Charles II . (b. 29 May 1630 – d. 6 February 1685) . Some facts; . 👑 Charles II was king of England, Scotland, & Ireland. He was king of Scotland from 1649 until his deposition in 1651, and king of England, Scotland & Ireland from the 1660 Restoration of the monarchy until his death in 1685. . ◼ Charles was one of the most popular & beloved kings of England, known as the Merry Monarch, in reference to both the liveliness & hedonism of his court & the general relief at the return to normality after over a decade of rule by Cromwell & the Puritans. Charles’s wife, Catherine of Braganza, bore no live children, but Charles acknowledged at least twelve illegitimate children by various mistresses. As a result, in his lifetime he was often nicknamed “Old Rowley”, the name of his favourite racehorse, notable as a stallion . 😯 DID YOU KNOW? . The present Dukes of Buccleuch, Richmond, Grafton & St Albans descend from Charles in unbroken male line. Diana, Princess of Wales, was descended from two of Charles’s illegitimate sons: the Dukes of Grafton & Richmond. Diana’s son, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, second in line to the British throne, is likely to be the first British monarch DESCENDED from Charles II. . . . #Kingcharlesii #charlesii #Kingofengland #Theking #Stuarts #Houseofstuart #Merrymonarch #Restoration #royalfamily #royal #royalty #windsorcastle #buckinghampalace #britishroyalfamily #royals #EnglishHistory #Britishhistory #britishroyalty #britishroyals #crown #britishmonarchy #windsor #RoyalHistory #HistoryFacts #British #London #Historic #monarch #monarchy (at United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAS_XcLDP7X/?igshid=2wzw36ip8ojx

Thank you so much to everyone for all your kind messages. I am finally starting to feel better & having been in bed since New Year’s Eve - Notwithstanding #hospital - I’m venturing out to Home House this evening to celebrate... in the Intrum I’m absorbed in restoration Mayfair and our most popular queen in history The eccentric cross dressing #catherineofbraganza Portuguese Most famous as the cross-dressing queen who brought us #tea #sugar and #spice and all things nice much of her put popularity can be attributed to the popularity of her husband, our #Merry #Monarch #KingCharlesII Who introduced croquet crickets and sparkling champagne is the favourite beverage other than tea in England in the 1660’s As a lasting tribute Catherine & Charles’ insignia - the two C’s -remain entwined on all the lampposts bins &mail boxes of Mayfair today. Their portraits were the first mass produced images in print history and it is estimated every household in the kingdom had her portrait if not the kings on their wall but twice of many imprints were made of Catherine than were made than Charles. A great testament to how beloved she was by people across all social strata of the kingdom (at Mayfair)

A Finely Tailored History of the Business Suit

Menswear is rooted in practicality and pragmatic beginnings. Through time, men wore clothing as a means of survival and doing work and vary rarely for fashion. Kings and the ruling class wore clothing for fashion, and everyone else wore clothes so that they didn’t freeze to death. No matter if you are wearing a suit for work or a wedding, a tuxedo, or a sport coat, they all have the same origin story. The history of the business suit traces back 300 years to the mid-17th century in England and the end of a plague. An Edict from the King King Charles II of England changed men’s fashion in his kingdom out of necessity. England was emerging from the plague and the Great Fire of London. His subjects didn’t have much and he wanted to bring a new era of stability. He ordered the nobility to wear simple tunics, a far cry from the flamboyant wardrobes that were common at the time. The simple pant, shirt, and tunic combination quickly became popular among merchants and aristocrats. The earth-toned palette was reinforced by the normal English countryside attire of a dark coat and riding pants. A Beau for all Seasons The 18th century saw another transformation in the suit. George “Beau” Brummel is credited with being the godfather of the modern men’s suit. He was a friend of the prince regent and was working with him to develop new military uniforms for one of the English regiments. Beau believed that fabric cut and fit were the most important traits concerning men’s attire. Read the rest on www.mrglitterati.com Read the full article

On This Day In Royal History . 29 May 1630 . King Charles II was born . . ◼ Charles was born in St James’s Palace on 29 May 1630. His parents were Charles I, who ruled the three kingdoms of England, Scotland, and Ireland, and Henrietta Maria, the sister of the French king Louis XIII. Charles was their second son and child. Their first son, who was born about a year before Charles, had died aged less than a day. . ◼ Charles was baptised in the Chapel Royal on 27 June by the Anglican Bishop of London William Laud and brought up in the care of the Protestant Countess of Dorset, though his godparents included his maternal uncle and grandmother, Marie de’ Medici, both of whom were Catholics. . ◼ At birth, Charles automatically became Duke of Cornwall and Duke of Rothesay, along with several other associated titles. At or around his eighth birthday, he was designated Prince of Wales, though he was never formally invested with the Honours of the Principality of Wales. . 👑 Charles was king of England, Scotland & Ireland. He was king of Scotland from 1649 until his deposition in 1651, & king of England, Scotland & Ireland from the restoration of the monarchy in 1660 until his death in 1685. . . . #OnThisDayInHistory #ThisDayInHistory #TheYear1630 #CharlesII #KingCharlesII #CharlesIIofEngland #KingofEngland #HouseofStuart #Stuart #Stuarts #HisMajesty #RoyaltyinArt #BritishMonarchy #GodSaveTheKing #d29may #Royalhistory #StJamesPalace #Merrymonarch #monarch #Theking #CharlesI #RoyalHistory #OnThisDay #otd #KingCharlesI #historyfacts #EnglishMonarchy #Art #Portrait #portraitpainting (at St James’s Palace) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAyH9QDjMmh/?igshid=4ruhib1crydw

Boscobel House where Charles II found refuge following his defeat at the battle of Worcester & home to (a descendent) of the "Royal Oak" where he hid from his pursuers. The clever use of tromp l'oeil in place of timbers are the 19th century's attempt to disguise the brick dairy extension to the original 16th century building. #tromploeil #englishheritage #englishhistory #kingcharlesii #royalty #royaloak #petittrianondesign #englishcivilwar #royalhistory (at Boscobel House and the Royal Oak)

I am #honoured to have received the #orderofthecrown Of #Stuart for my research into the extraordinary contribution by the #Stuart #monarchy & their #demedici wives & relatives 1603-1714 to #thearts & #eccentricity in #British #Culture & thinking. From the creation of champagne & popularisation of tea, which put women at the head of social events to the popularisation, patronage & protection of #opera #ballet #theatre & poetry & the intellectual Salons which were an immediate byproduct of the popularisation of tea. So much of what makes us quintessentially British was introduced by the Stuart Monix and the Medici wives and relatives. I very much look forward to our next Stuart Monarch which will be Prince William who by virtue of his mother Princess Diana is a direct descendent of #KingCharlesII The Merry Monarch (at The Ritz London)
