Translating the A - Z Game!

I haven't made a post in a while, but yesterday our translated subs to the A - Z Butter Churners game got added to the video, so I thought it's the perfect game to write a long ass analysis on. All credits for this translation go to my teammate Aleksandra! You did a fine job, girl!

As a reminder, the rules of the A - Z game state that everytime we switch players, they have to start their utterance with the next letter of the alphabet, as in the example:

AJ: Alo, mate! Tom: Bad boy! Now, you don't have to be a polyglot to know that words look different in different languages and that includes the first letter of that given word. Butter might start with a B in English, but Masło starts with an M in Polish (or Spanish, even). We could've technically translated this video word for word, but then it would make zero sense within the confines of the game. So we had to come up with creative ways to transcreate what was said to 1) convey the meaning of the utterance and 2) comply with the rules of the game. Wouldn't that be quite hard to do, you may ask? Well, yes, but let me tell you it gets even harder when you throw Polish alphabet and the language's spelling and pronunciation rules into the mix.

Quick (I hope) Polish lesson: 1. The Polish alphabet in its fullest form contains 35 letters, 9 of which are modified Latin alphabet letters with diacritics like ą, ę, ć, ł, ń, ó, ś, ź, ż. Ą, ę and ń cannot ever start a word, they can only end it or stand in the middle of it. 2. Letter V is not used at all in the spelling of our native words, only those we got from foreign languages. The sound English 'V' (IPA: [v]) makes is used though in Polish phonetics, but this sound is written down in Polish as the letter W (IPA: [v]). The sound the labial-velar approximant W makes (for example, in words like weep, weak, wood, etc.) in English is written down as the letter Ł in Polish. The only time you will see V in Polish is if it's a foreign word (e.g. Victoria's Secret the lingerie brand). Even though we don't use this letter in our alphabet, we know V makes the same sound as our W. 3. Q can be read as /ku/ like in the word "cookie" or just /k/ in Polish but we never use it in our spelling unless it's a foreign word (e.g. Queen the music band). 4. X can be read as /iks/ or /ks/, but again, the only time you will see this letter in Polish is if it's 1) a foreign word like Xerox, 2) a math lesson and 3) the best emoji ever invented which is XD or xd or Xd or xD or iks de. We Poles love xd. XD remains strong in Polish internet culture. 5. Letter Y cannot start a word, it can only end one or stand in the middle of it. The sounds this letter makes in Polish is more or less the sound you make when you say "kit", "hit", "did". The letter we use to write down the sound English Y makes (IPA: [j], like in words yes, you, etc.) is J. With that, you might be starting to think this is going to be problematic for the translation of an English A-Z game and ding dong, you are right! So let me show a few interesting (read: difficult) examples of how our team managed to translate the Amish Butter Churners.

These are examples of those words that were difficult because of their starting letter, but of course this doesn't mean translating all the other words was easy. Surprisingly (or unsurprisingly) on of the easiest ones was... 'cuuun... chicken" which is just a simple "cccip... cykor" (cipa is cunt and cykor is coward). Other ones which were kinda difficult were the "fuck yeah", "god yeah", "hell yeah", which would translate to "kurwa no", "boże no" and "piekło no". However, we have a saying in Poland which is "gitara gra" (a guitar is playing) which is an exclamation we make when something goes well for us. So, since we have a 'G' for 'god yeah', we also did 'filharmonia gra' for 'fuck yeah' (a philharmonic orchestra is playing) and 'harfa gra' for 'hell yeah' (a harp is playing). In the same vain, "butter", "curds", "dairy" wouldn't work because that translates to "masło", "grudki", "nabiał", so instead in Polish Sam and Tom are saying "biały ser" (white cheese), "cheddar" (self-explanatory) and "danonki", which are these cute little cups of yoghurt every single Polish child eats:

Lepidopterans, the insect clade including butterflies and moths, were among the invertebrate species seeded onto the planet's biome, in order to act as pollinators that allowed the numerous introduced plants to survive. While most of them adhered to this lifestyle and ecological niche, as ravenous leaf-eaters that metamorphosed into flying pollinators, a few began to experiment with more unconventional lifestyles.

Some of the stranger kinds included the caterpedes: a group of neotenic species that matured simply as larger larvae and skip metamorphosis altogether: filling niches as forest floor detritivores, folivores or occasionally even predators of other insects. And perhaps more unusual are the clade known as the Hemimetamorpha, or "half-changed", which do pupate and emerge as adults with proboscises: yet retain their silk glands ejecting silk through a spinneret located directly below the proboscis and between the labial palps, allowing them to construct nests or wrap their eggs in silk sacs for protection.

