, and more than she'd prefer, enduring the brunt of the Queens blame when her tarts go missing under "uncertain circumstances"

Here's the concept work I've done for her design. In the official rendering, I had tried so hard to mimic endomentendo's style of clean thick line work while also appearing effortless and storybook esque, almost appearing to be illustrated with chalk- but I couldn't cut it. I couldn't do it. I made it look hideous and disjointed and could only salvage what remained with my typical thin hatching detail.

With the sketches in blue, you can just about see where my sanity took a nose dive down the rabbit hole, the mental decline palpable with each hour I worked on this project, uninterrupted. It took an all nighter and SEVERAL obscure horror analysis on YouTube, but I present to you, the finished product, having sucked a wopping 13 hours and 53 minutes from my life span.

Please don't cook me in the comments for her uneven knee sizes and the essay I wrote accompanying this challenge.

Kaijune (/junebug?) day 2. Very disproportionate, but I'm not redoing it. I've got to work on other things.😵 I angled the photo to try to intentionally warp and correct the proportions. This doodle was also a test of Copic Sketch atop Stabilo. Only the purple hue bled. Maybe I should get the Copic Multiliner pens with color inks.  Slightly modified version of an old OC creature design.

First post of Junebug, and it’s a classic: Centiskorch!

For the Junebug art challenge this year, I decided to pivot and draw bug-type Pokémon for the month. As a bug-lover in real life, this typing has many of my faves, and I figured it’d be fun to pay tribute to some of them! It’s also a nice way to introduce y’all to a simpler, more cutesy art style that I enjoy drawing in, hehe ^^

I know, I know. I wanted to post my art here before but had exams and couldn’t draw too often. Now when they have ended, I can post something. Plus it’s not just something little, it’s much more interesting. I’ve always wanted to participate in some sort of art challenge but couldn’t quite figure which I should choose. So I’ve chosen junebug challenge. Basically I will draw humanoid version of some bug. Hope it will be fun. Also sometimes I will post something besides art because I have many hobbies

Hi! I was wondering what monster challenges you knew of for the months - like faebruary, mermay, etc.?

Hey there, and sure thing! So there is already an exophilia list that @sugary-mystery put together here! (And I’ll reblog for good measure!) In addition to sugary’s list, here are a few others that, while not purely monster themed, evoke content that borders monsters, such as fantasy or folklore. I love seeing and collecting art themed challenges. Going through these tags on social media is generally a delight, and highly inspiring! **If there isn’t a link, I’m having trouble finding the origin of the tag, in which case I will edit when I find it, or if someone pops in to tell me!

January I know Clawnuary is on sugary’s list, but otherwise I haven’t seen much for January challenges/prompts.

February Februfairy, Faebruary, Februfae, Feevrier ; fairies and Fae of all kinds! I’ve seen more variants on the tag, but the main thing is Fae in February

March March of Robots ; robots, androids (was originally another October art variant, but moved over to March!) Magical March ; magical girl themed! But lbh, who says you can’t have monstery-magical girls??

April AdventureApril ; fantasy character designs! April Colors ; art and color theme, but can lend to writing (and is put out by Faunwood, an artist who draws a lot of creature cute/eerie art)

May Mermay ; merfolk and sea people of all kinds Monstrous May ; I did this last year and took asks for prompts! There was never a hard list though MythicMay ; mythology! monsters!

June Junicorn ; Unicorns, though I’ve seen people spread into all kind of single horned beings, as well as a more widely equine-fantasy focus such as centaurs, kelpies etc JuneBug ; Bug oriented! I’ve seen various artists use it on twitter and instagram JuneFae ; Another art heavy month used on various social media, along the same lines as Faebruary

July This is another one that’s kind of empty when it comes to challenges! 

August Taurgust ; centaurs, taurens, -taur beings! Smaugust ; as in Smaug, as in dragons! 

September Swordtember ; I absolutely salivated over the gorgeous art for this tag this year (but enchanted swords, weapons, mimics etc - this could well include all of those!)

October Elftober ; various! Orctober ; various! Witchtober ; various! Monster-Mix Challenge Monstertober Strangetober 

November Necrovember ; undead, vamps, ghouls and the like Folktale Week ; a single week of prompts featuring fantasy/folklore oriented ideas

December Demoncember ; this and a handful of other demon-y month titles came from @avedavice after a convo we had on twitter! There isn’t a prompt list though Christmas Monsters ; various monster prompts dELFcember ; elves!!

More vague, idle thoughts of my own because I love alliteration, rhymes and silly themes: Mothful March or Mothful May July Fly (Flying July? Fly July?? flying creatures!! Or heck, maybe flies),  Gargo-ly (Gargoyles!!! or, oof, does that look too much like gargle??), sept makes me think of septogram which makes me think of summoning circles so September Summons?  Jotunnuary! Norse giants!!

Welp. Hopefully I didn’t overdo things, and you can find something that suits your fancy!
