speaking to the medicine seller, she said she understood kitagawa’s feelings, which makes me think kitagawa also had a thing for her friend lol like there was absolutely something going on there if she(kitagawa) fell apart after her friend left

only mildly related but i believe karakasa’s next target was probably going to be kame and she was used as bait for it (as something a redditor* mentioned was asa may have sent kame away to protect her rather than the reason kitagawa did, OR lure out karakasa) edit: nvm i remembered wrong it was utayama i believe (due to perhaps resentment within the doll’s umbrella*) or asa (following the logic that awashima and mugitani were both the head housemaids(?) favoured by utayama before asa, although again the end goal was probably to attack utayama)

also when asa was addressing the other maids of the ooku before the birth celebratory ceremony and bowed, kame bowed but nobody else did (which means they didn’t respect asa)

then kame got mad and showed her support for her girl like hell yeah 👏 and asa gained more confidence which i think was sweet

"Where's Sako and Wanijima, Choji?"

"They had some errands to do. Do you know what happened in town, Kame-chan?"

"Hm?"

"Let me tell you about it!"

You were silently listening to their conversation. Eavesdropping from every second their topic changes from one person to another. It was exactly like a dream, skipping from side to side. A different subject like Tomiyama Choji had some sort of distracted mental phase that he couldn't grasp on to.

Tugging onto the sleeves of Togame Jo's Shishitoren jacket, you've tried to catch his attention. Momentarily making him shift his line of sight from Choji to yours, as you were all seated upon the maroon colored chairs of Ori. With Jo being on the middle.

"Oh, what?" He leaned towards your side, his tone utmost tender and understanding. Choji's constant and endless chatter on the background, "What's the matter?"

It was always like this with Togame. Whenever you were with him, there was this sense of puerile needs that he could simply quench to that fantasy. "Can I hold your hand while you talk to Choji?"

Or maybe it was just the fact that you always liked the way he comforts you.

The way he does was gravely gratifying to your love bones. 

"Hm, what's gotten into you?" he'd deeply coaxed, his tone going in waves, entertained by this whole wooing you're trying to bait him with, "---you're being really sweet."

Togame's way of talking was more of a tease as the conversation went on between you both. Yet, despite of his goading, his hand was sluggishly making its way to hold onto yours without even realizing it.

To answer your wishes, of course. He always does.

You couldn't help but stare right back at him, a squint of your eyes asking if he was being serious or not. "Was I not before?"

Jo couldn't help but keep his mouth shut at that. Humming a response that pulled your leg a little. "Hm?"

Because he was actually telling the truth. If anyone was sweeter between the both of you in this relationship---

It was Togame, not you. 

"I...nothing. It's fine, if you don't want to. It's just a hand. It's not like I just want to hold your hand, right? who am I to even ask for that? and what do you mean I'm being sweet? ain't I always---!"

He immediately cut you off, his long, calloused fingers slipping through the spaces of your fingers that rested upon the arm rest of those chairs you three were sitting on.

"Hai, hai." Jo have squeezed your hand lightly, tightening his hold. "Is that all?"

You've shook your head from left to right. A small smile creeping its way when you squinted your eyes back to his clothed arm, the glint in your eyes utterly mischievous and vengeful.

"No?" he smoothly added for you, feeding to your physical necessities that only he could harbor, "What more do you want then?"

"Mehehe." with a giggle, your other hand held onto his arm, gently grasping for once or thrice to pertain to what you wanted, "Your biceps!"

"My what?"

Jo chuckled at your obnoxiousness, the glint in his eyes sparkled from being amused by your demands.

"Funny." he'd continue to look at you from above his sunglasses, his glances eventually skipping from you then to that arm you were lowkey embracing.

"You need an arm to doze off on?"

"Yes. Yours. Gimme!"

"Okay." Togame slouched further against his seat, giving you his arm that you immediately handled and grasped hard for, hugging it like a bolster pillow you had from childhood.

You've sunk more on your seat, appreciating the body warmth that your boyfriend was giving. The physical comfort he was providing and will always offer when it was needed.

Until then, you realized that Choji had been awfully quiet five minutes ago.

