Ils jouent Behind Blue Eyes des Who.

The Hydraulic Dogs - "Shake It for Me" Turbo Sampler (Vol. 2) 2000 House
Plays: N/A on Spotify // 80 on YouTube
Boy, do I have an absolute fuckin' underrated y2k-era banger for you all today. I really have no idea how the UK house music duo of Hydraulic Dogs ever first came about, but let's just say that it was definitely a good idea for these two guys to team up. Dominic Dawson aka DJD had been a veteran house DJ and producer since the 80s and Jonny Delafons aka L B Dope was a drummer for country-blues-acid house-trip hop band Alabama 3 (A3 in the States), whose biggest claim to fame would undoubtedly become "Woke Up This Morning," which would go on to serve as the theme song to The Sopranos.
But in the year 2000, with what seemed to be something of a side project for both of these blokes, Dawson and Delafons released their first single together, a funky piece of filtery and bonging house music called "Shake It for Me," which on top of a pretty standard four-on-the-floor house backbeat that added some hand drumming, incorporated samples from two extremely popular songs:
One, "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty," by KC & The Sunshine Band,
youtube
And two, "California Love," by 2Pac, Dr. Dre, & Roger Troutman from 80s electro-funk band Zapp.
youtube
Released on UK label Influence—a sublabel of UK label Defender—"Shake It for Me" would find its way onto a small handful of mixes in 2000, including two that were released by the biblical UK electronic music monthly, Mixmag, but another mix the song ended up on was DJ Laflèche's Montreal Mix, which was put out on the Montreal-based Turbo Recordings label; and because of the song's inclusion on that mix, a fuller-length version of it also appeared on a Turbo sampler that year too, even though Turbo never actually released the song themselves.
Anyway, "Shake It for Me" is pure gold, man. The samples it employs are obviously not obscure by any means, but the idea of marrying the opening moments of "Shake Your Booty" to some of Roger Troutman's own talk-box vocals from "California Love" really ends up generating a track that, to this day, still feels fit for unleashing in pretty much any party setting. And when Dawson and Delafons kill the Troutman loop(s) in order to instead let his voice wander freely and way offbeat, those are the times when this song reaches its most satisfying points 😌.
So if you adore "California Love," it's probably best that you give this house jam from the early 2000s a listen too, 'cuz you're probably gonna end up digging how this British pair implemented it for their own tune as well.
A 2002 single put out on UK Sony sublabel Direction would feature remixes of "Shake It for Me" by Italy's Junior Jack and the UK's TBC (Matt Schwartz), and it would end up charting successfully, reaching #56 on the UK Singles chart and #2 on the UK Dance Singles chart. The Hydraulic Dogs would also end up releasing a handful of more singles between '02 and '03—mostly promos—a digital single in '08, and they'd also do some remixes too, including a couple for Alabama 3, and another one in 2012 for Orbital's "New France," which featured Zola Jesus on it. And that Orbital remix appears to be the last time that we'd ever hear from them as a pair.
But their debut sure was a nice gem!

