I need your help with a hypothesis!

For context: My linguistics professor and I got into a discussion after a test she did with us, and I was of the opinion that the reason for the results was different from the one she offered, so she encouraged me to test my theory.

What I need

All you need to do is draw a coffee cup (with a handle, not the disposable stuff) and then answer three questions.

I don't need to see the coffee cup. You can draw it wherever you like; on a piece of paper, digitally, in the sand, on a foggy window. Anything works. It does not have to be good. A doodle is fine.

You have to draw the coffee cup before you see the questions. This is very important. If you decide to help me with this, please doodle the coffee cup before you keep reading.

Assuming you have drawn the coffee cup, I now need you to answer these three questions:

On which side did you draw the handle?

Are you right-handed or left-handed?

Do you primarily write using the Latin alphabet or a different one? (please specify which)

More context

Most people will draw the handle on the right side. My professor says it's because most people are right-handed, so they draw the handle in the direction that would be comfortable for them to pick up.

I said drawing it on the right side just felt more comfortable to my hand and argued it's probably because we write a bunch of letters like that. B, b, D, P, p, R all look like a tiny "handle on the right side" and are all a straight line followed by a round one (so "cup first, handle second," like most people draw cups). The Latin alphabet doesn't have letters like that that face the other way, except maybe d, depending on how you write it, so it makes sense to me that people writing mostly Latin letters would go with the handle on the right side.

Which means that I need to know what Asians, Arabs and Greeks do and if the distribution of left and right sides of handles differs from the Latin alphabet group. Cyrillic seems to favor right, too, though it'd be interesting to see if there are differences.

If there are, my theory is right. Doubly so if there is a sizeable increase in a group whose alphabet has letters that benefit the left side choice.

So feel free to spread this to as many people as you like and put the answers in the comments or the tags of a reblog. The more answers I get, the better I can assess whose theory is better.

In light of Duolingo laying off its translators, here are my favourite language apps (primarily for Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, and te reo Māori).

Multiple Languages

Anki is a flashcard programme and app that's not exclusively for languages. While making your own decks is ideal, you can also download shared decks for most languages.

If you're learning Japanese, specifically, Seth Clydesdale has websites for practicing alongside Genki's 2nd or 3rd editions, and he also provides his own shared Anki decks for Genki.

And if you're learning te reo Māori, specifically, here's a guide on how to make your own deck.

TOFU Learn is an app for learning vocabulary that's very similar to Anki. However, it has particularly excellent shared decks for East Asian languages. I've used it extensively for practicing 汉字. Additionally, if you're learning te reo Māori, there's a shared deck of vocabulary from Māori Made Easy!

Mandarin Chinese

Hello Chinese is a fantastic app for people at the HSK 1-4 levels. While there's a paid version, the only thing paying unlocks is access to podcast lessons, which imo are not really necessary. Without paying you still have access to all the gamified lessons which are laid out much like Duolingo's lessons. However, unlike Duolingo, Hello Chinese actually teaches grammar directly, properly teaches 汉字, and includes native audio practice.

Japanese

Renshuu is a website and app for learning and practicing Japanese. The vast majority of its content is available for free. There's also a Discord community where you can practice alongside others.

Kanji Dojo is a free and open source app for learning and practicing the stroke order of kanji. You can learn progressively by JLPT level or by Japanese grades. There's also the option to learn and practice kana stroke order as well.

Just encountered the idiom "小巫见大巫". Figuratively, it means "to pale in comparison". But literally it just means "small wizard sees big wizard".

And like... No. You cannot just use the words small and big when you're coming up with a metaphor about one thing outshining another in some respect.

Really appreciating the cultural context posts you are sharing! It is really helping to recontextualize important details!!

So just a follow up to the name post, when we write fanfic, how would you say is the most culturally correct/appropriate way we can write the character's name during narration ('Xiaoshuai stood up.' or something ?) versus how they would call each other ?

Firstly: don't worry, this isn't a matter of being culturally correct or appropriate--it just sounds and lands weird to the Chinese ear. Using it wrong isn't offending anybody or rousing the anger of our ancestors or whatever, it's just a dead giveaway that you don't speak Chinese, which isn't a super huge shock when it comes to international fandom anyway, so truly, nobody needs to get pressed about this in any meaningful way unless you're going to write fan fiction that I want to read, in which case please God get this right so I don't have to back button out of that bitch.

In terms of how you'd use names in regular context, it's never incorrect when referring to someone to use their full name. Chinese family names don't serve the same purpose as Western surnames--they're an intrinsic part of a person's name, not separate from their given name. My parents still call me by my full name, including family name, very frequently, and not even because I'm in trouble.

If you worry that's not giving enough variation in your narrative, you can always default to the given name--if it has two syllables in it. If a character's full name is, to bring some necromancing twink action into it, Wei Ying, I cannot express to you how unhinged it sounds for that character to be referred to, whether by another character or by themselves or by the narrator as just "Ying." However, you can absolutely refer to them as Wuxian, as in Wei Wuxian.

Okay now I'm going to get into advanced weirdness 204: what would you refer to a character by if you're the narrator or POV character, referring to a different character?

If I'm thinking about myself, I am only ever going to think about myself in my full name, full stop. I have literally never thought about myself as anything other than Family Name Given Name in the private offices of my brain, unless I am calling myself a dumbass or something of a similar nature.

If I am thinking about someone else, all the things you might reasonably call that person out loud are things you could call them in the narrative. For example, if I am being a pervert about Guo Chengyu (facts), I could refer to him in a depraved screed about the stuff I want to do to and at him as "Guo Chengyu," as "Chengyu," as "Guo-zong" (Director Guo, presuming his work title), "Guo-shao" (young master Guo), "Chengyu-ge," Bro Chengyu (nonfucky), "Chengyu-gege" (unbelievably fucky), "Chengcheng" (if I want to get punched), "Yuyu" (also if I want to get punched), "Cheng'er" (if I'm some kind of female relative who is significantly more senior to him, but mostly limited to moms and maternal aunts), "xiao-Cheng" or "xiao-Yu" (if I'm an older male with reasonable closeness; this would not be appropriate in a work setting unless the person is significantly, significantly more senior than him and probably only acceptable if they're a friend of the family).

But you can also play with this. So if I have a secret crush on Guo Chengyu, and I'm in his long-suffering rotation of secretaries, I might generally refer to him--out loud and in my head--as Guo-zong (Director Guo), but in my heart, late at night when it's safe and I allow myself to hope, I might whisper "Chengyu-gege" to myself like a complete harlot.