"Tinyyyyy-chaaaannnnn!"

Choji had screamed at the top of his lungs, in the middle of the stage. His arms all opened wide as if you were not just seated in the front seats.

"Zzzzzzzzzz."

You've ignored your boyfriend's bestfriend, never batting an eye to give Tomiyama the attention he wanted because you were already darn comfortable, snuggled up to Togame already.

Choji huffed and puffed, glaring in front of you as he walked a few closer above the stage, "STOP PRETENDING! I KNOW YOU'RE AWAKE!"

You've lifted your head up to glare at Choji, getting off the solace of what Jo has provided you with. With a point to him and a frank declare of your words, "Why don't you just talk to Kame-chan instead! I've already let you have him for now!"

Huffing, a sulk came out of your mouth, going back to snuggling against your lover. A deep, stressed sigh leaving you, whispering next to Togame. "Go entertain that hyper, best friend of yours. I can't keep up with him."

With an unused hand, Jo reached for yours. The one already trapped in his, gently caressing the top of your hand, enunciating that sweet, deep voice that tingled and plucked your heart strings.

"But, Choji's asking for you, Tiny-chan."

You've emitted a sound at the back of your throat. Was it a growl? a sulk? weeps of being taken by the solace of your own boyfriend because his bestfriend was being needy of your attention?

You've pulled away from Jo's arm, your nose scrunching by how displeased you appeared to be like. Togame couldn't help but chuckle beneath his chest, knowing damn well he got you again. As much as you hate to admit.

His voice always pressed that coaxing button you had inside.

He'd reach out to gently pat your head. His large palm ruffling your hair as he rubbed with a pat. The heat immediately travelling up your face, adoring how he had touched you so leniently despite of his reputation.

As Shishitoren's second-in-command.

This Togame Jo? being so gentle and soft towards you? even to those he cherished?

It was probably one of the reasons why you would do everything for him.

This was why you knew deep inside, you were in love with him.

"Stop--!" you've held his wrist, whisking away from his touch. "Oh?" you've heard him emit, seeing how his mouth fell into a frown for a bit. Was...it a pout? because you were depriving him of touching you like that?

God, you were going insane. "Alright! Fine! fine! I'm coming, Tomiyama!" you've announced out loud, hearing Choji's jumps echo over the stage, hollering out a cheer or two.

Your face was hot. Scorching hot that an egg was worth to fry on as you quickly stood up your feet. Yet, as you took a step, you've felt Togame's hold on you, still clasped around your fingers.

You've pulled your hand away, trying to escape from his hold, once or twice. His gaze still lingering on you, slowly blinking as he hummed. Appearing to be thinking deep thoughts.

"What do you want in return, Tiny-chan?"

What do you want?

"You owe me a cuddle, Jo."

He'd reluctantly let go, smiling as you strolled to take steps upon the stairs that went on the sides, not before hearing Jo smoothly talk back to you.

"Tell me something I don't do all the time, Darl."

"Carry me. I need to repaint that part!"

Was this guy serious? out of all people?

"I'm the wrong person to ask for that, Tomiyama! I told you! I'm not tall! we're practically in the same height!" you've sent a snide remark, waving him off as you were about to jump down the stage with a grouch, "Go ask, Jou!---oof!"

Until this short, bestfriend of his had to jump on your back all of a sudden, utmost catching you in shock and off guarded.

"Choji!" your boyfriend was quick to butt in. You've heard Togame call him out from afar, "Don't do that."

You were close upon the wide walls, where the Shishitoren logo have been painted. You had no idea why he wanted you there with him but as much as you could decipher, Tomiyama was about to repaint their logo---replacing it with fresh, jet-black paint.

"But, I don't want Kame-chan to! He's too tall!"

"I'm small! You're small! What's the point of all this?!"

You were panting and huffing out deep breaths. Your eyes in saucers from how you were trying to balance the both of you, or more particularly, the short boy above your shoulders. Those thoughts inside your head, regretting how the heck did this happen when you were silently dozing off beside Togame awhile ago.

Is this the repayment of having him as your boyfriend?