meet my fantasy nerds
So, they’re not new new, but I haven’t written with them in forever, and I never got to give a ton of backstory. I finally just got their chara pages up, the links are attached to their bolded names later in this post. you can look at them on a computer or by pasting the link into your mobile browser (b/c the tumblr app is a damn mess)
I’m really invested in them right now, and I would love it if y’all sent asks and prompts about them, esp if you have any ideas for them for Sickdays
here’s the one fic I’ve posted about them
here’s a drawing I did of 3/4 of the gang:
and here are some asks I’ve answered about them, as well as some I answered just about Yves
a bit of backstory on their world:
It’s a low-fantasy region with varying levels of technology depending on the country and the type of tech, but the most advanced shit they have is like ‘20s-level phones, cars and planes. Most land travel is still done by train or horse, and communications use phones, letters, and telegraph.
The three countries relevant to this story are the République de la mer du Sud, Estado de Ocaso, and Schwarzenscheid. It’s not set on earth, but they use earth languages because I wanted to and I can.
The République is where basically all plot stuff will happen, as the protagonists live there. They speak French and Spanish there, chiefly French, and they follow a monotheistic religion called the Communion of Fortune. The country is not friendly to other religions; following another beliefs system is basically forfeiting your rights. It’s a small island nation, so they eat lots of fish and have lots of boats. Their chief exports are medicine and other medical technology. They’re currently going through a revolution, and all the nobles have been killed/overthrown. My four main nerds are on the side of the rebels, and they’re about to enlist in the rebel army.
Estado de Ocaso is Serafino’s home. They speak Italian and Spanish, and they follow a polytheistic religion called Setta dei Nove (Corone). Their culture is a bit,,, shallow? Like they tend to favor aesthetic over practicality, and fashion is very big there. They’re also a bit less modern than the République.
Schwarzenscheid is Silvan’s home country. They speak English and German, and are also followers of the Communion of Fortune. On paper, it seems like an okay place, but they’re terrible at taking care of their common citizens, and unless you’re born rich, you have basically no chance of being truly successful.
characters
Silvan
The unofficial leader of the group. Very smart, sometimes too smart for his own good. He’s a devoted student, but loves to hang out with his friends and boyfriend in his free time. He and Yves aren’t exclusive (and definitely aren’t public or out either), and he flirts with girls a lot, especially after a few drinks. If he thinks he knows better than someone, he will aggressively assert his opinion, until they concede or a fight starts or his friends drag him away.
He’s a pretty nice guy, though, and just wants to make his own way in the world. As an orphan in Schwarzenscheid, he was never gonna be able to do anything with his life, so he worked his ass off throughout his early teens (while studying French and Spanish in his free time) and saved up enough money to move to the République. They had just finished a revolution when he showed up and started college, and he assumed things were going to settle down and get better so he could build a life for himself. Instead, boom! second revolution. Right now, he’s about done with his studies and ready to go off to war and prove himself.
Yves
Silvan’s boyfriend. The baby of the group despite being the second oldest. He’s very nice, but also very fiery if he gets riled up. He’s big on like helping and defending other people and advocating for equality, and has a bad habit of starting fights he can’t win. He met Silvan when the big nerd started coming into his family’s cafe to study regularly. His family are pretty chill people too, and they really like Silvan. They’ve basically pseudo-adopted him and try to feed broke skinny boi whenever they can.
Serafino
He came from Estado de Ocaso to study and explore. He’s very loyal to his home country, but has grown attached to the République as well, so he’s staying to help fight. He’s very catty and flamboyant, but charming when he wants to be. Pretty smart, too, hence why he was able to go abroad for school. He still wears traditional Ocasan clothing and follows their religion even though it gets him lots of nasty looks (especially from the loyalists, who are way less progressive than the rebels). Met Silvan when they had a class together, and they hit it off right away.
Désirée
The oldest of the group by far, but deffo not the Mom Friend by any means. More like the Bad Uncle Friend. She’s coarse and crass but fiercely loyal to her dumb boyos. She makes lots of dumb bets with Serafino, and she, Silvan, and Serafino wingman for each other constantly. She met the boys when they were out bar hopping and was basically like “let me show you how it’s done.” Female soldiers haven’t really been a thing in the past, but this revolution was so violent and unexpected, both sides are basically at the point of taking anyone who will fight, and she is most definitely down to fight.

All my scp ocs that work to monitor web based anomalies! More info under the cut about them! (Read right to left)
Agent Winchester: A transwoman who just graduated college majoring in programming. She tends to spend most of her time online or working on passion projects. She gets a mysterious job offering that also provides all the benefits she needs...
Agent Wyvern: a young transman from Poland who doesn't discuss most of his past. Was previously in an MTF unit that dealt with dangerous anomalies which he lost an arm and leg to. Was reassigned to this unit and isn't very happy about it. Is rather hot headed and moody. Would rather be doing field work.
Agent Avitus: was in his terms "isekaied" into the 2020s after falling in the Nile River back in 100 AD. Was discovered by the foundation after a heated arguement on Wikipedia occurred with Avitus getting an arguement with another user about the edits he made on articles regarding Ancient Rome and kept citing himself as source.
Agent Doe: Known as Johan Doe. A completely ordinary guy who showed up at the foundation one day with no recollection of who he was or where he came from. With no home he began office work around the foundation. Nothing about him stands out except coworkers around him tend to go missing and he has been reported as being "suspicious"
Agent fangirl4lyfe1998/Rana : She was first detained in Costa Rica by the foundation for creating strange fanfictions containing classified information. She began work for the foundation due to her skills with secruity hacking. Barely interacts with people off line and is generally disliked by her coworkers and people online.
Agent Laflèche: A former leader of an MTF unit that also preformed as a visual kei group. Is the only surviving member of that unit and has been transferred between various jobs within the foundation. They come across as mature and expierenced with anomalous work in all fields. She is in her 40s. Is also trying to start a new band.
Agent Shooting Hearts: Has horse features (horse ears, horse tail, and hooves), claims to be a magical unicorn. Ve has not shown any magic or horn. Enjoys vintage toy and doll collecting. Shooting Hearts is rather closed off about where ve comes from or how ve ended up here. Very sweet and kind.

