My knight deltarune theory is complex and nuanced, and you don't have to agree with me but I do think people are taking the knight being a lightner as a very 'they have a secret identity' when I don't think thats the case. Instead, who I think the knight is....

The Roaring Knight is an Amalgamate

(Spoilers for Undertale's True Pacifist Route, and all of Deltarune so far lol)

Now we're only at the halfway point of the story so I don't like to make any concrete claims, but this is the idea I've been throwing around in my head.

Susie says that the roaring knight is in fact a lightner in chapter 4, and we haven't actually met anyone that looks like that. Keep in mind when lightners go to the dark world they don't change shape. Their outfits change, their color palettes change, but their silhouettes don't.

Given everything we know about these characters, before the events of the game, Dess 'disappeared' but I believe she fell down. If it's been a while since you played undertale, when a monster 'falls down' it's a comatose state monsters enter before they die and turn to dust. They're essentially dead like this, just not yet turned to dust. We don't really get much information outside of this.

Similarly to how it went in undertale I believe hers and several others bodies were taken to the shelter, allowed by Carol (and probably Asgore) to experiment on in an attempt to revive her. At some point Kris either goes to investigate the Shelter or... they end up there somehow.

Now here's the interesting part, reading some books in the library I noticed the differences in knowledge between the two worlds. In the book about souls in deltarune, it says "But even now, the true function of it [the soul] is unknown." To me personally, this implies that in this world, no one yet knows about the power of the human soul, to persevere beyond death and time (determination) etc. (How they don't know this, is unclear. My best guess is that humans might not be as prevalent in this world as monsters despite the seemingly peace between them. It's also possible this is just a Small Town Vibe lol) since they don't know this I have my doubts they know about the effects of a human soul in tandem with a monster soul. But whoever is at the shelter is slowly uncovering these secrets.

Anyway, point is Kris somehow ended up at the shelter, or perhaps Kris felt they had something to do with Dess's disappearance and Carol, working with whoever is experimenting in the shelter, guilted Kris into helping with the experiments. (Since they're the only human for miles likely). Kris let their soul be experimented on, and with the determination, The Knight was formed. But since the knight is still somewhat connected to Kris (and the determination is from a living soul as opposed to the dead souls in undertale) , they ended up being more well put together than most other amalgamates, similarly to flowey.

So tbh? Basically what I'm saying is i think the knight is still part of Kris mostly, but it's also... using parts of Dess. And likely other monsters too. Again, nuanced.

If you don't agree with this theory, that's fine, this is just what I think. I, however, do want you to ask yourself something, a lil thought experiment if you will. How did Kris's soul end up in 'our' hands to begin with?

so the continuation of snowgrave is interesting

noelle says the night before kris visited her and kiiiind of but not really? apologized for the snowgrave route. at least we can assume kris is remorseful for that because when we resume control and reassert our dominance over her they fuck up a trash can in a rage

noelle is also excited that kriss old deadpan voice was back. meaning that kris never used to emote and any enthusiasm that we make them exhibit is not their true reaction. even the nice friendly pacifist things though thats not too new information

i didnt talk to catti yet but in a pacifist route she resents kris for becoming friends with susie which. is a pretty extreme reaction. in fact everyone has a pretty extreme reaction to her that doesnt seem. entirely justified. catti also puts a hex on kris (jockington neutralizes kt with the power of SPORTS) and mentions their past of studying the occult together

we also know that kris has like. monster dysphoria. they wanted to be like their adopted momster family even having a horn headband like we see in tennas flashback. its possible since humans couldnt do magic as well as monsters kris studied it with catti to try and find a way to cast magic as a human

i wonder if the human soul we play as isnt like. a demonic possession they conjured. but i also wonder if kris wasnt born without a soul. the idea of a deadpan voice aligns with how we usually depict a "soulless" person

at the same time kris ALWAYS returns the soul to their body which means that kris NEEDS it to some extent. whether thats that they cant survive without a soul for extended periods of time or because they need us the player to do their bidding and play into their plans

maybe kris needs a bustling dark castletown to achieve their goals. maybe this time playing the pacifist is playing into the goals of the villain

An important thing to me about Kris and Silver is that they're deeply weird about each other.

They're first and foremost rivals, they're family, they're each other's first buddy, they have something indescribable and vaguely queerplatonic going on, they're transgender together, and they're both deeply lonely kids who were only able to start forming bonds with kids their own age in the context of a mutual drive to make anything into a competition.