"You might hurt her, Choji. Get back down." Jo seemed to have walked closer to the stage, his voice seeming to be near in proximity rather than before. His eyes in pure shock as well from how Choji had never gave it a second thought to use you like how he had with Togame. He was okay with Choji, using him as a ladder. Jo was not stressing out about it since he could handle all of his weight.

But, you? he doubt.

"I'll just help you instead. Come on." Jo tried to persuade him further, planting a hand over the stage as he tried to goad.

"I don't want you to! Come on now, Tiny-chan! Just a bit higher up!"

You couldn't help but groan from his weight, struggling to carry him. But, you were not one to back down. Especially when he was already over your shoulders. It's not like there was a choice anyway. "Hmpf!"

Holding his knees, you waddled closer to the wall, huffing from time to time as you smelt the strong odor of paint beneath you, "This is probably payment for having Togame in my life. I gotta tolerate and deal with all your goddamn shit too."

"You sayin' something down there, Tiny-chan?" Choji was humming out a song as he brushed paint over the worn-out logo---humming like he was strolling on the beach.

"Nothing! nothing! Can you just---?!" you've huffed louder, groaning from feeling the strain of his weight on your back. "---get done with it?!"

By trying to beat off that exasperation you were feeling, you've tried to pull on his reigns, your disbelief running off your mouth and never liking to be used as a ladder to begin with. "Choji, are you eating up a whole buffet or something?!"

Choji had swung his feet from beside you, making you stumble further but not enough to make you both fall as you were quick to catch yourself together.

"Are you calling me fat?!"

Clonks of Togame's wooden sandals pitter-pattered. It seemed like he was marching closer to where you and Choji where.

"CAN YOU---AAAH! JUST FINISH IT UP, TOMIYAMA!" you've loudly pleaded, your back starting to ache from his weight as minutes go by, "HURRY! IF YOU GET AN OUNCE OF PAINT ON MY HAIR, I'M PAINTING YOURS JET BLACK!"

Togame ceased beside you both. Holding Choji behind his back to balance you from beneath, hugely noticing the struggles you were experiencing, sympathizing to your endeavor on entertaining his over-hyper friend. Your toils beginning to worry him when he had also noticed how hard you were sweating now.

Jou looked at you, regretful as he could see you stressing out. Though, your distress was slowly dissipating by how he had offer the sleeves of his jacket, gently patting those sweat away in the most gentle way as possible.

"Choji," he'd calmly called out after patting you sweat-free, "You gotta' get off her, I'll do it instead."

There was no answer from Tomiyama. Just a simple huff.

"Please?" he succeeded on coaxing him further, assessing the situation and trying to get him off your back, "She's not used to carrying heavy stuff behind her---"

"You're also calling me heavy, Kame-chan?"

"Hm, no. No." Togame was quick to shook his head, patting Choji over his shoulder, "I can handle your weight better than she could. Just get off her back---?"

He was cut off from his sentence, never letting him finish. Togame couldn't help but force a smile that Choji couldn't even see through his consistent goading.

That he should get off you right now.

Right, damn now.

"So, you're calling me fat too!"

You couldn't help but have that unhinged expression that says, 'What the hell?' after you've heard him take twists and turns over Togame's words.

Out of the blue, he'd jumped off you in one daft motion. "Oh, fine." he patted his knees with the back of his hand, rushing off the stage with a mischievous grin, "Thank you, Tiny-chan!"

You've raised a hand over your temples, gently massaging them from being bombarded by the smell of paint, the stress of Choji's weight on your back that you couldn't help but speak out your complains.

"He's really a handful,"

"Sorry, Darl." Jo was guilty, looking like a kicked puppy. You've skimmed his features and saw him anxiously scratching the side of his face. A level of culpability drawn in his features that say he was held to blame for this one.

"I didn't expect him to do that. He rarely acts like this to you," it was as if it rained down guilt and disappointment to his side. You couldn't help but be in awe for how Jo was acting right now. To think he would...look like this after feeling guilty for asking you to take Choji's offer for what ever he wanted?

Togame was surprised to felt his hand be engulfed by your warmth. You've held his hand, squeezing for a short while to indicate that there was nothing for him to worry about.

"It's alright, okay? let's go back." you nodded with a soft smile.