Breakfast
It's Monday, so the polycule went out to a diner for breakfast. We've all got business on the South Shore, today, so we tried out Chez Manuel, a basic eatery in Laflèche, one of the older corners of Greenfield Park.
Over-easy eggs that were a little too small for comfort, a "small" glass of OJ I could've drowned in, enough potato squares I could've choked on and bacon strips that were in this weird, Eldritch state between soggy as fuck and expertly crispy. Walt couldn't stop commenting on the potatoes, Sarah and I thought the coffee might as well have been dishwater, and the toast points were pretty much floating in a congealed pool of melted butter. The tastebuds approved, the inner dietician shrieked and my Spirit Cardiologist probably took notes stating how much of an idiot I was being.
On the way back, a young-ish kid notices I'm a bit slow and doesn't really pay attention to the fact that Walter's helping me negotiate the curb.
"We don't see this too often, huh?" he notes, unbidden. "An older man helping his son around like that..."
Walt flashes a look in my direction, a bit of impishness suggesting he'd be up for maintaining the father-son routine to get this nosy young man out of our hair, and that as ever, he secretly likes being the paternal figure in the group. I smile back.
"That's Cerebral Palsy for you!" I shoot back. "You're all there, but your limbs aren't worth shit! I'm sure he likes your vote of confidence, but he isn't my father."
Someone older would've been flustered or confused. By the look of things, this is a kid who knows a few people in the wider LGBTQA diaspora. "Oh, sorry," he says, apologizing for his mislabeling and not out of embarrassment, "I just haven't met a lot of gays in Laflèche, is all."
Walter smiles tightly. "Well, don't advertise us openly; this isn't the kind of place that takes kindly to non-hetero types..."
The kid and his girl-friend seem surprised. They've been here often, but only to pick up student specials to-go, like the occasional deep-fried wiener or hamburger. I let them in on the weirdly racist remarks clients seated next to us parted with about workplace colleagues of their own.
The young girl scoffs knowingly. "Well, this is Laflèche, so... Either you're a long-time resident on a pension or a Social Welfare user - or you work one of the local factories or warehouses. We're only just starting to see nicer condos sprout up. Most of the people up this street call me The Nigger, as if they'd never seen another Black girl before."
Her tone changes from sarcasm to a tinge of worry. "You didn't... hold hands while inside, did you?"
Walt and I exchange another glance, as worried realization settles in. There's a dingy-looking sports bar across the street, the exact kind that's probably under protection by some flavor of criminal asshats, and the entire area has this particular feel where you have the sense that someone, somewhere, is liberally siphoning cash out of registers in exchange for "services rendered". We replay the morning's events in our three minds, like modded Precogs scanning the recent past.
Nope, no outward contacts. We effectively were three coworkers sitting at the same table, this morning. Phew.
"I... don't think we'll be coming back here," notes Sarah.
"Nope!" responds Walter as he ducks inside the car like someone who's expecting bullets to start flying. "It's a shame, though," he notes, "I really liked these potatoes!"

Gisele Mackenzie: Her Hit Parade
Gisele Mackenzie: Her Hit Parade
I learned the name of Gisele MacKenzie (1927-2003) around the same time I learned that of Ghislaine Maxwell, and now I live in fear that I’ll always mix them up, for aren’t they similar? But it’s not fair. The latter was Jeffrey Epstein’s accomplice, and the former was a lovely French-Canadian singer whose real name was Gisèle Marie Louise Marguerite LaFlèche. I half suspect that she may have…

Joe T. Vannelli - “Don’t Bring Me Down (Groove Mix)” Montreal Mix Sessions Vol. 4 by Laflèche Song released in 1999. Mix released in 2000. House
Joe T. Vannelli appears to have done it all when it comes to house music. From producer, to radio host, to globetrotting DJ, to record label owner, to podcaster, to remixer, Vannelli has been working with and around music since the 70s and really has shown no signs of stopping. As Italy’s greatest dance music export, he’s known to have produced remixes for a long list of famous acts including Erasure, Black Box, Thelma Houston, Boy George, Bobby Brown, New Order, Right Said Fred, Mark Morrison, Giorgio Moroder, Eartha Kitt, Ginuwine, and Madonna. Vannelli just might be the longest lasting and hardest working entity in the history of house music.
In 1999, Vannelli released a song called “Don’t Bring Me Down,” which was remixed to the hilt by him and a handful of other house artists. One of those remixes, Vannelli’s “Groove Mix,” is featured on a double 12-inch he released through one of his many labels, Dream Beat. In 2000, it appeared on Montreal DJ Laflèche’s Montreal Mix Sessions Vol. 4.
The “Groove Mix” of “Don’t Bring Me Down” is a great, simple yet contagious, tribal number that lives up to its name by not really building or peaking, and instead, just rides. Vannelli provides a hand drum rhythm and surrounds it with hi-hats, hand claps, and a kick drum. As the track proceeds, he lays a cowbell over top and then a little subtle acid beep between those cowbell strikes.
A solid tribal offering from Vannelli here.
