The Keilens are Fostering

Per Michael's latest IG post, she and Brandon are now foster parents to two boys.

The way they have written about the experience makes me believe that they are being very mindful of the trauma and baggage these kids have. I don't think these boys are going to be social media props. It looks like the Keilens are providing a loving home for these kids, whether that's for a week or months or forever.

(Obviously we don't know what's going on behind the scenes, but. . . IDK. This tiny glimpse isn't setting off any alarm bells for me.)

IDK y'all. I don't have any snark here--I'm genuinely happy for Michael + Brandon. Fostering is a huge decision that not everyone is cut out for. Good for them for taking that step.

Breaking News: A New Keilen grandbaby

They seem to be really invested in being good foster parents. I hope that if the kids are unable to be reunited with their biological family (kids are shown to do better with relatives in general, not just their parents), Michael and Brandon are able to raise them.

How crazy was it to go from 0 to 2 kids?

-m: fun, they’re used to babysitting. But it was hard not knowing what possible special needs the kids would possibly have (given the particular situation). B: the 3 yo is a people person and loves being with them, also bottle feeding an infant through the night and being sleep deprived

What was hardest/easiest?

-M: so many appointments was hard, but she still thinks it was a good thing everything was so thorough. Loving them is easy

Did you get help from friends/family getting stuff?

-M: the outpour of support was overwhelming, even though the kids placement was really sudden. There was even a virtual baby shower (to which I must say ????!!?)

Any possible of adopting the kids?

-M: they would like ”a permanent family” but everything is unknown and authorities are thinking foremost of what’s best for the kids. B: since they love the kids so much it’s hard to even think about it, because they don’t want to think about losing them and their bio family’s issues could theoretically be solved. They are trying to love without being possessive (which I thought was a really lovely stance to take)

Have you got the house set up? Room tour?

-M: yes, but no room tour because of the kids privacy (yay!)

Favorite thing about a big family?

-M: incredible support from a lot of people

Are the kids siblings?

-M: yes

Is baby sleeping though the night?

-M: baby was fostered at birth so no def not

Another q about adoption

-M: it’s not on the table rn, they are just loving every day they have them

Any new books from Brandon?

-B: has one in the works, but really busy rn given everything

Tips to feel at ease with fostering?

-M: they are a little too green to give advice, but she’s been reading a lot of stories from (now adult) foster kids and trying to do what they thought was good and not do what they thought was bad

Managing the trauma that comes along with fostering?

-M: a person in their life who was fostered (Whitney?) has been a good mentor and help. They’ve taken classes and read books. B: their toddler has improved greatly since they’ve had him

Why didn’t they think they were qualified to foster?

-M: they had been pursuing private adoption and had been told more would be required from foster parents (since an adopted newborn would likely be less traumatized than a fostered older kid)

Are you going to continue the adoption process that you had started?

-M: they are focused on they kids in their home right now. Having the kids is like heaven, but it’s heartbreaking about their past experiences. B: they aren’t thinking about anything other than today and enjoying the kids, giving them the love they need.

And then they talked a bit more about honoring the kids privacy and I respect that.

Let's exercise some caution before giving the Keilens too much credit for protecting the kids privacy. They're literally obligated by law to not post them on social media. Foster kids and kids still going through the adoption process can't be shared on public social media accounts. Michael has zero problems plastering her nieces and nephews all over social media so I have no doubt she would do the same with hers if she was able to.

I know. Like I said in my original comment, it seems like they’re following the rules and moving toward the right steps but, that could always be a facade for social media, obviously I don’t know them in real life. I just wanted to acknowledge that because in my experience fundies tend to follow the lines of “rules for thee, not for me” so it’s nice to see them seemingly following the rules (laws). Do I think strict fundamentalists should be allowed to be foster parents? No, not really. Do I hope those kids can go home to their family, absolutely. The bar is hell with fundies, if the kids have to be in this situation, acknowledging the bare minimum effort sometimes needs to be done in order to potentially keep that door open so that fundies keep educating themselves on that subject. Obviously Michael and Brandon don’t see this, they don’t care what I think but, I want to hope they continue to do “better” for the sake of the boys in their care.

Was ist es, das unterhalb der Schwelle des Rechts liegt und dennoch, widerständig und insistierend, dabei kooperiert, Recht wahrzunehmen?

Weil das die leitende Frage derjenigen besonderen Kulturtechnikforschung ist, die ich betreibe, kann man antworten: das sind juridische Kulturtechniken.

DieKulturtechnik, die Recht wahrnimmt oder Recht wahrnehmen lässt, ohne exklusiv, einzigartig, dem Recht eigen oder aber systematisch Recht zu sein und die auch weder die Autonomie noch die Ausdifferenzierung des Rechts trägt, die ist juridische Kulturtechnik.