He'd pulled you with him, down the stairs, continuously holding your hand as he took a swift right turn. You followed him from behind, tightly holding his hand. 

Until Choji began rushing at full speed towards the both of you with a wide toothy smile. His eyes filled with another mischievous glint as he ran with open arms.

"Tiny-chan! Carry me again!"

Togame released his hold on you, quickly swaggering with heavy foot steps as he met with Tomiyama's pace.

Once he had overtaken Togame from his side to rush over you, your boyfriend was utterly fast enough to catch him by the collar of his Shishitoren jacket, pulling him back and away from you.

Tomiyama Choji wondered why he was being held back, your distances almost a meter away when he began to shake out of Jo's hold, complaining why he was being held back out of his own accord.

"Choji, settle down and behave." Togame sighed, swiftly pulling his best friend from you, "Don't...even go for it again. Use mine for all you want, okay? leave her alone."

The calm before the storm?---before I post them spicy shmoots? HAHAHHA

Your added speculation makes me think Asa is technically the symbolic lovechild of Kitagawa and Utayama (This is a Yuri anime I just know it)

I mean Utayama wanted to make Asa her successor in her bio that I read so Yeahhh, lady has certain deja vu from Asa with how similar she is to Kitagawa

Utayama liked the outspoken behavior of Asa where she even questions the highest authority in her introduction to the Ooku and Utayama as a whole. Utayama has shown multiple times that higher authority isn't something she fears, bending to their every whim is the actual scary thing here

Also Utayama and Kitagawa have a-a-a in their names and it is quite confusing for me to remember too lol, keep mixing it up

I just know Awashima is not liking this ship, she's been shown having the hots for Utayama for like half of her screentime so you can't refuse the lesbian allegation ma'am, not really allegation when she's not hiding it, which I understand, Utayama is so hot, it's old woman appreciation for me, I don't think she's old, yeah withered hands but she looks young even for an old hag as she was called

(Silly) I think that Utayama has a competence kink which matured and developed over time.

(Unsilly) For all her competence with the brush, Kitagawa was a soft-spoken, soft-hearted girl at the tender age of 18. She was wholly unready for the difficult decisions she had to make when thrust into a position of power. Prior to Kitagawa's untimely death, I believe Utayama preferred her underlings subservient and obedient. Awashima, who heaps praises and deference upon her, is a prime example of this.

Even at 17, Asa proved on day one in the ooku she was anything but that. It is no wonder Utayama favored her even before taking notice of her impeccable work ethic and brushwork.

It is also no wonder why Awashima was so bitterly jealous of Asa. That Asa was quickly promoted for her competence she can understand and grudgingly accept. What she cannot accept is the blatant breaches of etiquette. Asa got away with openly questioning authority which likely was previously met with severe punishment. And even worse, she thrived despite not throwing away what is precious to her - neither her belongings nor her friendship with the incompetent Kame.

Asa's arrival heralds not only the shifting of power, but also a new paradigm which Awashima cannot hope to thrive in.

Edit: bundling in these asks since they're somewhat related to the one above.

Kitagawa's friend definitely has a narrative parallel to Kame. Indeed, both were incompetent at their jobs and both dismissed from the ooku by their dear friends. But where Kitagawa's friend reacted towards this dismissal with anger (signified by the red mask) at this perceived betrayal, Kame reacted with fear of being separated from Asa.

While Asa was not in a position to dismiss Kame at this time, she eventually did. Kame's reaction once again was not that of anger, but of sorrow. She speaks of her broken dreams of wearing beautiful kimonos and becoming a concubine, but at its heart I think she weeps because Asa no longer wants her by her side. She also leaves on her own two feet instead of having had to be dragged away.

It is Kame and Asa's unashamed and openly expressed care for one another which prevented history from repeating itself.

Got the second story from the Mononoke book translated and edited. Took me a while to get what this one was going for, and I think I still don't necessarily understand all of it even still, but is it really Mononoke if you're not sitting there staring at the screen like 'wtf' for at least some of it and going to need a few exposures before it really sinks in?

