So, @painterofhorizons asked me about one of the projects I listed on that last meme.

Mass Effect: The Shanxi Files is a background piece for Caleb, sort of. I'm still sorting out bits and pieces of the plot, but it's going to focus on a few characters who play important roles in Caleb's life later on. For example, you'll get to see...

a younger Dr. Chakwas on her first deployment who is paired up with a young Irish medic named Ciaran O'Connell (Caleb's dad)

Anderson and Connor O'Bannon (aka: Athair) when they fought in the First Contact War...

Remember that tiny side quest in ME1 that involved Dr. Michel, Anderson and Admiral Kahoku? The one about Armistan Banes? Yeah, he's in it too and has a run in with one Jack Harper at the end of it...

So far, I've got most of my outline done and a draft of the prologue which will be the message General Williams sends out to Arcturus to let them know the colony's being attacked. I'm hoping it'll start grabbing hold soon because I really want to get it written and out there to share!

I had the privilege of participating in Spectre Requisition this year and boy are there ever some good ones this year.

With author reveal upon us, I'm finally able to share my work with you all. And boy have my fingers been twitching to post this.

Without further a do....

My first story was for my good friend @theoriginalladya.

LadyA, it was truly an honor to receive you as a giftee! I felt blessed when I saw your name be dropped in my inbox, it made it easier knowing your style and your preferences; it truly took some weight off my shoulders after coming back from a brief hiatus after October being that was the last time I posted and written anything.

I had a great blast writing Gianna Parasini and Kaidan Alenko working together to take down a master criminal in Breach Of Protocol. I wish I could have digged a bit deeper in the plot, but with Kaidan and Coats not cooperating during the first month, I regret to say that I ran out of time. However, I do hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. I took the pairing and ran with it when they started telling me their story.

Who knows, maybe they'll share part 2 with me to share with you at some point!

Also, in the last 48 hours, I managed to write a little treat for both @theoriginalladya and @mallaidhsomo, with some Kaidan Alenko/Major Coats in Sixth Time the Charm!

This was my first 5 +1 (5 times they didn't and the 1 time they did) trope that I've ever written. These two idiots drove me nuts! Every time they were so damn close to kissing, but didn't, I yelled at both of them!

But err, Tommy Coats and Kaidan Alenko may have stolen my heart because they are so mushy and adorable!

Oh, hey.... guess who showed up on my doorstep last night?

And then this morning, this showed up:

Some things hadn’t changed with the end of the war, but Major Kaidan Alenko had. The looks he received from passersby ranged from shock to surprise to fiendish delight were confirmation enough – apparently, the stupidity of wandering around Omega without a weapon in hand and another as backup fell under the category of 'unchanged.'

But he was tired; tired of war, tired of fighting, tired of the loss that continued, even a decade after it ended.

So, as he rounded the corner, expecting his target to be about a half block distant by now, and instead came face to face with the barrel of a pistol, it wasn't the weapon that cut deep and left him breathless, but the all too familiar pair of ice-cold blue eyes behind the weapon staring back at him.

“Why are you following me?”

*pulls out pen, notebook, and kicks plotting into high gear*

So, it's not really a surprise I have a bunch of post-war fics for Caleb Shepard planned. After all, he was originally only supposed to focus on stuff post-war... until I needed to figure out what an Earthborn Shepard was like, and then figure out his training... and Akuze... and now working on a couple pre-ME1 things that are necessary before we get to actual game-world fics...

But what was supposed to be three or so post-war fics (I thought) was six... but it's actually seven, and after today, may now be eight depending on how you count certain things. And they have to be done one after another in a row or things don't make sense. #1, #2, and #3 are all plotted (except for a few details) and different levels of partly written. #4 is... tricky. It's a newer one, and may be broken in two as 4a and 4b (if I move ahead with them - still not sold yet on the ideas), but #5 is semi-plotted as of a couple months ago. #7 is still in budding idea stage.

