I believe that aesthetic practices have the power to build resilience & act as resistance to the status quo, thereby enacting an anticolonial practice through cultural production.⠀ ⠀ I have exhibited and performed my work internationally & my writing in English, French & Kreol has appeared in publications both online and in print. ten years ago, i graduated from this MA program (then called Theory, Culture and Politics). i was broke, in debt, traumatized (but didn't have access to such language to name this at the time), thoroughly disillusioned with north-american academia. and here we are, exactly 10 years since i defended my thesis, as a grassroots self- and community-taught educator, artist, facilitator, writer, going back to my alumni as a guest speaker. if you want to join, i have put a link in the bio. "Since graduating from the Theory, Culture and Politics MA program at Trent University in 2011, Kama La Mackerel has gone on to establish themselves as a leading multidisciplinary artist and writer in Canada. In this talk, they look over their body of artistic work of the past decade, which spans from performance, poetry, photography, the moving image to digital art and literary translation, to offer a theoretical framework in which they ground their aesthetics and politics. At once a performance lecture and a studio visit, this talk will delve into the following questions: Is a decolonial enunciation possible at all in a racialized body that bears the weight of colonial history? What are the strategies of selfhood that a trans artist can deploy to catalyze new signs of identity and innovative sites of collaboration and contestation? [la version FR suit]⠀ ⠀ “there is no P. just TSD.”⠀ ⠀ In this performance, Kama La Mackerel explores the trope of the “crazy Black trans woman” as a continued state of being that exists between truth & punishment. Juxtaposing instances of freedom (“being your true self”) with punishment (“being punished for being your true self”), the artist addresses trans misogynist violence as it is condoned in all spheres of society. At once textual, textural and performative, interweaving poetry, storytelling and body movement, this performance not only exposes the constant state of crazyness that trans feminine individuals are forced to inhabit, but it also demands that the audience interrogate themselves about their own positions in upholding the boundaries of this state.⠀ ⠀ June 6, 5pm at @centre_des_arts_visuels for the opening of In/Visible: Body as Reflective Site⠀ ⠀ ** // ** // ** // **⠀ ⠀ “il n’y a pas de post dans ce syndrome de stress post-traumatique”⠀ ⠀ Dans cette performance, Kama La Mackerel explore le stéréotype de « la femme noire transfolle » comme un état d’être perpétuel qui existe entre la vérité et le châtiment. En juxtaposant les instances de liberté (soit « être soi-même») avec le châtiment (soit « être puni·e pour être soi-même »), l’artiste souligne la violence trans misogyne tel qu’elle est cautionnée dans toutes les sphères de la société. INFORMATIONS CONCERNANT L'ACCESSIBILITÉ: Le Café l’Artère est accessible aux personnes à mobilité réduite à travers la rampe extérieure, mais il n’y a pas de porte automatique. Les portes à l'entrée sont de 28" chaque et s'ouvrent sur l'extérieur. Les toilettes sont non-genrées et ont des portes à l'entrée de 32" qui s'ouvrent sur l'intérieur. Chaque salle de bain a des cabines avec des portes de 24" qui s'ouvrent sur l'intérieur. Il n'y a pas de rambarde dans les toilettes.