Izakaya Kamenoya

I am re-watching the Captain Amagai arc, which I love because it has just a shit-ton of Seireitei slice-of-life worldbuilding. Early in the arc, Kira goes to the bar with Renji and Iba to sob about how his new Third Seat is better than him, and it made me wonder-- do the lieutenants always go to the same bar, or does the anime just make up a new one every time? Episode 172 had a nice shot of the exterior:

I immediately went to Episode 355 (the second New Year's episode), because I'm always thinking about Rukia shotgunning that beer while Renji gazes on lovingly, and it certainly *looks* like same place, but again, maybe that's just a very standard-looking izakaya.

I decided that trying to translate the kanji might help. They're more visible in the first image. The ones on the paper lantern, 酒処 were easy, because they just say izakaya (literally, "alcohol" and "place"). That just supported the idea that this was just some generic bar. For the kanji on the wooden lantern, which appeared to be the same as the ones on the sign above the door, I managed to puzzle out the bottommost one, 屋, which means "shop" or "restaurant." Hmm.

At this point, I was feeling a little stumped, so I went looking for other screen shots.

Other bar scenes I could remember took place in: Episode 179 (Ukitake and Kyouraku try to angle Amagai into a threesome). This had a clearer shot of the sign, and it's definitely the same as the lantern.

Ep 305 (Kira and Hisagi go for drinks after work and run into Unohana having "Ladies' Night" with Soi Fon, the Kotetsu sisters, and Yachiru ????)

And finally, Episode 265 (the end of the Sword Beasts arc, Ladies' Night again, I guess, this time with zanpakutou)

and bingo, they actually translated it for me, this time!!

In, the only one that didn't turn out to take place at Izakaya Kamenoya was from Ep. 303, the first New Year's episode. The SWA holds their holiday luncheon here (the sign says 茶屋, or "tea house") .

It is also not the place where Rukia and Renji announce their engagement in WDKALY, that place is called Safflower, and it's fancier and it's specifically mentioned that it's way classier than everyone's usual digs.

That's neither here nor there, let's get back to Izakaya Kamenoya!

Later on, like when I was 90% of the way through writing this post, I realized there was an earlier shot of the sign in episode 172 that was also translated (which I thought I remembered and then assumed I had hallucinated when I couldn't find it, but it was from a separate trip to bar with Kibune and Kira's shitty subordinates). Conveniently, it's also probably the most readable out of all of them. EDIT: I didn't notice when I pasted this in here, but they translate it as Kamegameya here, which seems like a mistake? B3 suggests they might have read the second character as a repetition (with the k turning into a g, which I don't know all the details of, but I assume it's that thing that happens in Japanese when a word is in the interior of another word and it gets a harder consonant, the same way the s in "sakura" in Senbonzakura becomes a z). Google also tells me that the name of Yugi's grandfather's game shop in Yu-Gi-Oh is called Kame Game, so I wonder if the subtitler here was just working on muscle memory 😂. I'm sticking with Kamenoya, although Turtle Turtle Bar has its own charm)

The three characters in the upper left are 居酒屋, which is just a different way to spell izakaya.

"Kame" was easy to translate, it's the leftmost large character on the sign, 亀. It means "turtle", but the second meaning is "heavy drinker," so I'm guessing this might be a bit of a pun. Unfortunately, googling didn't turn up any further detail on this.

I puzzled a little over the middle character, until I realized that it might be 之, which is an older version of の. Oh, says me, who only speaks the Japanese I picked up from anime, it's Kame no ya, the way all the inns in Kakuriyo end in "ya." It just means "House of the Turtle", or "Turtle's Pub."

Turtle's Pub. Can we just take a moment to reflect on the fact that the lieutenants (and sometimes captains) like to hang out at someplace called Turtle's? I am so charmed by this. I have not been so excited since the time I realized that Renji was wearing the koi hoodie in the Bount Arc OP.

It's possible that it was just named by a guy who has "kame" as part of his name or who likes turtles, or as I said, maybe it's a pun, but there are two other possibilities I thought of:

In line with this post on the naming scheme for the Seireitei Gates, perhaps it's in the north part of the city, and named after Genbu the Black Tortoise-Snake

When I am making up business names in my fanfic, I often like to associate them with the squads they are near-- dragons for stuff near Squad 10, fish for 13, firebirds for things that are more city-wide. It's partially trying to tap into squad solidarity, and partially so people have a clue where your place is located in this stupid maze city. I love the idea of some former captain with a turtle-themed zanpakutou, whose is fondly remembered because someone happened to name a good bar after them.