But today... today was all about story #6. It's one I've had in mind from the beginning, one that I actually wrote two prompts dealing with last year here and here. One that I was inspired by something in the games and that has been rather vague... until today.

While I've always known what I want to do with the story, I wasn't sure I could do it until today. I spent all of today sorting things out - looking through old notes, sorting out over a hundred post it notes that I've been carrying around in Caleb notebooks for the past year, finally pulling it all together to see just what I have and what I still needed. Turns out, I still needed a big chunk in the middle to figure out if I could even come up with a plausible way of doing it. It took ALL DAY... but I think I did it! Also, thanks to a wonderful friend, I also now have the story title, too! Yay! So, the rest of tonight I am going through and roughing out the story outline as a whole and hopefully (since bits of ideas have been popping in and out of my head for months) I can now move on to the drabbling stage to get them DOWN and SAFE so I can toy with them later on...

To be clear, one of the two plots has been poking at me to try to do something with it, and I mentioned maybe I should switch something up which led to music and the music to the EXPLOSION but still ....

Alrighty, hmm let me see ...

David Anderson

almost all of my Shepards either view him as a second dad or some sort of family member.  I think the game establishes there is a very good rapport between him and Shepard, enough to suggest they’ve known each other for a very long time.

I often have him and Kaidan’s father having served together, sometimes Shepard’s dad (if there is one), just to help tighten up the background a bit

there are times I headcanon that he survives the end of ME3 - depends more on the Shepard I’m writing about and if it’s necessary.  I mean, his death has importance too, and I don’t want to diminish that, but I’m a HUGE ‘WHAT IF?’ person - that’s usually how my story ideas get started! lol

oddly enough, I headcanon that he is quite the dancer - as in ballroom style dancing (not sure where that popped up from, but it’s there!)

of late (ShepShep fic), I’ve been headcanoning that he and Hackett sort of buck Alliance Command (why not?  Hackett is Fleet Admiral, he can get away with it if anyone can, right?) to get as much preparation for the Reaper arrival done as possible. (I’m happy to discuss this more in a separate ask, if you’re interested)

Space Hamster

If I can’t think of a specific name that any particular Shepard might have named him, they usually just call him Boo

I definitely headcanon that he’s a sneaky little rascal and will find ways to get out of his cage - either with Shepard’s unknowing help, or on his own

*** I DEFINITELY HEADCANON THAT THE REASON HE ENDS UP IN THE DUMPSTER DURING THE CITADEL DLC IS BECAUSE HE BIT THE CLONE ON THE THUMB!!!!! :P

He’s a bit smarter than your average Space Hamster (yes, like mabari smart! lol)

he is envious of the fish and their tank.  I mean, what space hamster wouldn’t want that much SPACE to play in, right?

ala the fanart that popped up from my queue (yesterday, I think?) I headcanon s/he and Grunt get along famously, and that Grunt will give it ‘rides’ on his shoulder throughout ME2

Boo is a bit afraid of Mordin at first because ... experiments, but warms up to him once he hears Mordin singing patter songs.

Thane just gets him.

Garrus makes or has made a small sniper rifle for Boo

Tali makes a small quarian-esque envirosuit that’s in N7 colors, complete with stripes, in Boo’s size

Tali and Garrus may have collaborated and done this on purpose

And Shepard loves them all the more for it!

Kaidan will let Boo out of the cage.  Once Boo can get a running start, it runs and jumps off the shelf ... and Kaidan uses his biotics to bounce him around Shepard’s office

Boo finds it amusing that the first time Jack and Miranda see him (different times and fairly shortly after his arrival) both were startled enough to yelp, thinking he was a mouse or something

Jack warms up to him; she’ll try some biotic stunts with him ME2 era which is why it’s comfortable with Kaidan ME3 era

Boo does NOT like the husk head in ME3

Boo DOES LIKE the chess set Shepard brings back from Omega and attempts to encourage Shepard to play by moving the pieces whenever it can

Boo is a BIG fan of smooth jazz (think Dave Brubeck’s “Take Five″)

Most Popular One-Shot: Oh, good question.  Well, I originally posted to both AO3 and ff.net but left the latter a while back so any of my DA oneshots that might have been popular are not up at the moment (hoping to relocate them over to AO3 at some point).  According to AO3 it’s I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead at 1067 hits.  Interesting.  It’s a little piece I wrote for a friend over here some years ago who loved the Shakarian romance.  The phrase (from the game) is also one I’ve used many times in my life as well.

