LMAOOO i got my therapist to talk kkc with me for a minute at the end of our session today, his takes are a) we're never getting DoS (i disagree), b) Bredon=Cinder (i disagree but it's a plausible theory), and c) the four-plate door is hiding the library of the Amyr (possible, i hadn't considered that)
he did not however know about the Lorren=Amyr theory so i got to tell him about that ehehe
#and then he recced me a different series he thinks i'll like bc i like kkc#my therapist is cooler than yours :)#kkc#kingkiller chronicle#kkc theories

The Yllish Story Knot on the Lackless box contains instructions on how to open it.
The Box itself contains 2 items: 1) Instructions on how to make the box.
2) A really clear glass marble, that was super hard to make to make 3000 years ago, and was a prize for whoever opened it.
Not their fault that it took so long and glass smelting advanced to such a degree.

The Narrow Road Between Desires by Patrick Rothfuss
Bast knows how to bargain. The give-and-take of a negotiation is as familiar to him as the in-and-out of breathing; to watch him trade is to watch an artist at work. But even a master's brush can slip. When he accepts a gift, taking something for nothing, Bast's whole world is knocked askew, for he knows how to bargain—but not how to owe.
From dawn to midnight over the course of a single day, follow the Kingkiller Chronicle's most charming fae as he schemes and sneaks, dancing into trouble and back out again with uncanny grace. -Storygraph
I knew going into this book that it was going to be an expansion on Rothfuss' earlier story, "The Lightning Tree," so I wasn't too surprised by the retreading of familiar territory. I loved the story in its initial version, as Bast is one of my favorite characters of the series and I enjoy seeing the more domestic, low key adventures that happen to characters when the plot isn't in motion. It's very familiar to The Slow Regard of Silent Things, another Temerant novella, in that it really just follows a single character as they go about their day. Sometimes normal things happen, sometimes fantastic things, but eventually, they all return home at the end of the day, satisfied by a day's events. As a result, some readers looking for a bit of plot may find the book plodding in that way, but I personally don't count it as a slight against the book.
Despite my familiarity of the original story, I was still just as hooked as when I first read its predecessor. The overall skeleton was the same, but the sinews that held it all together had slightly altered. In many ways, the story goes a bit deeper. To use the book's terminology, where the "The Lightning Tree" seemed, The Narrow Road Between Desires was. Bast is still his usual, charming, clever self, but we get to see a little further into him. The relationship between him and Rike was sweet in the original story, but here, it's genuinely moving. I think before Rike's feelings were a bit more vague, a bit more subtle. You could get a feel for his situation through context clues, but the story moved on before making anything definite. Now, his pain and fear feel more tangible; how he relates to Bast and reveals his desperation is more emotional. It's a wonderful transfiguration that makes this installment into the series as worthy as any of the main novels.
I think the embrils, a way of fortune telling in this world, are an interesting addition. I can see so many theories being made about what they mean and how they may affect the larger story taking place. It's a neat way of expanding the world in a small way.
Rothfuss referring to Bast as "a good wolf" in the author's note is such a marvelous way of looking at his character. He's beautiful, graceful, with a bit of tooth to him. There's a hint of danger, but also a fierce loyalty and drive to protect what is his. There's cunning and power, patience and resolve, but, ultimately, a creature that's comfortable being exactly what he is. In this novella, we get such a great character study that would have been hard to fit in the main story. Just another benefit of one of these sidepaths hidden just along the road of this adventure.
Really, I don't have a bad thing to say about this book because, well, I am incredibly biased. This series was everything to me as a teen and, as a adult, it still holds a large place in my heart. Would I like the conclusion to the series? Sure. Will anything that comes out of this world delight me in the interim? Historically speaking, yes. I am willing to wait that much longer if it means richer, more meaningful storytelling every time.