Man muss auch dann nicht von juristischer Methode sprechen, wenn beides verwechselbar und austauschbar ist. Logisches Schließen mit seinen scholastischer raffniertes Schreib- und Mnemotechnik, seinen Diagrammen und ramistisches Tabellen ist zwar auch juristische Methode, ist auch mit der Geschichte der Jurisprudenz und Rechtswissenschaft verbunden, muss aber nicht für die Anwendung oder Auslegung von Gesetzen angewendet werden, kann auch anders verwendet werden. Rhetorik, Ars, Hermeneutik, Logik, Statistik, Mathematik, Poetik und schließlich Ästhetik sind Namen für Disziplinen, die viele juridische Kulturtechniken und teils auch juristische Methoden sammeln. Die rhetorischen Institutionen, Manuale, wie besonders umfangreich Quintilians Text, lehren solche Techniken in der Antike. Weil sie instituieren, richten sie ein, ein, an und ab. Man kann diese Disziplinen mit einem Verdacht auf Manipulation begleiten, werden sie auch seit Anfang an. Sie fabrizieren Menschen, etwa den abendländischen Menschen, von dem Pierre Legendre spricht. Das ist bewunderungswürdig und kritikwürdig. Sie machen machen: Vico bewundert zum Beispiel die Manipulation, das Gemachte.

In der Kulturtechnikforschung hat Horst Bredekamp an der Modellierung von Keilen vorgeführt, welche Vorteile Kulturtechniken mit ihren Manipulationen, ihren Ab-, An-, Aus- und Einrichtungen bieten können. Thomas Vesting gibt den falschen Eindruck, wenn er vorschlägt, die Kulturtechnikforschung einseitig zu verstehen. Man kann sie einseitig verstehen, muss sie aber nicht einseitig verstehen. Wie Vesting auf die Idee kommt, lässt sich rationalisieren, aber er müsste das übernehmen, weil das einen Kommentar in eigener Sache betrifft.

In den literarischen Referenzen der Moderne knüpft die Kulturtechnikforschung u.a. an die Arbeiten von Leroi-Gourhan an, der mit seinen Arbeiten zur Geschichte der Hand und der Handhabung, des Händeln und Handelns mit der Hand auch einen Beitrag dazu geleistet hat, den Menschen und seine Gesellschaft als etwas zu behandeln, was von Natur aus artifiziell und phantasiebegabt operiert und seine Existenz der Existenz eines Apparates verbunden ist. Aby Warburg geht, im 19. Jahrhundert, dem nach, was später zum Beispiel als Erweiterung oder Ausbau des menschliches Körpers, etwa als Prothesenthese diskutiert wird, startend nach Warburg beim Horn (Fingernagel und Haar) u.a. am Begriff der Tracht und des Schmucks. Er assoziiert beide Begriffe nach Vorbildern, die aus rhetorischen Institutionen stammen könnten, nämlich mit Vorstellungen des Dezenten, des Musters, des Tuches sowie mit der Vorstellungen eines Schwankens (Wallen?), wie es in rhetorischen Institutionen dann auch auf psychologische und affektive Höhen und Tiefen bezogen wird. Hier wird das Verhältnis zwischen sublimen Affekten und subtilen Affekten bereits als melancholisches Verhältnis denkbar. Aus einer älteren Beschäftigung mit Händen und Manipulation wird er in einem Gespräch, das er 1896 mit dem Rechtsvergleicher Sally George Melchior führt, auf den Begriff der mancipatio aufmerksam. Gaius nennt diese mancipatio ein Bild, legt nahe, dass dort etwas simuliert und angetäuscht, aber eben auch effektiv ausgetauscht wird. Die mancipatio manipuliert den Sklavenhandel, sie reguliert ihn.

Man könnte auch sagen: das, was Recht wahrnimmt ist das, was an der ars boni et aequi, der Kunst der Gutmachtung, Vergütung, der Veredelung sowie des Passenden, Passierenden oder Durchgehenden nicht unbedingt Recht, aber unbedingt Kunst sein soll. Das kann gleichzeitig, weil diese Kunst dem Recht nicht exklusiv eigen ist, eine Kunst des Handelns, Händelns und der Handhabung sein, sogar eine Kunst der Manipulation, sogar der Mimesis et Cie (Roger Caillois). Dem deutschen Staatsrechtslehrer könnten die Haare zu Berge stehen. Soviel kann das sein und er will doch nur wissen, ob da jemand den Staat oder die Gesellschaft höher schätzt und ob er Internetkonzerne regulieren oder nicht regulieren will, der Rest verwirrt ihn eher.

Ab einem gewissen Zeitpunkt, sagt man so, habe der Begriff der Kultur seinen Genitiv verloren. Wenn das der Fall: Ich hänge den Begriff der Kultur wieder an Begriffe des Rechts an, hake damit ein und nach. Das gilt auch für Begriffe der Technik. Kunst verstehe ich in dem Zusammenhang also nicht als etwas, das ein ausdifferenziertes System wäre. Die Kunst verstehe ich als etwas, das kooperiert, widerständig und insistierend. Ich will damit nicht die nächste documenta würdigen müssen oder aber die Malerei von Daniel Richter. Die Geschichte und Theorie juridischer Kulturtechniken ist nichts Allgemeines. Sie taugt nicht für Gesellschaft im Ganzen und Globalen, taugt weder für die Totalität von Gesellschaft und Mensch noch für die Vorstellungen der Fragmentierung. Sie taugt für die Vorstellung vaguer und speisender Wesen und Sozietäten, für elliptische, kreisende Technik mit Hemmungen und Schüben, Fällen und Flüchten.