Most Popular Multi-Chapter Story: Not too surprisingly, it’s Ever Constant at 3380 hits  which, coincidentally, is my longest fic at the moment (116 chapters).  It’s a Dragon Age AU where Bryallyn Cousland and Nathaniel Howe were married before the Blight and followed them through its entirety.  I had a lot of fun with that piece.

Favorite Story You Wrote: Oh gosh, how to choose???  I have far too many favorites among all of them!  I have 80 works over there, most of which are Mass Effect until I get some of my Dragon Age titles moved.

Story You Were Nervous to Post: Most nervous?  As of right now, Neverending Winter Nights probably.  It’s about Nathaniel Howe and an original character I used to play on an online RPG site from the DA world meeting and spending the night together.  I’m never very comfortable writing/posting those because I do it so rarely.  That may soon change, however ... 

How You Choose Your Titles: Usually they pop right into my head.  Song titles or lyrics, quite often, or possibly some word or theme from the chapter/story resonates and a title is born.  Occasionally they can be bad puns.  

Complete: Most of them?  Too many to count right now.

Incomplete: More than I’d like.  I had severe writer’s block a couple of years back because of real life stuff and since returning to writing, I’ve tried to focus on one at a time, though that isn’t always the case.  Right now my big focus is on finishing my ShepShep series and getting more comfortable writing Caleb Shepard with Kaidan.

Do You Outline? Unless it’s a oneshot, almost always.  Mostly it’s a way to organize major ideas I want to cover, keep track of pieces of dialogue I don’t want to lose, that sort of thing.  I’d never be able to write the longfics I do without them.

Coming Soon/Not Yet Started: More Caleb Shepard/Kaidan Alenko!  Also hoping to start getting some of my Werewolf adventures down on the page.  I’ve been RPG-ing that for over four years now and I have several characters I’d like to share.  Also included here is my OC Serafina MacKinnon from the DA world whose stories will protray my canon view of my playthroughs of the games.

Upcoming Story You Are Most Excited to Write: I’m always excited about ALL OF THEM!!!!!!!  Goodness .... Most excited, probably Serafina and her group of stories which will likely take me the rest of my life to write! lol  Also Caleb and Kaidan - I was pulled into that idea by a writing prompt from @swaps55 and I’ll admit, I’ve fallen so HARD for them.  But seriously, I’ve so many ideas and new ones are always hitting me.  Seriously, I have a spreadsheet for all my Shepards and I’m currently sitting at something like 85, I think???  The possiblities are endless!!!  This also goes for any/all fandoms I listed above.  Probably a few others, too.

I’m not sure who all has done this and at 2:30 AM, I’m not going to go check to see if certain people have, so I’ll just tag anyone who wants to share!  Please, if you do, let me know so I can see what you have going on with your writing!!!!!

Okay so as you do excellent headcanon posts, can you give us some about: Anderson&Vega (I am a helpless case I know), Vega&Cortez, and some general fishtank and showcase/collection thoughts please? (If you got any and want to.)

ROFL  Of course!!!  This may be a long post - I’ll try to put it under cut to make it easier to manage!

