This is #justinhowell He was hit in the head by a non- lethal projectile aka "rubber bullet". Medics in the protest crowd were trying to help him and were too fired upon by Austin police. The medics were white. The depth of this the paramilitarization and brutality of these cops who use the badge as shields of terrorism instead of shields of service. It makes those who seek to bring honor to the duty a stain they are not able to rub off. Last night I had a conversation with my 8-year-old daughter that for some unknown reason I was waiting to have until she was older.

I told her about #GeorgeFloyd, #BreonnaTaylor and #JustinHowell. I told her about slavery, oppression, the history of this country and exactly what’s happening today

We talked about what systemic racism is, how it happened and why it’s still happening. I told her about the police, the President, the riots and the fear that every black person has to live in each day (as much as any white woman could) giving examples, stories, videos, pictures, everything.

I told her all I knew. .

At the end of the conversation my daughter just looked at me and kept asking why....why would someone think less of anyone else based solely on the color of their skin?

I didn’t have an answer. I still don’t.

But I did learn this:

If we keep waiting to have these conversations with our kids; if we keep pretending that by excluding them from the conversation we’re somehow protecting them, then we’re a part of the problem.

So yeah, show your support how you can, #BlackOut or speak out, solidarity in spirit is important too, but understand that silence is ONLY appropriate AFTER you’ve had the uncomfortable conversations. Let your actions speak louder than symbols. Raise your children to be different, to fight back, to be loud and to not just disapprove of racism, but to ACTIVELY destroy it.

Then and ONLY then, take your silence, but spend that silence learning and listening. Educate yourself so that the next time you have this conversation, you have even more knowledge and perspective to share.
