Dust: hard rock outfit formed in 1969 that released two albums (The firs one is HERE) Every single band member stayed in music and achieved success, sort of like a supergroup in reverse. Guitarist/vocalist Richie Wise went on to become a producer and engineer working with Kiss and produced records for Kama Sutra. Bassist Kenny Aaronson has played with Bob Dylan, Rick Derringer, Billy Idol and many others. Marc Bell went on to play drums with Wayne County and Richard Hell. He joined The Ramones in 1978 and thus became Marky Ramone.

They say the day is lonely so totally blue it calls out for us only but mainly for you. A walk in the soft rain alone a walk and then everything's gone.

Dust: Dust (1971)
It’s funny that today I sit here wondering whether Dust require a lengthy introduction when, just a few years ago, this New York City power trio lay virtually forgotten in the mists of classic rock, right alongside Bang, Sir Lord Baltimore, and so many other commercially unsuccessful ‘70s hard rock bands.
Well, we can all thank the World Wide Web and YouTube for propitiating those of us too young to have been there with enlightening stories such as Dust’s, whose modest career was dwarfed by its musicians’ subsequent exploits.
So, let’s get to that: vocalist/guitarist Richie Wise went on to produce Kiss and other luminaries with Dust lyricist Kenny Kerner, bassist Kenny Aaronson became an in-demand session player for everyone from Bob Dylan to Hall & Oates to Billy Idol, and drummer Marc Bell found fame with Richard Hell & the Voidoids and even more as Marky Ramone.
As for their music, Dust had the musical tools for much more than just hard rock, as is revealed by the Hendrix-ian slide guitar overkill of “Stone Woman,” the country-blues chill of “Goin’ Easy,” the psychedelic flange of “Often Shadows Felt,” and blistering jazz fusion of “Loose Goose.”
But don’t let any of this eclecticism dissuade you headbangers, because Dust grooved like motherfuckers on the classier than it sounds “Chasin’ Ladies,” reached full-blown metallic fury on “Love Me Hard,” and delivered ten, mesmerizing minutes of bombastic bolero on the climactic “From a Dry Camel.”
So, whether you needed the introduction to begin with, or have known about Dust far longer than I have, spend some time with this LP today and the decades will fall away to the primordial soup of proto-metal’s heyday.
p.s. -- I celebrated Dust in this short-lived Throwback Thursday column for Metal Injection.
p.p.s. -- And may I recommend this interview with Richie Wise, which explains how Dust’s two LPs came to be reissued by Sony Legacy a few years ago thanks to the efforts of my friend Mark Neuman, with whom I was then editing an early version of Marky Ramone’s autobiography.
More Dust: Hard Attack.