Laurian and the Chandrian
“Since you asked so sweetly, Cinder is the one you want. Remember him? White hair? Dark eyes? Did things to your mother, you know. Terrible. She held up well though. Laurian was always a trouper, if you’ll pardon the expression. Much better than your father, with all his begging and blubbering.”
My mind flashed pictures of things I had tried to forget for years. My mother, her hair wet with blood, her arms unnaturally twisted, broken at the wrist, the elbow. My father, his belly cut open, had left a trail of blood for twenty feet. He’d crawled to be closer to her. - The Wise Man’s Fear, Chapter 104: The Cthaeh, pg 757
____________
Kvothe’s graphic description of his parents’ murders, finally given to us in Book 2 thanks to the Cthaeh’s taunting. Sorry for bringing it up again.
It’s obvious here that though both were killed horribly, Laurian was tortured prior to her death, and Arliden was not. He was given one fatal gut wound, and though he died slowly, like Alleg later in the same book, he was dead as soon as he was wounded, “he just hadn’t stopped moving yet” (WMF, Chapter 132: The Broken Circle, pg 961).
Maybe Cinder tortured Laurian just because some people like torturing women more. That’s what I assumed when I first read it. But Haliax went with them on that escapade. Haliax stopped Cinder from tormenting young Kvothe, saying, “This one has done nothing. Send him to the soft and painless blanket of his sleep.... You are too fond of your little cruelties. All of you. I am glad I decided to accompany you today. You are straying, indulging in whimsy. Some of you seem to have forgotten what it is we seek, what we wish to achieve” (NotW, Chapter 16: Hope, pgs 128-129).
Haliax was there enforcing their goals, which means torturing Laurian had a purpose other than cruelty.
Kvothe tells us his parents were writing the song about Lanre together. Everything Arliden knew about them, Laurian knew as well. So she was not tortured for information about their sources, or anything to do with the song. (Unless the Chandrian assumed she would be more likely to talk than Arliden, which is unlikely, because with seven of them there, they could easily have tortured both of them at the same time.)
So Laurian knew something that Arliden didn’t know (or the Chandrian thought she did).
It’s pretty widely accepted that Laurian used to be Natalia Lackless, the missing Lackless sister (there are a million posts about it on reddit, and it’s even in her Wiki page).
So the Chandrian found a Lackless heir unprotected, in a place where no one would ever know she was dead, and seized their chance.
The most likely thing they wanted information on: the Lackless Box.
Whatever theories you subscribe to about what the Box is, what’s in it, and how to open it, there’s no doubt that it is Important. A secret as old as the Lackless family, that they guard closer than anything else.
If the Chandrian were trying to get information about it from Laurian, then it’s a secret that has been kept even from them.
The Cthaeh says she “held up well.” Does that mean she told them nothing before she died? That she told them lies? That she held out for a while, but then gave in? We can’t know yet.
But, it means the Chandrian are coming for the Lacklesses. Finding out more about the Box serves their purpose. Which means the people who know about the box: Meluan, Alveron, Aculeus (possibly), and Kvothe, are all in their crosshairs.
Maybe they can’t go after the prestigious Lacklesses because they are protected. Maybe they’ll try, and there will be some upheaval in Temerant. Maybe that’s why Cinder was trying to destabilize the Maer. I could talk maybes all day, but there’s one thing we know.
Kvothe has none of the protections of money and power that Alveron and Meluan have. And now he knows about the Box. True, the Chandrian don’t know yet that he knows, but it’s only a matter of time. After all, he was in the company of Meluan Lackless, and shortly thereafter started researching Yllish story knots. Why would he do that? Not even Yllish people know Yllish anymore.
TL;DR
The Chandrian are after the secrets of the Lackless Box. Now that Kvothe knows about it, they will come for him. And it’s likely he will find out that his mother was a Lackless.

King killer chronicles theory.
We've already been shown how to kill the leader of the seven.
A man who's face is hidden in shadow. And we've seen how to cut shadow when Kvothes Shadow cloak was made. And she used moon light to do it.
That's why the songs say to fear a night with no moon.
It's not just that the moon is more in the fae world then the mortal one.
That's why his former friend and ally bound his face in shadow. Now it's not his name that needs to be known. Because once you know the name of shadow you can bar his path. Make it so he can't escape and so that tehlu and his angels can imprison him again or cut him down.
Brought to you by 2am thoughts!