Okay, so:

Anderson & Vega

I think Anderson sees Vega as another protoge like Shepard, definitely

I think Anderson can relate all too well to what happens to James on Fehl Prime after some of the things that happened to him

Similar to what I mentioned in other headcanons about him, I believe Anderson served with James’ Uncle Emilio (I believe James said Emilio is a former marine?) and has had his eye out on James ever since he enlisted

I don’t know if it’s explicitly stated in the game, but I headcanon ANDERSON is the one who submitted James for ICT.  Who else would?  He’s N7 himself, and I headcanon it isn’t any different than he did for Shepard 

I firmly believe Anderson chooses Vega as Shepard’s babysitter for those six months because he knew EXACTLY where James’ headspace was after Fehl Prime and he wanted to save him from being discharged; basically, give him time to cool off, calm down, far less responsibility so he can start rebuilding himself

I think in some ways, Anderson even sees a bit of himself (in his younger years) in Vega

Vega and Cortez

(okay, I needed this prompt because I really need to get some ideas on them for upcoming fics!  Thank you for this!!! (and you are NOT a helpless case!!!))

I figure at some point during their stint on Fehl Prime together (Figuring out the timeline of colonies taken is troublesome at best, but I figure this one comes AFTER Ferris Fields and during the stage where Fehl Prime is in it’s rebuilding mode before the Collectors arrive) they end up drinking together - in a bar, on their own, doesn’t really matter - and Vega gets the story of what happened to Cortez’ husband

they both went through basic under the same drill sergeant but at different times, and stories from their experiences make it easier for them to bond

Cortez leaves Fehl Prime before the Collectors arrive - but he and Vega stay in touch

When Cortez hears about what happened at the colony after he left, he reaches out to James.  At some point (prior to Vega going on Shepard babysitting duty), they head out for drinks again, and this time it’s Cortez who does the listening

Vega mentions something to Anderson about Cortez (not sure just what yet) which perks Anderson’s interest and he manipulates files/transfers, etc. to get Cortez assigned to the team working on the Normandy

After Mars, Cortez tracks Vega down, they share a beer, and talk again (likely on the way to the Citadel) and I think this time it’s this that helps James calm down, rethink things and decide to stay on board the Normandy.  

at some point during ME3 (after the Coup, after the memorial wall), I think Cortez starts joining Vega down with the refugees to play a few hands at poker or whatever, also possibly helping out somehow

Cortez is the first person Vega goes to once he hears anything about his family back on Earth - which requires another round of drinks

in fact, after the first couple of times they drink together, I see it as a “next time’s your turn” kind of thing and they just keep trading off back and forth (as far as who is paying)

No matter what happens to Shepard/Normandy, when Vega is preparing to leave for N7 training post-game, Cortez offers to take him in the shuttle; he’s also the one to collect him after he finishes training

Shepard’s Cabin Headcanons

the fishtank is a ridiculous addition to the ship, but most of my Shepards eventually find it a nice one

I have one Shepard (Micah) who learned at a very young age never to name the fish anything ‘important’ so they’re all named things like,  Lunch, Snack, Dinner, Sushi, Breakfast, Elevenses, and Charlie  (a trick I learned from playing D&D years ago)

The fish have EYES and watch EVERYTHING that’s going on in that cabin

Jane Shepard (ShepShep) started building the models when Dr. Chakwas suggested it as a way to do physical therapy for her ‘fine motor skills’

after Omega (for Aria), Shepard and Traynor play chess with Petrovsky’s chess set that Shepard confiscates

A completely new idea I came up with in ShepShep:  There is a mini Galaxy Map on Shepard’s desk near the computer terminals where Shepard can make adjustments to their journey if necessary

Most of my Shepard’s take issue with the overhead window at first before coming around to liking it (usually the Spacer background Shepards get there first because they’re so much more attuned to ship life than Earthborn or Mindoir)

Garrus devises a way for Shepard to dim the lighting in the fishtank during events of ME2 after finding a potential crack in the glass from them throwing something at it during the night BECAUSE THEY WATCH EVERYTHING - if Tali is around at the time, she assists

at some point, someone with tech/engineering skills, ‘adjusts’ the lighting of tank to flash with the beat/rhythm of whatever music Shepard plays in the cabin, ala the old Windows Media player ... what are those things called?)