Many of the Hemimetamorpha do not develop wings, and instead, thanks to their piercing and sucking mouthparts, fill the niches of true bugs on Earth: as sap-suckers akin to aphids, leafhoppers or cicadas, predators of small arthropods, or even as as flea-like parasites on larger animals. And in the case of one clade, the spooders, they use their retained silk glands to spin webs to catch their prey, in a manner akin to their arachnid namesake.

The red-spotted skeeter (Arachnopapilo rubrum) is one widespread Middle Temperocene species, ranging well across the tropics and temperate zones of Gestaltia and Arcuterra. Despite appearances, it sports two ocelli, one next to each compound eye, large feathery antennae possessing olfactory receptors, and a proboscis, albeit a short, sharp one rather than the long, coiled ones of nectar-feeders, all of which mark its lepidopteran ancestry despite the otherwise lack of resemblance to them.

Female red-spotted skeeters spin webs among grasses and branches, waiting to ensnare flying insects that they then immobilize with digestive enzymes in their saliva, while males are smaller and nomadic, instead hunting by pouncing on their prey and traveling across larger areas of territory compared to the more sedentary females who prefer to stay in their webs. They are also more brightly colored, in order to entice a mate, as the larger female is not above preying upon a suitor she does not like, though occasionally, a male may resort to restraining a female with his own silk, immobilizing her long enough to successfully mate and fleeing before she escapes.

Once mated, the female wraps her eggs into a silk pouch, searches out a safe place with plenty of food, and leaves the egg sac there to develop with no further intervention. The young hatch out as fairly typical caterpillars, yet are carnivores like the adults, tracking down and ambushing other small insects, in particular ants due to their foraging trails being a reliable source of food that comes to them as they lie in wait, as well as their toxic compounds being sequestered by the larva for its own defense. With a nutritious protein-rich diet, the larva matures faster than a leaf-eating caterpillar, and is ready to pupate within a week or two, producing a camouflaged chrysalis that is attached to branches and stems and further disguised by bands of silk. After another 5-7 days it emerges as an adult, and is immediately ready to hunt for a meal within minutes, being wingless and thus bypassing the long vulnerable phase of waiting of their wings to unfold. Within the span of a month, another generation is fully-fledged and ready to breed: a rapid turnover vital for a species with high mortality rates and many enemies-- including members of its own species in both their larval and adult forms.

.Del 11 al 19 de Mayo.

Vinieron los tíos a pasar la tarde, papá hizo asado y el tío Martín me interrogó sobre mi relación con Agus, está celoso pero era obvio, la tía Yanina y yo discutimos sobre Nico pero pasó todo rápido y también hablamos en la mesa sobre enanos y boludeces, ellos querían salir de joda esa noche pero se terminaron volviendo temprano.

Me llovieron varias preguntas insistentes en qué hace Agus, de qué trabaja, que auto tiene, qué planes tiene conmigo, cómo me trata, sus ingresos, su familia, sus amigos. Literal había cosas que ni yo sabía responder, qué sé yo cuánto gana con tal de que tenga no me importa el número, tampoco sabía muy bien la movida de los amigos porque lo que tengo para contar no es nada bueno así que fingí demencia y flaquie un poco en las respuestas diciendo que no los conocía bien.

Había quedado con Agus para vernos así que cociné brownies que tenía muchas ganas de hacer, pero no les saqué foto, me olvidé. Pero estaban muy vistosos y ricos, unos de cacao amargo y otro con nesquic un poco más amables. Luego Agus se llevó los que sobraron en un tupper a su casa.

Me vestí, les dejé las cositas dulces para merendar a los tíos y saludé. Agus me pasó a buscar y tomamos mates por ahí, nos costó encontrar un lugar lindo para dejar el auto, pero lo encontramos, aunque medio tarde. Tiramos una mantita y vimos los satélites, otra vez había una luna hermosa e iluminaba todo incluso sin una luz en el medio del campo. Él se fue de viaje de compras con los amigos y se trajo un par de cosas, yo le había pedido un labial en dos tonos, si no había uno podía traerme del otro y sino nada; y pensé que no lo había conseguido, como nos vimos un par de veces después que volvió intuí que no lo encontró. Pero sacó una bolsita de MAC con dos labiales y un body splash de Victoria Secret. That´s my man right there.