Tallinn

Liebes Logbuch,

heute sind wir direkt nach dem Frühstück nach Tallinn gefahren. Da Du vielleicht mit dem Reisen per Wohnmobil nicht so vertraut bist, folgt eine kurze Erklärung was „direkt nach“ bedeutet. Unter Umständen bedeutet direkt nach dem Aufstehen, dass man noch das Geschirr des Abendessens vom Vortag spülen muss, weil man nach zwei Ameisenbissen unterhalb der Gürtellinie keine Lust mehr dazu hatte. Was bedeuten würde, dass man entweder Wasser im Kessel auf dem Gasherd erhitzen, alternativ die Therme einschalten und einige Zeit auf Warmwasser warten müsste. Es könnte bedeuten, dass man alle Fenster schließen, das auf der Fläche vor dem WoMo verstreute Zeug einsammeln und verstauen, den Wohnbereich aufräumen, Müll weg bringen und Öl kontrollieren müsste. Es könnte bedeuten, dass, wenn alle abfahrbereit mit motivierten Mienen und angelassenem Motor im Führerhaus sitzen, jemandem einfällt: Wir stehen auf den Keilen [zum Ausgleich von Unebenheiten im Boden], die beifahrende Person meistens jedoch ohne geeignetes Schuhwerk im Sitz herumlümmelt, die fahrende Person aber auch nicht gleichzeitig von den Keilen fahren und diese in der „Garage“ verstauen kann - was die Abfahrt erneut verschiebt. „Kurz nach dem Frühstck“ aufzubrechen kann am Ende bedeuten, dass zwischen dem Erwachen und der Abfahrt sieben Stunden liegen, obwohl Duschen und Frühstück nur eine in Anspruch nehmen.

Heute fuhren wir direkt nach dem Frühstück nach Tallinn, die Fahrtzeit betrug 90 Minuten und wir waren schon um 14 Uhr da.

Von Wohnmobilisten erfuhren wir am Vortag noch zusätzliche Tipps für Parkplätze in Tallinn, die unserer Fahrzeuggröße gerecht werden. Es passiert recht häufig, dass man nur eben freundlich grüßt und plötzlich steht man zwanzig Minuten am WoMo von Stefan und seiner Frau aus Bayern. Und dann wird gefachsimpelt über Doppelachsen, die Autobahnmaut in Polen und Österreich, die schönsten Orte und eben auch die praktischsten Stellplätze in Großstädten. Stefans Frau wusste zu berichten: „Der Parkplatz [in Tallinn] ist super, aber kurz vor dem Ziel dachten wir noch: Was ist das denn für eine enge Gasse!?“.

Und jetzt rate mal, liebes Logbuch, wer 300 Meter vor dem Ziel in dieser engen Gasse stecken blieb, weder vor noch zurück konnte? Nicht wir, liebes Logbuch! Ein ungelenker Reisebuss blieb in der engen Kurve hängen, was durch einen Falschparker noch verschlimmert wurde. Irgendein Aasgesicht hatte seinen Škoda im absoluten Halteverbot geparkt, obwohl gleich zwei große und komfortable Parkplätze um die Ecke zur Verfügung standen. Annika sprang auf die Kreuzung und winkte den Busfahrer raus, der somit die Kehrtwende schaffte.

Nachdem der Bus die Bahn freigemacht und der Stau sich aufgelöst hatte, erreichten wir den angestrebten Parkplatz. Im Gelato Ladies versorgten wir uns mit Kaffee und Minz-Avocado-Limette-Eiscreme und schlenderten in die Altstadt von Tallinn.

Im Indischen Restaurant Elevant probierten wir äußerst schmackhaftes „moose kabab“.

Bei einer zweistündigen Stadttour zu Fuß durch die Altstadt erfuhren wir allerhand über Tallinn. Das Wetter blieb glücklicherweise freundlich und wir kamen ohne größere Zwischenfälle ins Ziel.

Nach der Stadtführung mussten wir uns zunächst einmal mit einem Craft Bier im Beer House stärken.

Im „Mittelalter“-Restaurant Olde Hanse verputzten wir ein leckeres Abendessen. Ob die Speisen authentisch mittelalterlich sind, weiß natürlich kein Mensch. Zumindest die Hygiene Standards waren nicht authentisch mittelalterlich, was mir sehr recht war. Die Barden und Kellner trugen ulkige Kostüme. Die Mahlzeiten waren sehr speziell gewürzt, auch das Zimt- und das Honigbier schmeckten außergewöhnlich, aber nicht übertrieben anders. Das konnte man sich alles gut schmecken lassen.

Morgen fahren wir zum Nationalpark im Osten Estlands. Wir hoffen auf Bärensichtungen!