I looked up that extremely questionable Blood War era Seireitei map, wondering if maybe Squad 3 was near the north gate:

It turns out it is not (assuming the unlabeled squads just go in order), but you know what is? Squad 10. So if Kamenoya is named after the North Gate, I assume everyone drinks there because it's close to Matsumoto.

I want to start writing again, and I realized I have 10 (yikes) unfinished works on ao3. SO, I'm going to list them, how many chapters are left, and a little blurb about each one, and just...idk, reblog/reply/send an ask about which ones sound cool/you want continued? Douglas never tells Giselle about Marcus, and he stays buried under rubble for 3-4 years. Frankie and Dayton take him back to Frankie's house, where Sigourney rebuilts him. Marcus starts going to school with Frankie, becoming part of the family, and yes, in later chapters, eventually other lab rats characters are involved.

Big Time Rush find their way into the house party from the first episode of JONAS season 2. Both bands continue making headlines, clashing and colliding along the way. There will be a version in regular fic form, but this one is told through a series of PopTiger articles.

3. Big Time Peculiars Remaining Chapters: 1 Fandom: Big Time Rush (with elements from Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children)

New residents move into the Palm Woods, and they're...odd, to say the least. The boys of BTR slowly learn more about the ragtag family that just moved in, and then very quickly learn a few things about themselves. The last chapter is a wrapup chapter ensuring it fits between Big Time Dance and Big Time Sparks.

4. Until We Find Our Way Remaining Chapters: ? Fandom: Marvel

A Marvel AU taking inspiration from Julie and the Phantoms. Sharon Carter discovers three WWII ghosts while cleaning out her great aunt Peggy's attic. Between SHIELD's child welfare case regarding the Maximoffs, figuring out the truth behind Steve, Bucky, and Sam's deaths, and a ghostly threat to her new friends...let's just say Sharon's got her work cut out for her.

Pretty much exactly what it says on the tin. Steve's relationship with color throughout his life. (some...I think implied stucky?)

6. Are You Still the Same Soul I Met Under the Bleachers? Remaining Chapters: ? Fandom: Big Time Rush

Kames, fake dating, that's it. (Kidding!) An ultimatum, a family reunion, a little parental homophobia, and a chance reconnection with an old friend leads to James and Kendall scheming together again just like when they were kids. In this AU they never went to LA, and the group sort of drifted apart in halves, but there was never any hard feelings. With fake dating in the tags you can kind of guess where this one's going.

7. If You Had the Chance to Change Your Fate... Remaining Chapters: ? Fandom: Marvel

When the two Hawkeyes encounter a comical, plot convenient foe, Clint is given the chance to redo what happened on Vormir. He sacrifices himself instead of letting Natasha do it. Following the loss, there's healing, as well as a breakthrough regarding Steve's disappearance. The ending is finished, but the middle needs writing still.

8. Not To Be Taken For Him Am I (Beware, Therefore, the Gemini) Remaining Chapters: ? Fandom: Suite Life On Deck

Canon Divergence leading into a Gravity Falls AU (sort of), in which Zack and Cody never participate in Project Gemini and stop talking to each other. Five (?) years later, Zack fakes his death and takes Cody's place in Gravity Falls. Ten years after that, Zack's kids are sent to stay with "Cody". The posted chapter is more of a sneak peak, with the first actual chapters likely being a little heavier before we get into the kids' summer.

9. Jo's Friends & Joe's Brothers: What Kind of Chaos… Remaining Chapters: ? Fandom: Jonas LA/Big Time Rush

When Jo Taylor is in New Zealand filming Chauncey Jackson, Joe Lucas is filming the third Forever April movie on a neighboring lot. The two become friends, resulting in both groups meeting at the Palm Woods after the fact. Kendall's jealousy results in the two bands collaborating on a song, but first they all have to survive the process.