Volviendo nos quedábamos sin nafta así que paramos en una axion a cargar y al baño, cuando salgo del baño me dice que si quería ir a cenar y yo of course i wanna hang out with you more time cutiepie.

Así que fuimos a comer al 1516.

Tuvimos la charla de introducción familiar, me hizo un resumen de su árbol genealógico, me acuerdo poquito. Pero viene Javier, el hermano mayor de su papá creo; Flavio, su papá; y después hay mellizos que son Yanina y Cristian. Hay algo de una señora loca medio descompensada y enferma que es la mamá de su prima que tiene 18 y estudia psicología, ella me cae bien pero no la conozco aun, ya con escuchar un poquito de los hechos sé que empatizo. Hay algo también con un tío que había conocido a una mujer genial que todos querían, pero el la cagó y ahora está con otra que está bien pero no era como la anterior. Y no me acuerdo nada más.

Su historia familiar es un cuento de niños al lado de la mía así que le conté como pude lo que me acordé, y estoy segura que me quedaron cosas por decir.

Al otro día fui a cursar y le saqué esta foto hermosa a lulú y también hicieron como un evento en la facultad y me quedé a chusmear que era hasta que se hizo tarde.

Había acordado ya y no hice varias veces el ir a verlo jugar a Agus y me quedé todo el partido, me da una paz interior ver y no entender nada, y al mismo tiempo no hacer ni un esfuerzo para que alguna neurona tenga la voluntad de entender, no sé qué es lo que está pasando nunca y esa es la parte más divertida. Saqué esta foto super cool mientras jugaban y después el ladrón de creatividad me la robó y la subió a ig.

El siguiente día no fui al hospital no me acuerdo porque pero estaba decidida a cocinar, así que Agus me dijo que venía y se quedaba en casa. Me mostró una foto de unos ñoquis así que ahí fue la hembra a cocinarle al macho como buena mujer sumisa!! Salieron varios, y también me pidió que haga una salsa boloñesa, 3 horas de cocción la salsita!! Pero disfrute cada momento. Es una buena excusa tener a alguien que quiere comer constantemente mucho para cocinar cosas ricas. Aunque había mucha humedad quedaron íntegros y super ligeros, aunque enormes. Tengo que aprender a moderar la medida o cortar los bollitos más chiquitos porque parecían oruguitas albinas. Los hice con leche proteica by the way!!

Al otro día saliendo a la mañana le saqué esta foto hermosa a los niños de la casa todos sentaditos en la puerta.

Compré unas luces leds para ponerle al auto, y pensé que iban a quedar re villeras pero quedaron super lindas, le dan un toque especial al interior aunque sean meramente ambientales.

La noche del 16 creo que hubo una tormenta terrible y se inundó todo, tenía el patio bajo agua y mamá faltó al trabajo y yo a la facultad, evidentemente Agus también que justo se quedó para pasar el temporal en casa, pero ninguno lo esperaba así; y papá sigue con el post operatorio de una hernia que le trataron con una faja abdominal en el Austral y no va a trabajar. Me asustaron los truenos a la noche, me despertó el ruido en varias ocasiones, pero Agus estaba ahí y se daba cuenta solo cuando abrazarme, yo no podía evitar reaccionar porque estaba dormida y no saben que fea sensación estar relajada y que de la nada te saquen totalmente de ese lugar seguro, encima temblaban todos los vidrios y lo primero que pensaba era en que Memé (El perro grande marrón) sufre mucho con el ruido de los truenos, de los tiros, los fuegos artificiales también, y si mamá lo había entrado para que duerma adentro (por suerte si lo entró).

Cuando me desperté para ir al hospital vi la cantidad de agua y le avisé a los chicos que no iba, le dije a mamá y ella me dijo que nos quedemos en casa hasta que podamos salir, a Agus que encima dejó el auto estacionado justo en la entrada le tapó casi la mitad de la rueda pero para la tardecita cuando se fue ya había bajado considerablemente.

El 19 entrené en el Palmas otra vez, salí tarde y me tomé un café, nada muy especial pasó ese día.

so... for this topic, I wanted to continue with the sub-category of the Anatomy and Physiology of insects.

all insect species possess, (in the adult stage), three pairs of jointed legs and three main body parts - head, thorax, and Abdomen.

Insects have three major body regions: head, thorax, and abdomen (see Insect Body Regions, right).

The head is made of 5-7 fused segments and bears the eyes, antennae, and mouthparts.

