Kernūn, Lord of the Wood

I’m back from my art hiatus, with some Witcher content! Leshens are so cool, expect some more . . . I recently completed the Lord of the Wood quest in Velen and thought I’d base a fancy-looking leshen off of Kernun, who Geralt encounters in the forest. More art coming soon! ;D

Aeons: Vessels of the Will of the One

Have you not heard those prophecies yet? I’m sorry. Seers often tell of the coming of people who are Vessels for the Will of the One. They are called ‘Aeons.’

While many on the world of Ymir have come to understand that the gods who have long ruled over them are false, there are some who still hold faith in some higher power. As such, several “cults” have formed on the world of Ymir, and inquisitors loyal to the gods hunt all these heretical sects.

The sect that has proven the most resilient in the face of such persecution is The Cult of the One, or, as they prefer to be called, the Path of the One (or, in some circles, the Way of the One). These people believe in a single deity who is above the false gods, and who will one day judge the pantheon of Empyrean for all the evil they’ve done. Seers are usually the authors of the holy texts of this faith, and many of those holy texts speak of encounters with the mysterious beings called “Aeons.”

Aeons have usually appeared to seers but have also made themselves known to various truth-seeking individuals, coaxing them onto the Path of the One. Aeons have demonstrated magical abilities that even the greatest casters of Ymir cannot replicate. They often appear out of nowhere and vanish just as suddenly. They know things that, even with magic, they should not be able to know. They can pause time itself to teach important lessons to lost and weary souls.

Each Aeon clings to a certain color. Animus, the Aeon in Red, for example, wears a long red coat and has matching hair and eyes. The Aeons claim to be “Vessels for the Will of the One,” and when they act, they usually do so to protect those on the Path. Yet, for all their power, their interference in the affairs of the people of Ymir is minimal.

This has led skeptics who scoff at the One to say that the Aeons are nothing more than charlatans who know more about magic than most people. Just more false gods looking for pious servants. The Aeons usually counter this by saying the reason for their relative non-involvement is because they have no intention of becoming tyrants, and if they were to interfere too much, that would surely become their path.

At this time in Ymir’s history, not all of the Aeons have been revealed. Here are those who are currently known:

The Aeon in Red

Animus first appeared during the Second Age. He appears as a young man wearing a long, red coat with matching hair and eyes on a pale, freckled face. He usually carries with him a staff that looks like a twisted double helix. Animus is said to embody justice.

The Aeon in Green

Like Animus, Ra’hamim first appeared in the Second Age. Hunters described following their game deep into the woods and finding in a lone grove a woman who was one with a gathering of banyan trees. She demonstrated a deep connection with the forest itself, as well as with all plants. Time and again, she has guided the lost out of danger. She is said to embody mercy.

The Aeon in Blue

The first records of Eidolon’s existence come from the Third Age. The Aeon in Blue typically appears wearing a vibrant, blue robe, with hair, eyes, and skin to match. An azure mist often accompanies him, and he always floats just inches off the ground. According to the holy texts of the Path, the first encounter with Eidolon happened in an ancient adonium mine called “The Godsthroat.” For a time, Eidolon was claiming to be a god, Enlil the All-Father reborn. That was, until the Aeon in Red arrived and humbled him. After that, he joined the ranks of the Aeons, and built the city of Civitas Dei as a safe haven for truly gentle, peaceful souls. He is said to embody knowledge.

The Aeon in Black

Sonia is the most recent Aeon to appear, first making herself known in the Fourth Age. She appears as a little girl with black hair wearing an equally black dress. Often, she is seen playing with dolls, though the way she speaks suggests wisdom far beyond that of a child. Those who’ve encountered her have described the experience as “unsettling,” “frightening,” and sometimes “harrowing.” She is said to embody remorse.

The Aeon in White

Currently, her name is unknown, but some have taken to calling her “The Starlit Empress” or “The Future Queen.” Seers have had encounters with the Aeon in White since the First Age, but most sages of the One teach that she is yet to be born. Some sages have also suggested that when the prophesied Third Genesis comes to pass, the Aeon in White will be the ruler of all Ymir, a benevolent monarch installed by the One. Just what virtue she embodies is unknown, though some have suggested wisdom, purpose, or compassion.