Kingkiller theory post:
Denna has muscles. Like, serious muscles. From carrying her harp around all the time. Unless she gets people to carry it for her, which is possible but unlikely.
Sim writes poetry. Really bad poetry. But it’s bad in an adorable way, not a creepy way.
I agree with other people who helped make the Kingkiller wiki on at least one point: I think the four plated door has a route to where the Amyr live and books about the Amyr and the Chandrian.
I’d like to know if there’s an antidote to the misfortune caused by the Cthaeh. If there is one, that’d be really cool.
Fela is not Chandrian. Sorry guys. I love her too much. Plus the idea of her destroying a forge where Master Kilvin is even when there’s no one talking about her being Chandrian make the theories that she’s a Chandrian really weird.
I don’t want to hear about the Chandrian. I want to hear about the Amyr. I think they’re way more decent than the Chandrian. I don’t agree with reddit bros that the Chandrian are the good guys.

Kote can't open the thrice locked chest because he got the keys confused.
Y'see, it is obvious that the Iron Key should go with the Iron Lock, and the Copper Key with the Copper Lock. So he had to switch them.
But anyone who knew it was Kvothe's chest would know he would do that, so he switched it back. But that is what people would expect, so he had to do the opposite, and so on. Until he totally forgot what layer he landed on.
(for those of you wondering why the copper key clicked when turned if it was the wrong key: It would be pretty damn obvious that it was the wrong key if it didn't click)

Also, it’s super weird that we get a comment about how no one uses gut strings in this day and age, because if that’s the case I have no idea what Kvothe is stringing his lute with or why. Like, gut strings are still used. I string half my harp with gut. There’s debate in the harp community about where to switch over from gut to nylon strings. And while the harp and the lute certainly differ, I’m pretty sure gut is still a popular lute choice as well. Gut is great! The tone is rich, the sound is well-blended. If he’s not using it, what’s he using? Is he using silk strings? If so, where’s he getting the silk? He can’t have access to nylon. Metal-wound? If so, why?
This is almost certainly a weird thing to be hung up on but I’ve been thinking about this for days now.
#kingkiller chronicle#if he's stringing his lute with metal this only supports my 'kvothe actually plays guitar' theory