The thorax consists of three segments called the pro-, meso-, and metathorax. Appendages used for movement are attached to the thorax. Each of the segments of the thorax bears one pair of legs and if wings are present they are found on the meso- and metathorax only. The top of the prothorax is called the pronotum.

An insect's abdomen consists of 11 or fewer segments that generally do not bear any appendages, except for segments near the rear which may have appendages associated with reproduction

Head and Mouthparts

The head can be divided into general regions (see General Insect Head Regions and Mouthparts, left): the top of the head is the vertex, the side or cheeks are gena, the front of the face is the front, and below the front is the clypeus. These regions may be highly modified or lost in some groups of insects. Adult insects may have two types of eyes, larger compound eyes that consist of many facets (ommatidia), and eyes that occur as a single facet, ocelli. The number and placement of ocelli can be important for identification.

The mouthparts of humans consist of five layers or horizons; upper lip, upper jaw, tongue, lower jaw, and lower lip. Insect mouthparts also consist of five horizons and are made of appendages modified for food handling (see General Mouthparts, right). The labrum is similar to an upper lip. It is not divided but may have a notch on the outer (distal) edge. Below the labrum are the mandibles, paired structures generally made of strong material (heavily sclerotized) and used for cutting or grinding. The specific shape and various features found on the mandibles may be essential for understanding what and how an organism eats. The hypopharynx is an internal structure located below the mandibles and has a tongue-like function. Below the mandibles (externally) are paired appendages called the maxillae. Generally, each maxilla bears an appendage, the maxillary palpus that is used for food handling and may contain taste or smell organs called sensillae. The bottom horizon of insect mouthparts is the labium which is made of two fused maxilla-like structures and bears labial palps.

All insect mouthparts are modifications of this basic plan. A mosquito's proboscis contains all five mouthpart types, see the cross section in Mosquito Mouthparts, B., right. In cases of extreme modification, some mouthparts may become fused, reduced, or lost. Mouthpart arrangement can be critical when studying an insect's potential to vector a disease, access a portion of a plant, etc.

Insect Legs

Insect Legs. All insect legs contain the same basic parts: coxa, trochanter, femur, tibia, and tarsus, the latter of which is armed with one or two claws. The color of each leg part is the same throughout all the anatomy figures.

Insects have three pairs of legs, one pair on each of the three segments of the thorax, and are generally called the fore-, mid-, and hind legs. Any of the pairs of legs may be heavily modified and are important for locomotion, prey capture, mating, etc. Thankfully, just like mouthparts, all insect legs contain the same basic parts. From proximal (toward or against the body) to distal (away from the body) the parts of an insect leg are the coxa, trochanter, femur, tibia, and tarsus. The tarsus almost always has one or two claws at the type used to grasp the substrate. Basic Internal Anatomy

The internal anatomy of insects is amazingly complex. A good-sized caterpillar has more muscles than a human. The internal anatomy of insects differs from vertebrates (including humans) in several major ways.

Digestive/excretory system: Insects have a complete digestive system just like vertebrates (tube from the mouth to the anus) but it differs in a very important way (see Digestive System, left). The insect digestive system has three major regions, foregut, midgut, and hindgut.[1] The foregut and the hindgut are lined with chitin, the same stuff that makes up much of the exoskeleton of the insect. When an insect molts (sheds it's "skin", see below) it also sheds the internal lining of the fore- and hindguts. Loss of the gut contents is a problem if the insect relies on gut microorganisms (gut fauna) to help with digestion. The gut fauna often lives in the hind gut (termites, for example). Suddenly the gut fauna is lost and must be replenished with every molt.

Insects do not have kidneys. Instead, metabolic wastes are removed with the Malpighian tubules[2].

Respiratory (ventilation) system: Insects don't have lungs. They obtain oxygen and dispel carbon dioxide through a series of tubes called tracheae (see Respiratory System, right). The tracheae are attached to openings on the body called spiracles. The number and placement of spiracles varies and smaller insects may not have any. Traditionally, the view has been held that respiration in insects is passive, but recent evidence has demonstrated that some insects actively expand and contract trachea to ventilate their bodies.

Circulatory system: Insects do not have blood, or blood vessels that are part of a closed circulatory system. Instead, insects have an open circulatory system where a substance called hemolymph bathes the organs directly. Some insects have a long heart-like organ along the dorsal side of the internal organs that helps circulate the hemolymph through the body. It comprises a single sheath of tissue and a series of muscles, and in many insects includes a tubular portion that functions as a dorsal aorta. Hemolymph also circulates through the legs, wings, and antennae via a series of simple one-way valves.