As the story of the world of Ymir continues to unfold, we will surely learn more about the Aeons, the One, and the promised future they all seek.

Thormundar - Kernun, the Two-Faced God

"All of Kormun know the legend of Kernun, the eldest of the Four Siblings, but the story of his youth, and the mark on his chest have been long lost to the ages."

The last of a series of four illustrations (the first of which I finished in early 2021) that I finally finished in early 2022, I first depicted Kernun in 2013 as a depiction of Cernunnos, the deer-antlered Celtic god, back when I hadn't thought to put Thormundar together. I revisited the character eventually when I designed the rest of his siblings in 2019 and ironed out the details of his outfit and look.

As for the figure in the background of this piece, it's a significant Thormundar thing that I won't reveal here...

Brother to Herneus and Gwynnad, and embodiment of summer, Kernun is the unbridled strength of the forest.

Do forgive me for the more esoteric question this time, but it has been bouncing around in my head for sometime now. One of my favorite tropes is the psychic head space, that when someone with mind reading abilities enter deeply into another's mind that they enter a psychic space that represents that person. Such as someone who lived their entire life in the military their psychic head space take the form of the army base they lived on, or someone with a very reserved personally head space might be a a tightly back cube with containers for all their thoughts and memories. The best example of this would be the Psychonauts games. So my question is what dose your ocs psychic head space look like?

Oh, no worries; this isn’t the weirdest thing people have asked me. Hmmm, I could do a set of OCs who actually have physically manifested psychic realms (which neatly coincides with my most recent painting of one of them!).

The Fauns of Thormundar are semi-divine beings, being the children of Oghamos, the God of Nature, and are able to travel between the material and immaterial realms. The most notable of them, the four seasonal siblings of Kormun, have created pocket realms in the conceptual void that are each based on their psyche.

Kernun’s realm, the Circle, is simply a recreation of the Utangard Forest, which borders the lands of Kormun, except that the forest stretches to all corners of the realm. It is a place of eternal green, with verdant swathes of growth and trees that tower over others.

Herneus��� realm, the Glade, is largely similar to the Circle, except it is a realm in perpetual autumn. Vegetation grows unchecked, forming a myriad of snaking passages that spell trouble for those targeted by the God of the Hunt. There is only a single structure in the realm, which also serves as Herneus’ home: a towering home built into a giant oak tree, its facade a gigantic deer’s skull with twin antlers made of the oak’s branches growing through the skull. 

Gwynnad’s realm, the Rime, is a frozen and wintry forest, a fitting realm of the God of Death. The trees are bare, with snow weighing on the boughs and icicles hanging from branches as though they were the teeth of demons. great shards of ice jut from the snowy ground, and a pervasive fog hangs around the air, freezing flesh and chilling bones. Stone ruins, crumbled by time, dot the landscape, although in the centre of Gywnnad’s realm lies a great longhouse of wood, stone, and ice, where he makes his home.

The most strikingly different of the realms, Orin’s realm of the Garden is a world of flesh and bone, the sky a purulent yellow. There is no vegetation, the closest thing to grass being patches of slick flesh dotted by pustules, veins, and exposed teeth-like bones. Trees of sinew and flesh grow from the fetid meat, hands dumbly grasping for the sky as they crown these trees. In the heart of the Garden, there rises a monolith of flesh that towers over everything else, and in there Orin makes his home.

Thormundar - Herneus of the Autumn

Fall's here, and I figured I wanted to do an autumn piece for some personal work. Trees and forests are a comfort zone topic for me, although the painting of the fallen leaves and the bushes was something new. Herenus herself has been a character that I painted about a year and a half ago too, but I decided to go with a slightly different angle to showcase her more human-looking face, since she doesn't have the more animalistic muzzle her brothers Kernun and Gwynnad possess.