The Kingkiller Chronicle’s mad post of theories
As fans of Rothfuss’ writing may have heard, there has been some turmoil lately regarding the publishing of the third book, from Pat’s publisher, Betsy Wollheim’s statement («I’ve never seen a word of book three»), and the suspicious Doors of Stone leakage that turned out to be a joke (ending in «It’s way worse than that. I am an author who has tricked you...»). But we will not dwell on the writing or lack thereof, on Rothfuss personal issues, the drama between author and publisher or the readers that selfishly feel entitled to insult a writer for not delivering as per their wishes (no more toxicity, please!). We are here to enjoy the books, and we have come to discuss one of Pat’s favorites: THEORIES.
It is widely known among fans of Kvothe’s story that Pat Rothfuss describes himself as a trickster with words, and has bragged since the publishing of The Wise Man’s Fear that he wrote the ending of the trilogy in book one... Fans have been theorising for years, now, and have come with more or less plausible, more or less bizarre theories. We —and with that I mean ‘I’, for I’m the KKC-obsessed one of the group— have collected some of them and summed them up here. DISCLAIMER: these are *a few* of them; please, don’t bite me, eager Rothfuss fan-haters!
The Doors of Stone The title of the third book entrails some mystery per se. The most obvious theory is that it has something to do with the door Kvothe finds in the library at the university, the one with the four plates. Maybe Auri (see below) has the key to that door? Is it related to the Amyr in any way? Or is it just a red herring? On TNOTW, Skarpi mentions Lanre «[setting the beast, his enemy] beyond the Doors of Stone». In TWMF, when Felurian explains the theft of the moon, she refers to the shaper of the moon as being trapped behind Doors of Stone (Coincidence? I don’t think so), and she refuses to speak his name, which leads us to...
The Chandrian ...Haliax, the leader of the Chandrian, the enemy of the Amyr. It is somewhat implied in Felurian’s words that the shaper must be (if not themself) related to the Chandrian. And, may Haliax be the beast Lanre trapped behind the Doors of Stone? Or is Haliax another name for Jax/Iax, the stealer of the moon? Very suspiciously similar names, aren’t they? Maybe he is both! And Cinder, our dear Cinder. It is curious, to say the least, how coincidentally...
Denna’s master ...Denna’s master is called «Master Ash», which could refer to the tree, but also... To cinder! Could Denna be related to the Chandrian via her master, then? Or is it with the Amyr? His master could also be Bredon, as they seem to disappear both at the same time... (Keyboard is gonna hate me for writing «coincidence» too many times today.)
Bredon So, could Bredon be both Denna’s Master and Cinder? It is obvious he hides something. Is he a Chandrian? Maybe an Amyr? What were his true goals, why did he befriend Kvothe, to make him do something he shouldn't, like help the Maer Marry Meluan Lackless?...
The Lackless ...who, apart from being (almost canon by now) Kvothe’s aunt via her sister Netalia (Arliden sings about her wife, K’s mother: «It’s worth my life to take my wife not tally a lot less...», now read it out loud ;D), and apparently loosely related to the Chronicler himself, Devan Lochees, it is also rumoured to be Bredon’s daughter! In that case, Bredon would be Aucleus Lackless, aka, Kvothe’s grandfather! And, of course, the owner of...
The thrice-locked chest ...the chest that Meluan Lackless presents to, among others, Kvothe, which is said to smell somewhat ashy, burned and citric, just like the Cthaeh. It is said that precisely its words brought Kvothe to his own downfall. May the chest that...
Kote ...has in his chambers in the Waystone Inn be the same chest Meluan Lackless had shown him? What does it lock? Theories Kvothe’s Shaed, his lute, Saicere... the true identity of Taborlin the Great, and even Iax’s moon! The most plausible, though, is that it keeps Kvothe’s name locked, his true nature... It’s not coincidentally that Kilvin says that disaster hits every seven years, «Chan vaen dan Kote», Kote meaning disaster... We still have to unveil what disaster did Kvothe bring upon himself to end up in the Waystone Inn...
Kvothe Reading carefully, one cannot overlook how Kvothe’s eyes change colour according to his feelings. He seems to be too good at whatever he does, as if being struck by some sort of otherworldly luck, if you know what I mean.. Could Kvothe be, in fact, son of a Fae? May he have something to do with the real...
Amyr These hunters of the Chandrian, the Holy Order of the Aturan Empire that have supposedly been dismantled for centuries may be, in fact, closer to Kvothe than he seems to notice. Are they controlling the politics (and therefore, meddled in Meluan’s marriage to the Maer or even Kvothe’s acceptance in the University)? Apart from Bredon, some theories point to Master Lorren, Master Elodin and even...
Auri, the blonde girl who is rumored to be Princess Ariel, the one Kvothe saves from Sleeping Barrow Kings. There even is a rumour that relates her to Laurian, Kvothe’s mother, because of their names (Laurian). In their many encounters (including TSROSL), Auri gives many gifts to Kvothe, including a key (maybe to the library door?), a candle and a coin... the magical objects in possession of Taborlin the Great. Auri is also frequently compared and related to the moon... May she have something to do with the moon, Iax and, ultimately, with the Fae?
Bast ... prince of whom is Bast, Kote’s apprentice and most-fangirled bastard in the series. It is still a mystery how he came to meet Kvothe and why are they together. Is his and Felurian’s son? It is to be understood that they met or that Bast himself came to his encounter in the mortal world, since if Kvothe had entered the Fae realm, Felurian wouldn’t have been too keen on letting him go for a second time. Besides, we all kind of freaked out at the ending of TWMF... What is he trying to do with the Chronicler? What are his intentions in making his master remember? What should Kvothe go back to that is so crucial to Bast? What we know for sure, though, is that Bast will never finish reading Celum Tinture. It’s a fact.
There are thousands of other theories, too many to include in this post (and you probably wouldn’t have made it to the end of it), but we would love to know yours! And, who knows, maybe we can update it upon the release of Doors of Stone! Meanwhile, we will still enjoy rereading TNOTW and TWMF for the hundredth time and fantasizing of Kvothe’s red hair and sweet voice playing Tintatatornin in the Eolian once more.

Lorren uses his hands a LOT when he’s upset tho.
After Kvothe lights the candle in the archive:
“Lorren turned away from me, and made a brief, contemptuous gesture toward the desk.”
“‘E’lir Kvothe is banned from the Archives.’ [Lorren] made a sweeping gesture with the flat of his hand.”
I’m just saying...stony impassivity is mentioned multiple times referring to Lorren at all other times...*ahem* adem *ahem*
