You think we'll be getting a fully Dark version of Sora in later games that's not something like his Anti Form in KH2 or his Rage Form in KH3? I feel like the series has been foreshadowing that the Darkness is bound to take him eventually at some point later down the line in some significant way.

Ah, so not as a gameplay thing, but as a story thing? Casually I would say not really, but it depends on where exactly this next part of the story is going, I suppose. Though, you're definitely on the money that there is a pattern of representing Sora's Darkness in the series.

KH was through that of his shadow self on Hook's ship and that he turned into an actual Heartless.

KH2 was through Anti-Form.

KHCoded with his Data-Darkside version.

KHDDD with the plot thread of the whole Ventus Nightmare armor.

KH3 with Rage Form.

Probably even more than that. At least KH, Coded, and DDD are much more tied to the story events, but KH2 and 3 are arguably representative of something within the story. KH2 being that of the Nobody and Light/Darkness elements, hence it's link to getting Final Form, and KH3 Rage Form is probably reflective of the events when Kairi gets killed. It's interesting that at least for Anti and Rage Form, even though they're more gameplay than story, Nomura still thinks up premises of its existence in the game:

--There's a form that appears called "Rage Form," which reminds us of the "Anti Form" from KH2. What is the setup behind that?

Nomura: The forms in this title are very different from that of KH2, so we decided to change all the names. Rage does indeed have characteristics that are reminiscent of Anti, but it's basically a separate thing setup wise. Anti is based on Sora getting completely stained in darkness, but Rage doesn't go quite that far. It's based on him going into a rampage state, controlled by feelings of anger. [via KHInsider]

I do like how the writers have never tried to make Sora out to be a pure light. They have no qualms with reminding us that, like most normal people, he has Light and Darkness within him. I'm not sure if we'll get something more than just the representation though, because as a character, I also don't think him having to overcome a complete turn to his Darkness is really a need for his character—that was for someone more like Riku's character arc.

I wouldn't be surprised if we get more representation, maybe another form in the next game, but I don't know about anything significant like a character arc. We do still have the interests of the existences of Darklings, so maybe he'll turn into that next yeah? Haha If he gets one more he'll be eligible for a free sea salt ice cream at this point.

Remember how you said that Sora and Riku's friendship didn't do much for you when Kairi was excluded? I think I kind of see where you're coming from. I remember seeing Data-Sora and Data-Riku hanging out without a Kairi of their own in KHCoded and for some reason it felt off, it felt unbalanced and awkward. The scene where they were hanging by the tree on Destiny Islands without Kairi felt empty. I wonder if it's because I'm used to seeing the three of them as a set, or if it's something else.

“I guess I enjoyed their moment of mutual understanding at the end of kh1 when Riku turns over a new leaf, their reunion and teamwork at the end of kh2, and their cute moments together as toddlers in bbs. But I don't know, as much as I was pleasantly surprised by khcoded, I was more interested in Data-Sora's relationship with Mickey, Donald, and Goofy, as well as with Data-Roxas. But maybe it's cause most of Data-Sora and Data-Riku's conversations with one another were exposition, IIRC.”

I guess my issue with Kairi being left out of the Sora and Riku friendship, is that I’ve put myself into her shoes for fourteen years--unlike any of her writers except for Amano, it would seem, and perhaps Nojima--in trying to defend her right to exist and for more content about her... so when Kairi’s left out, I felt hurt for her for her.

And it just... hits me the wrong way, because Kairi being left out and replaced so easily (like, Sora and Riku being at the paopu tree without her, no problem--even though golden game KHI showed that there was at least one time even back then that they were there without Kairi. But I don’t think that helps the problem, but exasperates it), like with how suddenly it’s Terra who made Riku want to see other worlds and not just Kairi--and knowing Nomura, I wouldn’t even be surprised if it was a total retcon and we’re supposed to believe it was Terra and not just Kairi off--just shows to me how much he seems to hate her, tbh. And as a feminist, that ruffles my feathers--that you can treat the girl who who was supposed to be the heroine of this series so dirty.

Also, at this point, I feel Sora and Riku’s conversations really add nothing to the conversation. KHI-KHII were great. But at this point, they’re just a retread of the same thing over and over again, like “Sora, I was such a fool for giving into the darkness. How could you ever forgive me?” “Oh come on, Riku! That wasn’t really you! You’re being way too hard on yourself! Look at all the good you’ve done” “...Thanks, Sora.” I also feel their conversations or talks about each other in DDD, lended themselves to “You’re the best”, “No, you’re the best”, “No, you’re the best”... and while I don’t see them as a couple at all, it did feel like annoying new couple talk, that you want to push both parties off a cliff for. Riveting stuff here, I tell you what. And now in KHIII, a lot of it was Riku hurting Sora’s feelings for not passing the Mark of Mastery:( Riku’s speech to Sora when he pretty much sacrificed himself for him was great, though.

Since they're technically final fantasy...

Kingdom Hearts: Young boy gets isekai'd several times and is such a good boi that one of the most powerful weapons in the universe chose him to whack some dude on the head and save the world.

KHCOM: Young boy finds an enchanted castle that causes early onset alzeimers and has to play a children's card game in order to cure himself.

KH Days: Imperfect hot-topic clone of the young boy gets gaslit into thinking he doesn't have a soul and the only way to get one is to commit war crimes. He makes friends with other frequent hot topic shoppers and finds out one is technically his twin.

KH2: Hot Topic clone boy gets sealed in the Matrix because he posesses his template's lost memories. Said template is the young boy, now a young man, who stayed in cryosleep until they could cure his alzeimers. He wakes up then meets Merlin II who tells him to go save the world again.

KH Birth By Sleep: a mom friend and a confused boy are about to take a test that establishes them as peacekeepers, overseen by Luke Skywalker and Mr Spock, and spectated by a toddler who looks eerily like Hot Topic Clone Boy. The Mom friend passes, and the confused boy has an existential crisis because he failed. Mr Spock does the logical thing and manipulates him into becoming evil. Meanwhile, the Toddler leaves his crib to find out that he has a twin brother who is a dick. Luke Skywalker didn't like that too much so he sent Mom Friend after him.

KHCoded: A king digitizes his royal consultant's diary, and it turns into a simulation to see how much depression and trauma the Young Man can take before he has a breakdown.

KH3D: Merlin II tests the young man and his best friend's readiness to become masters by making them face their gay thoughts.

KH BBS part 2: Mom friend is stuck in Hell, fights 5 different versions of herself, and meets the king who pinky swears he will come back to get her.

KH3: it has been a decade since the pinky swear was made and it leads to complications. The young man who sleeps all the time on the beach is ordered to acquire the power to wake people the fuck up because he was too lost in his gay thoughts to acquire it the first time.

KH MOM: Young man's other friend who we see very little of gets her time to shine, but 90% is a recap of things everyone else went through. 2% is searching her heart to find out where her friend went, because he disappeared from existence after he saved her. The rest of the 8% is her fighting the darkness in her heart while taking the form of the young man, and then finding out he's isekai'd again.
